Bioinspired honeycomb structure enables high thermal conductivity in h-BN/PSAE composites via TBA-templating

Yujie Yang,Huixing Lin,Jiaqi Li,Yang Gao,Xiaogang Yao,Haiyi Peng

Efficient thermal management is a critical challenge for next-generation electronics, where conventional polymer-based materials suffer from inherently low thermal conductivity. Inspired by natural honeycomb structures, we developed a freeze-casting strategy to fabricate high-performance hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN)/polysilylaryl-enyne (PSAE) composites exhibiting enhanced thermal conductivity. By leveraging the unidirectional crystallization of tert-butyl alcohol (TBA), a highly ordered h-BN honeycomb scaffold was constructed, facilitating the formation of efficient phonon conduction pathways. The composites, with a low h-BN (10 μm) ratio of 23 vol%, exhibit an outstanding omni-directional thermal conductivity of 4.71 W/(m·K) along the z-axis and 3.44 W/(m·K) along the x-axis, significantly outperforming conventional polymer composites. Moreover, dielectric characterization confirms that the honeycomb structure enhances anisotropic dielectric behavior ( ε rz  = 3.68, ε rx  = 3.32, for h-BN (10 μm) at 23 vol%). The proposed bioinspired approach presents a scalable and effective route for developing lightweight, thermally conductive composites for advanced electronic applications.

Electrospun porous Al18B4O33/h-BN composite fibers with tailored microstructures for high-temperature thermal insulation

Peng Chu,Lindong Ma,Hongli Liu,Zongwei Zhang,Yuhao Liu,Weiqiang Xie,Wenshuo Cao,Mingwei Li,Yuanhang Zhou

Aluminum borate fibers are promising candidates for high-temperature thermal insulation owing to their excellent thermal stability, good chemical resistance, and relatively low density. Herein, we report a simple method for preparing porous Al 18 B 4 O 33 /h-BN composite fibers via electrospinning and stepwise heat treatment, using an aluminum isopropoxide/aluminum nitrate (AIP-AN) complex as the aluminum source and nanoscale h-BN as the boron source. The incorporation of h-BN not only promotes the in-situ formation of the Al 18 B 4 O 33 phase but also affects the fiber's pore structure. Meanwhile, the heterogeneous interface formed between h-BN and the Al 18 B 4 O 33 may introduce additional interfacial thermal resistance, thereby synergistically reducing thermal conductivity and improving thermal insulation performance. The resulting composite fibers exhibited a highly porous structure, with a high specific surface area of 53.9175 m 2  g −1 , a low density of 0.025 g cm −3 , and a low thermal conductivity of 0.0417 W m −1  K −1 . The porous Al 18 B 4 O 33 /h-BN composite fibers demonstrate significant potential for thermal insulation in extreme environments, offering a viable approach to developing high-performance ceramic fiber insulation materials.

Enhancing wide-temperature tribological properties and oxidation resistance of Ti-MAO coatings with h-BN

Jia Wang,Zeru Wang,Chuanyao Dong,Kan Zhang

Titanium alloys are widely used in lightweight mechanical components, but their limited mechanical and tribological properties often lead to failure under service conditions. In this study, a titanium-based micro-arc oxidation (Ti-MAO) composite coating was developed by incorporating hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) while optimizing electrolyte composition and process parameters. Proper control of h-BN content effectively improved the high-temperature oxidation resistance and tribological properties of the Ti-MAO coating. The research results showed that h-BN could regulate the energy distribution during MAO discharge, promote coating densification, and reduce structural defects. At a concentration of 4 g/L, h-BN maintained good dispersibility. Compared with an additive-free Ti-MAO coating, the h-BN/Ti-MAO composite coating showed an 86% reduction in the oxidation rate constant at 600 °C. Due to the stable layered structure of h-BN over a wide temperature range, the composite coating maintained a friction coefficient (COF) below 0.31 from room temperature (RT) to 500 °C, reduced to below 0.21 within 300 °C. However, excessive h-BN led to particle aggregation and a decline in overall coating performance. In summary, this approach enhances the durability of titanium alloy components through improved oxidation resistance and tribological properties.

Hierarchically structured electrospun MWCNTs/h-BN bilayer membranes with passive radiative cooling and microwave absorption

Han Wu,Yingying Zhou,Liuchao Zhang,Jinlei Wu,Chenxi Wang,Xiaoyan Li,Rong Ma,Chaoqun Yang,Donghai Ding,Yuchang Qing,Hui Xie

Sequential electrospinning creates spatially separated MWCNT/h-BN bilayers. • M-B-30 delivers an RL min of −34.26 dB and an EAB max of 4.48 GHz. • M-B-30 reaches 91.52% solar reflectance and emissivity up to 0.979. • Outdoor cooling lowers M-B-30 to 16.45 °C below ambient temperature. • Bilayer design balances impedance matching, dielectric loss, and radiative cooling. Integrating passive radiative cooling with microwave absorption in a single membrane remains challenging because conductive carbon-based absorbers generally exhibit strong solar heating, whereas highly reflective components alter the dielectric response and disrupt the impedance-matching balance required for efficient microwave attenuation. Here, bilayer MWCNTs/h-BN nanofibrous composite membranes were fabricated by sequential electrospinning. The h-BN-containing polyacrylonitrile (PAN) upper layer was designed to enhance solar reflection and mid-infrared emission while moderating the impedance transition from free space to the lossy MWCNTs/PAN lower layer. By adjusting the h-BN content, the optical and electromagnetic responses of the bilayer membranes were effectively coordinated. The optimized M-B-30 membrane achieved a minimum reflection loss of −34.26 dB at 1.5 mm and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth of 4.48 GHz at 1.9 mm. It also exhibited a solar reflectance of 91.52% and an emissivity of up to 0.979 within the 8–13 μm atmospheric window, resulting in a maximum sub-ambient temperature reduction of 16.45 °C during outdoor testing. The microwave absorption was attributed to the balance among layered impedance matching, conductive dissipation, polarization relaxation, and multiple scattering, whereas the radiative-cooling performance resulted from enhanced solar scattering and efficient mid-infrared thermal emission. This spatially separated bilayer design provides an effective route for integrating microwave attenuation and passive thermal regulation in multifunctional composite membranes. Enhancing the machinability of Si3N4 ceramics through h-BN and ytterbium silicate composite weak interfaces

Song Wu,Yongfeng Xia,Ming Zhu,Jun Zhao,Dongxu Yao,Yu-Ping Zeng

Machinable Si 3 N 4 ceramics containing 10 vol% h-BN and crystalline ytterbium silicate secondary phases were prepared. • Heat treatment promoted the crystallization of ytterbium-containing secondary phases into ytterbium silicates. • Crystallization was accompanied by the development of compressive residual stress. • 10 vol% h-BN with crystalline ytterbium silicate phases achieved drilling performance comparable to conventional 20 vol% h-BN. Traditionally, the machinability of Si 3 N 4 ceramics has mainly been improved by introducing individual weak-interface phases, while the role of grain-boundary phases was often neglected. In this study, Si 3 N 4 ceramics were fabricated by hot-press sintering with heat treatment using Yb 2 O 3 and SiO 2 as sintering additives. The crystalline ytterbium silicate secondary phases formed in situ during heat treatment, together with the addition of a small amount of h-BN, introduced weak-interface-forming regions into the Si 3 N 4 microstructure and contributed to improved machinability. The effects of sintering additive ratio, h-BN content, and heat-treatment temperature on mechanical and machinable properties were systematically investigated. The results demonstrated that Si 3 N 4 ceramics containing only 10 vol% h-BN could be readily machined using conventional cemented carbide drills while maintaining high strength, with a bending strength of 660 MPa, fracture toughness of 6.9 MPa·m 1/2 , Young’s modulus of 263 GPa, and Vicker’s hardness of 9.3 GPa (under 10 N).

Properties of Vinyl-Grafted h-BN/PDMS Coatings and Their Protective Effects on Mortar Surfaces

Zhijun Liu,Junxiang Lu,Meng Xu,Shaochun Li,Anjie Zhou,Yongjuan Geng,Sai Zhang

This study presents the development of h-BN/PDMS composite coatings through hydroxylation treatment and modification of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) using a vinyl silane coupling agent. The study aims to address the limitations of conventional PDMS coatings, specifically their inadequate mechanical strength and poor resistance to weathering. The innovation lies in the improved dispersion of h-BN within the PDMS matrix, which was achieved via the surface grafting of vinyl groups. This approach, combined with the intrinsic layered structure and high thermal conductivity of h-BN, led to a synergistic enhancement in the mechanical performance and protective functionality of the coating. Experimental results demonstrated that incorporating 8% modified h-BN increased the tensile strength of the coating to 5.206 MPa, an improvement of 110.6% over pure PDMS, and reduced erosion depth to 2.7 μm. Furthermore, the coating exhibited minimal adhesive strength loss after UV aging (from 1.085 to 1.012 MPa). Under acidic conditions (pH = 2), the composite coating reduced the mortar strength loss by 53.1%. In seawater immersion and 25 freeze-thaw cycles, the mass loss rates of the test blocks decreased by 55.9% and 90.4%, respectively. In addition, the high UV reflectance (97.6%) and oxygen barrier properties of h-BN significantly mitigated the photo-oxidative degradation of the PDMS matrix. This study proposes a theoretical foundation and process optimization strategy for designing high-performance protective coatings suitable for use on concrete and electronic components in extreme environments.

Fabrication of MoS2/h-BN Heterojunctions to Tune Interfacial Electronic Properties for Enhanced Oxidative Desulfurization

Yanan Huang,Wenjing Xie,Jia Li,Jixing Liu,Hao Chen

Oxidative desulfurization (ODS) is one of the most promising processes for producing clean fuels to meet the requirements for the clean use of fossil fuels. In this study, a MoS2/h-BN heterojunction was synthesized using the chemical vapor deposition method, leading to a modified electronic structure at the surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy suggested the occurrence of interfacial electronic reorganization and enhanced charge transfer efficiency due to the formation of a well-defined heterojunction. Hydrogenation temperature-programmed reduction revealed a strong interaction between h-BN and MoS2, which contributed to the highly efficient performance of the heterojunction for ODS applications. As a result, although h-BN showed very low ODS activity, its catalytic activity was enhanced so much and even comparable to that of pure MoS2 after loading with only 1.7 wt % MoS2 on h-BN to construct MoS2/h-BN heterojunctions.

Surface modification of h-BN and electric field control of its orientation in sulfonated polyetheretherketone

Jin Yang,Yixuan Hou,Yingzheng Hong,Yingbang Yao

Since thermally conductive fillers easily aggregate when introduced into polymer matrix, it is essential to apply a modifier to enhance the dispersion of the filler. In current study, the surface of boron nitride (h-BN) is firstly modified by employing a double modification process and then added into sulfonated polyetheretherketone (SPEEK) to form the composite materials. Four different kinds of samples of double-modified h-BN were obtained. Ultimately, the XXX@h-BN/SPEEK (XXX denoted as modifier, i.e. PDA, VTMS, TEOS, and APS) flexible film with the horizontally oriented XXX@h-BN was produced by heating the mixture under an external electric field. The test results indicate that the thermally conductive filler PDA@h-BN (PDA: polydopamine), which was prepared by modifying OH@h-BN with PDA, loaded into SPEEK, and electrically oriented, shows the best overall performances. With a high tensile strength of 43.24 MPa and good flexibility, PDA@h-BN/SPEEK flexible film exhibits an in-plane thermal conductivity of 2.3 Wm −1 K −1 at a filling ratio of 10 wt%. The sample may be bent at a steep angle without breaking down and can recover to original shape bearing its high degree of flexibility.

Advances in Polymeric Neutron Shielding: The Role of Benzoxazine-h-BN Nanocomposites in Nuclear Protection

Abdous Slimane,Derradji Mehdi,Mekhalif Zineb,Khiari Karim,Mehelli Oussama,Cherif Younes Bourenane

Given their substantial neutron capture cross-section, extreme hardness, and high chemical and thermal stability, boron-based materials are widely used as building blocks to protect against highly ionizing radiations such as gamma rays and neutrons. Indeed, uncontrolled nuclear radiation exposure can be highly hazardous to radiation workers and the public. In this sense, this work presents an extensive study and experimental evaluation of the nuclear shielding features of hexagonal-boron nitride (h-BN) based nanocomposite, where bisphenol-A based polybenzoxazine (BA-PBz) was used as matrix. The neutron shielding studies were carried out at the nuclear research reactor of Algeria NUR. The surface treatment of h-BN nanoparticles was confirmed by FTIR and XPS techniques. The curing behavior and the degradation phenomena of the nanocomposites were evaluated by DSC-TGA analyses. The distribution of h-BN nanoparticles within the polymer matrix was assessed by TEM and SEM. The results showed that the developed boron nitride-based nanocomposite exhibits intriguing shielding performances and good thermal stability. The DSC-TGA tests exhibit high degradation temperature that reach 279°C. The highest performances were obtained at an h-BN concentration of 7 wt%, where the macroscopic cross was found to be (Σ = 3.844 cm –1 ) with a screening ratio of (S = 96.12%), equivalent to a mean free path (λ) of 0.138 cm.

Plasma treated h-BN nanoflakes as barriers to enhance anticorrosion of acrylic coating on steel

Bingjie Zou,Xijiang Chang,Jingxia Yang,Shuchuan Wang,Jingli Xu,Shirong Wang,Seiji Samukawa,Lidong Wang

h-BN nanoflakes were treated in three plasma gases (Ar、Ar+H 2 (4:1)、Ar + NH 3 (4:1)) for surface modification. The structure characterization (XRD, IR, XPS etc.) of h-BN indicated that the plasma treatment not only enlarged the interlayer distance of h-BN, but also increased the NH/OH surface groups and the ratio of exfoliated h-BN planes. The plasma treated h-BN exhibited better dispersion and stronger Fe 2+ holding ability in acrylic resin than the pristine h-BN, resulting in smaller corrosion current density (i corr ) and larger charge transfer resistance for the acrylic coating on low carbon steel, especially treated in Ar + NH 3 (4:1).

Synthesis of h-BN by the Combustion of B/KNO3/Octogen Mixture under Nitrogen Atmosphere

Song-qi Hu,Yin Wang,Lin-lin Liu

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) powders were fabricated by the combustion synthesis with B/KNO3/HMX (octogen) mixtures as reactants. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were adopted to investigate the phase composition and the chemical composition of the products, respectively. The morphology and resistance to oxidation were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetry (TGA), respectively. The characterization results showed that the h-BN which was produced through this method has high purity and exhibits excellent resistance to oxidation. The purity of h-BN is improved with the increasing content of HMX in reactants with boron carbide (B4C) and boron oxide (B2O3) as main impurity, but conversely, the yields are obviously decreased. Taking the comprehensive consideration of the purity and the yields together, the optimal molar ratio of B/KNO3/HMX is 10 : 1 : 4. In addition, the experimental results indicated that the crystalline grain size grows with the increasing content of HMX. The method explored in this study does not need expensive processing facilities and equipment, which is a preferable approach for the laboratory to prepare h-BN of high purity.
