Sensors in intelligent monitoring and personal healthcare generally face power supply problems, such as cycle charging, regular maintenance, and battery replacement, which greatly limit the applications of sensing devices. Self-powered sensing system with a visible-light-driven photo-fuel cell (PFC) exhibits the advantage of not requiring any external power source for the chemical sensing of analytes. In this work, an enzyme-free PFC self-powered sensing platform was established for sensing sweat lactate using photoelectric conversion technology. A NiTiO 3 /Bi 2 O 3 /MoS 2 double Z-type heterojunction system was prepared by electrostatic interaction and self-assembly as the anode of the PFC. NiTiO 3 , Bi 2 O 3 and MoS 2 formed a double Z-type heterojunction system accelerated the electron transfer and improved the light absorption and photocatalytic efficiency, which in turn improved the perception of LA. In addition. lactic acid sensing experiments showed that the prepared non-enzymatic photoelectrochemical sensors had good detection performance. The assay results showed that the prepared biosensor has a wide detection range (30 μM-5 mM), low detection limit (6 μM), high selectivity(8μA μM −1 cm −2 ) and long-term stability. These assay results demonstrate its potential for applications in fields such as biomedicine and drug analysis.

A novel In 2 O 3 /AgI heterojunction, which has a hollow tubular structure with AgI particles distributed evenly on the outer and inner surfaces of In 2 O 3 microtubes, was fabricated from annealing of AgI adhered to MIL-68(In). The as-prepared heterojunction exhibited much higher photocatalytic activity towards tetracycline degradation compared to In 2 O 3 and AgI. The presence of InAg-1 (1.0 g/L), which has a In 2 O 3 :AgI mole ratio of 2:1, could achieve 98.4% removal of tetracycline (20 mg/L) from the solution phase under visible light illumination in 10 min, and it had excellent reusability and stability. The In 2 O 3 /AgI heterojunction also exhibited excellent performance in photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline in different types of water matrices and under natural sunlight illumination, demonstrating its potential in practical application. The superior photocatalytic activity of InAg-1 is attributed to the heterojunction formation and generation of oxygen vacancies (OVs), which improve the separation efficiency of photoinduced e − -h + pairs. Meanwhile, the built-in electric field (BIEF) formed with e - flowing from AgI to In 2 O 3 , which is confirmed by density functional theory calculations, helps the formation of a Z-scheme, instead of type II, heterojunction between In 2 O 3 and AgI. Results of radical trapping experiments and electron spin resonance spectra reveal that 1 O 2 , h + , •O 2 − , and •OH were the key reactive species involved in the photocatalytic degradation process. These findings indicate that Z-scheme photocatalysts with OVs could efficiently activate molecular oxygen and thus have excellent photocatalytic activity towards degradation of organic pollutants.

An appropriate analytical technique for determination of kaempferol (KMF) by its perturbation effect on Belousov-Zhabotinskii (B-Z) oscillating system was reported. The macrocyclic copper (II) complex [CuL] (ClO 4 ) 2 ] was used as a catalyst while malic acid as substrate in B-Z system. The ligand L in the macrocyclic-complex is 5, 7, 7, 12, 14, 14-hexamethyl-1, 4, 8, 11-tetraazacyclotetradeca-4, 11-diene. Experimental outcomes shown the perturbation effect of KMF could cause the change in the amplitude of oscillation (ΔA) which was directly related to its concentration (2.5 × 10 -6 to 3.0 × 10 -4 mol/L) with correlation coefficient of 0.99315. The calculated relative standard deviation (RSD) is 3.1 % by eight samples (1.8 × 10 -5 mol/L) and the observed lower limit of detection is 1.25 × 10 -6 mol/L. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) experiments were used to confirm the redox reaction between kaempferol and sodium bromate. Furthermore, the reaction perturbation mechanism was derived from the well-known FKN (Field-Koros-Noyes) oscillation mechanism.

Weak visible-light capture ability, ultrahigh charge recombination rate, and poor redox ability are crucial constraints to improve the photocatalytic performance for toluene degradation under visible-light. Hence, a dual Z-scheme of Bi 2 O 3 quantum dots decorated TiO 2 /BiOBr photocatalysts (Bi 2 O 3 QDs@TiO 2 /BiOBr) were prepared by a two-step hydrothermal method . X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were performed to identify the existence of Bi 2 O 3 QDs and TiO 2 that loaded on the surface of BiOBr. The introducing of oxygen vacancies in TiO 2 broadened its light absorption region to the visible-light. The constitutes of Bi 2 O 3 QDs and BiOBr were regulated and the optimized photocatalyst BT1-B10 exhibited 94.1 % of removal rate for gaseous toluene degradation after 150 min irradiation of visible-light (>420 nm) as well as good recoverability and durability. This result was obviously superior to other comparison samples. In-situ DRIFTs spectra and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) were carried out to provide a possible pathway for the toluene degradation. Additionally, a dual-channel electron transfer model based on the Z-scheme was proposed, which presented desirable visible-light response region, efficient charge separation efficiency, and enhanced redox ability. Notably, hydroxyl radicals (•OH) served as the dominant active species was confirmed by electron spin resonance (ESR) and gas-phase capture tests, that was beneficial to the ring-opening of toluene degradation. This dual Z-scheme heterojunction of Bi 2 O 3 QDs@TiO 2 /BiOBr photocatalyst showed great potential for the degradation of toluene under visible-light irradiation.

Molecular oxygen activation is essential to the photocatalytic oxidation reaction, which is highly dependent on the construction of active sites and efficient charge transfer of photocatalysts. In this study, we constructed Bi 4 V 2 O 11 /Ag/AgCl Z-type heterojunction photocatalysts with significantly enhanced molecular oxygen activation capacity. The systematic characterization and analysis including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that the formation of efficient Z-type heterostructure could be attributed to the introduction of Ag nanoparticles (NPs), which regulated the electron transfer direction from Bi 4 V 2 O 11 to AgCl. Owing to the advantage of enhanced charge transfer efficiency, the O 2 − generation capacity of Bi 4 V 2 O11/Ag/AgCl Z-scheme heterojunction was as high as 4.6 times that of pure Bi 4 V 2 O 11 . Consequently, Bi 4 V 2 O 11 /Ag/AgCl showed good degradation performance against tetracycline (TC), ciprofloxacin (CIP), ranitidine hydrochloride (RAN) and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) under visible light, and their degradation rates were 8.2 times, 5.9 times, 3.8 times and 11.9 times higher than those of Bi 4 V 2 O 11 , respectively. This study provides an effective and feasible strategy to design photocatalyst with improved molecular oxygen activation efficiency.

The design of a highly efficient polymer photocatalyst is an essential prerequisite for photo-biocatalysis in a polymer–enzyme coupled system, which offers an important platform for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals. However, current polymers still suffer drawbacks of poor water wettability, low visible light absorption, and high recombination rate of photoinduced electron/hole pairs, which severely limit their application in photo-biocatalysis. Herein, we demonstrate a polymer/polymer double-shell hollow nanostructure (PCN@PDBTS-HN) via a facile two-step polymerization with polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) and poly-dibenzothiophene sulfone (PDBTS) as internal and external shells, respectively. The covalent connection of those two polymer layers ensures the spontaneous electron transfer from PDBTS to PCN, as reflected in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and fluorescence spectra, which could effectively accelerate the charge separation and migration. Thanks to its improved light-harvesting, increased hydrophilicity, and enhanced redox capacity, the obtained PCN@PDBTS-HN demonstrates an excellent catalytic efficiency in visible-light-promoted NADH regeneration with a conversion of 85.4% being achieved in 40 min (turnover frequency of 0.859 mmol g–1 h–1). This value is 1.4 and 2.6 times higher than that of pristine PCN and PDBTS, respectively, indicating an essential role of Z-scheme heterojunction in improving the catalytic efficiency. In addition, PCN@PDBTS-HN also displays excellent photocatalytic selectivity for 1,4-NADH regeneration, remarkable photostability, and good biocompatibility. A total amount of 2.12 mM methanol and 8.39 mM l-glutamate was accumulated in the polymer/alcohol dehydrogenase (YADH) and polymer/glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) coupled system, respectively, implying high flexibility of fine chemical production via the photo-biocatalytic approach.

The dual plasmons (Bi, Ag)-based direct Z-scheme Bi 3 O 4 Cl/AgCl heterojunction ultrathin nanosheets are successfully synthesized by hydrothermal combined with solid-state reduction strategy. The plasmons Ag and Bi are formed during solid-state reduction process, which are firmly anchored on surface of Bi 3 O 4 Cl and AgCl, respectively, and favors the charge transfer obviously. Experiments results confirm the formation of heterojunction ultrathin nanosheets with the main size of 200∼300 nm and the thickness of <10 nm. The obtained dual plasmons-based direct Z-scheme Bi 3 O 4 Cl/AgCl heterojunction ultrathin nanosheets with the band gap of ∼1.66 eV exhibit excellent photothermal performance. 98.3% of Cr (VI) can be photocatalytic reduced and TOC removal rate of ceftriatone sodium reached 98.9% within 210 min, respectively. Due to the surface plasma resonance, the catalyst temperature increases obviously, indicating the enhanced photothermal performance, which is favorable for promoting the photocatalytic performance. Moreover, the cyclic stability experiment also proves the high stability and has advantages in practical applications. The excellent property can be ascribed to the direct Z-scheme accelerating charge transfer and prolonging the lifetimes, the dual plasmons enhancing photothermal performance and the spatial separation of photogenerated charge carriers.

In the present study, a novel visible-light Z-scheme photocatalyst based on BiOBr/CoFe 2 O 4 /graphene ternary structure was prepared through a hydrothermal approach. The morphology and structure of the prepared photocatalyst were characterized, and the optical properties of the photocatalyst were investigated as well. Afterwards, the photocatalytic performance of the Z-scheme photocatalyst were evaluated through degrading rhodamine B dye and reducing Cr(VI) under visible light irradiation. Compared with pure BiOBr and BiOBr/CoFe 2 O 4 binary composites, the prepared BiOBr/CoFe 2 O 4 /graphene ternary exhibited higher photo-degradation and photo-reduction efficiency. It was also found that the holes were the main active species which were generated during the photocatalysis process. Due to the existence of conductive graphene, the photo-generated active species could be effectively stabilized and quickly transferred. Moreover, the prepared photocatalyst showed very promising recyclable stability, in which the photocatalytic performance of the composites barely decreased after five consecutive circles. The present study provides a new insight in designing and constructing high-efficient and recyclable photocatalyst for aqueous pollutant removal.

A novel Z-scheme coated composite, Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 @Ni(Fe 0.05 Ga 0.95 ) 2 O 4 -Au-BiVO 4 , was designed for sonocatalytic degradation of sulfanilamide and fabricated by sol-hydrothermal and calcination methods. The prepared sample was characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, Raman spectra and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. In Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 @Ni(Fe 0.05 Ga 0.95 ) 2 O 4 -Au-BiVO 4 , Ni(Fe 0.05 Ga 0.95 ) 2 O 4 and BiVO 4 form a Z-scheme sonocatalytic system, Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 as an up-conversion luminescence agent (from visible-light to ultraviolet-light) provides the ultraviolet-light for satisfying the energy demand of wide band-gap Ni(Fe 0.05 Ga 0.95 ) 2 O 4 and Au nanoparticles as co-catalyst forms more active sites to enrich electrons. Also, Au nanoparticles as conductive channels promotes the electrons (e − ) from conduction band of BiVO 4 to transfer to valence band of Ni(Fe 0.05 Ga 0.95 ) 2 O 4 . Due to the characteristics of valence state diversity, the Fe 3+ and V 5+ constitute a redox reaction recombination system, which can also push electrons (e − ) on conduction band of BiVO 4 to quickly transfer to valence band of Ni(Fe 0.05 Ga 0.95 ) 2 O 4 . The sonocatalytic activity of Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 @Ni(Fe 0.05 Ga 0.95 ) 2 O 4 -Au-BiVO 4 nanocomposite was detected through degradation of sulfanilamide under ultrasonic irradiation. A high sonocatalytic degradation ratio (95.64%) of sulfanilamide can be obtained when the conditions of 10.00 mg/L sulfanilamide, 1.00 g/L Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 @Ni(Fe 0.05 Ga 0.95 ) 2 O 4 -Au-BiVO 4 , 300 min ultrasonic irradiation and 100 mL total volume were adopted. Some factors such as ultrasonic irradiation time and cycle number on the sonocatalytic degradation efficiency are also investigated by using TOC and UV–vis spectroscopy. Subsequently, the effects of hydroxyl radicals ( OH) and hole scavengers were investigated to elaborate the mechanism. The researches show that the prepared Z-scheme Er 3+ :Y 3 Al 5 O 12 @Ni(Fe 0.05 Ga 0.95 ) 2 O 4 -Au-BiVO 4 coated composite displayed an excellent sonocatalytic activity in degradation of sulfanilamide under ultrasonic irradiation.

A self-stabilized Z-scheme porous g-C3N4/I3–-containing BiOI ultrathin nanosheets (g-C3N4/I3–-BiOI) heterojunction photocatalyst with I3–/I– redox mediator was successfully synthesized by a facile solvothermal method coupling with light illumination. The structure and optical properties of g-C3N4/I3–-BiOI composites were systematically characterized by means of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, N2 adsorption/desorption, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectrum, and photoluminescence. The g-C3N4/I3–-BiOI composites, with a heterojunction between porous g-C3N4 and BiOI ultrathin nanosheets, were first applied for the photocatalytic elimination of ppm-leveled CH3SH under light-emitting diode visible light illumination. The g-C3N4/I3–-BiOI heterojunction with 10% g-C3N4 showed a dramatically enhanced photocatalytic activity in the removal of CH3SH compared with pure BiOI and g-C3N4 due to its effective interfacial charge transfer and separation. The adsorption and photocatalytic oxidation of CH3SH over g-C3N4/I3–-BiOI were deeply explored by in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, and the intermediates and conversion pathways were elucidated and compared. Furthermore, on the basis of reactive species trapping, electron spin resonance and Mott–Schottky experiments, it was revealed that the responsible reactive species for catalytic CH3SH composition were h+, •O2–, and 1O2; thus, the g-C3N4/I3–-BiOI heterojunction followed an indirect all-solid state Z-scheme charge-transfer mode with self-stabilized I3–/I– pairs as redox mediator, which could accelerate the separation of photogenerated charge and enhance the redox reaction power of charged carriers simultaneously.

In this work, an all-solid-state Z-scheme photocatalyst of WO 3 ·H 2 O/Pd/CdS ternary heterostructures was constructed by introducing a small amount of Pd into the optimized WO 3 ·H 2 O/CdS binary system, where Pd nanoparticles (NPs) were sandwiched between WO 3 ·H 2 O nanosheets and CdS NPs. The WO 3 ·H 2 O/Pd/CdS ternary heterostructures exhibited remarkably enhanced photocatalysis towards the oxidative coupling of benzylamines to imines, compared with the other photocatalysts of WO 3 ·H 2 O, CdS, WO 3 ·H 2 O/CdS, WO 3 ·H 2 O/Pd, and WO 3 ·H 2 O/CdS/Pd. The wavelength-dependent photocatalysis of WO 3 ·H 2 O/Pd/CdS is in good agreement with its light-harvesting intensity at the corresponding wavelengths. The photoelectrochemical results reflected the enhanced charge carrier separation in WO 3 ·H 2 O/Pd/CdS, and the photocatalytic H 2 evolution confirmed the highly efficient Z-scheme charge transfer in this ternary photocatalyst. Therefore, the WO 3 ·H 2 O/Pd/CdS ternary heterostructures possess distinct advantages of extended light harvesting region, spatial separation of electron and holes, and elevated redox power, which synergistically contribute to the superior photocatalysis. The Pd NPs sandwiched between WO 3 ·H 2 O and CdS acted as not only an electron mediator to facilitate the interfacial charge separation but also a cocatalyst to accelerate the selective oxidation of benzylamine. This work demonstrates a rational design of highly efficient Z-scheme photocatalysts and presents some revelations about the photocatalytic mechanism for selective organic transformations.

Z-scheme structure is an effectively construction to improve the photocatalytic activity due to the excellent photo-generated electron-hole pairs separation efficiency. In this paper, the Er 3+ :YAlO 3 @(PdS/BiPO 4 )/(Au/rGO), (Au/rGO)/CdS and modified Z-scheme Er 3+ :YAlO 3 @(PdS/BiPO 4 )/(Au/rGO)/CdS photocatalysts were prepared by hydrothermal, ultrasonic dispersion, deposition-precipitation and ultrasonic-assisted methods. The prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), raman spectra and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. The photocatalytic activity of prepared samples were evaluated via photocatalytic conversion rate of nitrite under ultraviolet-light and simulated solar-light irradiations. Due to the enhanced separation efficiency of electron-hole pairs, the Er 3+ :YAlO 3 @(PdS/BiPO 4 )/(Au/rGO)/CdS exhibited excellent performance under both ultraviolet-light and simulated solar-light irradiation, reaching 94.59% and 91.25% conversion rates, respectively. Meanwhile, the effects of simulated solar-light irradiation time and corresponding reaction kinetics on photocatalytic conversion of nitrite were studied. Subsequently, the effects of electron and hole scavengers were investigated to further elaborate the possible mechanism. In addition, the study of used times showed that the prepared modified Z-scheme Er 3+ :YAlO 3 @(PdS/BiPO 4 )/(Au/rGO)/CdS nanocomposites can be effectively recycled without an apparent inactivation on photocatalytic activity. This research may provide a potential way by utilizing solar energy efficiently for converting nitrite and other contaminants released into the environment.
