The high dielectric constant of PVDF is very important for its high-performance energy storage dielectrics, but it is more critical to strike a proper balance between high dielectric constant and low dielectric loss. In this work, deep eutectic solvent (DES) and montmorillonite (MMT) have been used together to prepare γ-phase PVDF composite films with excellent dielectric properties. It is found that DES significantly induces crystallization of γ-phase and increases the dielectric constant of the composite due to the incremental ion motion. Meanwhile, DES greatly promotes the stripping and dispersion of MMT layers, which in turn inhibits the long-range ion migration and therefore suppresses the dielectric loss of the composite to a very low level. The dielectric constant of PVDF/MMT/DES composite films can increase to 32, while the dielectric loss remains as low as 0.06 at 1 kHz. Moreover, the synergistic effect of MMT/DES also contributes to enhancing the toughness and optical transmittance of composite films.

Functional membranes with electrothermal/photothermal effects are considered an effective method for separating water/viscous crude oil mixtures. However, the loading of photothermal and electrothermal particles in polymeric membranes with poor compatibility will deteriorate the membrane performance, leading to the unstable photothermal/electrothermal effects. Therefore, we prepared a hydrophobic sandwich structure polyvinylidene fluoride/reduced graphene oxide/polydimethylsiloxane (PVDF/rGO/PDMS) composite membrane using a two-step electrospinning process, which improved the binding force between the photothermal/electrothermal particles and the matrix with the composite membrane exhibiting super fast electric heating and photothermal effect. The temperature of the composite membrane surface rapidly reached to 162.5 °C within 30 s at 25 V. In addition, the addition of graphene (GO) improved the mechanical properties of the composite membrane. Meantime, the composite membrane possessed stable hydrophobicity and lipophilicity, which was beneficial for separating water/viscous crude oil mixtures. Owing to the controllable pore structure and special wetting behavior, the water-in-oil emulsion was successfully separated. Importantly, the separation rates of the water/crude oil mixtures under the electrothermal effect was 2340 kg·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 . Thus, this study provides a new method for preparing hydrophobic sandwich-like PVDF/rGO/PDMS composite membrane with electrothermal/photothermal effects, which has significant potential for engineering applications in high-viscosity crude oil removal and water-in-oil emulsion separation.

The high-performance piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG) with good flexibility, tunability and sensitivity is desirable for the next-generation of wearable electronics . However, the 3D printing of unique architectures and arbitrary shapes could endow the conformal electronic sensors with excellent flexibility and functionality. In this work, the self-poled PENG were successfully fabricated by incorporating the oriented ionic salt-montmorillonite (IS-MMT) co-fillers into poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix and then performing 3D printing . This hence could give the 3D printed PENG the locked interfacial piezoelectric polarization. More importantly, the self-adaptive conformal PENG based on auxetic metamaterial has also been developed, which is beyond the practicability of the traditional 2D PENG. The effect of various architectures of the metamaterial on the mechanical and piezoelectric responses was particularly discussed. The tailoring of the 3D printed cell with metamaterial of serpentine geometries shows the appealing advantages of high sensitivity to structure variation, thus being beneficial for easier regulation of piezoelectric output. When mounted on the joints as a wearable healthcare monitoring device, this 3D printed PENG could accurately detect the movement of muscles, demonstrating its potential in motion tracking and sign-language interpretation. Obviously, this work could provide a new idea for design and fabrication of programmable wearable electronics.

In this study, the removal efficiency of chemicals of emerging concerns (CECs) was evaluated under exposure to various doses of UV/H 2 O 2 -based oxidation processes in combination with membrane filtration for three cleaning cycles. Polyethersulphone (PES) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) materials based membranes were used for this study. The chemical cleaning of the membranes was performed by immersion of the membranes into 1 N HCl followed by adding 3000 mg.L −1 NaOCl for 1hr. Degradation and filtration performance was evaluated using Liquid Chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and total organic carbon (TOC) analysis. Membrane fouling analysis for assessing the comparative performance of PES and PVDF membranes was determined by specific fouling and fouling indices evaluation. Membrane characterization results show that the alkynes and carbonyl group formation are due to dehydrofluorination and oxidation of PVDF and PES membranes under the attack of foulants and cleaning chemicals, which resulted in a reduction of fluoride percentage and an increase in sulfur percentage in the PVDF and PES membranes. A decrease in the hydrophilicity of the membranes in underexposed conditions was observed and is consistent with an increase in dose. Degradation results of CECs follow with the highest removal efficiency of chlortetracycline (CTC) followed by atenolol (ATL), acetaminophen (ACT), and caffeine (CAF) degradation due to attack on the aromatic ring and the carbonyl group of CECs by OH exposure. Membrane exposed at 3 mg.L-1 dose of UV/H 2 O 2 -based CECs shows minimum alteration with higher filtration efficiency and lower fouling, particularly in PES membranes.

Polymer electrolytes are being considered as an effective solution for electrochemical devices to replace currently used organic liquid electrolytes due to their excellent mechanical properties and security. Herein, we prepared stretchable polymer electrolytes (SPEs) doped with poly[(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid)- co -poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate] (P(AMPS- co -PEGMA)) and enhanced with poly[(vinylidene fluoride)- co -hexafluoropropylene] (PVDF-HFP), through UV in situ polymerization. The SPEs showed good mechanical performance with an elongation of more than 40% and ionic conductivity reaching the order of 10 −3 S cm −1 . In terms of application, flexible electrochromic devices based on the UV in situ -prepared SPEs were assembled, the color switching performance being still good even after 400 switching cycles and 1000 bending cycles, which indicated that the SPEs could have excellent prospects in application for flexible devices. © 2023 Society of Industrial Chemistry.

Polymer-based dielectric composites with simultaneously improved dielectric constant and breakdown strength have great potential applications in energy storage. In this paper, polyaniline@BaTiO 3 (PANI@BT) nanoparticles with core-shell structure are first fabricated by in-situ chemical oxidative polymerization, and deposited on the surface of two-dimensional nanoplatelets (graphene oxide [GO] and hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets [BNNS]), which are then utilized to prepare poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based composites. The presence of 2D nanoplatelets is found to significantly ameliorate the dispersion of PANI@BT particles in the PVDF matrix, and thus endowing the resultant PVDF composites with improved comprehensive performance. The dielectric constant of PANI@BT-GO/PVDF and PANI@BT-BNNS/PVDF composites with 50 wt% fillers increase to 124.9 and 169.5 at 100 Hz, accompanied with relatively low dielectric loss. When the filler content is 10 wt%, the breakdown strength of PANI@BT-BNNS/PVDF achieves 133.5 kV/mm, which is 9.7% and 71.8% higher than that of the pristine PVDF and PANI@BT/PVDF composites. Meanwhile, the tensile stress also reaches the highest value of 43.38 MPa. In addition, the PANI@BT-GO/PVDF and PANI@BT-BNNS/PVDF composites present higher thermal decomposition temperature in comparison with PANI@BT/PVDF composites.

A large pore size Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane was prepared by the V-NIPS method using PVDF/N, N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc)/Polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP)/Polyethylene glycol (PEG) system. Firstly, the effect of different additive ratios on the membrane morphology and pore size was studied, and it was found that when the PVP:PEG ratio was 8:2, PVDF membranes with a relatively large pore size tend to be formed; the pore size is about 7.5 µm. Then, the effects of different exposure time on the membrane morphology and pore size were investigated, and it was found that as the vapor temperature increased, the pores on the surface of the membrane first became slightly smaller and then increased. Finally, the effects of different vapor temperatures on the membrane properties were discussed. The results showed that the as-prepared membrane exhibited suitable capillary flow rate and similar performance compared with a commercially available membrane in colloidal gold tests. The likely cause is that the amount of negative charge is less and the capillary migration rate is too fast. This paper provides a reference for the preparation of PVDF colloidal gold detection membrane. Keywords:Poly(vinylidene fluoride);vapor non-solvent-induced phase separation;detection of colloidal gold;capillary flow rate

The direct discharge of oily wastewater into the environment is considered one of the greatest threats to the ecological environment. Membrane technology is considered as an efficient strategy to treat oily wastewater. However, the membrane fouling caused by oil adsorption has intensively impeded its practical utilization in oil/water separation. This work aims to fabricate an anti-oil-fouling membrane for the effective separation of oil/water emulsions. The PEGylated poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane was synthesized via thiol–ene photochemistry with poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) and 3,6-dioxa-1,8-octanedithiol (DOT) as the modifiers. The results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) mapping analysis revealed that the PEGylated layers show uniform distribution on the membrane surface by regulating the feed PEGDA concentration. The superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic characteristics of the PEGylated membrane provided oil-adhesion resistance to the membranes. The membrane grafted with a high amount of PEGylated layers shows a low pure water flux, due to the pore blockage. The PEGylated membrane possesses the stable surface wettability and permeation performance of emulsion. The separation efficiency of PEGylated membranes for multiple emulsions is greater than 99%, and the highest rejection value is as high as 99.9%. After the three-cycle filtration of emulsified pump oil solution, the flux recovery ratio of membranes still reaches 90%, indicating an outstanding fouling resistance to emulsified oily matters. This work provides a feasible strategy to prepare the antifouling PVDF membrane used for the oil/water separation.

Membrane separation is one of the most effective ways to remove organic dyes in wastewater. Rationally regulating the pore size of separation membranes would contribute to great performance. However, membranes with a uniform pore structure make it difficult to simultaneously realize high flux and excellent rejection ratio. Herein, functional composite nanoporous fiber membrane material with visible-light-driven self-cleaning performance was constructed by spinning hypercrosslinked polystyrene nanoparticles (HCPNPs) and TiO 2 -based catalysts into the electrospun membrane of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The composited fiber membrane with a hierarchical pore structure exhibits unique performances: excellent adsorption capacity for organic dyes, reaching 12 mg·g −1 (methylene blue), respectively, extraordinary high photocatalytic degradation rate (up to 99%) and gorgeous cycle degradation performance for MB (degradation rate is maintained at 95% after five cycles), and excellent comprehensive performance for the removal of extensive pollutant library including organic dye, and antibiotic pollutant. Therefore, coupled with facile and economical synthesis, we provide a novel idea for advanced membrane construction, which has the potential to be widely used for organic pollutants’ removal in sewage treatment. In this paper, we combine electrospinning with laminar flow theory to verify the influence of the spinning needle length on the internal structure of PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) nanofibers. The long spinning needle is referred as a reference like long ducts in the body of spiders. We also discussed the effect of different needle length on the micro-morphology, mechanical properties, electrical properties, porosity, and hydrophobic properties of PVDF nanofiber membranes. The results showed that when the needle length increased, more PVDF macromolecular chains will have sufficient time to be straightened and aligned, resulting in an increasingly ordered internal structure of the prepared PVDF nanofibers. The different length of the long needle has a certain influence on the morphology, mechanical properties, electrical properties, porosity, and hydrophobic properties of PVDF nanofiber membrane obtained by electrospinning. The more ordered the internal structure of nanofibers, the worse the membrane’s mechanical properties, but the lower its electrical resistivity.

Safety concerns such as lithium dendrite growth, leakage and volatilization regularly plague conventional liquid lithium metal batteries. However, solid polymer electrolytes can mitigate these issues due to their chemical and electrochemical stability. In this paper, we show that the construction of porous structures gives PVDF-HFP based polymers excellent solution retention, quick Li + transport channels, and ultra-long Li-symmetric cycle stability. PVDF-HFP based electrolyte membrane with porous structure exhibits excellent electrolyte retention (129.5 %) and superior ionic conductivity (2.4 × 10 -3 S cm −1 at 20 ℃). In addition, Lithium-symmetric half battery uses the DPH250 porous electrolyte film to stably last more than 2000 h during the lithium plating/stripping process. DI regulation of PVDF-HFP electrolyte membrane is beneficial to achieve uniform lithium deposition, and better solve the interface problems existing in solid state batteries. LiFePO 4 /DPH250-LiPF 6 /Li batteries exhibit stable cycling performance and reversible specific discharge capacity, suggesting a potential strategy for stabilizing lithium metal batteries.

Membrane fouling remains a major challenge during oily wastewater purification, resulting in reduced water flux and separation efficiency. Zwitterionic polymers have been introduced to the PVDF membrane and shown their fouling resistance ability. However, most current zwitterions lack bactericidal effects and tend to be fouled by the attachment of bacteria and biofilm formation in long-term service. Herein, a synthetic zwitterionic poly(imidazolium), poly(ZIM-co-VTS), was introduced onto the PVDF membrane by co-assembly with polydopamine (PDA) and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as a silica source. The in situ covalent bond can be formed between the catechol from PDA and silanol groups from both TEOS and imidazole-based polymers. Further, Fe3+ cross-linking contributes to the robust chemical stability of modified PVDF. The as-prepared coating exhibits superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity under harsh conditions (pH = 1 and 13), remaining high separation efficiency (>99%) toward various surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions without an apparent water flux (>1013 L m–2 h–1 bar–1) decline. More importantly, the cationic imidazolium in poly(ZIM-co-VTS) endues the excellent bacterial killing efficiency toward Staphylococcus aureus (4.5 log10 reduction) and Escherichia coli (4.7 log10 reduction). The zwitterionic poly(imidazolium)-modified PVDF exhibited long-term durability with anti-biofouling properties and was a promising candidate for practical oily wastewater remediation.
