Effect of pyrolytic carbon coating on the microstructure and fracture behavior of the Cf/ZrB2-SiC composite

Dongyang Zhang,Ping Hu,Shun Dong,Qiang Qu,Xinghong Zhang

The high sintering temperature and interface interaction seriously degraded the toughening effects of continuous carbon fiber in ZrB 2 -SiC ceramic. The pyrolytic carbon coated carbon fiber reinforced ZrB 2 -SiC composite (C f-PyC /ZrB 2 -SiC) with desirable properties was successfully achieved via brushing nano ZrB 2 -SiC slurry followed by spark plasma sintering at relatively low sintering temperature. The fabricated C f-PyC /ZrB 2 -SiC composite presented a non-brittle fracture feature and a remarkable enhancement in comparison with the ZrB 2 -SiC composite reinforced by the as-received carbon fiber (C f-AS /ZrB 2 -SiC). The fracture toughness and critical crack size were increased from 5.97 ± 0.18–7.66 ± 0.24 MPa m 1/2 and from 91.6 to 164.5 µm, respectively. A high work of fracture of 1915 J/m 2 for C f-PyC /ZrB 2 -SiC composite was achieved, almost four times higher than that of the C f-AS /ZrB 2 -SiC composite (463 J/m 2 ). Multiple toughening mechanisms contributed to such enhancement, such as crack deflection, fiber bridging, fiber pull-out and crack branching. This work provides a feasible approach to fabricate high-performance fiber reinforced ceramic composites having a high work of fracture.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of three dimensional Cf/SiC-ZrC-ZrB2 composites prepared by reactive melt infiltration method

Xiaowu Chen,Shaoming Dong,Yanmei Kan,Xihai Jin,Haijun Zhou,Dewei Ni,Dengke Wang

Three-dimensional C f /SiC-ZrC-ZrB 2 composites were fabricated by reactive melt infiltration of ZrSi 2 alloys into porous C f /B 4 C-C preforms prepared through a sol-gel process. The influence of pore structure of the C f /B 4 C-C preforms on microstructure and mechanical performances of the C f /SiC-ZrC-ZrB 2 composites was studied. It was found that the microstructure and mechanical performances of the composites showed a strong dependence on the pore structure of the preforms. Residual ZrSi 2 content in the composites was significantly reduced with the decreases in the porosity and pore size of the C f /B 4 C-C preforms. At the same time, fiber erosion in the composites was also gradually mitigated, which led to a significant improvement in the fracture behaviors of the composite, as failure mode of the composites changed from brittle to pseudo-plastic. When the porosity of the preforms decreased from 53.7% to 31.3%, the flexural strength of the composites increased from 53   MPa to 184   MPa.

Continuous carbon fiber reinforced ZrB2-SiC composites fabricated by direct ink writing combined with low-temperature hot-pressing

Yaxiong Liu,Yehong Cheng,Denghao Ma,Ning Hu,Wenbo Han,Dazhao Liu,Shuai Wu,Yumin An,Anzhe Wang

As one of additive manufacturing techniques, direct ink writing has significant advantages in the manufacture of ceramic matrix composites , nevertheless, the poor impregnability of ceramic slurry makes it difficult to fill the interior of fiber bundles, causing poor mechanical properties . Here, ultrasound-assisted fiber separation technique was introduced to impregnate ceramic slurry with a continuous carbon fiber bundle during direct ink writing of continuous carbon fiber/ceramic green body and subsequent low temperature hot-pressing was combined to improve its robustness. Suitable thickness of carbon coating could bring to high fracture resistance, whereas excessively thick carbon coating will adversely affect the mechanical properties. A carbon interface with thickness around 110 nm was incorporated, the flexural strength , fracture toughness and work of fracture of C f /ZrB 2 -SiC composite reached 388.3 MPa, 10.04 MPa·m 1/2 and 2380 J/m 2 , respectively. Therefore, direct ink writing combined with low temperature hot-pressing, was effective to fabricate high-performance ceramic matrix composites.

Preparation and application of ZrB2-SiCw composite powder for corrosion resistance improvement in Al2O3–ZrO2–C slide plate materials

Jinjin Ban,Chaojie Zhou,Long Feng,Quanli Jia,Xinhong Liu,Junhua Hu

ZrB 2 -SiCw (w-whisker) composite powders were synthesized by a microwave-assisted carbo/borothermal reduction method under argon atmosphere using zircon , boric acid, and activated carbon as starting materials. The optimized ZrB 2 -SiCw composite powder was obtained by adjusting heating temperature and amounts of boric acid and activated carbon. Further, the effect of the optimized ZrB 2 -SiCw composite powder addition on corrosion resistance of the Al 2 O 3 –ZrO 2 –C slide plate material against O 2 and Ca-treated steel was investigated. The results showed that the relative content of ZrB 2 -SiCw increased with increasing temperature. The excess of boric acid favored the formation of the ZrB 2 -SiCw, and the optimum amount of boric acid was overdosed to 30–45 wt%. The corrosion resistance and thermo-mechanical properties of Al 2 O 3 –ZrO 2 –C slide plate material could be improved effectively with 6 wt% ZrB 2 -SiCw composite powder addition, which was attributed to the excellent oxidation and corrosion resistance of ZrB 2 -SiCw composite powder. In addition, ZrB 2 -SiCw could confer excellent thermal shock resistance and reduce the generation of cracks, ultimately preventing corrosive media from infiltrating into slide plates, further increasing corrosion resistance of the plates.

Effect of Si, Al2O3 additives on the ablation behavior of ZrB2-SiC coating with Al2O3-modified SiC bond coat for C/C composites

Gui Li,Jianjie Hao,Jiayan Li,Pengyu Dai,Bo Wang,Yuanqi Li,Yi Tan,Xueqiang Cao

This work firstly evaluated the effect of temperature on the preparation of SiC coating using Al 2 O 3 as catalyst by pack cementation (PC) method. SiC/ZrB 2 -SiC-Si (ZSS) and SiC/ZrB 2 -SiC-Al 2 O 3 (ZSA) coating were prepared on the surface of C/C composites by PC combined with atmospheric plasma spraying (APS). The objective of this work is to study the influence of Si and Al 2 O 3 additives for ablation performances of ZrB 2 -SiC coating. The coated samples were subjected to ablation test, and the phase composition and microstructure evolution were investigated. The results indicated that SiC/ZSA coating had better ablation resistance because phase transformation and growth of ZrO 2 grain was restrained by Al 2 O 3 .

Mechanical properties, thermophysical properties, and long-term ablation behaviours of C/C–ZrC– ZrB2– W–Cu composites

Junjie Xu,Wei Sun,Xiang Xiong,Hongbo Zhang,Lingkun Yang

Spacecraft thermal protection materials need to survive long-term exposure to oxygen-containing environments at 2400 °C. In this study, a high-density and low-porosity metal-ceramic-modified composite was prepared at a low temperature (1500 °C) in the presence of W and Cu using combined slurry brushing and reactive melt infiltration methods. An investigation of the composite formation mechanism and the effects of W and Cu indicated that W and ZrB 2 were formed via dissolution-precipitation and the external diffusion of C and B, respectively. The low reaction temperature and the metallic phases significantly improved the mechanical properties, thermophysical properties, and long-term ablation behaviours of C/C–ZrC–ZrB 2 –W–Cu. Compared to traditional C/C–ZrC, the flexural strength and fracture toughness of the composite increased by 71.56 % and 90.05 % to 345.95 MPa and 14.52 MPa m 1/2 , respectively, and the thermal conductivity increased by 174.93 % to 59.11 W/m·K. In addition, W and Cu effectively lowered the surface temperature by nearly 250 °C during 300 s ablation, and the mass and line ablation rates decreased to −0.272 mg/s and −0.247 μm/s, respectively.

Ultrafine ZrB2 Ceramic Powders Prepared by a Sol–Gel Method Synergized with a Carbothermic Reaction and Their Improved Sintering Performance

Mengen Hu,Zhulin Huang,Xinyang Li,Yuan Cheng,Zhen Wang,Kewei Li,Tianxu Wang,Xiaoye Hu,Yue Li,Xinghong Zhang

The sol–gel method synergized with a carbothermic reaction has been known to be one of the most promising strategies for preparing a high-quality boride and carbon-based ultrahigh-temperature ceramic, yet their growth mechanism remains underexplored. Herein, high-purity ZrB2 ceramic powders are prepared by a sol–gel method synergized with a subsequent carbothermic reaction. Specifically, sorbitol (C6H14O6) is adopted to build molecularly disperse networks of Zr–O–C–B. Structural characterizations reveal that the calcination temperature and duration have a great influence on the phase and morphological transformation of the precursor. The ZrB2 seeds start to be generated near ZrO2 particles around 1100 °C and grow from the surface to the core of ZrO2 particles with heat and mass transportation around ZrO2 driven by B2O3 at high temperature. Additionally, the ZrB2 powders could research a hardness of 22.5 GPa and a bending strength of 540 MPa after sintering, showing improved mechanical properties. This work reveals the growth mechanism of ultrafine and high-purity ZrB2 powders by a sol–gel method and a carbothermic reaction, which can be used as raw materials to obtain ZrB2 ultrahigh-temperature ceramics with improved mechanical properties.

Fabrication and microstructure evolution of Csf/ZrB2-SiC composites via direct ink writing and reactive melt infiltration

Lu Jun,Ni Dewei,Liao Chunjing,Zhou Haijun,Jiang Youlin,Chen Bowen,Zou Xuegang,Cai Feiyan,Ding Yusheng,Dong Shaoming

Fiber damage and uniform interphase preparation are the main challenges in conventional short fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites. In this work, we develop a novel processing route in fabrication of short carbon fiber reinforced ZrB 2 -SiC composites (C sf /ZrB 2 -SiC) overcoming the above two issues. At first, C sf preforms with oriented designation and uniform PyC/SiC interphase are fabricated via direct ink writing (DIW) of short carbon fiber paste followed by chemical vapor infiltration. After that, ZrB 2 and SiC are introduced into the preforms by slurry impregnation and reactive melt infiltration, respectively. Microstructure evolution and optimization of the composites during fabrication are investigated in detail. The as-fabricated C sf /ZrB 2 -SiC composites have a bulk density of 2.47 g/cm 3 , with uniform weak interphase and without serious fiber damage. Consequently, non-brittle fracture occurs in the C sf /ZrB 2 -SiC composites with widespread toughening mechanisms such as crack deflection and bridging, interphase debonding, and fiber pull-out. This work provides a new opportunity to the material design and selection of short fiber reinforced composites.

Microstructures and mechanical properties of Cf/ZrB2-SiC composite fabricated by nano slurry brushing combined with low-temperature hot pressing

Dongyang Zhang,Ping Hu,Shun Dong,Cheng Fang,Jiaxin Feng,Xinghong Zhang

The C f /ZrB 2 -SiC composite was successfully fabricated via brushing nano ZrB 2 -SiC slurry followed by low-temperature hot pressing technique, in which the UHTC phases were uniformly introduced into intrafascicular space of the subdivided fiber bundles. The fabricated composite exhibited a non-brittle fracture behavior and excellent mechanical properties with a high work of fracture of 1338 J/m 2 , one order of magnitude higher than that of the ZrB 2 -SiC ceramic, which was attributed to the hybrid toughening mechanisms such as crack deflection, fiber bridging, fiber pull-out and crack branching. The fiber/matrix interfaces were analyzed by the high resolution transmission electron microscopy , and no obvious chemical reaction was detected, suggesting the degradation of carbon fiber was effectively inhibited. Moreover, the C f /ZrB 2 -SiC composite showed a good thermal shock resistance with a thermal shock temperature difference of 764 °C, almost twice those of the ZrB 2 -SiC ceramic. This work provides a facile and effective approach to fabricate high-performance continuous carbon fiber reinforced ceramic composites with uniform component distribution.

The mechanical properties and ablation resistance of the Cf/ZrB2-SiC-C composites fabricated using a cost-effective strategy

Tianyang Xia,Qiang Gao,FuShuai Wang,Liancai Xun,Zibin Chen,Ping Hu

Carbon fiber reinforced ultra-high temperature ceramic matrix composites (C f /UHTCMCs) are considered ideal materials for thermal protection components in hypersonic vehicles due to their outstanding overall performance. However, the existing fabrication techniques for C f /UHTCMCs face significant engineering challenges, including high raw material costs and complex processing methods. Here we propose a cost-effective fabrication strategy. This approach ensures the oxidation and ablation resistance of the material by incorporating sufficient ZrB 2 and SiC, followed by filling the remaining pores in the composite with in-situ derived pyrolytic carbon from furfuryl ketone resin, which significantly reduces fabrication costs and enables rapid densification. The C f /ZrB 2 -SiC-C composites produced by this strategy exhibit a flexural strength of 468 ± 18 MPa and a fracture toughness of 18.23 ± 1.14 MPa m 1/2 . Furthermore, the composites remain non-ablative when exposed to temperatures of 2300 °C for extended periods, with a mass ablation rate of only 4.14 × 10 −6  g/(mm 2 ·s) after 400 s of testing. This strategy offers significant design versatility and can be applied to various ultra-high temperature ceramic systems, offering a novel and cost-effective approach to the development of thermal protection materials for hypersonic vehicles.

Investigation on thermal stability and tribological properties of ZrB2 particles filling cyanate ester resin composites by experiments and numerical simulation

Jiacheng Wu,Zhuoying Jia,Yannan He,Zhiqiang Yu

The thermal stability and tribological properties of cyanate ester (CE) composites filled with Zirconium boride (ZrB 2 ) particles were investigated by experimental and numerical simulation. The results of thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry showed that the thermal stability of composites was improved by introduction of ZrB 2 particles. The tribological properties of composites including friction coefficient and wear rate measured by pin-on-disk friction and wear tester were enhanced. Friction coefficient and wear rate of composites were decreased significantly with an increase of ZrB 2 particles content under dry and oil sliding conditions. The 5 wt% ZrB 2 particles reinforced CE resin composite presented optimal thermal stability and tribological performance due to good dispersion of ZrB 2 particles. The worn surfaces of composites were observed by scanning electron microscopy to explore wear mechanism, indicating that the dominant wear mechanism of composites was transformed from adhesive wear to abrasive wear after incorporation of ZrB 2 particles. Finite element model was established to study the distribution of friction stress. The results revealed that filling ZrB 2 particles in the friction process of composites could bear more friction stress than CE resin matrix, which further illustrated that abrasive wear is main wear mechanism of ZrB 2 /CE resin composites. Fabricating ultrathin ZrB2/Graphene oxide/carboxymethocel layer onto cathode as effective polysulfide shuttling barrier for Li–S battery

Yang Wang,Jingyun Huang,Jianguo Lu,Bin Lu,Zhizhen Ye

The shuttling effect of soluble polysulfide in electrolyte has been the major obstacle resulting in the poor cycling stability of Li–S battery. The ultrathin ZrB 2 /graphene oxide/carboxymethocel (ZrB 2 /GO/CMC) layer coated onto cathode via simple doctor blade method has been developed as the effective polysulfide shuttling barrier. Owing to typical 2D scaffold and abundant functional oxygen groups, the GO can provide physical defender as well as chemical trap against polysulfide shuttling. The introduction of conductive ZrB 2 nanoparticles in the hybrid layer can not only improve the conductivity of hybrid layer dramatically reducing electrochemical polarization of Li–S battery without adding other conductive agent but also further form chemical shield by chemisorption which is firstly confirmed by experimental and theoretical calculations. Combining these merits, the ultrathin ZrB 2 /GO/CMC hybrid layer combining with CNT@S hybrid cathode enables the Li–S battery to achieve good rate performance (769 mAh g −1  at a rate of 2 C) and stable cycling capability (with a low capacity decay rate of 0.098% during 300 cycles at 1 C). Specifically, the Li–S battery shows the potential of practical application, with high areal S loading of 5.1 mg cm −2 , delivering the capacity near-commercial lithium-ion battery.
