For solar cells, high open circuit voltage is necessary for their high output voltage. Usually, two methods are used to increase the open circuit voltage: using suitable and matched large band-gap materials and reduction of saturation current. Herein, large band-gap p-type ZnSe nanowires and n-type CdS films are used to construct core–shell p–n heterojunctions with high open circuit voltage. Furthermore, a 4 nm Si3N4 layer is inserted between the ZnSe core and the CdS shell in order to passivate the interface defects and to reduce recombination and the saturation current. Additionally, a fast annealing process is employed to reduce the series resistance for improved performance. For a typical device, an optimum high open circuit voltage of ∼1.3 V and an energy conversion efficiency of ∼5.27% were achieved for its photovoltaic operation. Moreover, tens of devices were fabricated to demonstrate their stable and consistent performance.

A novel strategy is reported for the synthesis of glutathione (GSH)-protected bimetallic nanoclusters, Au-AgNCs@GSH, and its fabrication with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) into a film sensor for H 2 S gas detection. Meanwhile, carbon dots (CDs) synthesized from polyethyleneimine (PEI) are introduced as an internal standard to correct the photobleaching of Au-AgNCs@GSH and uniformity of film. The joining of it greatly improves the chemical and structural stability of the composite film via multi cross-linking between PEI, PVA, and GSH. The PVA-AuAgNCs-CDs film exhibits an emission-quenching response to H 2 S gas at atmosphere, which is highly repeatable, fast, sensitive, and can distinguish H 2 S from other poisonous gases. Finally, the in-depth mechanism investigations reveal that the quenching response is attributed to decomposition of Au-AgNCs@GSH and the formation of Au 2 S and Ag 2 S in the composite film. As a sensor, the PVA-supported film combines the functions of fluorescent metal nanoclusters and polymer CDs, providing a portable device for the rapid detection of H 2 S gas in air.

Aflatoxin B 1 (AFB 1 ), the most potent natural carcinogen, poses a serious threat to food security and human health. Hence, monitoring and controlling AFB 1 levels in food is of paramount importance. Nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) exhibit great potential for sensing applications, but their single-intensity signals are often susceptible to interference. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been widely applied in sensing and adsorption. By integrating N-CDs with COFs, a hybrid material named N-CDs/COF TAPB-DMTP was constructed as a ratiometric fluorescent probe for AFB 1 detection. The sensing platform not only retains the exceptional optical properties of N-CDs but also incorporates the superior adsorption capabilities of COFs. Here, N-CDs/COF TAPB-DMTP showed outstanding sensitivity with a remarkably low detection limit of 0.0876 ng/mL and a linear range from 0.5 to 100 ng/mL. The developed sensor also exhibited excellent reproducibility, anti-interference capability, and stability. In spiked food samples, satisfactory recovery rates of 90.00% to 126.00% were achieved. Furthermore, the probe accurately distinguished between AFB 1 -positive and negative peanuts, matching results from colloidal gold test cards and ELISA. Owing to its high surface area and selective sites, this composite showed an outstanding AFB 1 adsorption capability of 91.7431 mg/g. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to elucidate the adsorption mechanism between COF TAPB-DMTP and AFB 1 , which was shown to involve weak hydrogen bonds and π-π stacking interactions. Overall, a new dual-function platform has been constructed for the highly sensitive monitoring and efficient elimination of AFB 1 , offering a low-cost and simple-operating strategy with significant potential for food safety control.

Owing to their excellent fluorescence and other advantageous properties, quantum dots (QDs) are promising candidates for environmental monitoring. Although we synthesized previously CdS QDs using extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) produced by sulfate-reducing bacteria ( Desulfovibrio desulfuricans subsp. desulfuricans ) as biological template, systematic optimization of the synthesis conditions and in-depth investigation of their fluorescence properties remain limited. In the present study, based on an EPS-templated strategy, key synthesis parameters (such as pH, EPS concentration, and precursor ratios) were systematically optimized, enabling the successful extracellular preparation of bright cyan-green fluorescent CdS QDs with an emission maximum at 520 nm and a quantum yield of 11%. Comprehensive characterization confirmed their size (∼4.8 nm), good crystallinity (lattice spacing of 0.209 nm for the (220) plane), and successful formation of Cd-S bonds. FT-IR spectroscopy further indicated that the surface of the QDs was rich in functional groups such as carboxyl, hydroxyl, amino, and thiol groups, which significantly enhanced the colloidal stability of the CdS QDs in solution. The probe exhibited a response time of 5 min, high sensitivity (detection limit of 48 nM), a wide linear range (0–60 μM, R 2 = 0.992), and excellent selectivity for Cu 2+ . Time-resolved fluorescence studies suggested a dynamic quenching mechanism. Satisfactory recovery rates (99.52-110.11%) in real water samples (river and tap water) validated its practical applicability. This work presents a novel EPS-templated biosynthesis route for CdS QDs and establishes an efficient sensing platform, offering a promising strategy for rapid, low-cost heavy metal detection in environmental waters.

The
synergistic coupling of photocatalytic hydrogen production
with high-value-added organic conversion provides a new research direction
for the efficient use of solar energy and green chemical synthesis.
However, key challenges remain in the same catalytic system, such
as severe carrier recombination and difficulty in precisely controlling
the interfacial reaction pathways. To address these issues, we construct
CdS/TiO 2 heterojunction photocatalysts with Pt species
introduced by ion exchange and photodeposition. As a result, the Cd(Pt)S/TiO 2 –Pt composite photocatalyst is successfully prepared.
Under visible light irradiation, the catalyst achieves highly selective
conversion of 4-pyridinemethanol to the C–C coupling product
1, 2-di(4-pyridyl)-1,2-ethanediol, with a selectivity of 89.22%. Under
optimized reaction conditions, the maximum H 2 production
rate of the catalyst reaches 4.66 mmol·g –1 ·h –1 . Mechanistic studies show that the photogenerated
holes enriched on the surface of Cd(Pt)S drive the sp 3 C–H
dehydrogenation of 4-pyridinemethanol to form •CH(OH)C 5 H 4 N radicals, which then undergo radical coupling
to form new C–C bonds. Meanwhile, the photogenerated electrons
transfer through TiO 2 to the Pt active sites to participate
in hydrogen evolution. This study provides new insights into regulating
the selective conversion of radicals via interfacial electronic engineering
and designing photocatalytic coupled reaction systems.

Sulfur vacancies increase Cd site charge density, favoring end-on O 2 adsorption. • End-on adsorption inhibits O O bond cleavage, suppressing •OH radical formation. • Overoxidation of pyruvic acid is prevented, leading to 91.4% selectivity. The photocatalytic valorization of polylactic acid (PLA) into high-value pyruvic acid (PA) represents a sustainable pathway toward a circular carbon economy. However, the generation of non-selective reactive oxygen species (ROS) typically compromises product selectivity. Herein, we report a sulfur-vacancy-modified CdS photocatalyst (CdS v ), which was synthesized via a facile co-precipitation method and engineered to precisely regulate ROS generation. Experimental and theoretical analyses reveal sulfur vacancies (S v ) enrich the localized electron density at adjacent Cd sites. This electronic modulation promotes molecular oxygen (O 2 ) capture at these Cd centers and concurrently drives a shift in the binding geometry from a side-on to an end-on orientation. The specific adsorption configuration significantly inhibits O O bond cleavage to form hydroxyl radicals (•OH) through the oxygen reduction reaction, thereby effectively suppressing the overoxidation of PA. Consequently, remarkable PA generation efficiency is achieved over the optimized CdS v catalyst, yielding 13.2 mmol g −1 h −1 with a high selectivity of 91.4%, which significantly surpasses most previously reported results. This work provides a molecular-level paradigm for the selective upcycling of plastic waste by regulating the formation of specific ROS through vacancy engineering. Sulfur vacancies intrinsically enrich the electron density at proximal Cd centers, thereby favoring molecular oxygen (O 2 ) adsorption and shifting its adsorption configuration from side-on to end-on. This specific adsorption configuration of O 2 suppresses O O bond cleavage during the oxygen reduction reaction, thereby steering the pathway toward preferential superoxide radicals (•O 2 − ) generation and mitigating the hydroxyl radical (•OH)-induced over-oxidation. Early diagnosis and precise treatment of liver cancer represent critical directions in medical research. Theranostic strategies integrating bioimaging and drug delivery have demonstrated significant potential, offering advantages such as high precision, enhanced imaging clarity, and improved therapeutic efficacy. Room temperature phosphorescence carbon dots@silica composites (RTP CDs@SiO2) stand out in bioimaging for their excellent properties such as long phosphorescence lifetime and low toxicity. However, their irregular morphology and large particle size restrict applications in drug delivery. In this study, RTP CDs@SiO2 composites were synthesized in an an aqueous solution via three approaches with different alkaline additives: no alkaline additive, ammonia solution, and arginine. Through the synergistic effect of the guanidine group, amino group, and carboxyl group in arginine molecules, nanoparticles with an average particle size of 14.2 nm, a phosphorescence lifetime of 1398.91 ms, and a visible afterglow duration of 12 s were prepared. The resultant composites possessed favorable biocompatibility with low toxicity, as well as outstanding phosphorescence imaging performance both in vitro and in vivo. The RTP CDs drug delivery system (CDs@SiO2-HA-DOX) was further constructed by loading the targeting molecule hyaluronic acid (HA) and the chemotherapy drug doxorubicin (DOX) via electrostatic adsorption and covalent coupling using CDs@SiO2 as a carrier. Results demonstrated that this system achieved a maximum drug loading capacity of 49.39% and exhibited pH-dependent DOX release under weakly acidic conditions. In vitro antitumor experiments revealed that CDs@SiO2-HA-DOX reduced the viability of HepG2 cells to 22.95%. In vivo studies using tumor-bearing mouse models confirmed a tumor inhibition rate of 75.48%, demonstrating significant antitumor efficacy. This work represents the first successful application of RTP CD composites in drug delivery. The developed system shows great promise as a theranostic candidate for liver cancer by integrating drug delivery and RTP imaging, highlighting its significant potential for cancer therapy applications.

The new Zn-CDs were synthesized with a fluorescence quantum yield of 31.72%. • Zn-CDs exhibited strong antibacterial activity against both E. coli and S. aureus. • Zn-CDs were successfully utilized for MTZ detection by IFE and static quenching. Bacterial infections pose a major global health threat, highlighting the need for the development of effective antibacterial materials. Metronidazole (MTZ), a widely used antimicrobial agent, has raised concerns due to its misuse, emphasizing reliable detection methods. In this study, we synthesized zinc-doped carbon dots (Zn-CDs) via a hydrothermal method using hexahydrate zinc nitrate and histidine as precursors. Zn-CDs were thoroughly characterized for their optical properties, antibacterial activity, cytotoxicity, and potential for MTZ detection. Zn-CDs displayed a uniform spherical morphology with an average particle size of 4.65 nm and excitation-dependent fluorescence. Antibacterial assays revealed their effectiveness against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ), with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 313 μg/mL for both bacterial strains. Its antibacterial mechanism relied on the damage of bacterial cell membranes. Furthermore, Zn-CDs exhibited low cytotoxicity and hemolytic activity showing their excellent biocompatibility. Zn-CDs also displayed remarkable photostability, salt tolerance, and pH adaptability, making them suitable for diverse environments. For MTZ detection, Zn-CDs exhibited high specificity and anti-interference properties, with the fluorescence quenching mechanism attributed to the static quenching and internal filter effect (IFE). Furthermore, Zn-CDs were successfully applied to detect MTZ residues in honey, with recovery rates ranging from 92.3% to 101.7%. Overall, this study highlights the dual functionality of Zn-CDs as antibacterial agents and fluorescence-based sensors, offering promising applications in environmental monitoring and food safety analysis. The strong interfacial interaction between heterostructured semiconductors plays a vital role in enhancing the separation and transport efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers for photocatalytic applications. In this study, we report a stepwise synthesis strategy to fabricate a high-efficiency ternary heterojunction composed of NiS-decorated MoS₂/CdS with strong interfacial bonding (NS@SI-MCS). Initially, an amorphous MoSₓ layer was deposited onto CdS nanorods via chemical bath deposition, followed by thermal treatment in a reductive H₂/Ar atmosphere to form crystalline MoS₂ with strong interfacial coupling. This treatment not only improved the crystallinity of MoS₂ but also introduced sulfur vacancies, promoting enhanced interfacial contact and thereby strengthening electronic interactions and charge transport across the heterojunction. Subsequently, NiS nanoparticles were deposited as cocatalysts to facilitate efficient electron extraction and proton reduction. Comprehensive structural, optical, and electrochemical characterizations confirmed the formation of a well-integrated heterostructure, characterized by improved light absorption, suppressed charge recombination, and enhanced conductivity. The resulting NS@SI-MCS composite exhibited a remarkable hydrogen evolution rate of 5243 μmol h⁻¹g⁻¹ under visible light, approximately 16.6 times higher than pristine CdS. This enhancement is attributed to the synergistic effects of strong interfacial coupling of MoS₂/CdS and the catalytic contribution of NiS. This work provides valuable insight into designing strongly coupled heterojunctions and offers a scalable, noble-metal-free strategy for efficient solar-to-hydrogen conversion.

Carbon dots-based nanozymes show great potential for chemiluminescence (CL) detection due to their stability, excellent catalytic properties, good biocompatibility, and facile synthesis. In this study, bimetallic carbon dot nanoenzymes (Cur/Cu, Fe@CDs) that promote the chemiluminescence signal of luminol were synthesized. Cur/Cu, Fe@CDs possess high peroxidase (POD) activity and can catalyze the luminol/hydrogen peroxide reaction to generate a strong chemiluminescence intensity, which is approximately 8.98 times higher than the chemiluminescence spectral signal produced by the same concentration of K 3 [Fe(CN) 6 ]. Additionally, a sensitive and rapid method for detecting magnesium ions (Mg 2+ ) was developed by leveraging the enhancing effect of Mg 2+ on the CL signal in this system. The proposed CL technique for Mg 2+ demonstrated a linear response range from 3.33 to 166.67 µM and a detection limit of 0.99 µM. Moreover, the method was successfully applied to analyze Mg 2+ in cigarette paper samples through a spiking procedure, achieving a recovery rate of 91.1% to 109.0%. This research offers substantial evidence supporting the advancement of efficient and sensitive platforms for Mg 2+ CL detection.

1,2-Propanediol (1,2-PG) is a widely used industrial raw material, and excessive inhalation endangers human health, demanding efficient on-site detection. Conventional 1,2-PG gas sensors are constrained by poor selectivity, low response, and high operating temperatures. To address these limitations, this work employs Sc doping in CdS for 1,2-PG sensing and proposes a synergistic “lattice distortion-electronic-chemical-sensitization” strategy. Sc-doped flower-like CdS nanostructures were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method, with their physicochemical properties characterized by XRD, TEM, XPS, and BET. Results indicate uniform Sc incorporation into the CdS lattice without impurity phases, inducing lattice distortion, grain refinement, and optimized porosity. The 5 mol% Sc-doped CdS sensor exhibits superior performance at 180°C: an ultra-high response of 397.66–109 ppm 1,2-PG (13.26-fold that of pure CdS), a low detection limit of 144 ppb, excellent selectivity, rapid response-recovery, and good reproducibility. The enhanced sensing performance is attributed to Sc-induced synergistic structural modulation, electronic and chemical sensitization originating from lattice distortion and modified-surface properties. This work not only provides a facile strategy for fabricating high-performance 1,2-PG gas sensors but also contributes to the advancement of environmental monitoring technologies, offering reliable technical support for controlling 1,2-PG-related environmental pollution.

In nanosynthesis, precise structural tailoring is crucial for modulating the properties of hybrid materials. For photocatalysts, structural configuration of the composed materials is a key factor for improving their efficiency. In this study, the CdS-CeO 2 hybrids in core-satellite and core-shell structures were successfully synthesized via accurate kinetic control in a seed-mediated growth process. Due to the Z -scheme charge transfer mechanism, excellent photocatalytic activity was observed in photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) and CO 2 reduction reactions (CO 2 RR). Notably, the Janus-type core-satellite structure exhibited significantly higher photocatalytic activity than the core-shell structure. Mechanistic analysis revealed that the spatial separation of the CdS and CeO 2 domains in core-satellite structure led to continuous fast separation and transfer of the photogenerated holes and electrons (h + and e − ) to different exposed domains, whereby can be depleted immediately, resembling the electron sink effect. While in core-shell structure, the transfer of the excited carriers to different domain would inevitably cause charge accumulation at the inner core, which obstruct the further charge separation and transfer. Our study provides an effective general way for promoting the charge separation efficiency in hybrid photocatalyst, which is helpful for the rational design and synthesis of advanced photocatalyst.
