The Fenton-like application potential of MoS2 has recently attracted widespread interest in advanced oxidation processes. This study utilized natural molybdenite ore as the source of MoS2, and the Fenton-like reactivity of molybdenite was further enhanced by dropping Fe(III) ions on the basal planes of MoS2. EDS elemental analysis and XPS results suggest that Fe species were successfully anchored on the molybdenite surface, which exhibited exceptional efficiency in peracetic acid (PAA) activation. The Fe-molybdenite/PAA system achieved 83.2% degradation of sulfamethazine (SMT) within 30 min, and the reaction efficiency by Fe-molybdenite was 3.3 times higher than that of the unmodified molybdenite. HO• and Fe(V) were identified as the reactive species (RSs) during PAA activation, and SMT was degraded by these RSs. Increasing Fe-molybdenite and PAA dosages enhanced SMT degradation, with optimal performance observed at pH 4. Hydroxylation, nitrification, Smiles rearrangement and radical recombination reactions were involved during SMT degradation. Tetracyclines, dyes and other sulphonamide antibiotics could also be well degraded by Fe-molybdenite/PAA. This study elucidates fundamental design principles for engineering Fenton-like catalysts from natural mineral precursors.

Ultrathin strut Fe-based scaffolds have made significant progress in the field of vascular interventional devices, but the issues of slow degradation and insufficient biocompatibility at the cell/material interface remain unresolved. This study prepared a functionalized surface on Fe by Zn ion implantation (Zn/Fe). Zn/Fe preferentially releases the antioxidant element Zn in the early degradation due to Zn–Fe galvanic coupling corrosion. It facilitates the adhesion and proliferation of endothelial cells and mitigates the risk of oxidative stress. The degradation rate of Zn/Fe was about 1.6 times that of Fe after 56 days of implantation in the common carotid artery of rats, with a 36.1% reduction in lumen loss rate, demonstrating favorable in vivo biocompatibility. These findings provide valuable insights for the development of novel functionalized Fe-based scaffold medical devices.

The slow kinetics of the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) impose a major limitation on overall water electrolysis, creating a demand for highly active catalysts. Transition metal selenides (TMSs) offer favorable electrical conductivity, inexpensive constituents, and adjustable electronic configurations; however, their inherent catalytic activity is still insufficient. In this study, nanorod-like Fe/Co co-doped NiSe (Fe,Co-NiSe) was prepared by hydrothermally forming NiSe and subsequently introducing Fe and Co through a simple soaking treatment. The simultaneous incorporation of Fe and Co effectively tunes the electronic structure of NiSe. Raman measurements performed in situ show that introducing Fe/Co favors the generation of NiOOH-type oxyhydroxide species, thereby enhancing OER activity. 18O-labeling differential electrochemical mass spectrometry confirms that Fe,Co-NiSe follows the conventional adsorbate evolution mechanism. Density functional theory (DFT) analysis further indicates that Fe-induced electronic redistribution at Co sites raises the Co d-band position and reduces the Gibbs energy required for the kinetically limiting *O → *OOH conversion. Consequently, under alkaline conditions, Fe,Co-NiSe reaches 10 mA cm-2 at an overpotential of 229 mV and sustains 50 mA cm-2 for 300 h. When employed as the anodic electrode in an anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolyzer coupled with Pt/C, this electrolyzer delivers 1 A cm-2 while registering a cell voltage of 1.84 V.

Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent form of regulated cell death driven by excessive lipid peroxidation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation. Herein, we report a novel metal-coordinated nanoparticle system (OFe-NPs) fabricated via a one-pot self-assembly between orlistat and FeCl 3 ·6 H₂O for ferroptosis-based tumor therapy. The optimized OFe-NPs exhibited uniform nanoscale size and good colloidal stability under physiological conditions. In MCF-7 breast cancer cells, OFe-NPs showed significantly enhanced cytotoxicity compared with free orlistat, which was attributed to glutathione (GSH)-responsive disassembly and intracellular release of Fe ions and orlistat. Mechanistic investigations revealed that OFe-NPs effectively induced ferroptosis, as evidenced by increased lipid peroxidation, intracellular Fe 2+ accumulation, glutathione depletion, malondialdehyde elevation, and marked downregulation of GPX4. In an MCF-7 xenograft mouse model, OFe-NPs treatment significantly suppressed tumor growth, achieving a tumor inhibition rate of 76.76% with no evident systemic toxicity. These findings demonstrate that metal-coordinated orlistat–Fe(III) nanoparticles synergistically amplify ferroptosis via simultaneous iron-mediated oxidative stress and GPX4 suppression, offering a promising strategy for cancer therapy.

Developing efficient and stable electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is critical for advancing clean and sustainable energy technologies. Herein, a Fe-doped perovskite oxide Ba0.7Pr0.3Co0.8Fe0.2O3−δ(BPCF0.2) was successfully synthesized via the sol–gel method. By regulating the stoichiometric ratio of precursors and calcination temperature, a stable single-phase perovskite structure was achieved. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that Fe incorporation increased the proportion of high-valent Co species and lattice oxygen content, which respectively reduced the charge transfer resistance of BPCF0.2, thereby significantly enhancing catalytic performance. Electrochemical measurements revealed that BPCF0.2exhibited remarkable HER activity in 1.0 M KOH, achieving an overpotential of 172 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, with no significant decay during 200 h of continuous HER testing at 100 mA cm−2. These results demonstrate that the Fe doping strategy can effectively optimize the electronic structure, providing valuable insights for the development of perovskite-based HER catalysts.

Securing reliable supplies of rare-earth elements (REEs) increasingly depends on efficient recycling, as primary production remains geopolitically concentrated while demand from advanced technologies continues to grow. However, recycling of NdFeB waste continues to rely on conventional hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processes, which are waste generating due to the intrinsic challenge of separating REEs from iron-rich phases. Here, we demonstrate a ZnCl 2 -assisted chlorination strategy that selectively converts Nd into an acid-soluble NdOCl, while stabilizing Fe as insoluble oxides (ZnFe 2 O 4 and Fe 2 O 3 ), thereby suppressing co-dissolution and facilitating efficient REEs−Fe separation. Thermodynamic analysis identifies atmosphere and temperature as critical parameters governing phase evolution. Experimental validation confirms that, under optimized conditions (air, 700 °C), REEs recoveries reach 99.31% (Nd), 93.85% (Dy), and 98.82% (Pr), while Fe dissolution is limited to 2.30%. In contrast, inert atmospheres promote Fe dissolution, and temperatures ≥800 °C induce NdFeO 3 formation, both of which compromise selective recovery. Kinetic analysis further reveals a nucleation-and-growth controlled mechanism consistent with the Avrami–Erofeev model. This route thus offers a streamlined and reagent-efficient process for REEs recovery from waste NdFeB, offering a scalable route toward closing the REEs supply loop.

The advancement of high-performance iron-based single-atom catalysts (Fe-SACs) for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) presents great promise for sustainable electrochemical energy technologies. However, the precise regulation of the spin state of the Fe center, a critical factor governing catalytic activity, remains a fundamental challenge. Here, we synthesize a sulfur-doped Fe-SAC with an asymmetric Fe–N3S1 coordination structure, which effectively modulates the local electronic environment compared with the conventional Fe–N4 configuration. Using synchrotron-based X-ray and infrared spectroscopy, we reveal that sulfur incorporation optimizes the electron occupancy of Fe 3d orbitals, including a favorable transition of the Fe spin state from low-spin to high-spin. This engineered electronic structure enhances the adsorption and activation of oxygen intermediates, substantially accelerating the kinetics of the rate-determining *OOH formation and conversion steps. Thus, the catalyst displays superior ORR performance, achieving an excellent catalytic efficiency characterized by a high half-wave potential of 0.904 V. This work provides a robust pathway for designing advanced electrocatalysts.

GO is electrostatically assembled on Fe-pillared bentonite at mild conditions. • The optimized GO/PB electrode delivers a desalination capacity of 41.11 mg g −1 in 10 mM NaCl. • A balanced GO loading improves conductivity without blocking ion-accessible pores. • The electrode retains 91.12% capacity after 100 CDI cycles. • Real groundwater desalination achieves >85% removal for major ions. Bentonite is an abundant layered clay mineral with intrinsic negative charge and ion-exchange capability, but its direct use as a capacitive deionization (CDI) electrode is restricted by poor electrical conductivity. In this work, graphene oxide-encapsulated Fe-pillared bentonite (GO/PB) composites were prepared through a mild electrostatic self-assembly strategy. Fe pillaring enlarged the interlayer space and exposed ion-accessible surfaces, while cationic surfactant-assisted assembly enabled negatively charged GO sheets to uniformly anchor onto the pillared bentonite surface. The resulting composite integrated the structural stability and cation-affinity of pillared bentonite with a uniformly assembled GO-PB interface, providing more efficient charge transfer and desalination than the physically mixed counterpart. The optimized GO/PB-0.2 with 14.6% GO delivered a salt adsorption capacity of 41.11 mg g −1 in 10 mmol L −1 NaCl and achieved 59.77 mg g −1 in 50 mmol L −1 NaCl. The capacity still maintained 91.12% after 100 continuous cycles, with no obvious change in the crystalline structure. Desalination tests using actual groundwater further showed simultaneous removal of multiple ions with removal efficiencies above 85%. This work demonstrates that charge-directed interfacial assembly provides an effective strategy for improving the electrical accessibility and utilization of pillared-clay ion-storage domains, offering a mild route for developing low-cost and stable CDI electrodes for brackish-water treatment. The development of efficient catalysts to regulate the thermal decomposition and combustion behavior of ammonium perchlorate (AP) is essential for improving the energy output of solid propellants. In this study, a LaFe0.5Co0.5O3/Ni–Fe Prussian Blue Analogue (PBA) composite was designed to synergistically enhance the decomposition kinetics and combustion performance of AP. The composite integrates perovskite-type oxides with a conductive PBA framework, forming a bifunctional electronic–geometric catalytic interface. Systematic characterization revealed that the optimized Ni–Fe PBA effectively balanced oxygen vacancy generation, Fe2+/Fe3+ redox cycling, and a multistage pore structure. This led to a 106.9 °C reduction in AP’s thermal decomposition temperature and a 56.2% decrease in activation energy. Combustion tests demonstrated a 48.1% increase in burning rate, a 35.0% increase in flame area, and a 45.8% increase in luminescence intensity, which may be attributed to improved charge transfer and gas diffusion facilitated by interfacial synergy between the two components. This work offers a strategy for designing high-performance catalysts via interfacial engineering, with promising potential for broad applications in fuel energy modulation.

The rational design of locally coordinated environments for active centers and the optimization of binding energies with oxygen-containing intermediates are effective strategies for enhancing the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity of Fe-based catalysts. In this study, we report lignin-derived, highly metal-loaded composite catalysts comprising single-atom Fe and nanoclusters (Fe SA + NC -N-C). These catalysts exhibit significantly improved ORR activity, achieving an onset potential of 1.039 V in an alkaline environment. When applied in a zinc-air battery, the Fe SA + NC -N-C catalysts deliver a remarkable power density of 175.3 mW cm −2 . Theoretical calculations reveal that the small-sized nanoclusters induce a negative shift in the d-band center of Fe, lowering the OH∗ dissociation barrier and thereby enhancing ORR performance. Furthermore, the abundant mesoporous structure of catalyst ensures comprehensive exposure of catalytic sites, with an active site density of FeN 4 for Fe SA + NC -N-C reaching 3.38 × 10 19 sites g −1 . This work demonstrates a scalable approach to improving the ORR activity of Fe-based catalysts by coupling single-atom Fe with nanoclusters on mesoporous carriers, offering a promising pathway to balance catalytic performance and cost-effectiveness.

To address the prevailing issue of arsenic contamination in water bodies, a novel composite microsphere (Fe-CB) was developed for the effective removal of As(V) ions from aqueous solutions. This microsphere was prepared using a sol–gel-titration-freeze-drying method, with chitosan and ferric chloride as raw materials, polyethyleneimine as a modifier and glutaraldehyde as a cross-linking agent. The effects of pH, adsorbent dosage, initial heavy metal concentration, and contact time on the performance of the adsorbent were investigated by a series of adsorption experiments. It was showed that pH played a significant role in determining the adsorption efficiency, while temperature had a relatively minor influence. The adsorption isothermal of As(V) on Fe-CB was best described by Langmuir isotherm model, whereas the dynamic adsorption process fitted the pseudo-second-order or secondary kinetic model well. Notably, the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity was 80.97 mg/g. Furthermore, regeneration experiments demonstrated that Fe-CB maintained a regeneration rate of over 85% even after five cycles, highlighting its excellent recyclability. This study underscores the potential of Fe-CB as an efficient and reusable adsorbent for the removal of As(V) ions from contaminated waters.

The key to developing sensors for chiral drug determination is to exclude interference from enantiomers. In this study, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) were introduced to prepare a chiral sensor for levofloxacin detection. The MIP was electropolymerised on the surface of the Cu/Fe-benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate MOF (Cu/Fe-BTC)-modified Au electrode using levofloxacin as a template molecule. After eluting the levofloxacin, a chiral sensor with recognition sites for levofloxacin was obtained. With this site as a switch, a novel method for detecting levofloxacin was established. Because of the enhanced recognition effect, the sensor can effectively exclude the enantiomeric interference of d-ofloxacin. Moreover, Cu/Fe-BTC can effectively amplify the current response signal and improve the sensitivity of the sensor. The linear range of the sensor was 5 to 4000 × 10 −11 mol L −1 , and the detection limit was 2.07 × 10 −11 mol L −1 . When applied to detecting levofloxacin in actual samples, the sensor showed a 92.7–109.8% recovery. Graphical
