A nanozyme-based enhanced system for total removal of organic mercury and SERS sensing

Hao Liu,Yue Guo,Yunxin Wang,Huidan Zhang,Xiaowei Ma,Sisi Wen,Jing Jin,Wei Song,Bing Zhao,Yukihiro Ozaki

Total removal of organic mercury in industrial wastewater is a crucially important task facing environmental pollution in the current world. Herein, we demonstrate the fabrication of Au-NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH)/rGO nanocomposite as not only an efficient nanozyme with oxidase-like activity but also an efficient surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate to determine organic mercury, with the minimum detection concentration as low as 1 × 10 −8 M. According to the binding energy of X-Ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) and the free radicals of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra, the mechanism of catalytic enhanced degradation is the production of Au-amalgam on Au surface, accelerating the electron transfer and the generation of O 2 •– radicals from oxygen molecules and •CH 3 radicals from the methyl group in MeHg to participate the oxidase-like reaction. Furthermore, the Au-NiFe LDH/rGO nanocomposite is able to degrade and remove 99.9% of organic mercury in two hours without the secondary pollution by Hg 2+ . In addition, the material can be used for the multiple degradation-regeneration cycles in actual applications, which is significant in terms of the environmental and economic point of view. This work may open a new horizon for both highly sensitive detection and thorough degradation of organic mercury in environmental science and technology .

Synergistic coupling of NiFe-layered double hydroxide nanosheets with Co-doped porous interconnecting carbon frameworks for efficient bifunctional electrocatalysis

X. Yin,Y.-N. Hua,Z. Gao

The design of low-cost and durable electrocatalysts with high catalytic performance of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is crucial for the development of sustainable energy technologies. NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) is a promising electrocatalyst for OER, but the poor ORR activity limits its large-scale application as a bifunctional electrocatalyst in energy storage and conversion devices. The rational design of hierarchical nanohybrids is an effective strategy to construct bifunctional OER/ORR electrocatalysts. Herein, a high-performance OER/ORR bifunctional non-noble metal electrocatalyst (NiFe-LDH/CoNC-PIN) was projected. The Co-doped carbon frameworks with porous interconnecting networks (CoNC-PIN) is prepared by pyrolysis of ZIF-8/67 via a salt template strategy, followed by the uniform in situ growth of ultrathin NiFe-LDH nanosheets on CoNC-PIN to construct the hierarchical NiFe-LDH/CoNC-PIN hybrid. The molten NaCl template in pyrolysis activates the surface of ZIF-8/67 and connects them into porous carbon networks to improve the surface area, porosity and electronic conductivity of catalysts. Due to the efficient electron transfer and strong coupling between CoNC-PIN and NiFe-LDH, the NiFe-LDH/CoNC-PIN exhibits a small OER overpotential of 249 mV at 10 mA/cm 2 , a low Tafel slope of 27.7 mV/dec, an ORR half-wave potential of 0.80 V, and excellent durability and structural stability. This strategy provides a novel insight to fabricate advanced OER/ORR bifunctional non-noble metal electrocatalysts.

Amorphous/crystalline NiFe LDH hierarchical nanostructure for large-current-density electrocatalytic water oxidation

Yilong Li,Mingzhe Li,Chenxuan Xie,Ziyu Ling,Yuzhen Lv,Kepi Chen

Amorphous structure shows more catalytic active sites but poor conductivity towards oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we fabricated a novel three-dimensional (3D) self-supported NiFe layered double hydroxides (LDH) catalytic material with amorphous/ crystalline interface, aiming to obtain both excellent catalytic activity and conductivity. This homogeneous hierarchical structure exhibits a high catalytic activity and robustness, giving the industrially required current density of 1000 mA cm −2 at an ultralow overpotential of 359.8 mV with 240-hour stability in 1 M KOH. In-situ electrochemical tests reveal that the amorphous/crystalline interface boosts the intermediates evolution and OER kinetics, which might be ascribed to considerable active sites and fast charge transfer. Moreover, the 3D structure has unique superhydrophilicity and superaerophobicity, which can further accelerate the electrolyte penetration, facilitate the bubbles desorption from the electrode, enhance mass transport, and thus improve OER performance at large current densities. This work provides a feasible way to develop high-performance electrocatalytic material via constructing homogeneous amorphous/crystalline interface.

Effects of Cationic and Anionic Defects on NiFe LDH in Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution

Xintong Li,Yizhe Liu,Qidi Sun,Zhuowen Huangfu,Wei-Hsiang Huang,Zilong Wang,Chu-Chen Chueh,Chi-Liang Chen,Zonglong Zhu

Electrocatalytic water splitting is a promising method to generate high-purity hydrogen, yet its efficiency is limited by the large energy barrier of the counter oxygen evolution reaction (OER). NiFe-layered double hydroxides (NiFe LDHs) are considered as promising electrocatalysts, and some studies have indicated that the involved cationic and anionic defects can further promote their electrocatalytic activities. Nevertheless, the inherent relationships between the defective structures and catalytic activities are still unclear. In this work, by alkaline corrosion of NiFeZn LDH and NaBH4 activation, we involved cationic and anionic defects, respectively. In addition, they both promote the electrocatalytic activity of NiFe LDH in OER, and the co-defected NiFe LDH (cd-NiFe LDH–NaBH4) only needs a low overpotential of 205 mV to obtain a current density of 10 mA cm–2. We invested the exact effects of cationic and anionic defects by electrochemical characterizations and X-ray adsorption structure. The results indicate that the effects of cationic and anionic defects are different, and the cationic defects could promote the oxidation process of Ni species in OER, thus facilitating the favored lattice oxygen mechanism routine, while the anionic defects could enhance the reactivity of Fe sites by creating partially filled antibonding states of Fe–O. Our research reveals the origin of the accelerating effects brought by defective sites in NiFe LDH for OER and provides a facile approach to enhance the catalytic properties of noble metal-free electrocatalysts toward OER.

NiFe LDH/MXene Derivatives Interconnected with Carbon Fabric for Flexible Electromagnetic Wave Absorption

Zihan Wang,Liuxin Yang,Yang Zhou,Chen Xu,Mi Yan,Chen Wu

Cross-linking network structures are critical to construct flexible and lightweight electromagnetic (EM) wave absorbers, for which effective regulation of the EM parameters is essential. Herein, a versatile strategy has been developed by interconnecting carbon fibers with NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH)/MXene derivatives. The large-sized flaky morphology and conductive nature of the interconnectors induce the percolation effect in the fabric networks with ultralow addition. As such, efficient adjustment of the EM parameters can be achieved by tuning the content of the interconnectors around the percolation threshold, giving rise to an optimal reflection loss (RL) of −58.0 dB and a wide effective absorption band (EAB) of 7.0 GHz at a thickness of 2.5 mm under the incorporation of 7.0 wt % NiFe LDH/MXene. This work provides insights on constructing percolation networks and effective manipulation of electronic and magnetic properties, which can be extended to various areas such as sensing, catalysis, and energy storage.

Heterostructural engineering of Ni3S2/NiFe-LDH/NF electrocatalyst for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction

Qiao Biyan,Fu Qiang,Huang Liqiu,Cai Guangxu,Wu Hengyi

Preparing cheap, stable and effective electrocatalytic for oxygen evolution catalysts is urgent. A two-step hydrothermal method was applied to synthesis the heterostructural catalyst of Ni 3 S 2 /NiFe-LDH/NF in this study. The experiment demonstrates that Ni 3 S 2 could grow on the edges of NiFe-LDH. At 100 mA·cm − 2 , the Ni 3 S 2 /NiFe-LDH/NF shows 264 mV overpotential for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) which is lower than that of NiFe-LDH/NF and Ni 3 S 2 /NF. The electrochemical analysis shows that the heterostructure in Ni 3 S 2 /NiFe-LDH/NF could increase the effective charge transfer, active sites and adjusts the adsorption-desorption energy of OER performance. Also, the Ni 3 S 2 /NiFe-LDH/NF showed long-term stability, which is a candidate for water electrolysis applications in practice. Graphical

Efficient catalytic decomposition of ozone by flake NiFe-LDH with multiple acidic sites

Ruixin Mao,Fengyu Li,Yingzhi Bu,Weijing You,Jiaqi Li,Jiamin Qi,Liyao Pu,Ping Ning,Yixing Ma,Xueqian Wang

Due to the high level of near-surface ozone pollution, catalytic technology has become an important research direction in the field of ozone removal. Layered double hydroxides catalysts have become a hot spot in current research due to their unique mechanism of action. In this study, a nickel–iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH-A-T) catalyst with multiple acidic sites and flaked structure was developed by an alcohol treatment followed by roasting process, which exhibited superior ozone decomposition activity under high humidity and high weight-space–time velocity (WHSV) conditions. The results showed that the catalytic decomposition efficiency of NiFe-LDH-A-T for 100 ppm ozone was still as high as 90 % at RH = 80 % and SV = 1000 L/g/h. At the same time, this study analyzed the morphological structure of NiFe-LDH-A-T and the structure- activity relationship of its high activity was constructed by combining XRD, TEM, SEM, XPS, and FT-IR characterization. On this basis, the mechanism of the acidic sites in NiFe-LDH-A-T in the ozone decomposition process was revealed. This experiment provides a new idea for studying ozone decomposition catalysts and a new possible way to solve the problem of near-surface ozone pollution.

Electrochemiluminescence immunosensor for thiamethoxam detection using NiFe-LDH-loaded Cu single-atom catalysts

Chen Rui,Pang Chaohai,Ma Xionghui,Wu Xuejin,Liu Chunhua,Yin Guihao,Zhang Zhenshan,Li Shuhuai

An ECL signal amplification strategy is introduced leveraging a multimetallic catalytic amplification effect. Nickel–iron bimetallic oxide compounds were synthesised and loaded with Cu SAs catalysts on their surface to create nickel–iron layered double hydroxides/copper single atoms (NiFe-LDHs/Cu-SAs) with robust catalytic properties. These NiFe-LDHs/Cu-SAs were employed as signal amplification elements to modify gold electrodes. C-dots labelled with thiacloprid DNA aptamers were used as the signal and molecular recognition elements to construct an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunosensor. The NiFe-LDHs/Cu-SAs significantly amplified the ECL signal of the C-dots, enhancing the sensitivity of the sensor. Upon capturing thiamethoxam via the aptamer, the ECL signal was effectively quenched, demonstrating the potential of this approach as a highly sensitive method for thiamethoxam detection. The excellent catalytic performance of NiFe-LDHs/Cu-SAs amplified the detection signal over 20-fold, while the aptamer improved the specificity of the sensor for thiamethoxam recognition. The method demonstrates a linear range of 2–6000 × 10 −12  mol/L and a detection limit of 6.52 × 10 −13  mol/L, with recoveries of 90%–110% for real sample analysis. This study demonstrates a highly sensitive and specific method for thiamethoxam detection, with real-world applicability, while highlighting an innovative multimetallic catalytic strategy that can facilitate advancements in sensor design across various fields. ZIF-8-derived porous carbon nanofibers anchoring NiFe-LDH for efficient oxygen evolution

Yiting Cheng,Mingming Ding,Bin He,Gaigai Duan,Chunmei Zhang,Xiaoshuai Han,Shuijian He,Shaohua Jiang

The sluggish kinetics of the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) severely limits the overall efficiency of water electrolysis. To overcome this critical bottleneck, we designed a self-supporting composite electrocatalyst by growing Ni-Fe layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) nanosheets on zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) derived N doped porous carbon nanofibers (NCNFs). The in-situ pyrolysis process creates a dense, highly conductive mesoporous network within the carbon framework. Meanwhile, the vertical growth of NiFe-LDH helps alleviate catalyst agglomeration, thereby increasing active site exposure and accelerating mass transportation during reactions. Consequently, the optimized electrode exhibits excellent catalytic performance, achieving a low overpotential of 216 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , a Tafel slope of 62.3 mV dec −1 , and sustained long-term stability over 50 h at 50 mA cm −2 under the tested laboratory condition. Crucially, comprehensive density functional theory calculations rationalize the enhanced electrocatalytic kinetics by revealing strong interfacial electronic coupling. This unique electronic redistribution optimally upshifts the d band center of the active metal sites and significantly lowers the energy barrier of the rate-determining step from 2.14 eV to 1.56 eV. This work provides deep mechanistic insights and a feasible structural engineering strategy for developing highly efficient bimetallic electrocatalysts for future sustainable energy conversion applications.

Revealing the facet-dependent dynamic reconstruction of NiFe-LDH for enhanced water oxidation

Yinbo Lou,Meichen Pan,Jiao Wang,Jinghong Wen,Chuanlang Zhan,Yang Yang

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) limits water electrolysis efficiency, partly because active surfaces restructure under bias. This work reveals how crystal facets govern this operando reconstruction in NiFe-layered double hydroxides. By a temperature-controlled post-calcination strategy that preserves morphology and composition, either the (202) or (204) facet is selectively enriched, isolating crystal orientation as the sole variable. Using in situ Raman spectroscopy, the (202) facet is shown to reconstruct to active NiOOH at a much lower onset potential than the (204) facet. Density functional theory reveals that the (202) facet has a d-band center closer to the Fermi level and a higher density of states, optimizing intermediate adsorption and lowering the reaction barrier. Consequently, the (202)-rich catalyst exhibits a smaller Tafel slope and a 3.2-fold higher turnover frequency, outperforming commercial IrO 2 . Key advances include decoupling facet effects from morphological confounders and establishing facet-resolved electronic descriptors that predict OER activity.

Reinforcement of electrocatalytic overall water splitting by constructing Mo-doped NiFe LDH/NiS heterostructure

Zehui Liu,Jinzhao Huang,Feng Jiao,Ke Zhang,Guixin Zhao,Xiaolong Deng

Electrochemical water splitting is considered to be an environmentally friendly and efficient method of hydrogen production. NiFe LDH is a well-known electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution, yet its effectiveness in HER has been suboptimal. In this research, we created a Mo-NiFe LDH@NiS catalyst on carbon cloth via cation doping and heterointerface construction of NiFe LDH. The resulting Mo-NiFe LDH@NiS/CC showed remarkable HER activity. Furthermore, when used as a bifunctional electrode for overall water splitting, Mo-NiFe LDH@NiS/CC operated at a cell voltage of 1.58 V at a current density of 10 mA/cm² and exhibited outstanding durability. This study emphasizes the significant enhancement in HER and overall water-splitting efficiency of NiFe LDH achieved through Mo doping and heterostructure engineering, advancing its potential for effective water splitting applications.

In-Site Growth of Efficient NiFeOOH/NiFe-LDH Electrodes: A Streamlined One-Step Methodology

Jing Ning,Li Xu,Wei Xu,Guizhen Li,Wen Zhang

Oxygen evolution reactions (OER) are often the decisive step in determining the water electrolysis rate. The first row of transition metals and their derivatives, represented by Ni and Fe, have attracted much attention due to their excellent OER performance. Here, we develop a one-step strategy for preparing oxygen-evolving electrodes, in which the NiFeOOH-modified NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) nanosheet is supported by nickel foam. At 100 mA·cm−2, the overpotential of NiFeOOH-NiFe-LDH was just 227 mV, and the duration times were over 200 h in 1 mol·L−1KOH. Furthermore, the co-existence of LDH and hydroxyl oxides helps the oxygen evolution reaction. These results suggest the potential for this synthesis strategy to provide a low-cost, highly active OER electrocatalyst for industrial water splitting.
