Nitrogen-doped biochar assists rapid electron transfer at the ZnCdS/CoMoO4 interface to enhance photocatalytic hydrogen production

Ziyu Li,Mei Li,Meijuan Ding,Xianglong Lyu,Jingyi Nie,Zhiliang Jin

s The interphase charge carrier transport rate in the photocatalytic H 2 evolution reaction represents one of the parameters influencing the photocatalytic hydrogen generation performance. Sunflower straw, which is considered as farm waste and urea to prepare N-doped biochar (NC) co-catalysts, and construction of a composite catalyst ZnCdS/CoMoO 4 –8/5 %NC for photocatalytic hydrogen production by in situ growth of CoMoO 4 and biochar loaded on ZnCdS. Using 10 vol% lactic acid as the sacrificial reagent, the composite catalyst produced 701 μmol of hydrogen over 5 h of photocatalysis. This yield represents 8.09-fold and 64.03-fold enhancements compared to pure ZnCdS and CoMoO 4 , respectively. Raman spectroscopy analysis revealed that the periphery of the carbon framework in the biochar after N-doping was perturbed, thereby generating additional active sites for the photocatalytic H 2 evolution reaction. Through density-functional theory simulations and photoelectrochemical analyses, the introduction of NC was found to enhance photogenerated carrier migration. The ZnCdS/CoMoO 4 –8/5 %NC composite system forms a Z -scheme heterojunction, wherein heterojunction construction and biochar mediation synergistically promote directional migration of photogenerated charge carriers and enhance interfacial charge separation efficiency in the composite catalyst. The strategy of converting agricultural waste into efficient co-catalysts for resource recycling provides a new approach for the application of biochar in photocatalysis.

Constructing P-CoMoO4@NiCoP heterostructure nanoarrays on Ni foam as efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting

Ning You,Shuai Cao,Mengqiu Huang,Xiaoming Fan,Kun Shi,Haijian Huang,Zhangxian Chen,Zeheng Yang,Weixin Zhang

Improving catalytic activity and durabilty through the structural and compositional development of bifunctional electrocatalysts with low cost, high activity and stability is a challenging issue in electrochemical water splitting. Herein, we report the fabrication of heterostructured P-CoMoO 4 @NiCoP on a Ni foam substrate through interface engineering, by adjusting its composition and architecture. Benefitting from the tailored electronic structure and exposed active sites, the heterostructured P-CoMoO 4 @NiCoP/NF arrays can be coordinated to boost the overall water splitting. In addition, the superhydrophilic and superaerophobic properties of P-CoMoO 4 @NiCoP/NF make it conducive to water dissociation and bubble separation in the electrocatalytic process. The heterostructured P-CoMoO 4 @NiCoP/NF exhibits excellent bifunctional electrocatalysis activity with a low overpotential of 66 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for HER and 252 mV at 100 mA cm −2 for OER. Only 1.62 V potential is required to deliver 20 mA cm −2 in a two-electrode electrolysis system, providing a decent overall water splitting performance. The rational construction of the heterostructure makes it possible to regulate the electronic structures and active sites of the electrocatalysts to promote their catalytic activity.

MOF-derived cobalt oxides nanoparticles anchored on CoMoO4 as a highly active electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction

Suhang Xun,Yan Xu,Jingjing He,Deli Jiang,Rong Yang,Di Li,Min Chen

Developing highly efficient and earth-abundant electrocatalysts for water oxidation is highly desirable for sustainable energy conversion applications. In this work, we designed and constructed a novel integrated ternary hybrid composed of CoO/Co 3 O 4 (CoO x ) nanoparticles supported on CoMoO 4 nanorods (CoO x /CoMoO 4 ) through a hydrothermal treatment of ZIF-67/CoMoO 4 followed by a thermal annealing. Benefiting from the enlarged surface areas, more active sites and fast charge transfer kinetics resulted from the interface between CoO x and CMO, the CoO x /CMO electrocatalyst manifests the excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic performance with a low overpotential of 253 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 and high long-term durability, which is superior to those of most previously reported Co- or Mo-based oxides electrocatalysts. This work not only provides a highly efficient catalyst for OER but also sheds light on the fabrication of ternary Co-based hybrid electrocatalyst by using ZIF-67 as a precursor.

Facile synthesis of N, S co-doped CoMoO4 nanosheets as high-efficiency electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction

Wang Jie,Xuan Haicheng,Meng Lingxin,Yang Jiangtao,Yang Jiale,Liang Xiaohong,Li Yuping,Han Peide

The development of low-cost and high-efficiency hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts has become extremely essential to address global energy issues. Herein, we have fabricated arrays of nitrogen and sulfur co-doped CoMoO 4 ultrathin nanosheets grown on nickel foam (N, S-CoMoO 4 /NF 400 ). The experimental results demonstrate that modulating the electronic structure of CoMoO 4 by co-doping N and S atoms is one of the most powerful methods to boost the performance of HER. N, S-CoMoO 4 /NF 400 displays superior HER activity under alkaline environment, with overpotentials of 58 and 119 mV at 10 and 100 mA cm −2 . The excellent performance of the N, S-CoMoO 4 /NF 400 electrode proves that the N, S co-doping engineering can significantly improve the catalytic activity of transition metal-based oxide HER.

Achieving superior lithium storage performances of CoMoO4 anode for lithium-ion batteries by Si-doping dual vacancies engineering

Xuejia Wang,Ting Su,Yunan Luo,Lijun Quan,Linping Zhong,Ruizhi Li,Ting Zhou,Mengjiao Liu,Yan Zhao,Xin Lai,Jian Bi,Daojiang Gao

Regarded as a promising anode material, CoMoO 4 can reveal higher theoretical capacity (980 mAh g −1 ) in the context of completely reversible electrochemical reaction. Unfortunately, the large volume expansion, low conductivity and inferior cyclic stability are non-negligible, which have greatly limited its further development and application. Herein, a series of CoMo 1- x Si x /2 O 4-2 x ( x  = 0, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2 and 0.25) anode materials have been successfully synthesized through a solid-state method. This heterovalent atom doped strategy can not only provide cationic vacancy (Mo vacancy) but also generate anionic vacancy (O vacancy). The results demonstrate that all the Si doped CoMoO 4 samples exhibit superior electrochemical performances than that of the pure CoMoO 4 although the produce of the dual vacancies has negligible influence on the microstructures of CoMoO 4 , which should be attributed to the synergistic effect of the Mo vacancy and O vacancy and thus leading to the lower optical band gap, the enhanced conductivity and the faster transport of lithium ions and electron. Particularly, when the content of Si-doping is set as 0.05, the obtained CoMo 0.9 Si 0.05 O 3.8 sample displays the highest capacity (847.4 mAh g −1 ) up to 300 cycles at a current density of 200 mA g −1 . This work paves an effective strategy for constructing dual vacancies to promote the electrochemical performance of transition metal oxide anode materials.

Shape-controlled synthesis of CoMoO4@Co1.5Ni1.5S4 hybrids with rambutan-like structure for high-performance all-solid-state supercapacitors

Chao Wang,Zhishu Guan,Yanbin Shen,Shuhui Yu,Xian-Zhu Fu,Rong Sun,Ching-Ping Wong

Hybrid-structured nanoparticles have demonstrated superior chemical, physical or electrochemical properties over a single component owing to the synergistic effects from each component. Here we report on rambutan-like cobalt molybdate@nickel cobalt sulfides (CoMoO 4 @Co 1.5 Ni 1.5 S 4 ) hybrids for electrochemical energy storage which are synthesized on Ni foam by a facile hydrothermal method . CoMoO 4 microspheres are directly grown on the Ni foam as the core and Co 1.5 Ni 1.5 S 4 nanorods grown in sequence in shape of branches. This exceptional structure is beneficial for rapid electron transport and fast diffusion of ions owing to the existence of vast channels. Consequently, this hybrid electrode material exhibits an overall improved capacitive performance, including a high specific capacitance of 1405 F g −1 at the current density of 1 A g −1 and an excellent cyclic stability (92% retained after 1000 cycles at 10 A g −1 ). In addition, an all-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor is fabricated which exhibits a high specific capacitance of 221.3 F g −1 collected at 1.5 A g −1 , and a high energy density of 127.86 W h kg −1 is gained at a power density of 2003.88 W kg −1 . After rapid charging (3 s), two such all-solid-state devices in series light a red light-emitting diode over 10 min. Thus, our work provides a remarkable candidate for energy storage and conversion devices.

Self-supported Fe-doped CoMoO4 nanoarray as high-efficiency electrocatalyst for the electrochemical reduction of nitrite to ammonia

Xuan Zhang,Xuguang An,Jing Zhang,Qian Liu,Lisi Xie,Zhao Li,Xiaolei Li,Weitang Yao,Qingquan Kong

Self-supported Fe–CoMoO 4 /NF nanosheets were fabricated. • The optimized catalyst delivers an ammonia yield of 44.6 ± 0.12 mg −1  cm −2 and high FE of 98.77 ± 0.23% at −0.8 vs. RHE. • The electrocatalytic mechanism was investigated. • Zn- NO 2 − battery with Fe-CoMoO 4 /NF as cathode were tested. The electrochemical reduction of nitrite to ammonia (NO 2 − RR) plays a pivotal role in closing the nitrogen cycle and mitigating nitrogenous pollution. Herein, we report a self-supported, Fe-doped CoMoO 4 nanosheet electrode grown on nickel foam (Fe-CoMoO 4 /NF), via a scalable hydrothermal-immersion strategy. Benefiting from Fe-induced electronic modulation and retention of the robust, hierarchical nanosheet architecture, the optimized Fe-CoMoO 4 /NF delivers an exceptional NH 3 yield of 44.6 ± 0.12 mg h −1  cm −2 with an ultrahigh Faradaic efficiency of 98.77 ± 0.23% at −0.8 V vs. RHE. In-situ differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) coupled with density functional theory (DFT) calculation results reveal that NO 2 − reduction on Fe–CoMoO 4 /NF proceeds through nitric oxide-related intermediates, followed by sequential proton-coupled electron transfer steps toward NH 3 formation. When integrated into a Zn−NO 2 − battery, the catalyst enables a remarkable peak power density of 16.9 mW cm −2 , surpassing the performance of most previously reported electrocatalysts for NO 2 − RR. Fe-doped CoMoO 4 nanosheet self-supported on nickel foam enables highly efficient and selective electrocatalytic reduction of nitrite to ammonia, achieving an exceptional NH 3 yield of 44.6 ± 0.12 mg h −1  cm −2 and an ultrahigh Faradaic efficiency of 98.77 ± 0.23% at −0.8 V vs. RHE in neutral solution. Inorganic–Organic Synergistic Ternary Composite Film Materials for High-Performance Flexible Sensors: CoMoO4-Enhanced Polyaniline/Poly(butylene succinate)

Jie Song,Yi Mu,Shuang Yu

In order to reduce the pollution of electronic waste, mixed-acid doped polyaniline (TSPANI) was prepared via in situ solution polymerization. TSPANI and cobalt molybdate (CoMoO4) were then blended with a poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) solution to fabricate a degradable polymer composite with favorable inorganic–organic synergistic conductive properties, denoted as CoMoO4/TSPANI/PBS. The successful preparation of PANI, TSPANI, and CoMoO4 was confirmed by UV–vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). CoMoO4 and TSPANI/PBS are combined through intermolecular forces, and their overall performance is enhanced via an “inorganic–organic bidirectional synergistic effect”. The addition of an appropriate amount of CoMoO4 improves the thermal stability performance of the film and at the same time improves the electrical conductivity of the film; when the addition of CoMoO4 is 3%, the semicircular arc diameter is the smallest, which indicates that the charge transfer resistance is the smallest and the electrical conductivity is the best when the addition of CoMoO4 is 3%. As the film is bent and twisted, the film still has excellent electrical conductivity and degrades up to 27.6% in 42 days by enzymes and up to 28.2% by soil. In human motion detection, as the human joints change, the sensor can capture the changes well and give the corresponding current response. The formation of this composite material can be used as a substitute for nondegradable polymers, which reduces e-waste pollution and is of great significance in terms of environmental protection.

Regulating the d-band center of Ru/CoMoO4 ternary heterostructure by interface engineering for accelerated hydrogen adsorption kinetics

Miao Ma,Min Yang,Cai-Yue Zhang,Hai-Yi Sun,Rong-Jing Su,Xiao-Rui Yue,Chen-Xi Li,Yong-Ming Chai,Bin Dong

Developing low-cost, high-performance Ru-based hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts is crucial for advancing anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) technology. In this study, based on the Sabatier principle, a Ru/CoMoO 4 heterojunction catalyst with a ternary “nanorod-macroparticle-microparticle” structure is designed. Benefiting from the strong electronic interactions, a lower d-band center of Ru/CoMoO 4 is observed, resulting in optimal adsorption between Ru species and the key H* intermediates to greatly enhance the hydrogen desorption kinetics. Importantly, this interface engineering effect prevents the Volmer-Tafel step from becoming rate-limiting step, thereby promoting electron and mass transport. As a consequence, Ru/CoMoO 4 outperforms most of the reported HER catalysts at an ultra-low Ru loading of only 0.2 wt%. In alkaline media, it only requires an overpotential of 55 mV to achieve 100 mA cm −2 , with a low Tafel slope of 16 mV dec -1 , and operates stably for over 230 h at an industrial-grade current density of 1000 mA cm -2 . The AEMWE electrolyzer based on the Ru/CoMoO 4 catalyst achieves efficient and stable hydrogen production at 1000 mA cm⁻ 2 @ 1.93 V. This work not only provides a high-performance catalyst, but also elucidates a strategy for precisely controlling d-band center through heterojunction interface engineering to optimize reaction [email protected]

3D cross-linked structure of dual-active site CoMoO4 nanosheets@graphite felt electrode for vanadium redox flow battery

Tukang Cheng,Shaotian Qi,Yingqiao Jiang,Zemin Feng,Long Jiang,Wei Meng,Jing Zhu,Lei Dai,Ling Wang,Zhangxing He

Transition metal oxides (TMOs) can accelerate the sluggish kinetics of vanadium redox reaction, but face challenges like limited active sites and difficulties in nanometerization, highlighting the urgent need for new TMO electrocatalysts for vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB). CoMoO 4 features high electrochemical activity, numerous redox sites, flexible control, and short electron pathways. Herein, a high catalytic and super stable graphite felt electrode modified in situ with network cross-linking CoMoO 4 nanosheets (CoMoO 4 @GF) was prepared via hydrothermal and heat treatment method to enhance VRFB performance. CoMoO 4 @GF have large specific surface area, super hydrophilicity, and abundant reaction places, possessing well mass transfer, low charge transfer resistance, and sufficient catalytic sites. Therefore, the composite electrodes exhibit great electrocatalytic activity towards VO 2+ /VO 2 + and V 3+ /V 2+ redox reactions and excellent stability for VRFB. At 200 mA cm −2 , the energy efficiency ( EE ) of the CoMoO 4 @GF modified VRFB improved by 19.14 % over the blank VRFB with pristine graphite felt, and remained cycle stable after 350 cycles at 150 mA cm −2 . This work not only enriches the types of TMOs catalysts in VRFB, but also opens up a new direction for the research of bimetallic TMOs.

Qin Li,Yanli Li,Jing Zhao,Shihang Zhao,Jiaojiao Zhou,Chen Chen,Kai Tao,Rui Liu,Lei Han

The rational control of metal-organic frameworks derived hollow nanomaterials with rapid mass transport and multiple active metal sites are desirable for emerging energy storage. Herein, CoMoO 4 hollow microplate array on Ni foam is prepared via a facile self-sacrificing templated strategy from ion-exchange of cobalt-organic framework microplate array. Benefiting from hollow microplate structure constructed by ultrathin nanosheets , CoMoO 4 as binder-free electrode for supercapacitor delivers ultrahigh areal capacitance/capacity (12.2 F cm −2 /6120 C cm −2  at 2 mA cm −2 ), superior rate property (82.2% at high current density of 50 mA cm −2 ) and excellent cycling stability (90.5% retention after 5000 cycles). Moreover, an asymmetric supercapacitor device is assembled by using CoMoO 4 as positive electrode and activated carbon as negative electrode , achieving high energy density of 0.321 mWh cm −2  at power density of 1.7 mW cm −2 and superior capacitance retention of 96.0% over 5000 cycles. Importantly, a blue light-emitting diode can be illuminated 2 min, indicating a great potential for practical applications. These excellent results demonstrate that this efficient strategy can extend to prepare various bimetallic oxides arrays with hollow and hierarchical microstructure for high-performance supercapacitors .

Synergistic engineering of architecture and composition in NixCo1−xMoO4@CoMoO4 nanobrush arrays towards efficient overall water splitting electrocatalysis

Zekun Li,Mingyue Zheng,Xian Zhao,Jun Yang,Weiliu Fan

Implementing the hierarchical structures of non-noble-metal-based electrocatalysts and modulating their composition can help accelerate surface reactions and fulfill the promise of renewable energy devices via water splitting. Herein, molybdenum-based compounds are constructed on activated nickel foam (act-NF) by a one-step hydrothermal growth. The product generated on the act-NF is NixCo1−xMoO4@CoMoO4, with a novel 3D hierarchical heterostructure, wherein the one-dimensional CoMoO4 nanorods are hierarchically integrated with the two-dimensional NixCo1−xMoO4 nanosheets (NCMO@CMO/act-NF). The formation of NixCo1−xMoO4@CoMoO4 attributes to the release and diffusion of Ni2+ from act-NF. Heterogeneous NixCo1−xMoO4@CoMoO4 has compositional differences, and synergistic interaction between cobalt and nickel results in the modulated electronic states. Meanwhile, the hierarchical structure facilitates the exposure of active sites. Combining these two advantages, NCMO@CMO/act-NF presents a low η10 value of 61 and 180 mV in 1.0 M KOH for the HER and OER, respectively, and it shows a low cell voltage of 1.46 V for overall water splitting with robust stability. DFT calculations reveal that Ni doping leads to the charge depletion of Co, which further optimizes the d-band center of metal sites and tunes the adsorption of adsorbates to facilitate the water splitting reaction. Thus, a promising strategy of incorporating the nanostructure design with compositional modulation is presented to develop functional materials for energy conversion.
