One-Pot Synthesis of Novel Injectable and Self-Healing Borosilicate Bioglass/Konjac Glucan Hydrogel With Berberine Hydrochloride for Acne Treatment

Jiaqi Dou,Yigong Zhang,Hai Wang,Zexu Ma,Pengli Jin,Guangda Li,Bianyun Cai

To address the limitations of traditional konjac glucomannan (KGM) crosslinking strategies relying on strong alkaline and oxidation conditions, as well as the growing challenge of antibiotic resistance in acne therapy, we designed a novel antibiotic-free berberine hydrochloride (BBR)-loaded KGM hydrogel via a one-pot method. Biocompatible borosilicate bioglass was used as a mild crosslinker to fabricate the hydrogel through bioglass-mediated chemical and physical interactions, with BBR synchronously encapsulated during the one-pot process. Three hydrogel formulations with gradient BBR loadings (1, 2, and 5 wt%) were prepared. All hydrogels exhibited porous structures, favorable swelling capacity, excellent self-healing, and injectable properties. In vitro transdermal tests demonstrated sustained and stable drug release. The BBR-loaded hydrogels showed comedolytic ability close to that of salicylic acid, strong antibacterial activity against Cutibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus , favorable hemocompatibility, no cytotoxicity to L929 cells, and promoted cell proliferation and migration. Among them, the 2 wt% BBR-loaded hydrogel showed the optimal wound-healing effect and favorable anti-inflammatory efficacy. These findings suggest that the novel hydrogel containing 2 wt% BBR has potential for application in treating acne vulgaris.

An Amphipathic Supramolecular Networks of Catechol-Functionalized Grafted Terpolymer for Oil–Water Separation

Cheng Cheng,Lijun Liu

Fine surfactant-stabilized emulsion separation from industrial produced water remains a critical challenge, as conventional membranes suffer from severe fouling, poor dual-phase adaptability, and limited stability. Herein, a high-performance oil–water separation membrane was fabricated via RAFT polymerization and dopamine post-functionalization, constructing a catechol-functionalized supramolecular network stabilized by hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking. This work features three core innovations: a well-defined catechol-functionalized PDMA- g -PEG-co-PDA terpolymer, liquid-triggered adaptive wettability without external stimuli, and a robust supramolecular network for enhanced mechanical and antifouling properties. The membrane exhibits exceptional hydration capability, realizing molecular discrimination of oil–water mixtures via distinct diffusion kinetics. It achieves > 99% separation efficiency for all tested oil-in-water/water-in-oil emulsions at a high flux of ~850 L·m −2 ·h −1 and maintains > 99% efficiency after 15+ recyclable cycles. This intelligent amphipathic membrane addresses key limitations of traditional separation materials, offering a sustainable high-throughput solution for industrial oily wastewater treatment and environmental remediation, advancing the design of adaptive separation materials.

Functional Flexible Polyvinyl Chloride Plastics via the Addition of Core-Shell Star Copolymers CA-HPCL

Tianyu Liu,Yunjie Cai,Tong Shen,Yunhan Wu,Qi Mu,Ranxue Chen,Zezhong Lin,Rongchao Xue,Chong Wang,Guiying Zhu

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is an important plastic material. How to enhance the stability of plasticizers in PVC materials is crucial. In this work, internal plasticization was achieved through the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of polycaprolactone (PCL) grafted from the unsubstituted hydroxyl groups of cellulose acetate (CA). A series of hyperbranched copolymers (CA-HPCL) with CA acetate-rich hard core and PCL-rich soft shell were prepared. Under similar elongation at break conditions, PVC plasticized with CA-HPCL shows higher modulus, strength, and toughness than linear plasticized PVC and other traditional low-molar-mass plasticizers without hard cores. The obtained plasticized PVC material exhibits a high modulus of approximately 30 MPa while ensuring an elongation at break of more than 300%. Further DSC and FTIR characterizations, combined with a comparison with the linear C 5 H 12 O-PCL plasticizer, reveal that this high rigidity is attributed to the physical cross-linking effect of CA-HPCL on PVC chains. Meanwhile, the migration stability test shows that CA-HPCL exhibits excellent anti-migration properties in PVC matrix. The migration rates of all CA-HPCL-PVC samples are lower than 5%, which is only 0.072 times that of DOP-PVC. Therefore, such films with excellent flexibility, elongation and high modulus are expected to be widely applied in the medical industry.

Structure–Property Regulation of PA5T/56 Copolyamides and Dual-Responsive Shape-Memory Behavior of Their MWCNT-COOH Composites

Jiaying Liu,Guang Nie,Shuai Yang,Yanmin Zhang,Ziyun Li,Sitong Wang,Zijian Song,Shuanli Du,Yingchun Li

Semi-aromatic polyamides (SAPAs) are emerging as promising engineering polymers due to their unique combination of high rigidity, thermal stability, and processability. However, pure SAPAs suffer from limited electrical conductivity and multifunctional responsiveness, hindering their application in smart materials and actuators. In this paper, PA5T/56 copolyamides with varying terephthalic acid/adipic acid molar ratios (3/7–7/3) were synthesized via melt polycondensation and characterized mainly by 1 H NMR, FTIR. PA5T/56 (3/7), with the optimal balance of mechanical performance and processability, was selected as the composite matrix. Composites containing different contents of carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-COOH, 0, 5, 10, 15 wt%) were prepared by solution casting. The effects of MWCNT-COOH on the thermal stability, mechanical properties, and especially thermo- and electro-induced shape memory behaviors of the composites were comprehensively investigated. The results show that MWCNT-COOH markedly improves the thermo-induced shape memory at an appropriate loading, with the shape recovery rate reaching 82.8% and the shape fixity rate exceeding 90% at 10 wt% MWCNT-COOH. 15 wt% MWCNT-COOH/PA5T/56 can achieve electro-induced shape recovery via Joule heating within 44 s. Overall, this work establishes the structure–property relationships of PA5T/56 copolyamide with tailored monomer compositions and demonstrates the effectiveness of MWCNT-COOH in imparting thermo- and electro-responsive functionalities.

Preparation and Application of Res@KGMMA/α-CSH/HMSN for Alveolar Bone Repair

Liying Huang,Lixian Zhang,Jun Su,Zhitian Shi,Min Zhang,Tingting Yan

Inflammation, trauma, or diabetes can cause alveolar bone to become soft, slack, and bone-deficient. If left untreated, this can eventually result in resorption and constriction of the alveolar bone. The inability of the alveolar bone to heal itself clinically presents a challenge for future dental implants and other procedures. In order to overcome this difficulty, we created an injectable, light-curable hydrogel composite (Res@KGMMA/α-CSH/HMSN) that contains α-calcium sulfate hemihydrate (α-CSH) and hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (HMSN) loaded with resveratrol (Res) in a methacrylated konjac glucomannan (KGMMA) matrix. This composite effectively conforms to irregular bone defects, gels quickly when exposed to blue light, and allows for sustained drug release while reducing the risk of leakage. Significant antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli was shown in vitro tests, along with increased human periodontal ligament stem cell proliferation. By the eighth week, micro-CT and histological analyses in a rabbit alveolar bone defect model showed significant new bone formation and upregulated expression of osteogenic markers (OPG, RUNX2, COL I, OPN, OCN). These results highlight the composite's exceptional osteogenic potential, biocompatibility, and clinical promise for alveolar bone regeneration.

Reinforced PBAT/PLA Foams With Lignin as a Bio-Based Nucleating Agent for High-Performance Building Insulation

Jie Zhang,Yantao Song,Kang Chen,Han Li,Haiyan Tan,Dingyuan Zheng,Yanhua Zhang

Low melt-strength poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) foams suffer from poor pore stability, which significantly limits their practical applications. To overcome this limitation, enhancing the melt strength of PBAT-based composites is essential for improving the stability of foamed materials. In this study, PBAT/PLA/lignin composite foams were prepared using a chemical hot-pressing method, with PBAT, PLA, and lignin as raw materials and azodicarbonamide (AC) as the blowing agent, aiming to develop renewable materials with favourable mechanical properties and thermal conductivity. The addition of PLA positively influenced the mechanical properties of the composites, while the complex molecular structure and rigidity of lignin resulted in lower thermal conductivity and enhanced mechanical properties. The results demonstrated that incorporating 20 wt% PLA and 10 wt% lignin into PBAT produced a uniform and fine pore structure. The resulting composite exhibited a homogeneous, fine-cell morphology, with a thermal conductivity of 0.100 W/(m·k), and impact and compressive strengths of 12.41 kJ/m 3 and 12.91 MPa, respectively. These combined attributes make the composite a promising candidate for building insulation applications.

Preparation and Properties of Organosilicon-Modified High Solid Content Hydroxy Polyacrylate Aqueous Dispersions

Mengshi Wang,Guanhao Ma,Xue Xu,Jinqing Qu

Two-component waterborne polyurethane is composed of water-based polymer polyols and water-dispersible polyisocyanates. Among them, hydroxyl polyacrylate aqueous dispersion (PAD) has attracted extensive research interest owing to its small particle size and exceptional film-forming performance. However, conventional PAD suffers from critical limitations, including low solid content and insufficient chemical resistance of cured film, which severely restrict its industrial applications. To address these drawbacks, a sulfonic acid-containing vinyl hydrophilic monomer was synthesized to fabricate high-solid and low-viscosity PAD, followed by organosilicon modification. The effects of organosilicon type and dosage on the properties of PAD and its cured film were systematically investigated. Results reveal that the dosage of vinyl-based sulfonate enhances the solid content of PAD and improves coating transparency. Organosilicon incorporation effectively boosts the chemical resistance of the coating film but compromises the storage stability of PAD. Notably, PAD modified with vinyl triisopropoxysilane (KH1706) exhibits optimal overall performance, with a solid content of 45%, a low viscosity of 357 mPa s, along with excellent chemical resistance and thermal stability.

Self-Assembly Behavior and Mechanism of Anionic Amphiphilic Polyurethane in Water/Acetone Medium: Effects of Molecular Structure and Acetone Content

Xiaojun Wang,Qingqing Chen,Dongmei Yu,Dandan Zhang,Shengpeng Wang,Yongzhong Bao

To prepare stable, high solid content or low viscosity waterborne polyurethane (PU) dispersion from PU with a low hydrophilic group content is still challenging. In the present work, anionic amphiphilic PU prepolymer with different chemical and sequential structures was synthesized, dissolved in acetone and then self-assembled in water. Effects of PU prepolymer structure and the composition of the dispersion phase on the self-assembly behavior and mechanism were elucidated by low-field nuclear magnetic resonance, particle size distribution and surface tension analysis, and molecular dynamics simulations. It demonstrates that the hydration of hydrophilic groups and the association of hydrophobic segments serve as the primary thermodynamic driving forces for the self-assembly of amphiphilic PU prepolymer, and the concentration of PU prepolymer-acetone solution alters the nucleation mechanism of the assembly. A dual-hydrophobic-chain structure significantly enhances hydrophobic association through a multipoint bridging effect. Consequently, the resulting waterborne PU dispersion exhibited a smaller particle size (average ≈90 nm) and a greater utilization efficiency of hydrophilic groups. A suitable acetone content in the PU prepolymer solution (< 55 wt%) facilitates preparation of waterborne PU dispersion with a high colloid stability.

Ionically Toughened Cellulose Hydrogel for Self-Regulating Smart Windows and Wearable Sensors

Tingting Wang,Shirun Dong,Yulin Zhu,Wenbin Yang,Yongsheng Li,Fangfang He,Kai Zhang,Zhuoni Jiang

Cellulose-based hydrogels exhibit excellent optical transparency, biocompatibility, and flexibility, offering promising applications in biomedicine, energy-efficient buildings, and smart electronics. However, their practical use is limited by inherent drawbacks such as poor mechanical strength and fixed thermoresponsive range. In this study, we introduced poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and CaCl 2 into the hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) hydrogel network to form a multiple dynamic crosslinking network, resulting in a synergistically toughened HPC-PAA-Ca 2+ thermochromic hydrogel with a tunable phase transition temperature range of 10°C–42°C. The photothermal regulation property enables its use in energy-efficient smart windows, demonstrating a cooling effect of 13.1°C in a model house. The mechanical performance of the hydrogel was enhanced by carboxyl-Ca 2+ coordination bonds, achieving a mechanical stress of 280 kPa, elongation of 460%, toughness of 0.56 MJ/m 3 , and excellent compression recovery (rebound rate > 95%). The incorporation of Ca 2+ also endows HPC-PAA-Ca 2+ hydrogel with high electrical conductivity of 1.48 S/m, enabling its use as a sensitive strain sensor capable of accurately monitoring human joint movements (elbow, wrist, and fingers). This work advances the development of multifunctional cellulose-based hydrogels and expands their potential applications in smart materials.

Stretchable Elastomer Strain Sensor Based on a Three-Dimensional Cross-Linked Conductive Network of Polyaniline/3-Aminobenzenesulfonic Acid-Epoxidized Natural Rubber for Human Motion Monitoring

Gan Peng,Yizhong Yuan,Xiaohui Tian,Jinyu Sun,Huimei Yu,Chunhua Cai

Flexible strain sensors, as crucial components of smart wearable devices, have garnered significant attention in fields such as human health monitoring. However, developing flexible strain sensors with high strength, sensitivity, extensibility, and long-term stability remains a challenge. In this study, a straightforward method was successfully developed for fabricating a cross-linked, conductive flexible strain sensor based on polyaniline/3-aminobenzenesulfonic acid-epoxidized natural rubber (PANI/3-ABSA-ENR) with a cross-linked structure. This was achieved by grafting 3-aminobenzenesulfonic acid (3-ABSA) onto epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) nanospheres, followed by in situ polymerization of aniline (ANI) onto the rubber nanospheres to form an effective cross-linked structure. At a PANI content of 13 wt% (PANI/ENR), the conductive flexible strain sensor exhibits outstanding comprehensive performance. Consequently, this strain sensor demonstrates ultra-high tensile strength (approximately 10 MPa), a wide strain range (approximately 1200%), and long-term reliability (2500 cycles at 50% strain). Simultaneously, the PANI/3-ABSA-ENR strain sensor exhibits a high gauge factor (GF = 21.6) and short response time (230 ms). Furthermore, this strain sensor can detect and capture both subtle and large-amplitude human motion signals, such as those from limb joints, cheeks, and mouth. This demonstrates the PANI/3-ABSA-ENR strain sensor's broad application potential in smart wearable devices.

Flexible and rigid polyurethane based polymer electrolyte for high-performance lithium battery

Yunqi Gao,Changhao Feng,Hairui Wang,Minghan Xu,Chengzhong Zong,Qingfu Wang

The development of new polymer electrolytes is greatly significant due to the improvement of the energy density and safety of lithium batteries. Comparing with a single polymer electrolyte, the composite polymer electrolyte has better performance, especially some based on the concept of rigid–flexible coupling polymer electrolytes. In this study, a series of polyurethane with various proportion of soft and rigid segments are synthesized and used as a composite polymer electrolyte (C-PU) together with cellulose membrane. The optimized polymer electrolyte C-PU20 (with 20 wt% of the hard segment) exhibits high ionic conductivity of 2.4 mS/cm at 25°C and wide electrochemical stability window up to 4.8 V. Moreover, the C-PU20 electrolyte for LiFePO 4 /Li cell shows more fantastic cycling performance with capacity retention of 96% after 300 cycles at 0.5 C and better C-rate capability compared with the pristine cellulose membrane. All the findings indicate that the C-PU20 electrolyte is a very prospective polymer electrolyte for high-performance lithium batteries.

Three-component mixed matrix organic/inorganic hybrid membranes for pervaporation separation of ethanol–water mixture

Zhigao Zhu,Deng Hu,Yuanren Liu,Ying Xu,Gaofeng Zeng,Wei Wang,Yanfeng Zhang,Fuyi Cui

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were made by incorporating vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS)-modified Silicalite-1 zeolite nanoparticles (V-Silicalite-1 NPs) into fluorinated polybenzoxazine (F-PBZ) modified polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer through in situ polymerization method. The membrane morphology, surface wettability, and pervaporation performance were systematically investigated. The addition of F-PBZ into PDMS membranes resulted in substantially improved flux and marginal increase of separation factor, which is the result of higher free volume and higher hydrophobicity caused by the addition of F-PBZ. The modification of Silicalite-1 NPs improved the interfacial contact between zeolite crystals and polymer phase. The incorporation of hydrophobic V-Silicalite-1 zeolite NPs into the PDMS membranes led to much higher separation factor but reduced flux, which is the result of increased hydrophobicity and reduced free volume. The three-component MMMs with V-Silicalite-1 zeolite NPs in the F-PBZ fluorinated PDMS exhibited separation factor of 28.7 and flux of 0.207 kg m −2 h −1 for 5 wt % ethanol aqueous solution at 50 °C, while the pure PDMS membranes only had separation factor of 4.8 and flux of 0.088 kg m −2 h −1 . The substantial increase of both flux and separation factor were attributed to the higher hydrophobicity and free volume caused by the incorporation of both hydrophobic zeolite crystals and F-PBZ polymer into the PDMS membranes. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
