Polarization anisotropy losses due to morphological instability in CsPbX3 nanorods and strategies for mitigation

Michael Ng,Sunil B. Shivarudraiah,Jonathan E. Halpert

CsPbX3 perovskite nanorods are known to display polarized emission, but also suffer from morphological and spectral instability. Here we synthesized CsPbX3 nanorods with polarized emission across the visible emission spectrum. We find that polarized emission is a function solely of the aspect ratio, as would be expected based on a purely dielectric effect. We then observe changes over time in the emission spectrum and polarization anisotropy as a function of the morphology. We find that, although these perovskite nanorods exhibit strongly polarized emission after synthesis, they suffer from serious morphological instability that reduces the polarization anisotropy over time. Worryingly, nanorods dispersed in anhydrous solvents, and even in a polymer matrix were observed to degrade in both inert environments and under ambient conditions. This results in a significant loss in polarized emission, and represents a problem for many intended applications. Finally, we evaluate several strategies for protecting these particles and find that silica encapsulation can be used to successfully prevent loss of polarized emission even under ambient conditions.

Spectral Tuning of Efficient CsPbBrxCl3–x Blue Light-Emitting Diodes via Halogen Exchange Triggered by Benzenesulfonates

Fanghao Ye,Huijun Zhang,Pang Wang,Jinlong Cai,Liang Wang,Dan Liu,Tao Wang

CsPbX3 nanocrystal (NC)-based blue perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) are still in a backward position while their green and red counterparts have achieved significant progress in the past few years. The emission spectrum of perovskite NCs can be manipulated via the ratio control of halides in precursor or halogen exchange of NCs. Herein, CsPbBrxCl3–x NCs are synthesized in ambient condition. With tetrabutylammonium p-toluenesulfonate (TBSA) added as the ligand during the purification process of as-synthesized perovskite NCs, bromine in NCs is substituted by chlorine and the spectrum undergoes a blue shift, whereas chlorine is exchanged by bromine in NCs and the spectrum undergoes a red shift by introducing sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDSA) as the ligand. The origin for halogen exchange can be attributed to the synergistic effects of the anion and cation of benzenesulfonates. The photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of NCs increases from 7% to 81% due to the effective passivating effects of the strong ionic sulfonate heads, and the blue PeLEDs prepared by this method show a promising external quantum efficiency of 2.6%. Our work provides a new approach into spectral tuning of efficient blue PeLEDs.

Enabling Multicolor Information Encryption: Oleylammonium-Halide-Assisted Reversible Phase Conversion between Cs4PbX6 and CsPbX3 Nanocrystals

Yongfei Li,Yujiao Wang,Qing Sun,Jiaoyi Ning,Liang Li,Jiakai Liu,Daliang Zhang,Ke Xin Yao

Recently, halide perovskites have been recognized for their thermochromic characteristics, showing significant potential in information encryption applications. However, the limited luminescence color gamut hinders the encryption of complex multicolor information. Herein, for the first time, multicolor thermochromic perovskites with luminescence covering the entire visible spectrum have been designed. Oleylammonium halide salts facilitate a reversible phase transformation between nonluminescent Cs4PbX6 nanocrystals (NCs) and luminescent CsPbX3 NCs upon heating or cooling. This process occurs without the need for external addition or removal of ligands or metal salts, enabling efficient and intelligent information encryption. A proof-of-concept demonstration successfully encrypts and decrypts multicolor digital information. This work not only advances the understanding of phase transformations in perovskites but also highlights their significant potential for information encryption applications.

Heterostructural CsPbX3-PbS (X = Cl, Br, I) Quantum Dots with Tunable Vis–NIR Dual Emission

Xianju Zhang,Xianxin Wu,Xiaoyu Liu,Gaoyu Chen,Yongkai Wang,Jianchun Bao,Xiangxing Xu,Xinfeng Liu,Qi Zhang,Kehan Yu,Wei Wei,Jingjing Liu,Jun Xu,Hua Jiang,Peng Wang,Xun Wang

Perovskite and chalcogenide quantum dots (QDs) are important nano semiconductors. It has been a challenge to synthesize heterostructural QDs combining perovskite and chalcogenide with tailorable photoelectronic properties. In this report, heterostructural CsPbX3-PbS (X = Cl, Br, I) QDs were successfully synthesized via a room temperature in situ transformation route. The CsPbX3-PbS QDs show a tunable dual emission feature with the visible and near-infrared (NIR) photoluminescence (PL) corresponding to CsPbX3 and PbS, respectively. Typically, the formation and evolution of the heterostructural CsPbBr3–PbS QDs with reaction time was investigated. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) was applied to illuminate the exciton dynamics in CsPbBr3–PbS QDs. The mild synthetic method and TAS proved perovskite to PbS energy transfer may pave the way toward highly efficient QD photovoltaic and optoelectronic devices.

Shiliang Mei,Bobo Yang,Xian Wei,Hanqing Dai,Zhihao Chen,Zhongjie Cui,Guilin Zhang,Fengxian Xie,Wanlu Zhang,Ruiqian Guo

All-inorganic CsPbX3(X = Cl, Br, and I) perovskite quantum dots (QDs), an emerging type of luminescent materials, have drawn extensive attention in recent years. However, the amelioration of their stability is becoming a critical issue. Herein, we present a facile and efficient approach to prepare novel perovskite QDs/metal–organic frameworks (CsPbX3/ZIF-8) composites under ambient-atmospheric conditions. The obtained composites exhibit better properties including high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields (QYs) (41.2% for green and 34.8% for red), narrow-band emission (20 nm for green and 31 nm for red), and enhanced stability in comparison to bare QDs. Furthermore, their application in a remote-type white-light-emitting device was explored and a wide color gamut (~137% of the National Television System Committee standard) was achieved, verifying that these novel luminescent composites have great prospect in backlight display application. Keywords:perovskite quantum dots;all-inorganic;ZIF-8;composite;wide-color-gamut display

TOP-Zn Steric Hindrance Effect Enables Ultra-Uniform CsPbX3 Quantum Dots for Wide-Color Gamut Displays

Xinyi Lv,Yuqin Su,Hengyang Xiang,Linxiang Yang,Xinrui Chen,Yifei Wang,Kun Zhang,Jiahao Tang,Yuhui Ye,Bo Cai,Xueying Ma,Xiaoyong Wang,Haibo Zeng

Perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) are expected to be an ideal candidate for wide-color gamut displays owing to their high color purity. However, their color purity is challenged by remarkable spectral broadening due to non-uniform size distribution and crystal defects. Here, a ligand-ion (TOP-Zn) complex-modulating nucleation strategy is proposed to depress spectral broadening. This is achieved by enhancing the steric hindrance effect during lead-halogen octahedral assembly and reducing the reaction activity/sites of the system. This strategy is universal and has been confirmed to be effective for blue, green, and red PQDs, achieving narrowed spectral full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) of 15, 17, and 25 nm, respectively. These FWHMs are record-breaking and contribute to a wide color gamut coverage of ≈130% National Television Standards Committee and ≈100% Rec. 2020 standard. Meanwhile, these PQD-based light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) exhibit a high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of exceeding 20% at their pure color range. These results provide a feasible path to achieve ultra-uniform and pure-color luminescent PQDs for wide-color gamut displays.

Design of BaTiO3@CsPbX3 core-shell composites as dielectric-luminescent coupling materials for flexible ACEL displays

Shiwen Liu,Junyu Hong,Minghao Wang,Zupeng Liu,Youwang Long,Yuefei Xiang,Zaidong Chen,Lei Zhong,Titao Jing,Lei Zhou

Flexible electroluminescent displays represent a significant advancement beyond rigid technologies like LCDs, yet alternating current electroluminescent (ACEL) devices face limitations in color performance and brightness. This study introduces an innovative dielectric-luminescent coupling material, BaTiO 3 @CsPbX 3 (PeBTO), designed to enhance the color and brightness performance of flexible ACEL displays. The core-shell architecture synergistically combines the high dielectric constant of BaTiO 3 with the tunable narrow-band luminescence of perovskite quantum dots. When integrated into ZnS-based ACEL devices, PeBTO optimizes electric field distribution, which not only significantly increases the dielectric constant (from 4.41 to 28.71) but also enhances the luminance by approximately 121%. Leveraging a photoconversion mechanism, PeBTO enables multicolor displays by absorbing ZnS blue electroluminescence and re-emitting green/red light. Fully flexible devices demonstrate stable multicolor emission under mechanical deformation (folding, twisting, stretching), showcasing enhanced brightness and reliable color output. This work contributes to the development of efficient, flexible displays with synergistic dielectric-luminescent regulation.

Superior single-mode lasing in a self-assembly CsPbX3 microcavity over an ultrawide pumping wavelength range

Guoen Weng,Guoen Weng,Jiyu Yan,Shengjie Chen,Chunhu Zhao,Hanbing Zhang,Jiao Tian,Yuejun Liu,Xiaobo Hu,Jiahua Tao,Shaoqiang Chen,Shaoqiang Chen,Shaoqiang Chen,Shaoqiang Chen,Ziqiang Zhu,Hidefumi Akiyama,Junhao Chu,Junhao Chu

All-inorganic perovskite micro/nanolasers are emerging as a class of miniaturized coherent photonic sources for many potential applications, such as optical communication, computing, and imaging, owing to their ultracompact sizes, highly localized coherent output, and broadband wavelength tunability. However, to achieve single-mode laser emission in the microscale perovskite cavity is still challenging. Herein, we report unprecedented single-mode laser operations at room temperature in self-assembly CsPbX3 microcavities over an ultrawide pumping wavelength range of 400–2300 nm, covering one- to five-photon absorption processes. The superior frequency down- and upconversion single-mode lasing manifests high multiphoton absorption efficiency and excellent optical gain from the electron–hole plasma state in the perovskite microcavities. Through direct compositional modulation, the wavelength of a single-mode CsPbX3 microlaser can be continuously tuned from blue-violet to green (427–543 nm). The laser emission remains stable and robust after long-term high-intensity excitation for over 12 h (up to 4.3×107 excitation cycles) in the ambient atmosphere. Moreover, the pump-wavelength dependence of the threshold, as well as the detailed lasing dynamics such as the gain-switching and electron–hole plasma mechanisms, are systematically investigated to shed insight into the more fundamental issues of the lasing processes in CsPbX3 perovskite microcavities.

Silica Aerogel-Encapsulated CsPbX3 Nanocrystals: A Robust Platform with Enhanced Optical Performance for Next-Generation Displays

Xihui Pan,Xuan Zhang,Jun Xiong,Duzheng Liao,Zihong Li,Pingru Sun,Ni Zhang,Jiakai Liu,Wang Zhang

All-inorganic halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) exhibit outstanding optoelectronic properties, yet their practical applications in wide-color-gamut displays are severely constrained by inherent stability. Here, we developed a robust encapsulation strategy for CsPbX3 NCs using low-cost silica aerogels (AGs) through an improved low-temperature molten-salt sintering method. During sintering, the aerogel pore structure partially collapses, mechanically sealing the NCs within a rigid inorganic framework. Subsequent alkaline treatment leads to the in situ formation of a PbBr(OH) secondary shell, providing an additional chemical protection layer. Owing to this dual-encapsulation architecture, the resulting CsPbBr3@AGs(OH) composites exhibit intense green emission with a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 91%, together with remarkable resistance to moisture, heat, and high-intensity irradiation. Notably, the corresponding polymer film retained 97.6% of its initial luminance after 1000 h of continuous blue-light exposure at 300W/m2. By extending this strategy, blue- and red-emitting CsPbX3@AGs composites covering the 443–659 nm range are achieved, enabling an ultrawide-color-gamut coverage of 132.85% NTSC and 99.2% Rec.2020. This work provides a universal, low-cost, and scalable encapsulation platform that simultaneously delivers an excellent optical performance and long-term stability, paving the way for next-generation display applications.

In situ polymerization-prepared water-stable CsPbX3/PMMA composites for water-stimulated anti-counterfeiting and bioimaging

Rong Huang,Xiaoman Xiang,Danxia Zheng,Geyu Feng,Xinyu Ge,Rongze Zhu,Peng Chen,Xueling Chang,Xiao-Chun Hang,Xiaoyang Qi,Longfei Ruan

A modified method achieves in-situ synthesis of water-stable CsPbBr 3 /PMMA composites. • Pb O coordination bonds and Si-O-C covalent bonds enable a stable structure. • The composites remain fluorescently stable after 30 days of water immersion. • CsPbBr 3 /PMMA composites achieve dynamic anti-counterfeiting in water. • Excellent biocompatibility enables 24 h fluorescence imaging in osteosarcoma cells. Halide perovskite nanocrystals (HPNCs) exhibit exceptional optoelectronic properties but suffer from poor stability in polar environments and potential toxicity, limiting their practical applications in information anti-counterfeiting, data encryption, and biological fields. Combining HPNCs with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) can provide a strategy to construct CsPbBr 3 /PMMA composites that exhibit enhanced structural stability and tunable emission. This work reports an improved facile room-temperature ligand-assisted re-precipitation strategy for the in situ synthesis of CsPbBr 3 /PMMA composites with a silane-mediated protective shell, which significantly enhances the optical performance with a high PLQY of up to 86.0%, tunable emission wavelength ranging from 463 nm to 619 nm and photoluminescence average lifetimes spanning from 70.5 ns to 155.9 ns. PMMA bridges CsPbBr 3 and the silane agent by forming Pb O coordination bonds with Pb 2+ on the crystal surface and Si-O-C covalent bonds with the silane's Si O groups, thereby generating a dual-layer inert protective shell of PMMA and SiO 2 around the crystal that passivates surface defects and enhances structural stability of the composite. In addition, the CsPbBr 3 /PMMA composites exhibit excellent stability in water, ethanol, phosphate buffer saline (PBS), and Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's Medium (DMEM), particularly retaining over 90.0% of initial emission after 30 days in water, which enables a water-stimulated anti-counterfeiting application, displaying a “VICTORY” signal. Furthermore, the CsPbBr 3 /PMMA composites demonstrate high cell viability (>90.0% at 1000 μg/mL) and effective fluorescence imaging after 24 h in osteosarcoma cells. This work can be extended to other HPNCs, realizing stable optoelectronic devices for applications in advanced anti-counterfeiting and biological fields. A modified in-siu synthesis method produces CsPbBr 3 /PMMA composites that remain optically stable in water for over 30 days and are suitable for water-stimulated anti-counterfeiting and clear biological imaging. A novel bifunctional short-chain fluoroammonium ligand boosts conductivity, luminescence and stability of CsPbX3 quantum dots

Changbo Deng,Yu Zhang,Yuchen Zhou,Shulin Han,Lei Cai,Qiuping Huang,Zhengping Fu,Yalin Lu

Cesium lead halide perovskite quantum dots (CsPbX 3 QDs) exhibit outstanding optoelectronic properties but suffer from structural instability and luminescence degeneration. The long-chain ligands widely adopted to stabilize CsPbX 3 QDs exhibit poor charge transport due to their weak binding and insulating nature, which is unfavorable for optoelectronic applications. To address this, we developed a novel short-chain fluoroammonium ligand, octylammonium fluoride (OTAmF), for the post-treatment of CsPbX 3 QDs. The fluoride ions (F − ) in OTAmF effectively passivate bromine vacancies, whereas the short-chain ammonium cations enhance surface passivation and carrier transport. This strategy significantly improved the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of green-emitting CsPbBr 3 QDs from 56.8 % to 96.4 %, doubled their thin-film conductivity, and dramatically enhanced their photostability, thermal stability, and long-term storage stability. The approach was successfully extended to blue- (CsPbBr 1.8 Cl 1.2 ) and red-emitting (CsPbBr 0.8 I 2.2 ) QDs, universally increasing their PLQY and stability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that, compared with OA (0.73 eV) and OAm (0.27 eV), OTAmF has a superior binding energy (1.74 eV) and enhanced charge transfer and defect passivation capabilities. This OTAmF post-treatment strategy provides a promising pathway for developing high-performance optoelectronic devices based on perovskite QDs.

Super-hydrophobic CsPbX3 (X=Cl, Br, I) perovskite nanocrystals membranes based on bionic lotus leaf interface

Hongwei Xu,Yang Chen,Leilei Kuai,Chengjun Liu,Jianjun Zhao,Quan Liu,Bo Wei,Junpeng Xue,Zutao Fan

Metal halide perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs), particularly all-inorganic CsPbX 3 (X = Cl, Br, I), exhibit exceptional optoelectronic properties, positioning them as revolutionary materials for LEDs, displays, and photodetectors. However, their commercialization is impeded by environmental instability under moisture, heat, and light. To address this, we introduce a solvent-induced surface rheological engineering (SISRE) strategy to fabricate super-hydrophobic CsPbX 3 -PS composite membranes inspired by the lotus leaf effect. Key innovation lies in controlled spraying of a THF/ethanol mixture (3:1 v/v) onto the membrane surface. THF selectively dissolves surface PS to induce micro/nano hierarchical roughness, while ethanol triggers rapid polymer re-solidification. By modulating spray passes (5–15 cycles), we achieved tunable hydrophobicity with contact angles increasing from 70° to >140° (Cassie-Baxter state), while maintaining PLQY∼72% for CsPbBr 3 PNCs membrane. The optimized super-hydrophobic membrane (12 spray cycles) nearly exhibited a 2.7-fold enhancement in water stability (PLQY decay rate: 1.65%/day vs. 4.46%/day for untreated films). In addition, when applied as a down-conversion layer on blue LEDs (λ peak  = 452 nm), the device achieved 111% NTSC color gamut coverage (98% Rec.2020) with CIE coordinates (0.328, 0.288) and CCT = 5722 K. This work provides a scalable, appliable route to concurrently enhance environmental stability and optoelectronic performance of PNCs.
