The growing accumulation of waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) has raised great concern about its effective upcycling. Catalytic fast pyrolysis is a promising method for selectively upcycling of waste PET into aromatics. However, the high temperature and poor mass transfer performance remain considerably challenging. In this research, a diffusion-enhanced hollow ZSM-5 catalyst with Ru modification was designed for low-temperature valorization of waste PET into aromatics. Ru species significantly enhanced the primary depolymerization of long-chain polymers by generating abundant Lewis acid sites, which markedly increased the aromatics content. Additionally, the mesopore-rich structure formed after Ru-modification improved diffusion capacity of products effectively. The existing of active Ru 0 species was beneficial to the hydro-upgrading of oxygen-containing intermediates, therefore monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) content and hydrogen atom utilization increased to a great extent. More gratifyingly, the pyrolysis temperature for preparing aromatics from waste PET was obviously lowered, probably due to the synergistic effect of diffusion-enhanced structure and Ru modification. Ru/ZH exhibited higher aromatics yield of 46.4 wt% with selectivity of 95.3 % at 500 °C, resulting in a significant mass yield increase of 93.1 % compared to unmodified hollow ZSM-5 (24.0 wt%). Finally, the plausible pathway for PET-to-aromatics via catalytic fast pyrolysis over Ru/ZH was proposed.

Electrocatalytic water splitting has been demonstrated to be a highly efficient and promising technology for green hydrogen production. However, the inefficiency and instability of the cathode hinder its wide application in water electrolysis. Herein, we report a rapid Joule heating method for synthesizing the Ru-Mo oxide catalyst. Comprehensive characterization results confirmed that the as-prepared catalyst featured an internal porous structure with low crystallinity, which weakened the strength of Ru-H bonds through structural and electronic modulation. The enhanced HER performance was attributed to the incorporation of Mo4+species, which strengthened Ru-O-Mo interactions. As tested, the optimized catalyst exhibited ultralow overpotentials (25.08 mV and 120.52 mV @ 10 and 100 mA cm−2, respectively) and excellent stability (100 h @ 100 mA cm−2) in a 1 M KOH solution. Meanwhile, the as-prepared catalyst was equipped in an anion exchange membrane (AEM) alkaline water electrolyzer, which could deliver 185 mA cm−2at only 2.16 V with 100% Faradaic efficiency. This study provides a feasible strategy for constructing highly efficient low-crystallinity electrocatalysts.

Manipulating the electronic structure of heterogeneous catalysts to optimize the adsorption behavior of hydrogen intermediate (H*) is essential for enhancing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), representing a key objective in advancing efficient hydrogen (H 2 ) production. Herein, we have engineered the electronic configuration by coupling ruthenium (Ru) nanoparticles with molybdenum carbide (Mo 2 C)/N-doped carbon fibers (NCF) to greatly enhance the electrocatalytic alkaline/acidic-universal HER performance. The obtained Ru@Mo 2 C/NCF catalyst exhibits ultralow overpotentials of 182 and 193 mV at an industrial-grade current density (1 A cm⁻ 2 ) in 1 M KOH and 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , respectively, significantly surpassing commercial Pt/C and many traditional HER catalysts. The catalyst also demonstrates an exceptional long-term stability in both alkaline and acidic conditions, even greatly better than Pt/C catalyst. Theoretical analysis reveals that the coupling of Ru with Mo 2 C/NCF optimize the H* adsorption and facilitates H 2 releasing. Furthermore, a zinc-water (Zn-H 2 O) battery is assembled to realize highly efficient and simultaneous H 2 and electricity generation, demonstrating its practicability.

The efficient ammonia decomposition catalysts are crucial for advancing the application of hydrogen energy produced from ammonia. Herein, La 2 Ti 2 O 7 and LaTiO 2 N are developed as supports for constructing efficient Ru/La 2 Ti 2 O 7 and Ru/LaTiO 2 N ammonia decomposition catalysts. Compared with monoxide supported catalysts such as Ru/La 2 O 3 , Ru/TiO 2 and Ru/SiO 2 , Ru/La 2 Ti 2 O 7 shows higher activity, achieving an NH 3 conversion rate of 66.5% at 450 °C with a fairly low Ru loading amount (about 1.4 wt%). Using Ru/LaTiO 2 N, we achieve an even higher NH 3 conversion rate (76.1%), hydrogen production rate (1556 mmol/(g Ru ·min)), and 140-hour catalytic stability at 450 °C with a GHSV of 30000 mL/(g cat ·h). Various characterizations demonstrate that the presence of Ti n + is conductive to the adsorption of NH 3 , while the presence of La 3+ with its coordinated O 2– endows La 2 Ti 2 O 7 and LaTiO 2 N with robust surface basicity facilitating the recombination and desorption of N*, together assisting the active metal Ru to catalyze ammonia decomposition. This study provides new material options and design insights from the collective contribution of multiple atom sites in a complex multicomponent heterogeneous catalytic system for the development of efficient Ru-based ammonia decomposition catalysts.

In this paper, we successfully prepared Ru-doped Co 3 O 4 flower-like hollow microspheres by a simple hydrothermal method . The microstructure characterization results indicated the formation of well-organized microflowers with a size of 0.5–1 µm, which were composed of nanosheets . The gas sensing performances of sensors by using the synthesized Ru-doped Co 3 O 4 hollow microflowers as sensing material were investigated. The 1 at% Ru-doped Co 3 O 4 sensor showed the best acetone sensing performance and had a response 18.8–10 ppm acetone, which was almost 5.4 times that of pure Co 3 O 4 . Significantly, the sensor had an ultra-low detection limit, with a response value of 1.5–50 ppb acetone at 137.5 °C (30%RH). We propose a plausible mechanism for sensing performance improvement. Namely, the substitution of Ru 4+ regulated the carrier concentration and induced the change of Co 3 O 4 defect oxygen and chemisorbed oxygen.

Two new Ru(II) complexes containing O, O-chelated ligands, Ru(dip)2(SA) (Ru-1) and Ru(dmp)2(SA) (Ru-2) (dip = 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline; dmp = 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline; SA = salicylate) were synthesized to evaluate their cytotoxicity in vitro. These complexes were found to exhibit moderate antitumor activity to different types of human cancers, including A549 (human lung carcinoma), MCF-7 (breast cancer), HeLa (human cervical cancer), and HepG2 (human hepatocellular carcinoma) cell lines, but displayed low toxicity to human normal cell lines BEAS-2B (immortalized human bronchial epithelial cells) when compared with that of cisplatin. Further studies revealed that these complexes could induce apoptosis in A549 cells, including activating caspase family proteins and poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), reducing Bcl-2/Bax and Bcl-xl/Bad ratio, enhancing cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, triggering DNA damage, decreasing mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), and leading cytochrome c release from mitochondria. Notably, complex Ru-1 showed low toxicity to developing zebrafish embryos. The obtained results suggest that these new synthetic complexes have the potential to be developed as low-toxicity agents for lung cancer treatment.

As technology nodes shrink below 10 nm, stricter demands are required for the one-step polishing of copper (Cu) films in ruthenium (Ru)-based Cu interconnects: a high Cu removal rate (RR) and a near-zero Ru RR. In this work, an eco-friendly slurry was newly formulated by combining hydroxyethylethylene diphosphonic acid (HEDP) and phytic acid (PA), both containing phosphate groups, to enhance corrosion inhibition and polishing performance during Cu/Ru CMP. Polishing and electrochemical experiments demonstrated that the synergistic inhibitors achieved a corrosion inhibition efficiency of 96 % for Cu. Under optimized conditions, the material removal rates (MRRs) of Cu and Ru reached 5432 Å/min and 10 Å/min, respectively, with a maximum removal rate selectivity (RRS) of 543:1 and surface roughness ( Sqs ) of 0.76 nm and 0.53 nm. Contact angle, coefficient of friction (COF), Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses confirmed the formation of a protective passivation film on Cu/Ru surfaces from both mechanical and chemical perspectives. Theoretical calculations identified the reactive sites of the inhibitors and simulated their adsorption behavior in a CMP environment, revealing that the synergistic inhibitors exhibited the highest adsorption energy. Without the use of surfactants, the multifunctional synergistic inhibitors improved surface quality through lubrication and passivation effects while reducing reagent consumption. This work provides both theoretical and practical guidance for the design of green and efficient CMP slurries in advanced semiconductor manufacturing.

Acetylene coupling with ethylene dichloride, which uses both coal and oil resources, is attractive for sustainable PVC manufacturing. Herein, highly active and stable carbon nitride-based catalysts were developed by a novel pre-oxidation-pyrolysis process, affording unprecedented dehydrochlorination activity with good durability. The best-performing system was further modified with different precious metals (Au, Pt, and Ru) to promote the hydrochlorination chemistry between the in-situ formed hydrogen chloride and acetylene co-feed. The presence of metal centers intensifies the hydrochlorination activity but weakens the dehydrochlorination ability due to competitive adsorption between the two reactants at the metal sites. Superior coupling performance was achieved over C 3 N 4 /AC and single-atom Au/C 3 N 4 /AC catalysts in cascade reactors. Our results strongly suggest that dehydrochlorination is an essential step in the coupling reaction, and the activation of acetylene and ethylene dichloride molecules requires different active sites that should be engineered in future work.

CH 3 Br catalytic oxidation as the probe reaction was investigated over Ru supported on TiO 2 with different crystalline phases. 1% Ru/anatase TiO 2 (a-TiO 2 ) exhibited superior stability at 240 °C after a 180 h time-on-stream run. And there was an induced activation for 1% Ru/a-TiO 2 during the initial 60 h reaction. Then the activity sustained stable. To elucidate the intrinsic mechanism, a series of characterizations were performed such as XRD, CO-Pulse, H 2 -TPR, XPS and NH 3 -TPD etc. Results showed that the Ru particle size increased and the Ru 0 content decreased as the reaction proceeded, which were not conductive to the reaction. It was assumed that the catalytic activity was strongly dependent on other factors. In combination with NH 3 -TPD and Py-FTIR measurements, it was confirmed that the enhanced activity and stability was strongly associated with the surface acidity, especially moderate strong Lewis acid (L acid). The increase of the acid amount and acidity strength was led by the generation and adsorption of HBr, Br 2 and RuO x Br y during the reaction, among which HBr and Br 2 was easier to desorb at 250 °C. While moderate strong L acid was sourced from the formation of RuO x Br y . The addition of transition metal (Ce, Co, Mn, Nb and Ni) further validated that the moderate strong L acid played a decisive role in the CH 3 Br catalytic oxidation.

Rational regulation of the coordination environment of Ru active sites by employing layered transition metal hydroxides as the substrate could achieve high catalytic performance towards the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, it is still challenging to clarify the interactions between the Ru catalysts and the layered transition metal hydroxides in different phases and also to unveil the mechanism responsible for the boosted performance. Herein, we report novel Ru nanocluster-decorated few-layer Co(OH)2 nanosheets, which are employed as a model to investigate the structure–property relationship between zero-dimensional (0D) noble metal catalysts and two-dimensional (2D) substrates toward electrochemical reactions. The obtained α-Co(OH)2-Ru catalyst exhibits a very low potential difference (ΔE) of 0.557 V between the half-wave potential towards the ORR and the potential at 10 mA cm−2 towards the OER, which is smaller than those of β-Co(OH)2-Ru (0.614 V), α-Co(OH)2 (0.774 V) and β-Co(OH)2 (0.897 V). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further reveal that the reaction energy barrier of the rate-determining step of α-Co(OH)2-Ru is much smaller than those of β-Co(OH)2-Ru and Ru, implying that the strong electronic interactions between Ru nanoclusters and layered α-Co(OH)2 nanosheets contribute majorly to the enhanced catalytic performance. Furthermore, the optimized α-Co(OH)2-Ru nanohybrid is employed as the air electrode to assemble rechargeable Zn–air batteries, which possesses a power density of 187.8 mW cm−2 and a long-term durability of 400 cycles without obvious attenuation.

The problem of safe and efficient storage and transportation of hydrogen energy limits the large-scale development of the “hydrogen economy”. The liquid organic hydrogen storage technology is based on reversible catalytic hydrogenation and dehydrogenation reactions of unsaturated compounds to achieve safe and efficient storage and release of hydrogen. Heterogeneous catalysts with excellent catalytic capacity and stability should be developed to drive the reactions. However, it is a challenge to develop these catalysts. We fabricated a series of RuPd-based and supported catalysts following two different methods, and the catalytic hydrogenation and dehydrogenation activities of these catalysts were systematically investigated. The experiment results implied that the Pd2.5Ru2.5/H2 (double reduction method) catalyst exhibited catalytic hydrogenation rates that were similar to those of Pd2.5Ru2.5/L (when reduced by NaBH4). The former exhibited much better catalytic dehydrogenation rates than the latter. The Pd2.5Ru2.5/H2 catalyst also exhibited much better catalytic recyclability than the Pd2.5Ru2.5/L catalyst, and the conclusion was arrived at by conducting 10 cycles of hydrogenation–dehydrogenation tests. The relationship between the catalytic performances and the catalyst's properties was further investigated using a combination of H2-TPR, NH3-TPD, XPS, and TEM techniques. The characterization results revealed that the double reduction process could be used to enhance the extent of electronic interaction of the RuPd active sites with the support, and more numbers of strong acidic sites and active sites could be generated. Furthermore, DFT calculations also revealed that 8H-NPCZ and 4H-NPCZ formed stable adsorption structures on the Ru3Pd3/Al2O3(100) surface, facilitating catalytic reactions. Notably, the reaction energies of Ru3Pd3/Al2O3(100) were 1.16 eV, 1.42 eV, and 1.63 eV, indicating that the dehydrogenation process (8H-NPCZ → 4H-NPCZ and 4H-NPCZ → NPCZ) occurred easily. All the above-mentioned characteristics make the Pd2.5Ru2.5/H2 catalyst an excellent catalyst for hydrogenation and dehydrogenation and endow it with outstanding catalytic capacity and recyclability.

The design and fabrication of highly active hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts that can outperform Pt/C are extremely desirable but remain challenging. Herein, the fabrication of S-doped hollow mesoporous carbon anchored Ru nanoclusters (Ru NCs/S-HMCs) is reported as a novel and highly active HER electrocatalyst through modified Stöber process and subsequent hydrothermal treatment, in which Ru NCs (1.64 nm in size) are uniformly anchored into S-HMCs channels. Benefiting from the unique electronic structure induced by S doping and the spatial confinement effect of the mesoporous carbon, the Ru NCs/S-HMCs catalyst exhibits excellent pH-universal HER activity, requiring only 3.5, 61.0, and 63.5 mV of overpotential to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline, neutral, and acidic electrolytes, respectively. In 1 M KOH, 0.5 M H2SO4, and 0.5 M PBS solutions, Ru NCs/S0.5-HMCs exhibits high mass activities of 21542, 2998 and 7088 mA mgRu−1 at an overpotential of -50 mV, respectively. The excellent activity stems from: (1) the pore confinement effect, which promotes the formation of ultrasmall Ru NCs (1.64 nm) and suppresses metal leaching; (2) S doping, which modulates the electronic structure of Ru and reduces the water dissociation barrier; and (3) the hollow mesoporous architecture, which accelerates mass and electron transport. This work provides insights for designing high-efficiency pH-universal electrocatalysts.
