Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) can be used as catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and pollutants degradation under visible light irradiation. However, its efficiency is relative slow in comparison with copper and cobalt oxide catalysts. In this study, iron oxide modified g-C 3 N 4 catalysts (Fe 2 O 3 /g-C 3 N 4 ) were prepared by a simple thermal treatment method using urea and ferric nitrate as precursors. The materials were thoroughly characterized by a variety of techniques and their activity was evaluated for degradation of Acid orange 7 (AO7) and other dyes under visible light irradiation in the presence of PMS, with nearly complete degradation of all the pollutants obtained within 40 min. The prepared Fe 2 O 3 /g-C 3 N 4 catalysts were also proved more efficient than the single components and were stable during multiple runs. The enhanced photoactivity can be attributed to 1) the higher surface area, supplying more surface active sites and making charge carriers transport easier; 2) improved optical properties with narrower band-gap energies and increased visible light absorption efficiency, and 3) the participation of iron species in the reaction with production of more radicals. Thus, the low cost Fe 2 O 3 /g-C 3 N 4 composites with a facile synthesis process are very promising photocatalysts for PMS activation and pollutants degradation.

A “green” method for the preparation of starch- g -poly(butyl acrylate) (starch- g -PBA) copolymers using a biocatalyst, horseradish peroxidase (HRP), in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and acetylacetone (Acac) was developed. The chemical structures and thermal properties of the grafted starch were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 1 H NMR), elemental analysis, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). FT-IR, elemental analysis, and 1 H NMR confirmed that PBA was successfully grafted onto starch by HRP-mediated graft copolymerization. DSC and TGA results showed that the grafting of PBA chains improved the thermal stability of starch. The effects of grafting on the rheological properties of the starch pastes were also studied. Compared to control starch, the grafted starch paste had higher viscosity and showed better elastic behavior. The effects of gelatinization and addition of ethanol on the graft copolymerization were also investigated. The results indicated that gelatinization and addition of ethanol improved the grafting percentage (GP, 5.66%) and grafting efficiency (GE, 19.39%).

Nitrogen-rich carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 5 ) nanosheets were modified with polydopamine (PDA) and then incorporated into an epoxy resin (EP) matrix to create a g-C 3 N 5 @PDA modified epoxy (GP/EP) coating. The phase composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties were analyzed using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and nano-indentation. The corrosion behavior was investigated by applying the coating to a steel plate and immersing it in a NaCl solution for 20 days using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization tests. Molecular dynamics simulations were also conducted to elucidate the corrosion mechanism. The results indicated that the hardness and elastic modulus of the epoxy coating increased from 0.02 GPa to 0.26 GPa and from 0.92 GPa to 2.90 GPa, respectively, after the modification of g-C 3 N 5 nanosheets with PDA. Additionally, the corrosion current density of the GP/EP-coated steel plate was measured at 0.51 μA/cm 2 , which is approximately 17 times lower than that of the EP-coated plate when immersed in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution.

A novel heterogeneous nanocomposite photocatalyst ZnO/g-C 3 N 4 was fabricated by secondary high-temperature calcination using g-C 3 N 4 and ZnO as raw materials and characterized by XRD , SEM , TEM, EDS , FT-IR, Zeta potential , UV-Vis and XPS . The results displayed that the ZnO/g-C 3 N 4 components were tightly bound, evenly distributed and significantly reduced in size, which could provide more active sites. The heterogeneous types, photocatalytic performance, degradation mechanism of ZnO/g-C 3 N 4 for dyeing wastewater were speculated by REDOX potential, heterojunction , and quenching experiments. The degradation efficiency of ZnO/g-C 3 N 4 on MB was much higher compared with that of single ZnO, g-C 3 N 4 and the mechanical mixture of ZnO and g-C 3 N 4 , which can reach more than 95% at 60 min. The degradation rate was also significantly improved, with the degradation rate exceeding 50% at 20 min. The composite ZnO/g-C 3 N 4 could degraded 90% MB after 5 cycles. The quenching experiment showed that hydroxyl (·OH) and photogenerated hole (h + ) played the main role in the reaction process. It was confirmed that the prepared ZnO/g-C 3 N 4 formed a Z-scheme photocatalytic system by examining the transfer paths of e - and h + in various types of heterojunction and contrasting the CB and VB energy levels with the REDOX potentials of ZnO and g-C 3 N 4 . The Z-Scheme ZnO/g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst has the characteristics of stability, reusability, and no by-product, making it an ideal choice for environmental purification.

Preparation of high-performance carbon materials with an abundance of heteroatoms, edges, and defects for sustainable energy-conversion technologies, such as supercapacitors and oxygen reaction reduction (ORR), are still a challenge. Herein, we reported a facile strategy for the large-scale synthesis of nitrogen-doped porous carbon via carbonization of core-shell structured protonated g-C 3 N 4 @polypyrrole (P- g -C 3 N 4 @PPy) nanocomposites . Polypyrrole provided both the carbon and heteroatom sources, while P-g-C 3 N 4 acted not only as a sacrificial template but also as nitrogen sources. Porous carbon derived from P-g-C 3 N 4 @PPy (denoted as PCN@PPy-C-900) exhibited a specific capacitance of 350 F g −1 at a current density of 5 A g −1 and a high-rate capability (320 F g −1 ) at 20 A g −1 in 6 M KOH aqueous solution, as well as good long-term stability after 1000 cycles. In addition, PCN@PPy-C-900 also displayed excellent electrocatalytic performances in ORR in 0.1 M KOH aqueous solution. The excellent electrochemical performances provide guidance for the structure design of this promising class of multifunctional carbon-based materials which can be large scale applied to supercapacitors, ORR, and other fields.

Nitrogen defect engineering has been deemed to be a promising strategy to overcome the inherent shortcomings, i.e., sluggish charge separation and limited spectral response range, of g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst . Herein, the construction of nitrogen-deficient g-C 3 N 4 has been developed via a simple approach of modulating the type of urea precursor. The experimental investigation and theoretical calculations reveal that this novel route endows g-C 3 N 4 with distinctive nitrogen defects, accompanying the decreased bandgap and the formation of midgap states under the conduction band edge , thus remarkably broadening the visible-light harvesting capability. Furthermore, the N defect also results in enhanced electrical conductivity , which greatly improves the charge carrier transfer and separation for photoredox reaction. As a result, the novel g-C 3 N 4 , named DCN, delivers a significantly high visible-light-responsive H 2 evolution rate of 6.0 mmol h −1 g −1 under visible light irradiation, which is more than 5 times higher than that of the g-C 3 N 4 (CN) synthesized using the common urea precursor. This work opens a novel avenue to fabricate nitrogen defect-regulated g-C 3 N 4 for highly efficient H 2 evolution and must intrigue a new wave of research upsurge on this kind of photocatalyst .

2D/2D MgAl-LDH/g-C 3 N 4 composites were synthesized via electrostatic self-assembly method in aqueous solution. The MgAl-LDH nanosheets were uniformly anchored on the surface of g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets, which constructed a MgAl-LDH/g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction, thus facilitated the separation and transport of photogenerated electron and hole pairs and improved the photocatalytic degradation performance. The photocatalytic activity of the MgAl-LDH/g-C 3 N 4 composites strengthened with the increasing of MgAl-LDH content, reached the optimum for the sample 30 %MACN (containing 30 wt% of MgAl-LDH), and then gradually decreased. Under the visible light irradiation for 150 min, 30 %MACN composite degraded 80.1 % of ciprofloxacin (CIP), and its first-order reaction rate constant was 2.04 times that of pure g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets. Additionally, the effects of the catalyst dosage, pH value and the initial concentration of CIP on the degradation efficiency of CIP were investigated. Moreover, 30 %MACN exhibited outstanding stability and recyclability, as well as good universality for degrading organic pollutants, including norfloxacin, methylene blue, tetracycline and crystal violet. The degradation pathway and the mechanism of CIP were proposed. This work provided a feasible green way to synthesis MgAl-LDH/g-C 3 N 4 composite photocatalyst with high performance for removing pollutants in wastewater.

TiO2has broad prospects in reducing the safety risks posed by emerging pollutants in water environments. However, the high recombination rate of photogenerated carriers limits the activity and photon utilization efficiency of TiO2. In this study, mesoporous TiO2(m-TiO2) and ultra-thin g-C3N4nanosheets were composited using a hydrothermal method, with the m-TiO2tightly and uniformly wrapped by g-C3N4. The chemical structure, elemental composition, and optical properties of the heterojunction were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis-DRS). The activity of the m-TiO2@g-C3N4was evaluated by the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH). Results showed that the heterojunction exhibited significantly enhanced reactivity compared to pure m-TiO2and g-C3N4, with kinetic rates of TCH being 1.48 and 6.84 times that of pure m-TiO2and g-C3N4, respectively. The TCH degradation kinetic rate varied from 0.194 min−1to 0.026 min−1and then decreased to 0.015 min−1on the scale of the bandgap and the number of absorbed photons in m-TiO2@g-C3N4. Concurrently, a 10wt% doping amount of g-C3N4significantly increased the reaction rate of photogenerated carriers in the system compared to the recombination rate, corresponding to excellent photon efficiency. Reproducibility was evaluated, and a possible degradation mechanism is proposed. This study opens new perspectives for the optimization of catalyst preparation processes aimed at enhancing photon efficiency.

A composite photocatalyst composed of carbonaceous material and g-C 3 N 4 is fabricated by a simple thermal treatment of melamine (hydrothermally treated melamine) with cellulose acetate. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and elemental analysis data reveal the formation of carbonaceous material in the composites. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the H 2 liberation rate from water splitting under visible-light irradiation. The optimized composite, which is prepared from the precursor of hydrothermally treated melamine with cellulose acetate, shows 35 times higher photocatalytic activity than bulk g-C 3 N 4 (melamine as the precursor) and a quantum efficiency of 1.05% (0.01 g of catalyst) under irradiation at 420 nm. The enhancement of the photocatalytic activity is ascribed to the unique electronic properties of the carbonaceous material, the enlarged specific surface area and the improved light absorption.

The electrocatalytic two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e-ORR) represents one of the most prospective avenues for the in situ synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). However, the four-electron competition reaction constrains the efficiency of H2O2 synthesis. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop superior catalysts to facilitate the H2O2 synthesis. In this study, graphite-phase carbon nitride and cerium dioxide composites (g-C3N4/CeO2) with varying CeO2 loadings were prepared with favorable 2e-ORR electrocatalysts. The optimized composite, containing 20 wt % CeO2 (g-C3N4/CeO2-20%) exhibited the highest Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 97% and notable H2O2 yielding of 9.84 mol gcat.–1 h–1 at the potential of 0.3 V (vs RHE) in a 0.1 M KOH electrolyte. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the improvement of the selectivity and yield of H2O2 for the composites were attributed to the charge transfer between g-C3N4 and CeO2, which causes the active site C atom donating electrons to form C+, thereby enhancing the adsorption and desorption of *OOH intermediates. Additionally, the g-C3N4/CeO2-20% composite exhibits excellent 2e-ORR performance in neutral and acidic electrolytes and demonstrates superior capability in electro-Fenton degradation of organic pollutants. This study not only provides new insights into the electrocatalytic mechanism of g-C3N4/CeO2 composites but also demonstrates an effective method for designing 2e-ORR catalysts.

Deferasirox (DEF) is an important iron chelator for treatment of iron overload–related diseases. Monitoring DEF concentration in human serum will provide some valuable information for clinical diagnosis and therapy of such diseases. In this study, we developed a peroxidase-mimicking colorimetric sensor for the detection of DEF by simple assembly of a telomeric dimeric G-quadruplex DNAzyme with Cu 2+ . The DNAzyme–catalyzed oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine in the presence of H 2 O 2 can generate a quantitative colorimetric signal, and the color change can be discerned by the naked eye. Compared with the reaction rate of the monomeric G-quadruplex–Cu 2+ DNAzyme, the reaction rate of the dimeric G-quadruplex–Cu 2+ (G2–Cu 2+ ) DNAzyme is significantly accelerated, and the reaction rate gradually increases and then reaches a plateau with increasing number of TTA spacers. Herein, the G2–Cu 2+ DNAzyme is chosen for the highly sensitive detection of DEF based on the DEF–Cu 2+ complex–induced inhibition of its peroxidase-mimicking activities. The limit of detection (LOD) of DEF is achieved as low as 0.03 μM, and the linear range is from 0.05 to 1.2 μM. The proposed strategy exhibits excellent selectivity in the presence of potential interferents, such as metal ions and small molecules. Importantly, the G2–Cu 2+ DNAzyme is further expanded to detect DEF in dispersible tablets and human serum samples. Overall, this G2–Cu 2+ DNAzyme provides a simple, low-cost, and rapid platform for DEF detection. This novel strategy is the first example of DEF analysis by utilizing signal amplification technology based on the G-quadruplex DNAzyme and holds great potential for DEF quality control and therapeutic drug monitoring.

The properties of graphite-phase carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) catalysts, made of distinct precursors, exhibit significant differences in microstructure and photocatalytic performance. However, systematic studies on their effectiveness in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for pollutant degradation remain limited. Three different kinds of g-C 3 N 4 photocatalysts—CNM, CND, and CNT—were produced in this study by pyrolyzing melamine, dicyandiamide, and thiourea, respectively. Notably, CNM exhibited high crystallinity, reduced layer spacing, and abundant nitrogen defects, contributing to a decreased recombination rate of photogenerated electrons and enhancing its photocatalytic performance. CNM activated PMS with remarkable efficiency, accomplishing a degradation rate of 95.8 % in the PMS/Light system, significantly higher than when CNM and PMS were used separately. Quenching experiments indicated that the primary active species were superoxide radicals ( • O 2 − ), singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), and photogenerated holes (h + ) during degradation. Furthermore, CNM demonstrated excellent catalytic activity and stability across various pH levels and in complex environments with various inorganic anions, highlighting its strong resistance to interference. For developing low-cost and stable photocatalysts for organic wastewater degradation, this study presents an advanced approach.
