Faced with the large amount of oily wastewater with complex compositions generated from petrochemical, food, and other industries, traditional separation technologies often struggle to simultaneously achieve high efficiency and economic feasibility. Therefore, the development of novel separation materials and methods is urgently required. In this study, inspired by mussel chemistry, a commercial PVDF membrane was modified to achieve superhydrophilicity via a one-step co-deposition strategy. Dopamine was used to initiate the polymerization of the SBMA monomer and form covalent bonding, while its excellent adhesive property enabled the construction of a stable PDA/SBMA synergistic interfacial layer. After the introduction of abundant zwitterionic groups onto the membrane surface, a stable hydration layer was formed, endowing the membrane with pronounced superhydrophilicity and creating an oil-repelling interface underwater, thereby imparting excellent underwater superoleophobicity. Various characterization techniques were employed to systematically investigate the morphology, elemental composition, wettability, and antifouling properties of the membranes before and after modification. By optimizing the SBMA content, the prepared superhydrophilic membrane exhibited a minimum water contact angle of 26°, and the pure water flux increased by 22.6 times compared with the pristine membrane. The membrane also demonstrated high permeation flux for various oil-in-water emulsions (exceeding 2200 L m −2 h −1 at 0.05 MPa) and high separation efficiency (up to 99.5% under gravity-driven conditions). In addition, the membrane showed excellent chemical stability in strong acidic and alkaline environments, as well as good salt resistance and corrosion resistance. This study provides a theoretical basis for enhancing membrane separation performance through the synergistic modification of polydopamine and zwitterionic polymers.

A novel P–N–Si coflame retardant comprising bio-based phytic acid/melamine–coated SiO 2 (PM@SiO 2 ) was designed. The effects of a combination of a 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO)-derived compound (PN-DOPO) with PM@SiO 2 on the flame retardancy and thermal decomposition of WPU were investigated. Compared with pure WPU, the WPU/PN-DOPO/PM@SiO 2 composites possessing different PM@SiO 2 addition amounts demonstrated enhanced flame retardancy. The addition of 5 wt% PM@SiO 2 and 9 wt% PN-DOPO increased the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of pure WPU from 19.0% to 29.4%, and the resulting material achieved a V-0 rating in the UL-94 test. Furthermore, the peak heat release rate (pHRR), total heat release (THR), and fire growth index of WPU/9%PN-DOPO/5%PM@SiO 2 considerably decreased by 36.1%, 29.1%, and 41.9%, respectively. The excellent flame retardancy is attributed to the ability of PM@SiO 2 to effectively repair defects in the char layer formed by the gas-phase PN-DOPO flame retardant via its silica-cross-linked network. Moreover, the initial thermal decomposition temperature of WPU/9%PN-DOPO/5%PM@SiO 2 increased from 229.6°C to 260.1°C. Moreover, the tensile strength and storage modulus were considerably enhanced. This study presents a new research paradigm for developing environmentally friendly flame-retardant WPUs based on green and synergistic multimechanistic strategies.

The work designed and synthesized a block copolymer emulsifier composed of hydrophilic segments (acrylic acid) and hydrophobic segments (methyl methacrylate) via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Using this emulsifier as a stabilizer, polymer emulsions were successfully prepared through emulsion polymerization, forming stable latex particles. The emulsion was applied to cotton fabrics, forming a hydrophobic coating with micro-nano rough structures on their surfaces. Results showed that the static water contact angle of the treated fabrics significantly increased to over 110°, reaching 130°, demonstrating excellent water repellency. Furthermore, this system is entirely fluorine-free, avoiding environmental and health hazards associated with traditional fluorinated compounds. The covalent bonding of the RAFT emulsifier to the polymer chain effectively suppresses emulsifier migration, enhancing the durability and stability of the coating. This work provides a viable technical pathway for developing green, efficient, fluorine-free water-repellent finishing agents.

Although spray polyureas are the most widely applied and commercialized choice, too short operable time and too high requirement on specialized equipment limit the expanding of applications. Powder coating technology is therefore chosen in this study for polyureas with high toughness and high melting temperature. A series of biobased polyurea coatings derived from 1,6-diaminohexane, 1,10-diaminodecane, and urea were first prepared by a four-step approach from melting polycondensation, wet-method pulverization, electrostatic spraying, and then to infrared baking. The structure of the polyureas has been verified via NMR and FTIR spectra, and the GPC results further confirmed that the polyureas possess high molecular weight. The particle size of the polyurea powder is approximately 20 μm. The obtained coatings have high gloss (90–110 GU), transparency, and smoothness, as well as excellent flexibility (1 mm rod) and impact resistance (100 kg cm). The results in neutral salt spray tests show that all polyurea coatings except PUr-10 exhibit excellent corrosion resistance, with all corrosion widths much less than 3 mm, and no significant change is observed on undamaged coatings after the tests. The coatings also possess outstanding UV aging, acid, and alkali resistance. Such polyurea powder coatings developed in this study have extremely high application value in fields of explosion-proof and chemical engineering equipment.

Ion-exchange membrane chromatography (IEMC) is a promising alternative to conventional resin-based systems for bioseparation, offering advantages in throughput, pressure drop, and compatibility with continuous processing. However, challenges related to membrane morphology, functional ligand distribution, and scalability remain. In this study, we present a one-step fabrication approach to prepare cellulose acetate (CA)-based anion-exchange membranes by incorporating low-molecular-weight poly(ethylene imine) (PEI, M w ~10,000) and epichlorohydrin (ECH) crosslinker into the casting solution, followed by phase separation via a modified NIPS/VIPS method. The influence of PEI molecular weight and crosslinker type on membrane morphology, porosity, permeability, and binding performance was systematically evaluated. SEM analysis revealed that low-Mw PEI produced a homogeneous sponge-like structure, favorable for prolonged solute interaction, while high-Mw PEI ( M w ~750,000) led to dense or irregular morphologies. Among the tested crosslinkers, ECH yielded membranes with the highest flux, high porosity, and strong structural stability. FTIR and EDS analyses confirmed the successful incorporation of amine functional groups. When tested using a single-pass tangential flow filtration (SPTFF) system, the optimized CA-PEI-ECH membrane demonstrated superior BSA retention (up to 85.66%) and a sustained dynamic binding capacity over time compared to a previously studied 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) functionalized CA membrane and non-functionalized supports. Finally, scale-up was achieved using a pilot-scale casting system, which produced membranes with consistent structure and performance. This work offers a practical and scalable route to fabricate high-performance IEMC membranes suitable for modern, continuous bioseparation processes.

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA), a type of bio-based polyester, exhibits numerous outstanding characteristics. However, it suffers from a low breaking elongation. In this research, poly(butylene succinate-co-cyclohexanedimethylene succinate) (PBCS) was synthesized. This polymer contains cyclohexane rings and has a limited crystallization capacity. PBCS was integrated into PLA to produce PLA/PBCS blends with heightened ductility. The incorporation of PBCS has the potential to boost the cold crystallization ability of PLA. Although the thermal decomposition temperatures of the blends experience a slight decline, they remain significantly higher than the processing temperature. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicates that PLA has a certain degree of compatibility with PBCS. When the PBCS content reaches 30 wt%, the blend demonstrates high tensile strength (47 MPa) and a breaking elongation of 260%. Moreover, PBCS serves to lower the complex viscosity of PLA. At the same time, the complex viscosity of the blend shows greater stability with variations in temperature. Compared with poly(butylene succinate) (PBS), PBCS has better compatibility with PLA, and PLA/PBCS blends have higher elongation at break due to the poor crystallization ability and the conformational transition of the cyclohexane rings of PBCS.

The treatment of semi-coking wastewater generated during the semicoke production process has long been a bottleneck restricting the development of the coal chemical industry. The Fenton reaction is recognized as one of the most effective strategies for addressing water pollution; however, the susceptibility to mineralization and poor reusability of highly active catalysts has limited their practical application. Herein, a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) doped with oleic acid modified Mn 2 O 3 @Mn 5 O 8 (Mn 2 O 3 @Mn 5 O 8 -OA) composite fiber membrane was prepared via melt-blown spinning and blending using a melt-blown pilot setup. This composite was employed to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of semi-coking wastewater, achieving a maximum chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency of 72.4%. Material characterization confirmed successful catalyst immobilization and enhanced surface properties. Theoretical calculations provided molecular-level insights into the adsorption behavior of phenol and its degradation intermediates. The TPU-based membrane significantly improved catalyst stability and reusability while maintaining high catalytic activity, offering an effective strategy for advanced oxidation processes in complex wastewater treatment.

Photochromic materials can absorb specific wavelengths of light, thereby exhibiting photochromic effects. Among various photochromic materials, TiO 2 has garnered significant attention due to its abundance, eco-friendliness, and non-toxicity. However, most TiO 2 -based photochromic materials require doping or modification to achieve their photochromic properties, and the photochromic performance of pure TiO 2 is typically limited to solvents. To address this challenge, uniformly sized (~5 nm) and well-crystallized TiO 2 NPs were prepared through a simple reflux method, followed by surface modification with butanol. The synthesized TiO 2 NPs were characterized using XRD, FTIR, and TEM. XRD and TEM confirmed their anatase phase composition, while FTIR results indicated the successful grafting of butanol groups onto the surface of TiO 2 NPs. Subsequently, the nanoparticles were dispersed in ethanol, demonstrating significant photoresponse under ultraviolet irradiation and rapid recovery to their initial color upon exposure to air. To overcome the limitation of solvent-dependent color change, the nanoparticles were incorporated into P(HEA-AM) hydrogel, which initially exhibited excellent optical transparency. The solvent molecules retained within the hydrogel synergistically enabled the photochromic performance of the TiO 2 NPs. The microstructure, photochromic properties, mechanical performance, and photochromic mechanism of the resulting photochromic hydrogel were systematically characterized and analyzed. UV–vis results revealed that the light transmittance of the hydrogel decreased from an initial 90% to 16%, demonstrating its excellent light modulation capability. Based on its superior photochromic performance, the feasibility of its practical applications, such as information storage, was explored. Under ultraviolet irradiation, P(HEA-AM)-TiO 2 could clearly display targeted printed content.

This study reports the design and synthesis of a novel amide-functionalized monofunctional benzoxazine (TaPBA) and its incorporation into epoxy resin to develop high-performance thermosetting networks with significantly enhanced overall properties. The structure of TaPBA was proved by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance ( 1 H NMR). The curing behavior of EP-TaPBAresins wereanalysed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and FT-IR, revealing that TaPBA played a positive role in reducing the curing temperature of EP-TaPBA resins. Meanwhile, the enlarged free volume within the crosslinked polymer network effectively suppressed dielectric polarization, resulting in reduced dielectric constant and dielectric loss. However, the addition of TaPBA also reduced the initial decomposition temperatures ( T 5% and T 10% ) and glass transition temperature ( T g ) of EP-TaPBA resins. In conclusion, this research conducted a detailed analysis on the curing behavior, thermal stability and dielectric properties of TaPBA-modified epoxy resins, which has certain reference value for related work.

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation has emerged as a transformative technology for sustainable seawater desalination. While significant advancements have been made in enhancing evaporation rates through material selection and architectural optimization, mitigating parasitic heat loss remains a critical technical bottleneck. In this work, we present a hierarchically structured, self-floating multilayer evaporator utilizing carbon fiber paper (CP) functionalized with polyaniline (PAN) and carbon black (CB) as the photothermal layer. The designed architecture leverages a delignified wood (DW) block as an efficient hydrophilic water-pumping scaffold, coupled with a modified hydrophobic carbon paper (CP@PAN-CB) to effectively localize heat and suppress downward conduction to the bulk water. Systematic investigation reveals that the sequential doping of PAN followed by CB creates a synergistically high-dispersion interface that bolsters light-harvesting efficiency. Under one-sun irradiation (1 kW m −2 ), the evaporator attains a stable surface temperature of approximately 65°C within 60 s and achieves a peak evaporation rate of 1.593 kg m −2 h −1 in seawater. Furthermore, the system demonstrates exceptional long-term stability with negligible salt crystallization over continuous 8-h testing. This work highlights the potential of gradient hydrophilicity and optimized photothermal functionalization for robust and efficient solar-driven water purification.

The development of high-performance polybenzoxazole (PBO) materials relies on novel AB-type monomers to overcome challenges in stoichiometric control and enhance material processability. However, significant challenges remain in the molecular structure innovation and efficient synthesis of such monomers. This study successfully developed a novel AB-type self-condensing monomer based on a benzimidazole structure—2-(3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl)-5-carboxylic acid-1 H -benzimidazole (ACBP). Starting from 3,4-diaminobenzoic acid and 3-nitro-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, the monomer was efficiently synthesized through cyclization condensation and reduction reactions. This method offered advantages such as simplicity, environmental benignity, and low energy consumption, and achieved a high yield. Experimental results demonstrated that ACBP exhibited excellent storage stability. Furthermore, the monomer was subjected to a programmed temperature-controlled polycondensation reaction in polyphosphoric acid and successfully yielded poly[2,5-(1 H -benzimidazol-2-yl)benzoxazole] (ABPBIO) with an intrinsic viscosity as high as 5.9 dL/g. The structures of the monomer and polymer were systematically characterized using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC–MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), which confirmed their molecular configurations. Performance studies revealed that ABPBIO not only possessed outstanding thermal stability, with 5% weight-loss temperatures ( T 5% ) of 551.6°C in air and 615.2°C in N 2 , and char yields of 44.1% and 76.6%, respectively, surpassing those of similar materials reported in the literature, but also exhibited good gas-phase water adsorption capabilities. Based on these superior properties, the polymer shows promising potential for specialized applications in fields such as firefighting and chemical protection.

CFRP composites face limited application due to weak interfacial bonding, especially for ultrahigh modulus carbon fibers (CFs) with a tensile modulus exceeding 500 GPa. In this study, a novel approach involving the grafting of octaaminopropyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (OA-POSS) nanoparticles onto ultrahigh modulus CFs was developed to optimize the interfacial bonding with ultrahigh modulus CF and epoxy resin (EP). Comprehensive characterization demonstrated that OA-POSS modification significantly altered the physicochemical structure of the fiber surface; for example, surface roughness increased from 10.3 to 18.1 nm, and the O/C ratio increased significantly from 0.060 to 0.232, confirming the successful introduction of abundant polar functional groups by OA-POSS. The CF-POSS/EP composites exhibited a peak compressive strength of 282.60 MPa (at 3 wt% POSS) and an interlaminar shear strength of 63.05 MPa (at 2 wt% POSS), corresponding to improvements of 31.50% and 20.70%, respectively, over the untreated samples. The performance improvement stems from OA-POSS nanoparticles forming covalent bonds via reactive amino groups, enhancing mechanical interlocking through increased surface roughness, and acting as a stress-relief interphase to promote crack deflection and energy dissipation. This altered the failure mechanism from interfacial separation to matrix internal cracking, enabling more efficient stress transfer across the interface.
