Facile and green fabrication of electrochemical sensor based on poly(glutamic acid) and carboxylated carbon nanosheets for the sensitive simultaneous detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II)

Wei Shou-lian,Yan Liang-jie,Huang Xiang-jin,Li Jian-wen,Yao Su,Zhang Hua-sheng,Xu Ai-zhen

This work describes the development of a simple, effective, and sensitive electrochemical sensor based on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with carboxylated carbon nanosheets (cCNSs) and poly(glutamic acid) (PGA) for the simultaneous detection of trace amount of Cd(II) and Pb(II) by differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). The cCNSs were introduced to increase the effective surface area and electron transport efficiency of the sensor, while PGA acting as a capturer could capture target metal ions and eventually enhance the selectivity and sensitivity in the detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II). The designed sensor showed a linear range of 1.0–100.0 μg/L for both metal ions, with detection limits (S/ N  = 3) of 0.13 μg/L for Cd(II) and 0.15 μg/L for Pb(II), respectively. The sensor was applied to the simultaneous detection of Cd(II) and Pb(II) in the water and rice samples, and the results were in good agreement with those obtained by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS). It also gave excellent performance with regard to its selectivity, recovery, stability, and reproducibility.

Efficient Activation of Coal Fly Ash for Silica and Alumina Leaches and the Dependence of Pb(II) Removal Capacity on the Crystallization Conditions of Al-MCM-41

Xu Zhang,Tao Du,He Jia

In this study, four different coal fly ashes (CFAs) were used as raw materials of silica and alumina for the preparation of the alumina-containing Mobil Composition of Matter No. 41 (Al-MCM-41) and the exploration of an activation strategy that is efficient and universal for various CFAs. Alkaline hydrothermal and alkaline fusion activations proceeded at different temperatures to determine the best treatment parameters. We controlled the pore structure and surface hydroxyl density of the CFA-derived Al-MCM-41 by changing the crystallization temperature and aging time. The products were characterized by small-angle X-ray diffraction, nitrogen isotherms, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy,29Si silica magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance, and transmission electron microscopy, and they were then grafted with thiol groups to remove Pb(II) from aqueous solutions. This paper innovatively evaluates the CFA activation strategies using energy consumption analysis and determines the optimal activation methodology and parameters. This paper also unveils the effect of the crystallization condition of Al-MCM-41 on its subsequent Pb(II) removal capacity. The results show that the appropriate selection of crystallization parameters can considerably increase the removal capacity over Pb(II), providing a new path to tackle the ever-increasing concern of aquic heavy-metal pollution. Keywords:coal fly ash;CFA activation;Al-MCM-41;crystallization parameters;Pb(II) removal capacity

Robust MOF film of self-rearranged UiO-66-NO2 anchored on gelatin hydrogel via simple thermal-treatment for efficient Pb(II) removal in water and apple juice

Weixia Yang,Jinmeng Wang,Yong Han,Xueli Luo,Wenzhi Tang,Tianli Yue,Zhonghong Li

Pb(II), a highly toxic heavy metals that targets the human nervous system, has contaminated water and food in recent years. The nanomaterial of Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) possesses superior removal performances. However, their practical application is limited by their nature of fine powdery. Herein, we developed robust MOFs film without the adding of polymer in MOFs ink and the modification of the substrate, which was achieved by choosing appropriate substrate of gelatin hydrogel with functional groups and simple thermal-treatment after coating UiO-66-NO 2 onto gelatin hydrogel. The volatilization of the UiO-66-NO 2 dispersant ethyl acetate promotes the rearrangement and dense accumulation of UiO-66-NO 2 crystals to form a dense UiO-66-NO 2 film. During the following thermal-treatment process, –COOH of UiO-66-NO 2 and –NH 2 of gelatin chemically reacted to establish the stable composites of UiO-66-NO 2 film and gelatin hydrogel. The results of batch adsorption experiments demonstrate that adsorption behaviors of the as-synthesized gelatin/UiO-66-NO 2 film composite hydrogels can be explained by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, stating that this adsorption process involves with a chemical monolayer adsorption. Besides, gelatin/UiO-66-NO 2 film composite hydrogels own satisfactory removal efficiency for Pb(II) in apple juice, and the adsorption process has little impairment on the quality of apple juice. These results suggest that MOFs film is suitable for water decontamination and food safety control fields.

A facile syntheses of two engineered poly(vinyl alcohol) macroporous hydrogel beads for the application of Cu(II) and Pb(II) removal: batch and fixed bed column

Huining Zhang,Qing Chang,Jianping Han,Shiming Gao,Zhiguo Wu,Jiawei Hu,Yahong Yang,Zhiqiang Wei,Dengqi Zhang,Zhangpu Peng

In this work, two novel macroporous hydrogel beads (PVA/GO–N and PVA/CS) were prepared to remove Cu2+ and Pb2+ ions in the solution. The maximum Cu2+ sorption capacities on PVA/GO–N and PVA/CS beads were 96.22 and 74.66 mg g−1, while the counterpart sorption capacities of Pb(II) were 278.16 and 144.53 mg g−1, respectively. Isotherm, kinetics and XPS analysis investigation indicated that the sorption processes were controlled by multiple mechanisms. The Cu(II) and Pb(II) removal rates were influenced by the changes of pH, initial dosage, ionic strength, chelator and co-existed ions. The packed-bed sorption column experiments were also carried out to investigate the operating parameters and the potential of the two adsorbents in large scale adsorption systems in practical use. The kinetic model, Thomas equation, was applied to predict dynamic behavior of the fixed bed column for a successful design of a sorption column.

The one-step synthesis of a novel metal–organic frameworks for efficient and selective removal of Cr(VI) and Pb(II) from wastewater: Kinetics, thermodynamics and adsorption mechanisms

Hao Wang,Shuai Wang,Shixing Wang,Likang Fu,Libo Zhang

The removal of Cr(VI) and Pb(II) from wastewater is one of the methods to ensure water safety. However, it is still a difficult point to design efficient and selective adsorbent. In this work, Cr(VI) and Pb(II) were removed from water by a new metal–organic frameworks material (MOF-DFSA) with numerous adsorption sites. The max adsorption capacities of MOF-DFSA were 188.12 mg/g for Cr(VI) after 120 min and 349.09 mg/g for Pb(II) within 30 min. MOF-DFSA showed good selectivity and reusability after four cycles. The adsorption of MOF-DFSA was an irreversible process with multi-site coordination, and an active site adsorbed 1.798 Cr (VI) and 0.395 Pb (II). Kinetic fitting showed that the adsorption was chemisorption and surface diffusion was the main limiting step. Thermodynamic showed that Cr(VI) adsorption was enhanced at higher temperatures by spontaneous processes while Pb(II) was weakened. The chelation and electrostatic interaction of the hydroxyl and nitrogen-containing groups of MOF-DFSA with Cr(VI) and Pb(II) is the predominant mechanism, while the reduction of Cr(VI) also play an important role in adsorption. In conclusion, MOF-DFSA was a sorbent that can be used for the removal of Cr(VI) and Pb(II).

Ge Yang,Liu Zhihong,Yu Zhiqian,Wang Huanwen,Lu Xingwu,Zhang Leru,Xia Longgong

The present study focused on the Cu-Pb system and investigating the distribution behaviors of various minor elements through the equilibration-quenching-EPMA analysis experimental technique. Obtained results showed that: (1) An intermetallic compound consisting mainly of Cu-Pb-Se-Te formed below 956°C. (2) As, Sb and Sn had similar distribution behaviors, which mainly entered the solid Cu phase at the temperature range of 500–900°C, but became concentrated in the liquid alloy phase at temperature range of 900–1060°C, and their distribution ratios increased along with increasing temperature. (3) Bi was mainly found in the liquid alloy phase, and its distribution ratio ranged from 6.8 to 836.5 at the experimental conditions. (4) Se and Te formed an intermetallic alloy phase under 900°C, and they enriched in the liquid alloy phase between 960°C and 1060°C. (5) Au was mainly found in the solid Cu phase at the temperature range of 500–900°C, and its distribution ratio was about 1.5 at 900–1060°C. The distribution ratio of Ag decreased from 8.7 to 2.3 when increasing the temperature from 500°C to 1060°C. Distribution behavior of As, Sb, Bi and Sn is consistent with their interfacial enthalpies with Cu and Pb.

Utilizing different types of biomass materials to modify steel slag for the preparation of composite materials used in the adsorption and solidification of Pb in solutions and soil

An Wang,Meiling Wu,Zhongyuan Li,Yuqiang Zhou,Fanmin Zhu,Zhanbin Huang

This study utilized discarded steel slag (SS) as raw material and prepared modified steel slag materials (SS-SBC, SS-NBC, SS-BHA) through modification with biomass materials such as straw biochar (SBC), nutshell biochar (NBC), and biochemical humic acid (BHA). These materials were then applied for the removal of Pb from both solution and soil. The physical and chemical properties of the materials were analyzed using characterization techniques such as SEM, EDS, XRD, and BET. The specific surface area of the modified materials increased from the original 3.8584 m 2 /g to 34.7133 m 2 /g, 181.7329 m 2 /g, and 7.7384 m 2 /g, respectively. The study then explored the influence of different adsorption conditions on the adsorption capacity of Pb in solution, determining the optimal conditions as follows: initial concentration of 200 mg/L, adsorbent mass of 0.04 g, temperature of 15 °C, and pH = 2. To further investigate the adsorption process, kinetic and isotherm models were established. The results indicated that the adsorption process for all three materials followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Freundlich isotherm model, suggesting a multi-layer chemical adsorption. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the adsorption process was an exothermic spontaneous reaction. Soil cultivation experiments were conducted to explore the effects of different material addition amounts and cultivation times on the passivation of Pb-polluted soil. Analysis of heavy metal forms in the soil revealed that the addition of modified materials reduced the acid-extractable form of Pb in the soil and increased the residual form, which is beneficial for reducing the migration of Pb in the soil. FT-IR and XPS analyses were employed to study the functional groups, element composition, and valence states before and after adsorption passivation of Pb by the three materials. The results confirmed that the adsorption mechanisms of SS-SBC, SS-NBC, and SS-BHA mainly involved electrostatic adsorption, ion and ligand exchange , and surface precipitation. This study not only provides a new material for adsorbing and immobilizing heavy metals in soil and water but also offers a new approach for the resource utilization of steel slag waste.

Ratiometric Electrochemical Aptasensor with Magnetic Separation-Assisted Entropy Driven Catalyst for Dual Detection of Pb²⁺ and Hg²⁺ in Aquatic Products: A High-Amplification Strategy for Food Safety Monitoring

Qin Tao,Tianwen Liu,Mengyao Si,Tingting Zhang,Qiu Jin,Xiaoying Wang

The simultaneous presence of heavy metal ions (HMIs) such as Pb²⁺ and Hg²⁺ pose severe risks to food safety, particularly in aquatic products. Herein, a ratiometric electrochemical aptasensor integrated with magnetic separation-assisted entropy driven catalyst (EDC) was developed for simultaneous detection of Pb²⁺ and Hg²⁺. In this work, Fe@ZIF67-NH₂, an iron-doped zeolitic imidazolate framework, as both an electrode modifier and an internal reference, providing stable electrochemical signals and enhanced surface area. Herein, we utilized Fe@ZIF67-NH₂ (an iron-doped zeolitic imidazolate framework) as both an electrode modifier and an internal reference to provide stable electrochemical signals and increase the surface area. Dual EDC reactions amplified Pb²⁺ and Hg²⁺ signals independently, while magnetic separation isolated carbon dots (CDs) labelled DNA strands (CDP-D1 and CDH-P1) from interference strands, minimizing background noise. The sensor demonstrated wide linear ranges of 0.2-2.0×10⁴ ng mL⁻ 1 for Pb²⁺ and 0.1-1.0×10⁴ ng mL⁻ 1 for Hg²⁺, with detection limits of 0.1   ng   mL⁻ 1 and 0.03   ng   mL⁻ 1 , respectively. Practical validation using dried seafood samples showed recovery rates of 96.4-107.0% and relative standard deviations (RSDs) < 6.60%, and were consistent with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). This work presents a highly amplification-efficient and sensitive strategy for multiplex HMI detection in complex matrices, offering significant potential for food safety monitoring and environmental analysis.

Simultaneous preconcentration and penta-elemental speciation analysis of Cr, As, Cd, Hg, and Pb by online solid-phase extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography–inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

Pingxiu Zeng,Zhenzhen Ma,Hongmei Hu,Meiying Ye,Yuanchao Wang,Heyong Cheng

Species-specific toxic, metabolic, and bioavailable properties of commonly coexisting metal(loid)s—particularly Cr, As, Cd, Hg, and Pb—necessitate their speciation analysis. Because of the complexity and diversity in chemical form, concentration (from picograms to milligrams per liter), interactions, and sample matrix, multi-elemental speciation methods are preferred over traditional mono-elemental speciation methods. However, current multi-elemental speciation methods have primarily associated with only two metal(loid)s. Herein, we developed an efficient, sensitive, inexpensive, and green methodology for the simultaneous penta-elemental speciation analysis of Cr, As, Cd, Hg, and Pb using high-performance liquid chromatography combined with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and online solid-phase extraction (SPE) preconcentration. Food samples were extracted with a mixture of 0.1 M HNO 3 and 5 mM L -cysteine (Cys), chosen among 10 extractants for its good extraction efficiency, low noise, and minimal chromatographic interference. The proposed method offered a short analysis time (10 min for separation and 2 min for enrichment), excellent linearity (R 2 > 0.995), low detection limits (0.02 −0.12 μg L −1 in SPE-free mode; 0.02 −3.2 ng L −1 with online SPE), high precision (0.2 −2.4 %), and good recovery (81 −117 %) using an aqueous mobile phase of 5 mM tetrabutylammonium hydroxide + 5 mM Cys (pH 4.7). This demonstrates its good applicability to both food and water samples. Despite the incompatibility of Cr(VI) with As(III) and Cys, the proposed method excels in analytical, economic, and environmental aspects (maximizing the number of metal(loid)s within minimized analytical time using aqueous mobile phases), showing significant potential for a wide range of food, environmental, and biological samples.

Competitive adsorption of Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II) ions from acid mine drainage with zero-valent iron/phosphoric titanium dioxide: XPS qualitative analyses and DFT quantitative calculations

Jingjing Ren,Liuchun Zheng,Yaoming Su,Peipei Meng,Qianya Zhou,Hao Zeng,Tao Zhang,Huajian Yu

In order to treat heavy metal pollutants in acid mine drainage, zero-valent iron/phosphoric titanium dioxide (PTO-3nZVI and PTO-nZVI) was developed with phosphoric acid treatment and loading of zero valent iron and showed excellent adsorption of heavy metals. PTO-3nZVI and PTO-nZVI greatly improved the adsorption capacity for the targeted heavy metal Cd(II) (308 mg·g −1 for PTO-3nZVI and 206 mg·g −1 for PTO-nZVI) through complexation and coprecipitation. Additionally, competitive adsorption occurred between Cd(II) and coexisting heavy metal ions (Pb(II) and Cu(II)), resulting in different adsorption effects for PTO-3nZVI and PTO-nZVI, and their adsorption efficiencies decreased in the order Cu(II) > Pb(II) > Cd(II) for PTO-3nZVI and Pb(II) > Cu(II) > Cd(II) for PTO-nZVI. Based on these two aspects, X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) analyses and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were used to characterize the adsorption behaviors of PTO-3nZVI and PTO-nZVI. In particular, competitive relationships for different heavy metals were clearly revealed by binding energies, Frontier Molecular Orbitals (FMOs) analyses, electrostatic potentials, and total potential and differential charge analyses of adsorption sites, binding sites and binding strengths.

Preparation of magnesium potassium phosphate cement from municipal solid waste incineration fly ash and lead slag co-blended: Ca-induced crystal reconstruction process and Pb-Cl synergistic solidification mechanism

Shiwei Liu,Xing Cao,Weichen Yang,Runjie Liu,Lin Fang,Rui Ma,Juan Peng,Shuaifei Zheng,Fei Ji

Higher chlorine (Cl) content than lead (Pb) content in municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA) impeded the practical application of Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 Cl-derived magnesium potassium phosphate cement (MKPC) preparation strategy. Herein, Pb/Ca-rich lead slag (LS) was co-blended with MSWIFA to prepare MKPC for the synergistic treatment of both two solid wastes and the Pb-Cl solidification. The results showed that the resulting 15–15 (15 wt% MSWIFA and 15 wt% LS incorporation) sample achieved 25.44 MPa compressive strength , and Pb and Cl leaching toxicity was reduced by 99.18 % and 92.80 %, respectively. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses showed that Pb 2+ , Ca 2+ , phosphate and Cl - formed Pb x Ca 5−x (PO 4 ) 3 Cl in samples. The formation of Pb x Ca 5−x (PO 4 ) 3 Cl was also demonstrated by the high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscope (HAADF-STEM), while differences in the lattice characteristics of Pb x Ca 5−x (PO 4 ) 3 Cl and Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 Cl were found. In-situ XRD indicated that Ca 2+ accelerated the transformation of Pb 2+ to Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 Cl. After co-precipitating with Ca 2+ to form Pb x Ca 5−x (PO 4 ) 3 Cl, Pb 2+ continuously substituted Ca 2+ to eventually transform to Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 Cl. This work informs the synergistic treatment of MSWIFA and LS and offers new insights into the reaction mechanism between Pb 2+ , phosphate and Cl - under Ca 2+ induction.
