A type of isocyano-functionalized, 1,8-naphthalimide-based chromophore ( M2 ) was successfully synthesized from its primary amine-derivatived precursor ( M1 ) compound. The chemical structure of M2 was verified by FT-IR, NMR and HRMS analyses. The presence of electron-withdrawing isocyano group brought significant influence to the optical properties of M2 . Distinct from the yellowish green emission of its precursor ( M1 ), M2 emitted ultraviolet light (with the emission peak at ∼389 nm, excited by 352 nm) in THF-water [V THF /V water = 3/7, buffered with 5 mM sodium dihydrogen phosphate-disodium hydrogen phosphate (PB), pH = 7.4] co-solvent system. Interestingly, M2 exhibited distinctive and selective optical response (with significant enhancement of emission at ∼560 nm) toward Hg 2+ . In Hg 2+ titration process, PL spectra of M2 displayed contiguous ratiometric alteration (simultaneous decreasing at 389 nm and increasing at 560 nm). Hg 2+ -assisted hydration of isocyano group to amino group on M2 was proposed as the plausible probing mechanism in this current case.

Four 1,8-naphthyridine derivatives (1a–1d) with different organelle targeting abilities were obtained using the Knoevenagel condensation reaction of 1,8-naphthyridine with 4-(N,N-diethylamino)benzaldehyde (2a), 4-(N,N-diphenylamino)benzaldehyde (2b), 4-(piperazin-1-yl)benzaldehyde (2c) and 4-(ethyl(4-formylphenyl)amino)-N-(2-((4-methylphenyl)sulfonamido)ethyl)butanamide (2d), respectively. The maximal absorption bands of dyes 1a–1d were observed at 375–447 nm, while their maximum emission peaks were situated at 495–605 nm. The optical properties showed that the fluorescence emission of dyes 1a–1d is shifted toward greater wavelengths as the system polarity (Δf) increased. Meanwhile, with increasing polarity of the mixed 1,4-dioxane/H2O system, the fluorescence intensity of dyes 1a–1d gradually decreased. Furthermore, the fluorescence intensity of 1a–1d enhanced by 12–239 fold as the polarity of 1,4-dioxane/H2O mixtures declined. 1a–1d had a large Stokes shift (up to 229 nm) in polar solvents in comparison to nonpolar solvents. The colocalization imaging experiments demonstrated that dyes 1a–1d (3–10 μM) were located in mitochondria, lipid droplets, lysosomes and the endoplasmic reticulum in living HeLa cells, respectively; and they could monitor the polarity fluctuation of the corresponding organelles. Consequently, this work proposes a molecular design idea with different organelle targeting capabilities based on the same new fluorophore, and this molecular design idea may provide more alternatives for polarity-sensitive fluorescent probes with organelle targeting.

Inspired by nature, a zeolitic-imidazolate framework-8@reduced graphene oxide (ZIF-8@rGO) aerogel was developed to remove tetracycline (TC) from water. The ZIF-8 nanoparticles grown on the rGO aerogel act like the many tentacles of a coral to hunt TC, and the rGO aerogel not only acts as a substrate but also acts like the belly of the coral, which can accommodate a large number of pollutants. Benefiting from these advantages, the ZIF-8@rGO aerogel can decontaminate TC, and showed an excellent adsorption capacity of 1776.26 mg g −1 . Based on the experimental tests and characterization analysis, we speculated that the adsorption mechanism between TC and ZIF-8@rGO aerogel was mainly related to the hydrogen-bonding interactions, π-π interaction and electrostatic attraction. This discovery could be transformative for the removal of different types of pollutants by means of adjusting the functional groups of the materials and their composite technology.

In this work, we applied metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as a porous matrix to encapsulate Cu nanoparticles (NPs) for nonenzymatic glucose sensing in alkaline media . SEM and TEM confirmed that the size of the encapsulated Cu NPs ranges from 2.5 to 5 nm. The hybrid of Cu NPs encapsulated in ZIF-8 (Cu-in-ZIF-8) was further modified onto screen-printed electrodes for nonenzymatic sensing of glucose in alkaline medium. The porous structure of ZIF-8 are beneficial for the unimpeded diffusion of glucose and reaction product. And as a matrix for encapsulating Cu NPs, ZIF-8 also protect the Cu NPs from dissolution and agglomeration during the electrocatalytic process. For comparison, the electrochemical performance of Cu NPs loaded on ZIF-8 (Cu-on-ZIF-8) was also investigated and it is found that Cu-in-ZIF-8 exhibited higher activity and better stability for cyclic test toward the oxidation of glucose in alkaline media. Additionally, Cu-in-ZIF-8 based glucose sensor also shows a favorable sensitivity and selectivity.

Membrane-based separation technologies are promising for various applications such as carbon capture and storage (CCS). Herein, we report the preparation and performance of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) separation. The MMMs comprise amino-functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets (NUS-8-NH 2 ) dispersed in the polymer of intrinsic microporosity 1 (PIM-1). Specifically, the MOF nanosheets were synthesized through a bottom-up method and introduced into the PIM-1 matrix to fabricate NUS-8-NH 2 /PIM-1 MMMs. The uniformly dispersed MOF nanosheets could afford additional fast transport pathways through intra-flake pores and inter-flake nano-channels. Moreover, the amino groups could enhance CO 2 transport within NUS-8-NH 2 /PIM-1 MMMs. In addition, hydrogen bonding between the NUS-8-NH 2 filler and PIM-1 matrix improved interfacial compatibility. Therefore, the as-prepared MMMs could achieve a high filler loading of 15 wt% without sacrificing separation performance. Compared with the pure PIM-1 membrane, the MMM with 10 wt% NUS-8-NH 2 showed CO 2 permeability of ∼14000 Barrer and a CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of ∼30, surpassing the 2008 Robeson's upper bound.

Gold-nanoparticles-based lateral flow immunoassays (AuNPs-LFIAs) are widely used for point-of-care testing, yet their sensitivity remains fundamentally limited, likely because random antibody orientation on AuNP surfaces restricts Fab accessibility and antigen recognition efficiency. Precise control of antibody orientation is thus critical for maximizing probe activity, yet existing directional conjugation strategies are often multistep, technically complex, and poorly scalable. Here, we report an ultrafast biomimetic mineralization strategy that enables one-step, room-temperature self-assembly of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) with antibodies and dual-ligand AuNPs, producing uniform hybrid nanoprobes within 5 min. ZIF-8 shell preserves the plasmonic properties of AuNPs while simultaneously enhancing colloidal stability and optical signal intensity. Molecular dynamics simulations suggest a two-step orientation model: (i) rapid electrostatic attraction between negatively charged Fc regions and Zn2+ ions initiates nucleation, followed by (ii) Fc-associated interfacial interactions that promote preferential Fc-oriented binding and anisotropic Fc/Fab distribution, thereby enhancing Fab exposure for efficient antigen recognition. This controlled assembly increases Fab accessibility more than 3-fold relative to conventional adsorption or co-precipitation strategies, minimizes nonspecific adsorption, and amplifies signal output. When applied to competitive LFIAs, the oriented nanoprobes enabled ultrasensitive detection of chloramphenicol down to 13 pg/mL, corresponding to approximately 1 order of magnitude higher sensitivity than AuNPs-based LFIA gold standard. By integrating mechanistic insight with operational simplicity, this work establishes a generalizable platform for ultrafast, scalable, and antibody-orientation-controlled nanoprobe fabrication for next-generation LFIAs in food safety, clinical diagnostics, and environmental monitoring.

Composition-engineered Cu-doped ZIF-8 was designed for OA therapy. • Cu@ZIF-8 reduced oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation in chondrocytes. • Cu@ZIF-8 suppressed ferroptosis and preserved ECM homeostasis. • Intra-articular Cu@ZIF-8 attenuated OA progression in rats. Engineering metal–organic framework (MOF)-based materials with tunable composition and biological function offers a promising strategy for regulating pathological oxidative microenvironments. Herein, a composition-engineered copper-doped zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 nanoplatform, Cu@ZIF-8, was designed to modulate oxidative stress-associated lipid peroxidation and chondrocyte ferroptosis for osteoarthritis (OA) therapy. The incorporation of copper into the ZIF-8 framework enabled homogeneous elemental distribution while preserving the crystalline structure and high specific surface area of the MOF platform. In H 2 O 2 - and RSL3-induced chondrocyte injury models, Cu@ZIF-8 reduced intracellular ROS accumulation, alleviated lipid peroxidation, preserved mitochondrial membrane potential, restored GPX4/SLC7A11 expression, and maintained extracellular matrix homeostasis. Mechanistic studies suggested that Cu@ZIF-8-mediated ferroptosis suppression was associated, at least in part, with modulation of p38 MAPK/AKT signaling. In a surgically induced rat OA model, intra-articular administration of Cu@ZIF-8 attenuated cartilage degeneration, reduced oxidative and ferroptosis-related damage, and showed no apparent systemic toxicity under the tested conditions. This study establishes a composition-engineered MOF nanoplatform that links copper-doped ZIF-8 design with oxidative stress regulation, ferroptosis suppression, and cartilage protection, providing a materials-design strategy for OA microenvironment modulation. Traditional polyamide nanofiltration membranes are restricted by their permeance-selectivity trade-off and fouling intolerance, which collectively constrains efficient ionic separations. To address these, hydroxyl-rich core-shell ZIF-8 nanoparticles were synthesized via tannic acid-mediated coordination (TA/ZIF-8), achieving polyphenol-tailored structural regulation. Herein, the TA/ZIF-8 nanoparticles were engineered to regulate polyamide membranes fabrication via vacuum-assisted filtration by confining interfacial polymerization. Critically, enhanced hydrophilicity and dispersion were induced by TA-Zn 2+ coordination, while monomer diffusion was restricted by the hydrogen bonding between TA/ZIF-8 and piperazine. Consequently, ultrathin polyamide layers characterized by striped/nodular morphologies and elevated roughness were formed. Modulated by the TA/ZIF-8 interlayer, the crosslinking density was reduced, whereas the surface hydrophilicity and electronegativity were simultaneously augmented. As a result, an exceptional water permeance (31.8 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ) coupled with a high Na 2 SO 4 rejection (98.3%) and a superior Cl − /SO 4 2− selectivity (46.5) was achieved by the optimized membranes. Furthermore, the membranes demonstrated exceptional antifouling property, robust stability, and outperformed literature NF benchmarks. This work establishes TA/ZIF-8 interlayers as a scalable platform for transcending permeability-selectivity limits in antifouling desalination nanofiltration membranes.

Developing highly active, durable, and cost-effective oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts is crucial for fuel cell commercialization through the use of non-precious metal alternatives to platinum. In this study, the tunable dodecahedral Fe-N-C catalysts were synthesized through controlled pyrolysis of Fe-doped zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) precursors. The optimized 5% Fe@NC-8 catalyst demonstrates excellent ORR performance with an onset potential of 0.92 V vs. RHE, a half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.83 V vs. RHE, and a limiting diffusion current density (j d ) of 6.06 mA cm −2 , surpassing commercial 20% Pt/C catalysts (onset potential 0.89 V vs. RHE; E 1/2 0.81 V vs. RHE; j d 4.27 mA cm −2 ). It also shows strong durability, retaining 86.16% of its current after prolonged polarization (@0.80 V vs. RHE for 10,000 s) and minimal negative shift in half-wave potential after extensive cycling(@200 mV s −1 for 5000 CV cycles). The enhanced catalytic performance is attributed to (i) possessing a high specific surface area (319 m 2 g −1 ) and favorable porosity to maximize active site accessibility; (ii) having abundant active sites of Fe-N x , graphitic N, and pyridinic N as active catalytic centers; and (iii) forming N-doped carbon matrices to provide a conductive framework. These advantages boost the density of accessible active sites and thus remarkably improve the ORR catalytic activity.

In-situ ZIF-8 growth on polyester enables salt/auxiliary-free dyeing with weak acid dyes at room temperature, eliminating high-temperature high-pressure process. • ZIF-8 coating provides abundant active sites for efficient weak acid dye adsorption without salts or dispersants. • PDMS modification confers superhydrophobicity (153.6°), UV protection (UPF 59.58), and oil-water separation. • The composite fabric shows outstanding washing/abrasion resistance and maintains ∼100% separation efficiency after 20 cycles. Conventional polyester dyeing is energy-intensive, water-consuming, and reliant on salts and dispersants, while the finished fabrics lack multifunctionality. Here, we report a sustainable strategy that integrates clean dyeing with multifunctional finishing of polyester fabrics. This strategy is achieved via in-situ growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-8. Alkali pretreatment introduces hydroxyl and carboxyl groups on the fiber surface, which enables uniform ZIF-8 growth to construct a micro/nano-rough architecture with abundant active sites and positive surface charge. This architecture allows efficient adsorption dyeing with weak acid dyes at room temperature — completely eliminating salts, dispersants, and the conventional high-temperature high-pressure process. Subsequent PDMS modification imparts superhydrophobicity (water contact angle: 153.6°), UV protection (UPF: 59.58), and excellent oil–water separation efficiency (∼100% after 20 cycles), while the dyed fabric achieves a color depth (K/S) of 8.75 with good fastness. Notably, this one-step integration of dyeing and functionalization eliminates energy-intensive steps, reduces chemical usage, and enables room-temperature processing. This work offers a green, low-carbon pathway for multifunctional polyester textiles with promising applications in oily wastewater treatment. DNA methylation has emerged as a pivotal molecular biomarker for early cancer diagnosis. Nevertheless, existing detection strategies remain limited by complex workflows, poor efficiency in trace DNA capture, and the inability to resolve both absolute concentration and methylation ratio simultaneously. Herein, we engineer a tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) biosensor functionalized with Au@zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (Au@ZIF-8) core-shell nanoparticle arrays. This architecture overcomes the diffusion-limited capture of conventional biosensors through a powerful hydrodynamic−plasmonic synergy. First, hydrodynamic stagnation flow efficiently preconcentrates trace DNA molecules onto the sensing interface. Subsequently, plasmon-enhanced dielectrophoresis provides an active trapping force, precisely localizing these molecules onto sensing hotspots. To enable multiparametric methylation profiling, a dual-recognition strategy was developed by integrating sequence-specific DNA hybridization with 5-methylcytosine (5mC) antibody binding. This approach allows for rapid (<15 min), amplification-free quantification of both methylated DNA concentration and methylation ratio in complex biological samples, with an ultralow detection limit of 6.9 × 102 copies/μL. Clinical validation using patient-derived samples demonstrates excellent diagnostic accuracy, achieving a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) area under the curve (AUC) of 0.941 through multilocus methylation analysis. This study establishes a robust, amplification- and label-free biosensing platform that integrates microfluidic manipulation with plasmonic nanoengineering, offering a powerful strategy for high-throughput, clinically translatable DNA methylation analysis in early cancer detection.

In this study, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) was introduced as an additive to enable the hydrothermal synthesis of glucose-derived carbon spheres under challenging conditions: high glucose concentration (up to 4 M, representing the upper limit for sphere formation) and short reaction time (2 h). The effects of ZIF-8 dosage, hydrothermal time, glucose concentration and polyacrylic acid sodium (PAAS) on the morphology of carbon spheres were investigated in detail. Results show that ZIF-8 not only promotes the formation of uniform carbon spheres but also significantly increases the apparent yield—even at 4 M glucose. Notably, while carbon spheres can be formed at glucose concentrations as high as 4 M, the optimal electrochemical performance was achieved at 3 M glucose, under fixed hydrothermal volume of 40 mL with 0.1 g ZIF-8, 2 h reaction time, and 24 mg PAAS. After KOH activation (KOH: carbon = 1:1), the resulting material exhibited a high specific surface area (1617 m 2 /g), large pore volume (1.00 cm 3 /g), average pore size of 2.48 nm, and strong microporosity (94.9% contribution). It delivered a specific capacitance of 171.5 F/g at 0.5 A/g and retained 85.14% of its capacity after 10,000 cycles at 2 A/g. This work demonstrates that ZIF-8-assisted hydrothermal carbonization is an effective strategy to increase the apparent yield of carbon sphere, and provides a feasible pathway for expanding the application of glucose-derived hydrothermal carbon spheres.
