Synthesis of selenium/EDTA-derived porous carbon composite as a Li–Se battery cathode

Zhao Chenhao,Fang Shuzhen,Hu Zhibiao,Qiu Sheng’en,Liu Kaiyu

The carbon substrate with unique 3D macroporous structure has been prepared through the immediate carbonization of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and KOH mixture. The porous carbon composed of micro- and small mesoporous (2–5 nm) structure has a BET specific surface area of 1824.8 m 2  g −1 . The amorphous and nanosized Se is uniformly encapsulated into the porous structure of porous carbon using melting diffusion route, and the weight content of Se in target Se/C composite can be as high as ~50 %. As an Li–Se battery cathode, the Se/C composite delivers a reversible (2nd) discharge capacity of 597.4 mAh g −1 at 0.24C and retains a discharge capacity of 538.4 mAh g −1 at 0.24C after 100 cycles. Furthermore, the composite also has a stable capacity of 291.0 mAh g −1 at a high current of 4.8C. The high specific area and good porous size of EDTA-derived carbon substrate may a be responsibility for the excellent electrochemical performances of Se/C composite.

Effect of vapor pressure on performance of sulfurized polyacrylonitrile cathodes for Li/S batteries

Yonggang Liu,Weikun Wang,Anbang Wang,Zhaoqing Jin,Hailei Zhao,Yusheng Yang

Sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (S@pPAN) composites have been synthesized in a high pressure reactor under certain vapor pressure. According to elemental analysis, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the hydrogen content and the degree of graphitization in S@pPAN composites decreases with increasing synthesis vapor pressure, indicating that a suitably high vapor pressure is helpful in promoting the reaction between polyacrylonitrile and elemental sulfur and finally making the conductive molecular structure of sulfurized polyacrylonitrile more complete. The results show that the sulfurized polyacrylonitrile composite prepared under 5 MPa vapor pressure (S@pPAN-5) delivers a high initial discharge specific capacity of 1821 mA h g−1 and the capacity remains at 1357 mA h g−1 (616.8 mA h gcomposite−1) after 100 cycles with a retention rate of 88% calculated from the 2nd discharge capacity.

Synthesis and luminescence properties of RMgPO4:Mn2+ (R = Li, Na, and K) red phosphor

Cao Renping,Liu Xing,Bai Kailei,Chen Ting,Luo Zhiyang,Zheng Guotai,Ao Hui,Fu Jingwei

RMgPO 4 :Mn 2+ (R = Li, Na, and K) phosphors are synthesized by a solid-state reaction method in air. The crystal structures and luminescence properties are investigated. A broad emission band peaking at 638 nm of RMgPO 4 :Mn 2+ (R = Li and Na) phosphors with excitation 408 nm is observed in the range of 550–800 nm owing to the 4 T 1 (G) → 6 A 1 transition of the Mn 2+ ion. KMgPO 4 :Mn 2+ phosphor with excitation 416 nm shows a broad emission band peaking at 658 nm in the range of 550–800 nm owing to the 4 T 1 (G) → 6 A 1 transition of the Mn 2+ ion. The optimal Mn 2+ ion concentration in RMgPO 4 :Mn 2+ (R = Li, Na, and K) phosphors is about 5 mol%. The lifetimes of RMg 0.95 PO 4 :0.05Mn 2+ (R = Li, Na, and K) phosphors is ~6.21, 6.03, and 6.28 ms, respectively. The luminous mechanism is explained by Tanabe-Sugano diagram of Mn 2+ ion.

Preparation of three-dimensional macroporous–mesoporous lithium ion sieve with high Li+ adsorption capacity

Li Na,Gan Kaifeng,Lu Deli,Zhang Jinlong,Wang Lingzhi

Abstract A three-dimensionally macroporous–mesoporous lithium ion sieve (3DM-H 4 Ti 5 O 12 ) was transformed from 3DM-Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 through washing with HCl solution, which was synthesized by a combination of hydrothermal and low-temperature calcination (600 °C) treatment, using polystyrene microarray as hard-template, and titanium isopropoxide and lithium acetate as co-precursors. The influence of HCl concentration and temperature on the deintercalation rate of Li and Ti from Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 was specifically explored to maximize the extraction ratio of Li/Ti. The acceleration of Li extraction and insertion in a porous structure was verified using nonporous Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 as a control. 3DM-H 4 Ti 5 O 12 showed superior Li + adsorption performance (5.51 mmol/g) compared with its nonporous counterpart (1.12 mmol/g), which was ascribed to the reduced Li + mass transfer resistance in the highly interconnected porous channel. The ion selectivity of the 3DM-H 4 Ti 5 O 12 lithium ion sieve followed the order of Li +  > Na +  ~ Ca 2+  > K +  > Mg 2+ . The adsorption performance could be maintained after six cycles. The high adsorption capacity, excellent selectivity, and good recyclability demonstrate the prosperous potential application of 3DM-H 4 Ti 5 O 12 . Graphical Abstract

Catalytic activity of a series of subphthalocyanines in the electrolyte of Li/SOCl2 battery

Guo Rongrong,Dong Zhen,Xu Bei,Song Chao,Li Zhuo,Zhao Jianshe,Zhang Shichao

A series of subphthalocyanines with different substituents (RPhO-BSubPc(COOCH 3 ) 3 ) have been synthesized and used as catalysts to catalyze lithium/thionyl chloride (Li/SOCl 2 ) battery. All the compounds are structurally characterized by IR, UV, and element analysis. After adding RPhO-BSubPc(COOCH 3 ) 3 into the battery’s electrolyte, the energy and the capacity of the battery are increased by approximately 3.27–40.6 and 10.9–53.2 % than that of the battery in the absence of them. In addition, a three-step hypothetical mechanism is figured out to explain the complex catalytic process. By comparing the images of SEM, it is found that the addition of catalysts makes the lithium chloride layer looser, which is conducive to the transfer of electrons. Moreover, the hypothetical mechanism is confirmed by the results of cyclic voltammetry.

Carboxymethyl chitosan: A new water soluble binder for Si anode of Li-ion batteries

Lu Yue,Lingzhi Zhang,Haoxiang Zhong

Carboxymethyl chitosan (C-chitosan) is investigated as a new water soluble binder for Si anode of Li-ion batteries. The Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements reveal that the strong hydrogen bonding is formed between the hydroxylated Si surface and the polar groups (–OH, –COOH and –NH 2 ) of C-chitosan. The Si/C-chitosan anode (Si:carbon black:C-chitosan = 62:30:8 in weight ratio) exhibits a high first discharge capacity (4270 mAh g −1 ) with a first coulombic efficiency of 89%, and maintains a capacity of 950 mAh g −1 at the current density of 500 mA g −1 over 50 cycles.

Efficient and Prioritized Lithium Recovery from Spent Li(Ni0.5Co0.2Mn0.3)O2 Cathodes via SO2 Treatment

Zejia Wu,Jiashu Yuan,Hui Wang,Zaifa Pan,Jie Gao,Yonggao Xia

With the wide application of ternary lithium-ion batteries, the increased usage of batteries has resulted in a corresponding rise in the amount of discarded batteries. Here, we propose an efficient and prioritized lithium extraction process with a low environmental impact for the recovery of valuable metal components from spent LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 cathode materials. SO2 calcination–water leaching was used to recover Li, while H2SO4 acid leaching facilitated the recovery of Ni, Co, and Mn, yielding a precursor solution for the treatment of discarded NCM batteries. The effects of calcination temperature, calcination time, water leaching time, water leaching liquid–solid ratio, different battery ratios, acid leaching time, acid leaching liquid–solid ratio, and acid leaching temperature were optimized. The acid leaching process was controlled by surface chemical reactions through kinetic analysis. Under optimal conditions, Li was converted to soluble Li2SO4, achieving an impressive leaching rate of 99.7%. Ni, CO, and Mn were converted to their respective oxides. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the formation of Li2Mn(SO4)2 from Mn with Li during calcination enhances the leaching efficiency across different battery composition ratios. The activation energies of Ni, Co, and Mn during the acid leaching process were determined by kinetic calculations, yielding values of 130.19, 133.05, and 134.09 kJ mol–1, respectively. This study provides a novel method for recycling spent NCM cathode materials.

Enhancing Mg2+/Li+ separation performance of nanofiltration membranes through polyelectrolyte modulation and surface modification

Jingjun Wang,Hao Zhang,Rukang Tian,Huiyan Shen,Wei-Hua Li,Yunkun Wang

The increasing demand for lithium resources in the rapidly growing new energy industry has spurred interest in efficient lithium extraction from salt-lakes using Nanofiltration membranes, owing to their impressive ionic rejection capabilities. However, achieving effective Mg 2+ /Li + selective separation remains a critical challenge for the widespread application of NF membranes in lithium extraction. This study focuses on the utilization of poly(dimethyldiallylammonium chloride)-modified polyethersulfone substrate for interfacial polymerization modulation in the preparation of polyamide nanofiltration membrane. The prepared membrane exhibited high MgCl 2 rejection. And then the prepared membrane was subsequently optimized by post-modification with piperazine. Previous and subsequent modifications resulted in smaller pores, narrower pore size distribution, and lower surface negativity of the modified membrane. These properties contributed to the significantly higher MgCl 2 rejection rate of the modified membrane (94.7%) than that of the Control membrane (46.1%). This excellent rejection property ensured the efficient Mg 2+ /Li  +  separation performance of the modified membrane. It was noteworthy that the Mg 2+ /Li + separation factor for lithium extraction in simulated brine reached an impressive 77.2. In addition, the modified membrane retained a comparable pure water permeance and Na 2 SO 4 rejection rate as the control membrane and showed excellent stability, significantly improving the Mg 2+ /Li  +  separation efficiency while reducing energy consumption. This study presents a simple strategy to fabricate NF membranes with excellent Mg 2+ /Li + separation factor.

Electrochemical lithium extraction from high Mg/Li brine using LiMn2O4-Zn mixed-Ion battery

Yanan Wei,Qian Zhang,Yuan Han,Xinyu Xu,Wenmeihui Zhao,Ying Hu,Rongmei Liu,Guixiang Qian,Zhongliang Tian,Chao Yang

In China, 80 % of lithium resources are in the salt lakes of the Tibetan Plateau, although the Mg 2+ /Li + ratios in them are too high, limiting the development of China’s lithium extraction industry from the salt lakes. This study investigates the potential of the LiMn 2 O 4 -Zn cell system for lithium extraction from brines with high Mg 2+ /Li + ratios. The system demonstrates excellent selectivity for Li + and efficiently extracts Li + even in brines with Mg 2+ /Li + ratios as high as 100:1 (wt%). The system operates stably at various brine concentrations, particularly in high-salinity environments. The study also investigates the kinetic performance of the LMO-Zn system, revealing optimal performance at high Li + concentrations and moderate current densities. The LiMn 2 O 4 -Zn cell system presents a promising approach for lithium extraction from brines, offering high selectivity, reversibility, and adaptability.

Engineering and construction of multi-functional Janus separator for high-stability Li-CO2 battery

Hangyu Li,Yang Gu,Xiaoyuan Zeng,Kai Ding,Haotian Tan,Peng Dong,Yanjia Zhang,Jie Xiao

Due to the high theoretical energy density, lithium-carbon dioxide (Li-CO 2 ) batteries provide unique advantages when using CO 2 to generate electricity. However, the issues with lithium dendrite generated by uneven deposition and quick cathode passivation continue to impede the development of Li-CO 2 batteries. In this work, a Janus separator with dual functionalities is created using an in-situ growth and hydrothermal technique. It can be used to expand the cathode to alleviate the quick passivation of the cathode, in addition to inhibiting the growth of lithium dendrite. On the one hand, as an ion transport framework, Prussian blue (PB) nanocubes formed in-situ on the anode side can control the uniform transport of Li-ions and prevent the proliferation of lithium dendrites. The Prussian blue and reduced graphene oxide composite material (PB-rGO) on the cathode side, on the other hand, can be employed as an extension of the cathode, which not only contains more discharge products but also encourages their decomposition, playing a self-cleaning role. Moreover, the Li||Li symmetrical battery with Janus separator exhibits a steady cycle life of more than 1700 h. Also, when applied to a Li-CO 2 battery, it demonstrates an extremely high discharge capacity of 12100 mAh g −1 and an exceptionally long cycle life of 3144 h.

Effect of quaternary ammonium salt structures on Mg2+/Li+ separation performance of modified membranes

Jiyue Wang,Yang Xu,Qi Zhang,Qiang Zhao,Zhitian Liu

Surface modification is an effective strategy to improve separation performance of Mg 2+ /Li + nanofiltration membranes, but less is known about how chemical structures of modification molecules affect separation performances of resultant membranes. In this work, three types of quaternary ammonium salts with modulated structures were designed to modify polyethyleneimine-trimesoyl chloride (PEI-TMC) membranes. The surface and cross-section morphologies, mean pore sizes, charge and hydrophilicity properties of the modified membranes were characterized. These quaternary ammonium salts can tune membrane properties effectively, and impart good separation performance to modified membranes. Molecular structures of quaternary ammonium salts affect the diffusion of the monomer into the organic phase and the reactivity with the acyl chloride. The flux of modified membranes are 99.6 Lm −2  h −1 , 112.2 Lm −2  h −1 , and 128.8 Lm −2  h −1 , and the rejection of MgCl 2 are 93.2 %, 94.9 %, and 92.8 %, respectively. The modified membranes also show good retention for heavy metal ions (e.g., Cu 2+ , Cr 3+ , Zn 2+ , Co 2+ , and Ni 2+ ).

Effective polysulfides regulation in high-performance Li–S batteries via novel VO2–VS2 heterostructure

Hou Yao-Lin,Zhang Yu-Qing,Li Dan,Xie Hai-Ming,Liu Jia,Liu Yu-Long,Zhu Jie-Fang

Developing effective heterostructure strategies to mitigate the shuttling effect and accelerate lithium polysulfide (LiPS) conversion remains a critical challenge in lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. Here, we report the first carbon–free VO 2 –VS 2 heterostructure material synthesized via in situ sulfurization, applied as a modifier on a commercial polypropylene (PP) separator (denoted as VO 2 –VS 2 @PP). The as–prepared VO 2 –VS 2 nanorods synergistically combine the high absorptivity of VO 2 with the efficient catalytic properties of VS 2 , simultaneously enhancing LiPS anchoring and promoting its conversion. We systematically investigate the influence of material composition on battery performance, leveraging these functional attributes, Li–S cells incorporating VO 2 –VS 2 @PP exhibit exceptional cycle stability (over 500 cycles at 1C), impressive rate performance (807 mAh·g –1 at 5C), desirable reversibility (49.9% capacity retention after 300 cycles at 5C) and exceptional pouch cell performance (3.65 mAh·cm –2 after 50 stable cycles at 0.1C). This study underscores the potential of tailored heterostructures in realizing high–performance Li–S batteries, offering new insights for next–generation energy storage solutions. Graphical abstract
