It is still a serious challenge to construct a water-soluble polymer-based air filtration membrane with high efficiency and good mechanical properties by electrospinning. In the study, using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyacetylimide (PEI) as the main materials, both nanocellulosic crystal (CNC) and zinc oxide (ZnO) as the synergistic reinforcers and methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) as the hydrophobic modifier, the electrospun PVA/PEI/CNC/ZnO composite nanofibrous membrane with dual air filtration mechanisms was established. One of the mechanisms was the interception of the three-dimensional network structure built by the composite nanofibrous membrane, the other was the electrostatic adsorption provided by CNC. Based on the dual air filtration mechanisms, the filtration efficiency of particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) reached 98.20%. Moreover, the composite nanofibrous membrane displayed a good thermal stability and could still maintain more than the filtration efficiency of 83% and low-pressure drop after treatment at 200 °C for 1 h. Moreover, the composite nanofibrous membrane could still maintain the filtration efficiency (97.3%) and low-pressure drop (110.7 Pa) after five washing cycles after filtration, reflecting good reusability. Interestingly, the PVA/PEI/CNC/ZnO composite nanofibrous membrane was simple to produce and demonstrated excellent filtration efficiency, as well as excellent thermal stability, which could be an effective barrier against PM2.5 invasion. Hydrogel electrolytes are ideal for flexible wearable electronic devices because of their high ionic conductivity, flexibility, and biocompatibility. However, some problems, such as poor mechanical properties, low conductivity, and lack of adhesivity, are encountered in the process of hydrogel preparation and application, which restrict the further development of hydrogel electrolytes. In this study, PVA was used as the first network, and P(AM-co-AMPS) as the second network to prepare a double-network hydrogel electrolyte. Laponite and Na2SO4 were introduced into the hydrogel during hydrogel formation as the nanofiller and salt with the salting-out effect to enhance its mechanical properties. The hydrogel electrolyte with high toughness (1663 kJ·m–3), adhesivity (77 kPa), and ionic conductivity (1.7 S·m–1) was obtained. In addition, the hydrogel electrolyte also has excellent antifatigue performance. In the 10 consecutive tensile cycles, the tensile strength does not decay. Due to the high adhesivity of the hydrogel electrolyte, a symmetrical all-solid-state supercapacitor was assembled with a tight interface between the hydrogel electrolyte and the AC/CNT composite electrode. The supercapacitor has a high specific capacitance of 186.1 mF·cm–2 at the current density of 1 mA·cm–2. In addition, the capacitor has good flexibility and can withstand bending at various angles. The hydrogel electrolyte also has excellent strain sensing performance, with an ultrafast tensile response time (0.17 s) and high sensitivity factor (GF = 10.01). Finally, the self-powered sensor system composed of a supercapacitor as the power supply device and hydrogel electrolyte as the sensing part was obtained and applied to human motion monitoring, which provides a potential application in the integrated flexible electronic system.

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has been employed and crosslinked as the selective layer of NF membranes with enhanced hydrophilicity. However, the influences of different crosslinking methods and agents on the reaction mechanism and membrane performance still need to be comprehensively studied. In this study, NF membranes were prepared by coating crosslinking (CC-membrane) and gradient crosslinking (GC-membrane) methods. Compared with CC-membrane, the GC-membrane possessed a 65% higher flux with Na 2 SO 4 rejection around 90%, under the optimal preparation conditions with PVA content of 0.10%, curing at 80 °C for 10 min. Crosslinking agents including 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (TMA), 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) and pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) with different spatial structure were used to optimize the GC-membrane. As confirmed by SEM, XPS, FTIR and contact angle tests, the 6FDA-GC membrane showed a thinner, smoother and more hydrophilic selective layer, and kept an excellent balance between the water flux (88.6 L/m 2 h) and Na 2 SO 4 rejection (88.7%). This is because the 6FDA with a large molecule and flexible spatial structure could form a more integrated crosslinking structure compared to PMDA. Meanwhile, the 6FDA-GC membrane showed rejections of over 80% towards the endocrine-disrupting compound 17α-Ethinylestradiol and exhibited stable antifouling ability and durability. Overall, this work studied systematically the influences of various crosslinking agents on the GC-membrane, and verified the potential of hydrophilic PVA membranes for nanofiltration.

Silver nanoparticle-embedded polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibers were prepared through electrospinning technique, using as antimicrobial agents and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates. Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized in liquid phase, followed by evenly dispersing in PVA solution. After electrospinning of the mixed solution at room temperature, the PVA embedded with Ag NPs (Ag/PVA) composite nanofibers were obtained. The morphologies and structures of the as-synthesized Ag nanoparticles and Ag/PVA fibers were characterized by the techniques of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy (UV–vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Ag NPs have an average diameter of 13.8 nm, were found to be uniformly dispersed in PVA nanofibers. The Ag/PVA nanofibers provided robust antibacterial activities against both Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and Gram-negative Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) microorganisms. It's also found that Ag/PVA nanofibers make a significant contribution to the high sensitivity of SERS to 4-mercaptophenol (4-MPh) molecules.

A facile approach for the synthesis of uniform, small size and well-dispersed rhodium nanoparticles (RhNPs) on cross-linked polyvinyl alcohol–polyethyleneimine (PVA–PEI) nanofibers has been demonstrated. Various methods were firstly employed to cross-link PVA nanofibers and the cross-linked PVA–PEI nanofibers exhibited good water stability and porous structures after immersing in water for 72 h. Because of the strong chelate effects among the amine groups, hydroxyl groups and Rh3+ ions, uniform RhNPs with an average diameter of about 2.5 ± 0.2 nm can evenly and densely grow throughout the PVA–PEI nanofibers via an in situ reduction. Meanwhile, the better dispersion and smaller size of the RhNPs grown on the nanofibers in comparison with the pre-synthesized RhNPs directly deposited on the nanofibers exhibit the advantages of in situ reduction for size and dispersion control. The successful fabrication of the RhNPs/(PVA–PEI) nanofibers with various densities of well-dispersed RhNPs demonstrates that the strong chelate effects and stabilization of the PVA–PEI nanofibers also play an essential role in the size and dispersion control of RhNPs. The crystal structures, chemical bonding and interactions of the prepared nanofibers were verified using XPS and FTIR spectra and XRD patterns. These novel nanomaterials were fabricated as non-enzymatic electrochemical sensors and exhibit highly electrocatalytic activity towards H2O2.

Design of tough and functional hydrogel based on carbohydrate polymers is always attracting. Injectable hydrogel based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and sodium alginate (Alg) have great potential for wound repair. However, simple hydrogel lacks functionality, such as antibacterial, which limits its application. Herein, we proposed a strategy of using Ag@MXene nanozyme to functionalize hydrogel and construct a near-infrared laser (NIR) responsive, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generating, and antibacterial platform for wound repair. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and Ag cluster modified Ti 3 C 2 (E-Ag@Ti 3 C 2 ) was prepared to enhance the performance of injectable PVA-alginate hydrogel (E-Ag@Ti 3 C 2 @H). The functionalized hydrogel presents porous structures (67 % porosity percentage) and excellent compressive and tensile properties (elongation up to 157 %). Under NIR laser irradiation, E-Ag@Ti 3 C 2 @H showed photothermal conversion efficiency and ROS generation ability. The inhibition rate for Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) can reach to 91.2 % and 90.3 %, respectively. Molecular biology experiments showed that the composite hydrogel could promote angiogenesis and wound healing by upregulating the expression of anti-inflammatory factors. The obtained injectable E-Ag@Ti 3 C 2 @H hydrogel is potential in accelerating diabetic wound healing.

In this study, we demonstrate the production of Cu-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) (HKUST-1) and F–Cu-MOFs (F-HKUST-1)-loaded electrospun polyvinyl alcohol/gelatin (PG) nanofibers for enhancing wound healing and antimicrobial activity in fabricated mats. Copper-and fluorine-based metal-organic frameworks were successfully prepared under different conditions. The MOF/PG nanofibers were characterized for their physicochemical properties, including mechanical strength and water uptake, using FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDX, and TGA analyses. The results revealed that MOFs and F-based MOFs incorporated into PG nanofibers exhibited good mechanical and thermal properties. FTIR and XRD analyses confirmed the functional groups and structural integrity of the prepared MOFs. The antimicrobial efficacy tests showed the highest growth reduction percentages in Staphylococcus aureus (99.72 ± 0.78 %), Klebsiella pneumoniae (97.76 ± 0.44 %), and Candida parapsilosis (94.50 ± 0.75 %). The biocompatibility of PVA, combined with gelatin's ability to stimulate epithelialization and granulation tissue development, contributed to improving the wound healing. The addition of HKUST-1 and F-HKUST-1 further enhanced the antimicrobial and wound healing effects.

The widespread utilization of phase change materials (PCMs) has been impeded by challenges such as leakage, low thermal/electrical conductivity, and inadequate light absorption. Although constructing interconnected three-dimensional (3D) carbon networks within PCMs can mitigate these issues, their complex and energy-intensive fabrication processes, coupled with insufficient mechanical strength causing significant leakage and collapse of liquefied PCMs under external loads or impacts, hinder their practical application. Herein, we present a novel approach for the preparation of 3D graphite/polyvinyl alcohol foam (GPF) through a simple vacuum foaming combined with air-drying method. The obtained GPF-5 exhibits impressive compression strength (4.46 MPa) and compression modulus (93.1 MPa) at low density of 0.30 g/cm 3 . Upon impregnation with polyethylene glycol (PEG), GPF-5/PEG exhibits notable mechanical strength (7.62 MPa), contributing to its thermal shape stability and resistance to leakage. Even when subjected to temperatures above the melting point of PEG under external loads, GPF-5/PEG maintains its original shape without any liquid leakage. Due to the efficient construction of 3D thermal conductivity pathways within GPF, GPF-5/PEG demonstrates a high thermal conductivity of up to 3.48 W/m K −1 with graphite contents of 21.1 wt%, representing an increase of 136 % and 1640 % compared to graphite/PEG (with equivalent graphite content) and pure PEG, respectively. Additionally, GPF-5/PEG displays high latent heat of melting (136.8 J/g) and superior thermal cycling stability. Moreover, GPF-5/PEG demonstrates high solar-to-thermal and electric-to-thermal energy conversion capabilities, highlighting their potential for diverse applications. The work offers a rational strategy for fabricating high-modulus carbon foam, which can be used for PCMs-based multi energy conversion and storage systems with high thermo-mechanical properties.

Thermal interface materials (TIMs) with excellent thermal conductivity are urgently required to tackle serious heat accumulation issues within the miniaturized electronic devices in electronic packaging field. Constructing thermal conductive network can enhance the thermal conductivity of polymer-based TIMs, but significantly restricted by the filler content and the orientation, thereby limiting the directional heat transfer behavior. In this work, BNNS@PVA aerogel with anisotropic thermal conductive network is proposed by sequential synthesizing routines, including the construction of PVA aerogel template by directional freeze-drying, surface assembly of BNNS-OH on the skeleton by dip-coating, and the alignment of the interconnected thermal conductive network by salting-out treatment. The relationship between the thermal conductive network microstructure and the thermal conductivity performance of BNNS@PVA is investigated by physiochemical characterizations and finite element simulation. By optimizing the filler content and the salting-out conditions comprehensively, the resulting aerogel with well-aligned microstructure achieves thermal conductivity of 4.63 W m −1 K −1 and anisotropic thermal coefficient of 473. Besides, the heat dissipation, compressive, and dielectric properties of the aerogels are performed. This research provides a promising strategy to enhance thermal conductivity performance by controlling the anisotropic alignment of the thermal conductive networks effectively, presenting great potential in the advanced polymer-based TIMs.

A metal-doped modified CO oxidation catalyst with strong adsorption and water resistance for coalbed methane was prepared by the CO precipitation method. The CO ablation characteristics were tested, and the Cu Mn catalyst synthesized by metal Ce doping achieved an instantaneous ablation efficiency of 80% when in contact with CO at room temperature. By analyzing the surface crystal structure and pore characteristics, as well as by testing the ablation properties, it was found that the CO oxidation catalyst synthesized by Ce had the best effect at a precipitation temperature of 70 °C. A water-resistant CO oxidation catalyst was synthesized by adding polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). After storage at a relative humidity of 90%, it still had a CO adsorption rate of about 85%. The water-resistant CO oxidation catalyst prepared with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as an additive had a higher content of CeO2crystal nuclei, and the PVA-added CO oxidation catalyst had the best ablation characteristics. In the evaluation of the water-resistant steam ablation process, the CuMnOx-Ce-PVA catalyst showed a significant increase in intermediate products during the stress process under water vapor conditions and a decrease in the peak value of the catalyst’s binding to water, and the catalyst has a particular inhibitory influence on the adsorption of water molecules on its surface. Due to its outstanding water resistance, the catalyst was able to retain good ablation characteristics.

A series of new PMDA@CS/PVA composite membranes were fabricated by the crosslinking of pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) with chitosan (CS) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) in the presence of glutaraldehyde (GA) as a crosslinking agent. While, their adsorptions for Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) in a single- and multiple mixed solutions were investigated. It was found that the incorporation of PMDA in the membranes can significantly enhance the adsorption capacity of membranes for these metals. The fitting of kinetic modeling s showed that the sorption manner of Cu(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) on the membranes obeyed the quasi-2nd kinetic modeling, indicating that it was dominated by chemisorption. The kinetic rate constants K 2 of membranes A-E for Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) were in the region of 0.005–0.02, 0.026–0.082, and 0.002–0.053 [g/(h·mg)], respectively. The fitting of sorption isotherm modeling followed the Langmuir isotherm equation and the maximal Langmuir adsorption capacities for Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) could reach 36.466, 32.119, and 30.916 mg/g, respectively. In addition, in the multi-component solutions, these membranes exhibited better selection for Cu(II) in Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) mixed solutions. Moreover, it can be recycled five times when an EDTA was used as a de-sorbent. The exploration based on statistical physics principle confirmed that the adsorption of these membranes for Cu(II) is a mono-ion manner. These findings suggest that PMDA@CS/PVA composite membranes are promising sorbents for the removal of toxic metal ions from waste vehicle power batteries or metal-bearing wastewater.

Wound dressings play an important role in the wound healing process. For the shortcomings of traditional wound dressings, hydrogel wound dressing with high strength and high water content is a new ideal wound dressing. In this study, polyvinyl alcohol and sodium alginate were selected as raw materials to form the first layer of network structure by physical cross-linking and chemical cross-linking. Then, the double network structure composite hydrogels were obtained by immersed in tannic acid solution. The microstructure, mechanical properties, water content, swelling ratio, antibacterial properties, adhesion properties and rheology of the hydrogels were subsequently investigated. The obtained double network hydrogels have high mechanical properties due to chemical cross-linking and hydrogen bonding interactions, and the maximum tensile strength can reach 4.06 MPa and the elongation at break is up to 569.12%. The optimized calculations from molecular simulations proved that the strengths of the three different types of hydrogen bonds formed reached 37.70, 54.98 and 60.50 kJ/mol, respectively, also justifying the high mechanical strength of the hydrogels. The hydrogel can form good adhesion on various substrate materials such as wood, plastic, glass and pigskin with maximum adhesion strengths of 200.6, 24.8, 24.4 and 13.1 kPa, respectively. Wood surface has higher adhesion strength due to the presence of large amount of cellulose and hydrogen bonds formed by hydrogel. In conclusion, good adhesion can be formed on the surface of different materials. It was a wound dressing with potential application. Graphical abstract
