Aims To investigate the effect of 7- O -geranylquercetin (GQ), a derivative of quercetin (Q), on reversing drug resistance in breast cancer MCF-7/ADR cells and reveal the mechanisms related to P-glycoprotein (P-gp). Main methods Cell viability was determined by MTT assay. Accumulation of adriamycin (ADR) in cells was determined by confocal fluorescence microscope and microplate reader while that of rhodamine (Rh) was measured by flow cytometry. Expression levels of P-gp and MDR1 gene in cells were detected by western blot and Real-Time PCR, respectively. Molecular docking of GQ and Q with P-gp was conducted using AutoDock program. Xenograft model was established by inoculating MCF-7/ADR cells in BALB/c-nude mice. Tumor bearing mice were administered with ADR via tail vein injection and/or GQ (Q) by gavage. Expression levels of P-gp in tissues were detected by western blot and immunohistochemistry. Key findings GQ could reverse drug resistance of MCF-7/ADR cells to ADR. GQ inhibited the efflux of ADR by down-regulating the expression of P-gp protein and its encoding gene MDR1 in MCF-7/ADR cells. Molecular modeling showed that GQ matched with P-gp better than Q. GQ enhanced the antitumor effects of ADR and decreased the expression of P-gp in mice and its activities were higher than that of Q. GQ could reverse drug resistance of MCF-7/ADR cells by down-regulating the expression of P-gp in vitro and in vivo. Significances The reversal effect of GQ on P-gp-mediated drug resistance indicates its potential as a reversal agent for drug resistance in cancer chemotherapy.

Activation of integrins is crucial for recruitment of flowing leukocytes to inflammatory or injured vascular sites, but their spatiotemporal characteristics are incompletely understood. We discovered that β2-integrin activation over the entire surface of neutrophils on immobilized P-selectin occurred via mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) or non-MAPK signaling with a minute-level timescale in a force-dependent manner. In flow, MAPK signaling required intracellular Ca2+ release to activate integrin within 2 min. Integrin activation via non-MAPK signaling occurred first locally in the vicinity of ligated P-selectin glycoprotein ligand-1 (PSGL-1) within sub-seconds, and then over the entire cell surface within 1 min in an extracellular Ca2+ influx-dependent manner. The transition from a local (but rapid) to global (but slow) activation mode was triggered by ligating the freshly activated integrin. Lipid rafts, moesin, actin, and talin were involved in non-MAPK signaling. Fluid loads had a slight effect on local integrin activation with a second-level timescale, but served as enhancers of global integrin activation.

Biomass-derived activated carbon is a widely used electrode material for supercapacitors. One of the keys to preparing high-performance activated carbon is the selection of appropriate precursors. Daylily is a common edible herb and is widely planted in Asia. It is rich in nitrogen and phosphorus, so it can be used as a precursor of heteroatom-doped activated carbon. Herein, a daylily-derived porous carbon with a large specific surface area and high content of heteroatoms has been successfully prepared by a simple carbonization method. The as-prepared carbon materials showed a remarkable specific capacitance of 299.1 F/g at 0.5 A/g and excellent cycling stability of 99.6% after 4000 cycles at a current density of 1 A/g. Moreover, the assembled symmetric supercapacitor showed a high energy density of 21.6 Wh/kg at a power density of 598.2 W/kg in 6 M KOH electrolyte. These results demonstrate that the daylily-derived porous carbon is an excellent material for high-performance supercapacitors.

Nacre, exhibiting excellent mechanical strengths due to its hierarchical structures, becomes a potential model to design bone implants. Herein, we firstly fabricated nacre-mimetic hydroxyapatite/chitosan/gelatin (HA/CS/Gel) layered scaffolds and incorporated substance P (SP) peptides. The CS scaffolds with a layered architecture could regulate the deposition of HA nanoplates on the interlamellar CS sheets by using CaCO 3 as precursors. The HA/CS/Gel layered scaffolds exhibited a great flexure strength of 11.42 MPa due to a brick-and-mortar structure. The biocompatible components, layered macropores and SP peptides in the HA/CS/Gel therapeutic scaffolds facilitated the spreading and proliferation mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Notably, the incorporation of SP peptides induced MSC osteogenic differentiation and extracellular matrix mineralization . Rabbit knee subchondral defect models further proved that the HA/CS/Gel-SP layered scaffolds promoted in vivo subchondral bone regeneration . Hence, the combination of nacre-mimetic bone implants and therapeutic drugs may become an attractive strategy for subchondral bone regeneration.

Coreopsis S/P-CDs from a CL sensor. • CL sensor detects Sudan III with 1.0 μM LOD. • Recoveries of 97.4% to 105.0% in real samples. A novel chemiluminescence sensor for Sudan III detection was developed using sulfur/phosphorus-doped carbon dots (S/P-CDs) synthesized from Coreopsis. Combined TEM, XPS, and FTIR analyses verified that the S/P-CDs exhibit uniform spherical morphology with well-resolved lattice fringes, successful S and P doping at atomic percentages of 3.6% and 1.7%, respectively, and abundant surface functionalities (including PO 4 3− and C O groups) that confer excellent water dispersibility and chemical reactivity. The S/P-CDs significantly enhanced the CL intensity of the acidic KMnO 4 -HCHO system. Under optimal conditions, the CL intensity was linearly correlated with the Sudan III concentration over the range of 5-100 μM, achieving a detection limit of 1.0 μM. The method was successfully applied to real samples, with recoveries of 97.4% to 105.0%, enabling rapid, convenient detection in food. In this work, bagasse derived nitrogen-doped activated carbon (B-dNAC) was prepared using waste sugarcane as a carbon precursor via a KOH-urea activated method. Then, gold nanoparticles were successfully loaded onto the B-dNAC and gold nanoparticles/B-dNAC nanocomposites (AuNPs/B-dNACNs) were obtained through the incorporation of chloroauric acid by a facile thermal reduction process. The structural composition and the morphology of the composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). A AuNPs/B-dNACNs modified glassy carbon electrode (AuNPs/B-dNACNs/GCE) was constructed. The electrochemical behavior of 4-aminophenol (4-AP) on the AuNPs/B-dNACNs/GCE was investigated by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The AuNPs/B-dNACNs/GCE exhibited good electrocatalytic performance for the electrooxidation of 4-AP and can be used as a novel electrochemical sensor for the detection of 4-AP. Under optimal conditions, the linear range of 4-AP was 1–400 μM, with a low detection limit of 0.61 μM. In addition, it displayed good selectivity, reproducibility and stability. Most importantly, the AuNPs/B-dNACNs/GCE could be used for the determination of 4-AP in acetaminophen tablets, and good recovery was obtained in the range of 97.1%–104.9%.

Photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen evolution is viewed as a promising strategy to address the energy and environmental issues. In this study, a series of NiO/Zn 3 In 2 S 6 (NiO/ZIS 6 ) p-n heterojunction photocatalysts have been prepared by the facile ultrasonic assisted deposition method. The as-obtained samples were systematically characterized employing various testing techniques. The photocatalytic performance of the p-n photocatalysts were evaluated by photocatalytic hydrogen production and the effect of different mass ratios of NiO to ZIS 6 on photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance was also explored. The results indicated that the 25% NiO/ZIS 6 sample demonstrates optimal photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity with a hydrogen evoluton rate of 21.79 mmol g −1 h −1 , which is 7.65 times higher than that of ZIS 6 . The mechanism exploration proves that the formation of NiO/ZIS 6 p-n heterojunction effectively promotes the separation and migration of photoinduced electrons and holes. Meanwhile, the recombination of charge carriers was restrained observably. This work may shed light on the design and preparation of novel p-n heterojunction photocatalysts with efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance and high stability.

Self-assembled monolayer (SAM) treatment of gate dielectrics plays a key role in the improvement of the electrical performance of organic thin-film transistors (TFTs) by reducing the interface traps. However, it is rarely explored in inorganic TFTs owing to possible irreversible damage to very thin SAMs during the sputtering and high-temperature annealing processes that are often used to deposit inorganic materials. Here, the feasibility of performance enhancement of inorganic p-type Zn-doped CuI TFTs is explored by a SAM treatment using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) on the gate dielectric. Our result shows that the TFT performance is significantly enhanced with a 50% reduction in the interface trap density, a 326% increase in the hole mobility from 0.38 to 1.24 cm 2 V -1 s -1 and a 5-fold increase in the current on/off ratio from 2.6 × 10 6 to 1.1 × 10 7 . In addition, the bias stress stability of the TFTs after the treatment is dramatically enhanced by a factor of 10 due to the improved interface properties. The threshold voltage shift is reduced from +19.6 to +1.8 V after 3600 s positive bias stress. The simple yet effective interface treatment approach may have great potential in the fabrication of high-performance inorganic p-type electronic devices.

As an emerging micro-pollutant, p -arsanilic acid ( p -ASA) exist widely in the environment, and it can form highly toxic arsenate and arsenite during the migration and transformation process, which greatly increases the risk of arsenic pollution in the ecosystem. Additionally, three-dimensional (3D) porous block materials have the advantage of stronger adsorption performance, faster adsorption rate and easy recovery, showing broad application prospects in water pollution control . Hence, the aminozed collagen fibers foam (ACFF) with 3D porous block structure was synthesized. The maximum adsorption capacity of ACFF for p -ASA was 476.19 mg·g −1 due to the rich honeycomb porous structure and the synergistic effect of electrostatic attraction , hydrogen bonding effect and amphiphilicity. Moreover, ACFF is not only easy to recycle, but also has good elastic recovery and regeneration performance. The pore size of ACFF was concentrated in the range of 25–5000 nm, and the porosity was 71.66%. ACFF may be an adsorbent with great potential for the removal of organoarsenic contaminants in water.

Using planar π-conjugated 2,5-diamino-1,4-benzenedithiol as organic ligand, Co-based conjugated coordination polymers (CoCCPs) with different morphology were prepared through controlling the injection rate of Co 2+ . When the injection rate decreases from 1.00 to 0.25 mL min −1 , the obtained CoCCPs change from 2D nanosheets to quasi-1D nanorods . It is found that the different-shaped CoCCPs exhibit varying electrochemical sensing performance. The prepared CoCCPs-1 with quasi-1D nanowires and porous network structure possesses larger active area, faster electron transfer and higher accumulation ability. Moreover, the CoCCPs-1 is more active for the oxidation of p -nitrophenol (PNP), and greatly enhances its oxidation signal. Based on the morphology-tuned sensing performance of CoCCPs, a highly-sensitive electrochemical sensor has been developed for PNP, with detection limit of 0.00986 μM (9.86 nM). It was used in the analysis of wastewater samples, and the results is validated by other instrumental method.

The flexibility of high energy polymers is hindered by bulky and polar high energy groups, resulting in reduced mechanical properties. In this paper, poly(3-azidomethyl-3-methyloxetane-glycol) (P(AMMO-ab-EG)) with an alternating block structure was synthesized and characterized. Diethylene glycol and triethylene glycol are used to improve flexibility, which length in this polymer structure is tightly controlled. (P(AMMO-ab-EG)) exhibits good flexibility, suitable viscosity and good thermal stability. It was found that P(AMMO-ab-DEG) exhibited a lower glass transition temperature but higher viscosity and better temperature viscosity sensitivity than P(AMMO-ab-TEG). These results demonstrate that fine tuning of the block length has a greater effect on T g than on viscosity. This finding is of great significance to prepare energetic polymers with good processing properties and lower T g value. Al, the prepared (P(AMMO-ab-EG) has excellent compatibility with NG (nitroglycerine) and NP (bis(2,2-dinitropropyl)acetal and bis(2,2- dinitropropyl)formal).

(R)-1-(4-methoxyphenyl) ethanol [(R)-1b] is an essential precursor for the synthesis of aryl propanoic acids’ anti-inflammatatory drugs. Biocatalysts for (R)-1b preparation are limited and reductase has problems of low substrate concentration and low conversion rate. As a result, there is a constant need for discovering novel biocatalysts with excellent catalytic performances. In this study, a novel reductase LpSDR from Lacisediminihabitans profunda for the biocatalytic reduction of p-methoxyacetophenone (1a) to (R)-1b was obtained based on gene-mining technology, and some key reaction parameters were also investigated to improve the conversion rate of 1a using whole cells of recombinant Escherichia coli expressing reductase LpSDR as biocatalysts. It was found that the optimal concentration of isopropanol, ZnSO4·7H2O solution, 1a, and recombinant E. coli resting cells, the optimal reaction temperature, buffer pH, and reaction time were 1.95 mol l−1, 0.75 mmol l−1, 75 mmol l−1, 250 g (wet weight) l−1, 28°C, 7.0, and 21 h, respectively. Under the above conditions, a conversion rate of 99.5% and an enantiomeric excess of 99.6% were obtained, which were superior to the corresponding values previously reported. This study provides a novel reductase LpSDR, which is helpful in reducing 1a to (R)-1b.
