N-Doped CQDs as a Fluorescence Probe for Tiopronin Detection in Pharmaceutical Formulations via Static Quenching

Liu Tianhui,Yan Yiling,Chen Zhenni,Zhao Chengfei

In recent years, fluorescent sensors based on carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have been widely reported for pharmaceutical detection owing to their numerous advantages. In this study, a Fe³⁺-mediated fluorescence “off–on” sensor based on nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) was developed for the selective detection of tiopronin (TPN). Briefly, highly fluorescent N-CQDs were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method using citric acid monohydrate and diethylenetriamine. XPS, FT-IR, UV-Vis, fluorescence spectroscopy, and DLS confirmed that the N-CQDs exhibit uniform size, aqueous stability, excitation-independent fluorescence, and a high quantum yield of 62.99%. Fe³⁺ selectively bound to N-CQDs to form a complex, resulting in fluorescence quenching. Subsequently, upon the addition of TPN, the fluorescence of N-CQDs showed a proportional recovery. During this process, the competitive coordination between TPN and Fe³⁺ led to the release of Fe³⁺ from the N-CQDs, thereby restoring the quenched fluorescence. The limit of detection (LOD) of TPN was 80 μmol/L, with a linear range of 0.2–0.7 mmol/L and an R² value of 0.9993. The content of TPN in enteric-coated tablets was quantified using this method, yielding recovery rates ranging from 92.59% to 104.22%. This method is simple, rapid, and reliable, offering good sensitivity without the need for expensive reagents or complex equipment. Enhancing the thermal stability of activated carbon in VOCs adsorption by incorporation of silicon-doped CQDs

Hongwei Ren,Liang Han,Qing Li,Xiaoyun Liu,Xiaoyu Huang,Luyu Jia,Zhaoxiong Huang,Jinfeng Zhang

As a widely utilized adsorbent for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from industrial waste gases, activated carbon (AC) poses a risk of fire due to its tendency of spontaneous combustion under oxidizing conditions. The introduction of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) into AC via immersion method can improve its thermal stability thus reducing the fire risk. Meanwhile, it can further enhance its VOCs adsorption performance. The Si-doped CQDs modified AC was synthesized and characterized using TEM, FT-IR, and XRD. After modification, a significant presence of crystalline structures and compact structures were observed on the surface of AC, resulting in increased intermolecular forces and suppressed thermal decomposition of AC. The natural tendency and thermal safety of modified AC were studied by thermal analysis. The spontaneous combustion results showed that after toluene adsorption, the autoignition temperature of Si-doped CQDs modified AC was 59.7 ℃, much higher than that of AC. The activation energy increased from 31.90 kJ·mol −1 to 69.97 kJ·mol −1 . The relative fire safety factor of Si-doped CQDs modified AC was 1.3, superior to unmodified AC, significantly reducing the thermal safety risk. The thermal investigation during the toluene adsorption of AC were studied by μRC. The study showed that the heat released by the modified AC at different temperatures was significantly lower than the unmodified AC. The Si-doped CQDs modified AC effectively increased the thermal stability of the AC and significantly reduced the propensity for fire hazard of VOCs adsorption by AC.

Synergic Electrochemiluminescence System with Hemicucurbituril-Based CQDs and a Chiral Macrocycle for Recognition Toward Levamisole Hydrochloride

Xian-Yi Jin,Jia Luo,Hang Cong,Jiang-Lin Zhao

Graphical The enantioselective analysis of levamisole hydrochloride was achieved by a synergic electrochemiluminescence (ECL) system, in which a chiral macrocycle CycHemiQ[6] was employed as the recognition host, and the emitter of HemiQ[6]-based CQDs in the electrolyte provided high sensitivity and selectivity. A chiral macrocycle, cyclohexylhemicucurbit[6]uril (CycHemiQ[6]), is employed as the recognition host, to construct a chiral electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor system, with the emitter of hemicucurbituril-based carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and the co-reactant of Na 2 S 2 O 8 for the detection of levamisole hydrochloride ( L -LV), a drug with immunomodulatory and anticancer activities. The host–guest interaction between the chiral macrocycle and the guest molecule L -LV is considered to achieve high selectivity and high sensitivity detection of L -LV. The detection limit of 0.0075 µM is achieved in the linear range of 0.01–10 µM. The system exhibits strong anti-interference ability to other small molecules, with good stability, reproducibility, and recoveries. The established method provides an effective approach for monitoring L -LV drug residues, which could prevent adverse effects such as hematotoxicity and granulocytopenia caused by excessive accumulation.

Fluorescence enantioselective sensing of lactic acid enantiomers by Zn-MOC@CQDs with double chiral building blocks

Xinwen Jia,Mengyun Lu,Wenjing Zhang,Wuduo Zhao,Ajuan Yu,Shusheng Zhang

Chiral carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with –SH, –NH 2 functional groups were grafted onto a metal–organic cage (Zn-MOC) with unsaturated metal sites through coordination bond, and then a novel bichiral composite Zn-MOC@CQDs was constructed for the chiral discrimination of LA enantiomers. Zn-MOC@CQDs exhibited a high fluorescence detection sensitivity for L -LA instead of D -LA, and the enantioselectivity coefficient for LA enantiomers was 2.34. Zn-MOC@CQDs exhibited more excellent enantioselectivity than the single components of CQDs and Zn-MOC, and the key reason may be the chiral synergistic effect between the different chiral building blocks.

Synthesis of 3D CQDs/urchin-like and yolk-shell TiO2 hierarchical structure with enhanced photocatalytic properties

Zhaoying Guo,Qi Wang,Tao Shen,Xianjie Hou,Jianlei Kuang,Wenxiu Liu,Wenbin Cao

A novel CQDs/TiO 2 hierarchical structure with enhanced photocatalytic properties was achieved by uniformly decorating urchin-like and yolk-shell TiO 2 microspheres (UYTMs) with carbon quantum dots (CQDs) through an environmentally friendly hydrothermal process. The CQDs were firstly synthesized by the electrochemical method, and the TEM, Raman and PL characterizations strongly indicated that the as-prepared CQDs exhibited good dispersion, high crystallinity and unique up-conversion properties. The UYTMs synthesized by a NaOH-assisted hydrothermal process showed stable 3D hierarchical structure and large surface area, which was beneficial for light absorption and contacting with contamination. The good combination of CQDs and UYTMs was further successfully achieved during the hydrothermal process, and demonstrated by a series of tests. The photocatalytic experiments suggested that the CQDs/UYTMs exhibited better photocatalytic activities than the pure UYTMs and P25 under both visible and UV light irradiation. The CQDs/UYTMs combining with 6 wt% of CQDs showed the best photocatalytic efficiency, while excessive CQDs tended to inhibit the photocatalytic activity. According to the results and discussions, a possible mechanism in improving the photocatalytic efficiency of the CQDs/UYTMs is significantly proposed. The up-conversion property of CQDs can broaden the absorption spectrum of CQDs/UYTMs to the visible light. Moreover, the CQDs, as the electron reservoirs, are efficient to separate the electrons and holes, leading to an improved photocatalytic activity of CQDs/UYTMs.

A general approach to 3D porous CQDs/MxOy (M = Co, Ni) for remarkable performance hybrid supercapacitors

Guijuan Wei,Xixia Zhao,Kun Du,Zhaojie Wang,Ming Liu,Shuo Zhang,Shutao Wang,Jun Zhang,Changhua An

To date, zero-dimensional carbon quantum dots (CQDs), as a new carbon nanomaterials, have attracted attention in the improvement of the electrical conductivity for electrode materials. However, few attempts have been made to the use of CQDs as the structure-directing agent for the assembly of functional micro/nanoelectrodes. Herein, we have developed a general, and simple strategy to fabricate 3D porous hierarchical carbon quantum dots (CQDs)/M x O y (M   =   Co, Ni) composite nanostructures from thermolysis of corresponding CQDs/M(OH) y , where CQDs play crucial role as a structure-directing agent in tuning the morphologies of the M(OH) y . With the merits of the large electroactive surface area, superior electronic conductivity of CQDs, and fruitful porous structure, the as-fabricated battery-type electrode materials present amazing supercapacitor performance. For example, the as-made porous hierarchical CQDs/Co 3 O 4 nanoarchitectures exhibited remarkable electrochemical performance with 1603   F   g −1 at 1   A   g −1 , excellent rate capacity of 70.6% from 1 to 100   A   g −1 , superior cycling ability (97.0% capacity remained after 2000 cycles). Furthermore, the CQDs/Co 3 O 4 //AC hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) exhibits a high specific capacity of 210.4   F   g −1 with 74.8   W   h   kg −1 . The present work can be enlarged for the design of other functional 3D hierarchical micro-nanostructures in the fields of energy storage, catalysis, and photo/electrocatalysis.

Construction of highly active Fe/N-CQDs/MCN1 photocatalytic self-Fenton system for degradation of ciprofloxacin

Donghuan Meng,Ye Lei,Menghan Pang,Jianrong Qiu,Chenghua Fan,Yuyan Feng,Dongbo Wang

In the graphitic carbon nitride-based photocatalytic reaction, the redox ability and electron transport ability of photocatalyst have an important influence on its activity. The Photo-Fenton reaction system was constructed by modifying N-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) on the surface of supramolecular self-assembled carbon nitride and introducing Fe ions into the carbon nitride planar structure . The xFe/N-CQDs/MCN1 catalysts with different iron contents were prepared, which had significant degradation effect on organic pollutants . Among them, 0.2Fe/N-CQDs/MCN1 degraded 76% of ciprofloxacin (CIP) within 120 min. Various characterizations demonstrate that photocatalytic activity are enhanced due to the surface modification of N-CQDs enhancing electron transfer rate on the surface of photocatalysts and the doping of Fe ions providing active sites for Fenton reaction . At the same time, the formation of chemical bonds limits the leaching of iron and avoids secondary environmental pollution . These results indicate that the novel catalyst has excellent application potential in the field of environmental photocatalysis .

Na2MnPO4F/Ti3C2-CQDs composite cathode material with enhanced electrochemical properties for lithium/sodium hybrid ion battery

Dan Sun,Rongting Guo,Yiju Lv,Wei Li,Mingjun Lu,Qiumei Wei,Zheng Liu,Guo-Cheng Han

Na 2 MnPO 4 F and Ti 3 C 2 ‑carbon quantum dots (CQDs) nanocomposites were prepared by wet mixing method combined with spray drying method, and the two materials were further compounded by heat treatment to get different ratios of Na 2 MnPO 4 F/Ti 3 C 2 -CQDs cathode material (NTC), the effects of Ti 3 C 2 -CQDs on the structure and electrochemical performance of the composite of Na 2 MnPO 4 F as a lithium-ion battery cathode material were investigated. The results showed that Na 2 MnPO 4 F was uniformly attached to the surface and between layers of Ti 3 C 2 -CQDs. The initial specific discharge capacity of NTC-2 at 0.1C was 67.8 mAh·g −1 , and the reversible capacity after 100 cycles was 60.7 mAh·g −1 , the capacity retention rate was as high as 90%, which all showed that Ti 3 C 2 -CQDs can enhance the cycle performance, rate performance and capacity retention rate of Na 2 MnPO 4 F. It also showed good rate performance under high current density . After the high current test, the current returned to 0.1C, and the capacity can be restored to the original value, which showed that the material has good structural stability. Therefore, Ti 3 C 2 -CQDs doped Na 2 MnPO 4 F is an important way to improve the electrochemical performance of polyanionic compounds.

Synergistic effect of confinement and photocatalysis-endowed adjustable peroxymonosulfate activation pathway to degrade antibiotics

Shizong Wang,Jianlong Wang

This study firstly reported the regulation of PMS activation pathway via the novel catalyst (CQDs/Co@CN) that contained carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and confined nano Co dual active sites. CQDs/Co@CN showed superior catalytic activity for PMS activation due to the synergistic effect of CQDs and confined nano Co, and sulfamethoxazole degradation rate reached 0.661 min −1 , which was even higher than that obtained by single atom catalyst. The reactive species in the system of CQDs/Co@CN/PMS could be easily regulated by the visible light. In the absence of visible light, PMS was mainly activated to produce Co(IV) = O, while it was activated to simultaneously produce radicals and Co(IV) = O in the presence of visible light. Moreover, the yields of Co(IV) = O increased by about 10 %. Experimental results and DFT calculation demonstrated that CQDs played crucial role in the regulation of reactive species. This study could provide a way to modulate the reactive species by visible light.

Visible light-based photocatalytic ozonation of DCF over CQDs/FeTiO3 heterostructure in a spinning disk photocatalytic reactor

A. Al-Farraji,Saad H. Ammar,Hanan H. Abed,Zaid H. Jabbar

Photocatalytic ozonation is an advanced oxidation process (AOP) that has recently demonstrated its strong oxidation capabilities for efficient wastewater treatment using sunlight and air as the ozone source. Additionally, the spinning disc photocatalytic reactor (SDPR) has been widely adopted recently as an intensification approach for photocatalytic processes. Herein, an efficient approach has been adopted to enhance the degradation performance of photocatalytic ozonation process over CQDs/FeTiO 3 photocatalyst film in a SDPR for synergistically enhancing the degradation of diclofenac sodium (DCF). The DCF degradations were compared in different treatment systems in the SDPR, including ozonation, catalytic-ozonation, photocatalysis, and photocatalytic ozonation. High photocatalytic ozonation performance (99.3% degradation efficiency, 85.8% mineralization, and high stability after six runs) has been acquired over CQDs/FeTiO 3 photocatalyst film under visible-light exposure. The effective separation of photogenerated charge carriers due to CQDs deposition, and high generation of ORS resulting from the combined systems were responsible for the enhanced photocatalytic performance.

A CQDs-doped europium-DPA framework for fluorescence and colorimetric dual-mode sensing of amoxicillin and ciprofloxacin

Yi Jintao,Fu Nani,Zhong Wenhui,Liu Xia,Zhou Anqi,Li Xun

Amoxicillin (AMO), a penicillin antibiotic, and ciprofloxacin (CIP), a quinolone antibiotic, are widely used to combat bacterial infections and are frequently co-administered to enhance therapeutic efficacy. However, improper use of AMO and CIP may lead to antibiotic residues in the environment, posing serious threats to human health. The visual detection of AMO and CIP remains significant challenges. Herein, the Eu-DPA@CQDs was used for the dual-mode detection of AMO and CIP, which was synthesized by CQDs doped in europium-DPA metal-organic framework. In the colorimetric mode, the catalase-mimicking Eu-DPA@CQDs oxidized TMB to blue oxTMB. Upon addition of AMO, the oxTMB was reduced, causing color fading. Subsequent introduction of CIP restored nanozyme activity, regenerating the blue signal and enabling dual-analyte antibiotic detection. In the fluorescence mode, the Eu-DPA@CQDs probe exhibited dual emission at 440 nm and 613 nm. Upon AMO addition, the fluorescence at both wavelengths was quenched, accompanied by a color change from red to purple. In the presence of CIP, the emission at 440 nm increased and redshifted to 490 nm, while the signal at 613 nm was quenched, resulting in a multicolor transition from red to cyan. The Eu-DPA@CQDs sensor enabled rapid and dual-mode detection of AMO and CIP. The colorimetric method exhibited wide linear ranges of 0.005–25 μM for AMO and 0.007–4.25 μM for CIP, with detection limits of 1.67 nM and 3.75 nM, respectively. A visible color transition from dark blue to colorless was observed with increasing AMO concentration, while the addition of CIP reversed the signal back to dark blue. Similarly, the fluorescence detection achieved wide linear ranges from 0.005 to 30 μM for AMO and 0.005 to 15 μM for CIP, with detection limits as low as 4.74 nM and 3.11 nM, respectively, also within only 1 min. As the concentration of AMO increased, the color shifted from red to purple. In contrast, increasing CIP concentration induced a color transition from red to cyan. These color transitions were both clearly visible to the naked eye. The sensor demonstrated excellent selectivity and anti-interference capability, providing a reliable platform for accurate, sensitive, and quantitative determination of both antibiotics in real samples.
