A promising lead-containing waste recycling method, with sulfur conservation and reductive sulfur-fixing co-smelting process (RSFCS), is proposed. This work investigated the PbSO 4 reduction equilibrium composition, phase conversions, and microscopic transformation mechanisms during the RSFCS process at different temperatures, times, and CO-CO 2 mixtures using thermodynamic modeling, thermogravimetric analysis, x-ray diffraction, and SEM-EDS analysis techniques. At the same time, the gaseous products were collected and analyzed. The results showed that three reduction paths existed: (1) PbSO 4 \( \to ^{{ {\text{CO/CO}}_{{2}} }} \) PbO·PbSO 4 +SO 2 \(\to ^{{ {\text{CO/CO}}_{{2}} }}\) 2PbO·PbSO 4 +SO 2 \(\to ^{{ {\text{CO/CO}}_{{2}} }} \) 4PbO·PbSO 4 +SO 2 \(\to ^{{ {\text{CO/CO}}_{{2}} }} \) PbO+SO 2 \( \to ^{{ {\text{CO/CO}}_{{2}} }}\) Pb; (2) PbSO 4 \( \to ^{{ {\text{CO/CO}}_{{2}} }} \) PbS; (3) PbSO 4 → PbO·PbSO 4 +SO 3 → 2PbO·PbSO 4 +SO 3 → 4PbO·PbSO 4 +SO 3 → PbO+SO 3 . Reduction temperature and CO concentration were determined as major factors in the PbSO 4 reduction. In a relatively weak reductive atmosphere and at low temperature, x PbO·PbSO 4 ( x = 1, 2, 4), PbO, Pb, and SO 2 were the major products. When temperature and the CO concentration increased, PbSO 4 was selectively reduced to PbS, with sulfur in the PbSO 4 fixed in PbS, instead of emitting SO 2 /SO 3 .

Nanozymes have emerged as enzyme-mimicking nanomaterials to overcome the low stability and high cost of some natural enzymes. The design and fabrication of nanozymes with superior performance to natural enzymes are in urgent demand. Single-atom catalysts offer the unique characteristics of maximum atomic utilization, and are an excellent candidate for nanozymes. However, most of the reported synthesis methods for single-atom catalysts require the preparation of supports for single-atom catalysts in advance, which requires multiple steps and calcination in a high temperature atmosphere. Herein, Cu–N–C single-atom nanozymes (Cu–N–C SAzymes) were successfully designed via a one-pot solvothermal method. Cu–N–C SAzymes exhibited excellent peroxidase-mimicking activity that is superior to some other related nanoparticles. The mechanism study revealed that H2O2 was catalyzed by Cu–N–C SAzymes to generate reactive oxygen species. Furthermore, based on the excellent peroxidase-mimicking activity of the Cu–N–C SAzymes, a simple and sensitive detection method for H2O2 and glucose has been developed.

Transition metal carbides with good chemical stability and moderate dielectric constants are becoming popular electromagnetic (EM) absorption materials. In this work, Mo 2 C/Co/C composites, a ternary loss system (conductivity loss, polarization loss, and magnetic loss) for EM absorption, have been successfully fabricated by rationally regulating the growth of ZIF-67 on the surface of MoO 3 nanorods and subsequent pyrolysis process. The chemical compositions of Mo 2 C/Co/C composites indeed play a dominant role in tailoring their EM functions. It is revealed that conductivity loss, polarization loss, and magnetic loss are together responsible for the attenuation of EM energy. Although the involvement of Mo 2 C nanoparticles weakens magnetic loss capability to some extent, there will be a positive reinforcement in conductivity loss through the synergistic effects among different components. In addition, Mo 2 C nanoparticles can further provide considerable dipole orientation polarization and interfacial polarization. Among these ternary composite, MCC-50 with 30.9% of carbon, 53.6% of Mo 2 C, and 15.5% of Co, exhibits the best EM absorption performance, whose reflection loss intensity and qualified response bandwidth are superior to those of most carbide-based composites in previous studies. These results suggest that the rational integration of components with different loss mechanisms will be an effective pathway to enhance EM absorption.

Compared with generally reported Mo 4+ /Mo 6+ redox cycle, the exposed Mo 2+ active sites of Mo-based materials may have a superior potential to effectively activate PMS . However, Mo 2+ -involved materials as efficient catalysts in sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) has rarely been researched. In this work, a spherical Mo 2 C-loaded carbon material, Mo 2 C/C, was prepared for the first time by hydrothermal-calcination method directly used as peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator towards carbamazepine (CBZ) degradation. The results showed that the Mo 2 C/C could effectively remove nearly 100% CBZ (5 mg·L −1 ) in the presence of 0.75 mM PMS within 75 min under the optimal conditions. It was attributed to the reductive Mo 2+ , as active sites, benefits to absorb PMS on the surface to trigger electron transmission, and the defective carbon structures accelerate the activation of PMS. Consequently, the efficient Mo 2+ /Mo 4+ /Mo 6+ electron transfer was achieved, resulting in excellent catalysis. A series of reactive species including SO 4 − , OH and 1 O 2 species participated in CBZ oxidation degradation. Derived from the superior stability and reusability of Mo 2 C/C, the removal rate of CBZ still maintained above 80% even after five consecutive cycles, which is expected to be applied in the wastewater treatment including pharmaceuticals in the future.

Rational design of highly efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential to construct high-performance energy devices. In this study, we have developed an electrospinning, in situ polymerization and carbonization process to fabricate Fe doped CoO/C (Fe-CoO/C) nanofibers as efficient OER electrocatalysts. In the synthesized Fe-CoO/C nanofibers, ultrathin carbon layer can be used as conductive network to promote electron transfer and thus improve the electrocatalytic activity. At the same time, additional active sites, like bridged site, formed by Fe doping, also provides the catalyst excellent electrochemical activity in OER. The as-prepared Fe-CoO/C nanofibers exhibit an excellent OER activity with an overpotential of 362 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 in an alkaline medium, which is comparable with the commercial RuO 2 catalyst. After 2500 cyclic voltammograms (CVs) cycles test, the catalyst still maintains the initial electrocatalytic activity, demonstrating a great durability. This strategy introduces both carbon layer and Fe doping to increase the conductivity and the density of active sites of CoO nanofibers, thus enhancing the electrocatalytic activity and stability. This work offers an efficient route to develop low-cost and highly active transitional metal oxide-based OER electrocatalyst for potential renewable electrochemical energy conversion and storage.

In this study, Co nanoparticles coated with N-doped carbon films (Co@C) were fabricated using the facile one-pot method. Further, the microwave absorption performance of Co@C prepared at different calcination temperatures was evaluated. When calcinating at 700 °C, the reflection loss values of Co@C are lower than −20 dB with a thickness of 1.5–5.5 mm. The Co particles show enhanced resonation loss with the in situ growth of Co@C on the graphene oxide surface. The presence of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) can prevent agglomeration and reduce the loading content with excellent microwave absorption performance. As expected, the minimum reflection loss of Co@C/RGO reached −44.14 dB when the loading content was only 15% in a paraffin matrix. The considerable microwave absorption performance of this composite can be attributed to the enhanced impedance matching and large interface contact as well as dipolar polarization induced by RGO. This Co@C/RGO composite exhibiting enhanced microwave ability is considered to be an excellent candidate for developing lightweight microwave-absorbing materials.

Multi-component composites consisting of SiC, Ni, NiO, and C nanoparticles (NPs) are fabricated by annealing SiC NPs and the Ni-based metal organic framework (Ni-MOF) in argon. The SiC/Ni/NiO/C nanocomposites exhibit efficient electromagnetic wave absorption (EWA) in comparison with the individual SiC NPs and Ni-MOF component. The minimal reflection loss (RL) is −50.52 dB at 13 GHz for a film thickness of 4.0 mm and the maximum bandwidth is 2.96 dB for RL < −10 dB and thickness of 2.5 mm. The outstanding absorption ability is attributed to the improved conductive paths rendered by the SiC NPs and multiple interfaces rendered by the SiC, Ni, NiO, and C NPs. As a result, interfacial polarization and multiple reflections are enhanced subsequently. This work reveals a new strategy to design and fabricate high-performance EWA materials by incorporating SiC NPs into magnetic materials.

Due to high theoretical capacity (670 mA h g −1 ), MoS 2 can become a good application for energy storage. It is reported that the layer spacing of MoS 2 can be exfoliated, which improves Na + /K + insertion/extraction and promotes electron diffusion and ion transport. So, we obtained exfoliated MoS 2 nanosheets with the modification of a carbon layer, in order to form exfoliated MoS 2 @C nanosheets. With the analysis of XRD and TEM, it was found that the larger interlayer spacing was obtained. As the anodes for sodium ion batteries (SIBs), the exfoliated MoS 2 nanosheet electrode showed a high capacity (641 mA h g −1 at 50 mA g −1 ) and maintained a capacity of 214 mA h g −1 at 1000 mA g −1 after 400 cycles. Moreover, it was discussed as anode for potassium ion batteries (KIBs). It can be found that the electrode had 241 mA h g −1 at 100 mA g −1 after 20 cycles.

Hierarchical porous SiO2@C@MnO2 monoliths have been fabricated by two step approaches: Elemental carbon was covered the internal surface of porous silica monoliths with impregnation and carbonized in inert atmosphere, and MnO2 was directly grown on the skeleton of SiO2@C accompanied by redox reaction between C and KMnO4. The effects of glucose and KMnO4 concentrations, and hydrothermal reaction on the morphology of MnO2 particles on the surface of SiO2 monoliths were investigated in detail. The results showed that the optimal factors of reaction condition involved 0.08 mol·L-1 glucose solution, 0.03 mol·L-1 KMnO4 solution and the reaction time of 5 h. SEM images and BET results indicated that the macroporous structure of the as-prepared material was preserved after modification, while the specific surface area and pore volume decreased with increasing amount of MnO2 to some degree. The XPS spectra of SiO2@C@MnO2 is in good agreement with reported data in MnO2. The crystal phase of MnO2 was α-MnO2 after thermal treatment at the temperature of 600 °C from the XRD patterns. Three-dimensional porous well-defined morphological SiO2@C@MnO2 be promising materials for the catalytic elimination of air pollutants since large quantities can be obtained from porous structure combined with α-MnO2 equipped with high active performance.

Amine-functionalized Fe3O4@C nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized on a large scale via a solvothermal route. The morphology, structure and properties of the Fe3O4@C nanoparticles were investigated through different analytical tools. Due to the magnetic nature and the presence of amine-functionalized groups, the as-prepared Fe3O4@C nanoparticles were employed as magnetic carriers for lipase immobilization. Our results indicate that the lipase loading amount on the magnetic Fe3O4@C nanoparticles was about 115.6 mg of protein per g. The factors related to the catalytic activity of the immobilized lipase on the magnetic carriers were systematically investigated. Hydrolytic activity tests reveal that the immobilized lipase retains about 93% of the free enzyme activity. It should be mentioned that the thermal stability of the immobilized lipase was strikingly higher than that of the free lipase. Most importantly, the immobilized lipase retained more than 68% of its initial activities after 10 times reuse. It is hoped that the amine-functionalized Fe3O4@C nanoparticles may find an application in biotechnology and catalysis.

This manuscript presents a facile route for the preparation of ZnO–C nanocomposites using zinc citrate dihydrate as a precursor through one-step calcination under a nitrogen atmosphere. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS). The results showed ZnO nanoparticles, 5–10 nm in size, were distributed on the carbonaceous layers to form the ZnO–C nanocomposites. The as-prepared ZnO–C nanocomposites exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity compared to pure ZnO with respect to methylene blue (MB) degradation under UV irradiation, which was attributed to the improved separation of photogenerated electrons and holes in the presence of carbonaceous layers. In particular, the rate of degradation of methylene blue (MB) with ZnO–C(550N) as a photocatalyst was 4.15 times faster than that of using bare ZnO nanoparticles. Furthermore, the ZnO–C nanocomposites could be easily recycled without an obvious decrease in photocatalytic activity. The resulting ZnO–C nanocomposites have potential applications in photocatalysis and environmental protection.

Biomolecules, especially enzymes, usually have poor thermal and operational stability as well as limited reuse cycles, which greatly limit their industrial practices. Inspired by the biomineralization strategy evolved by natural organisms, we suggest nanohybrid enzyme formulation by in situ encapsulating enzyme loaded functional Fe3O4@C nanoparticles with silica. By using glucose oxidase (GOD) as an example, we demonstrate that the obtained enzyme-material hybrids are featured by their significantly enhanced operational and thermal stabilities, which exhibit a relatively steady catalytic ability in a board range of 25 °C to 65 °C. Even after 4 h of incubation at 55 °C, the GOD-material composites still retain 77% of their initial activity while the native ones only retain 30%. Besides, the nanohybrids show excellent reusability because the magnetic character of the integrated Fe3O4 particles facilitates the enzyme separation and recycle. This attempt provides a valuable approach for biological improvement by using functional materials.
