Graphite braced Multi-scale Porous SiOC/Sn Ceramics as Novel Anode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Yiling Quan,Xiwen Xia,Peifeng Feng,Wanru Lin,Xuedong Wu,Mingguang Zhang,Kun Liang,Yujie Song,Xigao Jian,Jian Xu

To improve the conductivity and porosity of polymer derived SiOC ceramics, we incorporated graphite into the Sn-containing SiOC precursor (SG), thereby constructing multiscale porous architectures. The introduction of graphite has a dual effect. Firstly, it stabilizes the foam structure of the polymer, and secondly, it acts as a carbon source, promoting the carbothermal reduction of Sn oxide, releasing more gas, and leading to the formation of micropores. As a result, the specific surface area increases from 31 m 2 g -1 to 68 m 2 g -1 . The excellent electrical conductivity of graphite and the more stable porous structure brought by the introduction of graphite enhanced the electrochemical performance of the material as an anode, enabling SG to exhibit a high specific capacity of 412.3 mA h g -1 at 1 A g -1 while maintaining an outstanding rate performance. Moreover, the material retains a capacity of 341.3 mA h g -1 even after enduring 1000 cycles at a current density of 1 A g -1 , demonstrating remarkable cycling stability. The integration of polymer-derived SiOC ceramics with graphite to construct a multi-scale porous strategy paves the way for the practical use of advanced lithium-ion batteries.

Low-density, large-sized SiCnw/SiOC composite aerogels with excellent thermal insulation, microwave absorption, and thermostability

Xinlei Jia,Zihan Zhou,Donghui Guo,Baolu Shi,Ning Zhou,Baosheng Xu

Polymer-derived ceramic aerogels are promising materials for thermal insulation and microwave absorption in harsh environments because their microstructures can be controlled at the molecular level. Silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) aerogels are considered as potential high-temperature electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbers, but their application range is limited by complex preparation process and unsatisfactory microwave-absorption performance. This paper reports a new SiC nanowire/SiOC composite aerogel (SCA) synthesized through the sol–gel process, environmental pressure drying, and high-temperature treatment. The SCA performance is adjusted by controlling the ratio of SiC nanowires, obtaining low thermal conductivities (0.04–0.042 W m −1  K −1 ) and excellent mechanical properties (4.37–5.45 MPa). Increasing the SiC nanowire content gradually increases the EMW absorption capacity of SCA. The optimal reflection loss is −53.64 dB and the effective absorption bandwidth is 3.88 GHz, substantially higher than that of SiOC aerogels . This high performance is mainly attributable to the appropriate impedance matching characteristics and strong polarization loss ability. Moreover, the performance of the composite aerogels was retained after long-term treatment in an air environment at 800 °C. SCA also exhibits excellent high-temperature insulation and flame retardancy. Owing to its light weight, strong microwave-absorption ability, good thermal insulation performance, and oxidation resistance , SCA is a highly promising alternative material for use in extreme environments.

Polymer-derived Co2Si@SiC/C/SiOC/SiO2/Co3O4 nanoparticles: Microstructural evolution and enhanced EM absorbing properties

Yongfeng Wu,Yunwang Zhong,Yan Guan,Chong Gu,Guangyu Shao,Benyang Shi,Zhiming Su,Binbin Xu,Zhaoju Yu,Anhua Liu

In this work, porous core-shell structured Co 2 Si@SiC/C/SiOC/SiO 2 /Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles were fabricated by a polymer-derived ceramic approach. The in situ formation of mesopores on the shell, microstructural, and phase evolution of resulting nanoparticles were investigated in detail. The obtained nanoparticles-paraffin composites possess a very low minimum reflection coefficient (RC min ) −60.9 dB, broad effective absorption bandwidth 3.50 GHz in the X-band and 15.5 GHz in the whole frequency range (from 2.5 to 18 GHz). The results indicate outstanding electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing performance among all the reported cobalt-based nanomaterials, due to the reasons as follows: (a) The unique core-shell structure as well as complex phase composition of SiC/C/SiOC/SiO 2 /Co 3 O 4 in the shell, result in a large number of heterogeneous interfaces in the nanoparticles; (b) Nanoparticles have both dielectric and magnetic loss; (c) Mesopores in the shell prolong the propagation path of EMW, thereby increasing the absorption/reflection ratio of EMWs. Thanks to the material structure design, the resulting core-shell structured cobalt-containing ceramic nanoparticles have great potential for thin and high-performance EMW absorbing materials applied in harsh environment.

Robust and thermostable C/SiOC composite aerogel for efficient microwave absorption, thermal insulation and flame retardancy

Dongdong Yang,Shun Dong,Jianqiang Xin,Chen Liu,Peitao Hu,Liansen Xia,Changqing Hong,Xinghong Zhang

Carbon aerogel (CA) has been generally regarded as a potential electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorber, but unsatisfactory microwave absorption, mechanical and anti-oxidation properties are still the primary challenges for its application. Herein, a novel C/SiOC composite aerogel (CSA) was successfully synthesized by a simple copolymerization of dual sols, ambient pressure drying and thermal treatment process for the first time. The morphology and performance of the as-prepared CSA could be tailored just by controlling the initial ratio of silane and phenolic resin (PR) to adjust the content of SiOC in CSA, whose density was in the range of 0.252 to 0.294 g·cm −3 with a low thermal conductivity from 0.061 to 0.067 W·m −1 ·K −1 . Notably, the EMW absorption capacity of CSA was greatly enhanced with the increase of SiOC content, with the optimal reflection loss (RL ) value of −67.85 dB and effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 6.88 GHz, which was dramatically improved than CA (–22.89 dB, 5.34 GHz) and mainly ascribed to the optimized impedance matching characteristics and strong attenuation capacity. Meanwhile, compared with CA (2.63 MPa) with a density of 0.248 g·cm −3 , the mechanical properties of CSA (3.30–5.12 MPa) were also remarkably improved, and the maximum compression strength was nearly doubled. Furthermore, CSA obtained superior oxidation resistance than CA and exhibited excellent flame-retardant properties. All the results indicated that CSA could be considered as a highly promising candidate for applications in extreme environments due to its lightweight, high strength and outstanding microwave absorption capacity along with good oxidation resistance, superior thermal insulation performance and high flame retardancy.

Prussian blue–derived CoNi bimetallic decoration of SiOC ceramics with enhanced dielectric attenuation for broadband microwave absorption

Cunxian Wang,Jimei Xue,Hanjun Wei

CoNi–SiOC ceramics were fabricated from Prussian blue via pressureless sintering with a polysiloxane precursor. • Heat-induced CoNi decomposition formed carbon nanowires and multiphase interfaces enhancing EM loss mechanisms. • Outstanding EM absorption was achieved with an RL min of − 50.3 dB and EAB of 5.6 GHz, confirmed by RCS reduction. Prussian blue offers compositional precision for constructing transition‑metal nanostructures; however, their integration into polymer‑derived ceramics (PDCs) for high‑frequency electromagnetic (EM) attenuation remains underexplored. Herein, a Prussian blue‑derived CoNi coordination framework is incorporated into a polysiloxane (PSO) precursor and converted into CoNi–SiOC ceramic via pressureless sintering. With increasing heat-treatment temperature, the CoNi gradually decomposed. Co catalyzed the formation of carbon nanowires (CNWs), while Ni species reacted with the SiOC matrix to form Ni 2 Si and generate Co x Ni 1-x , SiC, and SiO 2 , which were precipitated from the ceramic matrix, leading to the construction of a multiphase, multiscale heterogeneous interfacial architecture. Notably, the CoNi–SiOC ceramic (CNS-3) treated at 1100 °C showed outstanding EM wave attenuation capability. A minimum reflection loss of − 50.3 dB was obtained at a thickness of 2.35 mm, while an effective absorption bandwidth of 5.6 GHz was achieved when the thickness ranged from 2.35 to 2.45 mm, completely spanning the Ku band. In addition, radar cross-section (RCS) simulations based on CST revealed a reduction of up to 17.25 dB m 2 , highlighting the strong potential of CoNi–SiOC ceramics for EM stealth applications. Deposition Temperature-Driven Structural Evolution and Wet-Oxygen Corrosion Behavior of a-SiOC Coatings on Optical Fibers

Rong Tu,Haodong He,Jiangxin Yang,Qingfang Xu,Chitengfei Zhang,Tenghua Gao,Song Zhang,Takashi Goto,Lianmeng Zhang

HighlightsUniform and dense a-SiOC coatings were successfully prepared on optical fibers by PECVD, demonstrating the feasibility of direct amorphous ceramic coating deposition on silica fibers with good interfacial adhesion.Revealed the temperature-driven evolution mechanism of a-SiOC coatings in a PECVD HMDS/Ar/O2system.Clarified the differentiated failure modes and mechanical property variations of a-SiOC coatings in 500–900 °C wet-oxygen.Optical fiber sensors deployed in harsh industrial fields, e.g., high-temperature wet-oxygen, face severe challenges in signal attenuation and mechanical degradation. While amorphous silicon oxycarbide (a-SiOC) coatings offer a promising solution due to their adjustable thermo-mechanical properties, balancing their structural density with environmental stability remains a critical technical bottleneck. In this study, a-SiOC coatings were deposited on optical fibers using hexamethyldisilane (HMDS) and trace oxygen via radio-frequency capacitively coupled plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). A systematic investigation was conducted to determine the impact of deposition temperature (70–420 °C) on the precursor dissociation kinetics, microstructural evolution, and corrosion resistance of the coatings. An elevation in temperature promotes the elimination of organic terminal groups (–CH3, –H) and enhances surface diffusion, driving the coating from a loose, carbon-rich “polymer-like” structure (dominated by Si–C bonds) to a dense, inorganic “silica-like” skeleton (dominated by Si–O–Si bonds). High-temperature corrosion tests in a wet-oxygen environment (500–900 °C) demonstrate that the failure mechanism is highly dependent on deposition temperature. Coatings deposited at low temperatures suffer catastrophic cracking due to pronounced oxidative shrinkage and the release of volatile species, whereas coatings deposited at 420 °C exhibit microcracking caused by severe carbon phase separation and stress concentration within the rigid inorganic network. In the present system, 350 °C is identified as the optimal deposition temperature, as it achieves the best balance of network densification and structural flexibility, while exhibiting the best mechanical performance.

Fabrication and characterization of Al2O3-3YSZ@SiOC core–shell structure for Al2O3f/Oxide composites with tunable electromagnetic protection

Zhaoxu Sun,Guangping Song,Hongming Zhang,Yusen Xie,Zhiyao Lu,Jinze Zhang,Xiaodong He,Yuelei Bai

Continuous alumina fiber-reinforced oxide composites (Al 2 O 3f /Oxide) are considered highly promising electromagnetic protection carrier materials for aerospace applications due to their excellent thermal stability, high strength, thermal insulation capability, and porous loadable structure. In this work, Al 2 O 3 -3YSZ@SiOC- n C ceramic spheres with a core–shell structure were prepared via a polymer-derived ceramic route. Subsequently, a continuous aluminosilicate fiber (AF18)/Al 2 O 3 -3YSZ@SiOC- n C composites were successfully fabricated by integrating the ceramic spheres with AF18 fibers through a hot-pressing process. Their microstructure, phase composition, thermal properties, and electromagnetic protection performance and mechanisms were systematically investigated. Benefiting from the synergistic effects of multiple components, the AF18/Al 2 O 3 -3YSZ@SiOC-1C composites exhibit excellent electromagnetic wave absorption (EWA) performance, with a minimum reflection loss of −43.07 dB at 9.5 GHz and a thickness of 2.6 mm, accompanied by an effective absorption bandwidth of 3.5 GHz. By adjusting the carbon content, the composites successfully surpassed the percolation threshold, enabling the functional transition from EWA to electromagnetic interference shielding. Therefore, this work provides an effective strategy for the design and fabrication of Al 2 O 3f /Oxide-based composites with tunable electromagnetic protection functions.

Ag nanoparticles decorated SiOC ceramic nanofiber membranes: a flexible and compressive platform for both electromagnetic and bacterial suppression

Hui Zhang,Shuangshuang Li,Yan Gao,Yu Hua,Yi Hou,Jinlei Yu,Lixi Wang

Multi-functional materials of both electromagnetic wave and bacterial suppression capacity are in significant practical demand for the surfaces of modern bio-medical devices. Meanwhile, the complex surface geometries put more requirements on the flexibility and durability. Ceramic-based materials with both dielectric loss and biocompatibility serve as an excellent template to meet these commands, However, the inherent brittleness further limits their practical application. Herein, we developed a flexible Ag-decorated SiOC nanofiber membrane via pyrolysis-assisted electrospinning. The Ag@SiOC nanofiber membrane retains approximately 98% of its compressive stress after 100 fatigue cycles and exhibits less than 2% variation in electrical resistance over 500 consecutive bending cycles. The incorporation of Ag significantly enhances dielectric and conductive loss ability, enabling an ultra-broad effective absorption bandwidth of 8.3 GHz (9.7-18 GHz) and a remarkable minimal reflection loss of −66.9 dB. Furthermore, the Ag@SiOC membrane demonstrates potent and stable antibacterial activity against both E. coli and S. aureus , maintaining clear inhibition zones over 12 h. This work presents a lightweight, flexible, and robust multifunctional composite, demonstrating significant potential as a conformal electromagnetic wave and bacterial protective material for cutting-edge technological and biomedical environments.

Effect of Hf and B incorporation on the SiOC precursor architecture and high-temperature oxidation behavior of SiHfBOC ceramics

Yang Lyu,Hui Tang,Guangdong Zhao

Polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs), such as silicon oxycarbide and its derivatives, show an exceptional high oxidative stability under extreme conditions. A novel multicomponent silicon oxycarbide system tailoring with transition metal (hafnium) and boron is fabricated by sol-gel and solvothermal method. Amorphous SiHBOC was formed via the condensation of Si–OH, B–OH and Hf–OH groups, respectively, and the bonds of Si–O–Hf and Si–O–B– were detected by FTIR and XPS characterization. After high-temperature pyrolysis, the precursor is converted to a rigid ceramic material that has an 85.8 wt % ceramic yield of SiHfBOC. We investigate the oxidation resistance performance of SiHfBOC using the isothermal oxidation test at 1400 °C. The results showed that the oxidative stability of SiHfBOC was significantly superior to than those of SiBOC ceramic.

Regulating structural units and morphology of SiOC anode for enhanced high-rate storage and long-life lithium ion batteries

Juan Wang,Yujie Gao,Zhengqiu He,Xiang Feng,Dong Lin,Debin Kong,Xinghao Zhang,Han Hu,Zaiping Guo,De Chen

The widespread use of silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) anodes in industry has been hampered by their limited reversible capacity, subpar rate performance, and complex manufacturing methods. In this research, a novel strategy is proposed to in situ construct SiOC with oxygen-rich structural units and flake morphology via one-pot synthesis, which integratively facilitates the reversible capacity and enhances the transport capability of Li + . Benefiting from these structural and compositional merits, the produced SiOC electrode showcases an impressive reversible capacity of 906 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 , a remarkable rate capability of 591 mAh g −1 and cycling stability of 98 % capacity retention rate at 2.0 A g −1 after 1200 cycles. Characterization results prove that the SiOC with a higher content of oxygen-rich structural units and flakes is helpful in forming the stable solid-electrolyte interface film and buffering volume expansion. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the SiOC anodes containing Li x SiO y compounds reduce the irreversible use of Li-ions during the initial reaction. Our findings present an effective method to simultaneously manipulate the structural units and morphology of SiOC compounds, paving the way for superior electrochemical performance.

Preparation of silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) anodes for high performance Li-ion batteries using competitive relationship between crosslinking and polymerization

Pengfei Wu,Xiaoxin Guo,Zhiming Su,Chao Liu,Shaohong Chen,Zhicheng Zheng,Anhua Liu

SiOC anode is considered as a candidate for the next generation of lithium ion batteries, because of its appealing specific capacity and relative small volume expansion. However, the inherent inferior electron conductivity blocks its development. Recently, controlling the amount of free carbon domains is adopted to modify the performance, ignoring the influence of free C on the SiOC phases change and their synergistic effect on the performance. The crosslinking and polymerization competition between divinylbenzene and polymethylsilsesquioxane was coordinated to regulate the free carbon and phase composition of SiOC ceramics, and a durable SiOC anode with high ceramic yield was prepared. The result is that, keeping the proportion of free C about 10% and increasing the SiO 3 C and SiO 2 C 2 phases ratios can obtain good anode within limited cycle life (440 cycle in this work), and increasing free C amount further is necessary for durable long cycle life. Herein, S-DVB-2 anode with 12% free C delivers 698.7 mAh g −1 at a current density of 100 mA g −1 after 100 cycles, and S-DVB-1 anode with 20.6% free C shows excellent stable long cycle performance at the current density of 0.5 A g −1 , the remaining capacity is 476 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles.

New insight into efficient photocatalytic CO2 reduction without any sacrifice agent over the novel hierarchical structured SiOC whisker aerogel

Xiaodong Wu,Yu Xia,Xiaodong Shen,Sheng Cui,Xiangbao Chen,Tete Daniel Koudama

Photoreduction of CO 2 to valuable fuels provides a promising strategy for managing the global carbon balance using renewable solar energy, yet the design of active, cost-effective, highly selective, and stable CO 2 reduction photocatalysts remains a big challenge. Herein, we report a novel SiOC aerogel photocatalyst synthesized by a simple one-step sol-gel process, combined with the supercritical drying technique and heat treatment processes. The resulting SiOC aerogel exhibits a large BET specific area with typical hierarchical structures, which is responsible for the enhanced photocatalytic activity. In addition, the formation mechanism of the SiOC whisker aerogel is revealed in this study. The optimized SiOC aerogel exhibits CH 4 and CO evolution activity of 5.8 and 20.5 μmol/g under simulated sunlight irradiation, respectively, without any additional co-catalyst or sacrificial agent, which is 6.4 and 3.9 times higher than those of the pristine SiC aerogel. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation confirms that the resulting SiOC aerogel can effectively adsorb and activate CO 2 and H 2 O molecules on the catalyst surface. The Gibbs free energy diagram further verifies the superior performance of the resulting SiOC aerogel over the pristine SiC and SiO 2 cluster via the rate-determining step calculations. The high efficiency of CO 2 reduction can be attributed to the structural merits and the electronic structures modulation, which greatly achieves fast separation and transfer of charge carriers. The work paves an insight into the rational design of photocatalysts toward simultaneously facilitating carrier separation and CO 2 activation from aerogel-based porous materials.
