Silver nanoparticles supported on short magnetic PVA/PEI nanofibers for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol

Yujiao Zou,Chenyu Li,Ni Li,Yili Zhao

Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs)-based nanomaterials are effective catalysts for a wide range of reactions. The recyclability and efficient catalytic properties of Ag-based nanocatalysts have been the focus of significant research interest. Herein, to address these challenges, we incorporated Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (NPs) into a polyvinyl alcohol/polyethyleneimine (PVA/PEI) solution to fabricate PVA/PEI@Fe 3 O 4 nanofibrous mats via electrospinning. Subsequently, the magnetic nanofibrous mats were homogenized to produce short magnetic nanofibers, which can be easily separated from the solution using a magnet. These short PVA/PEI@Fe 3 O 4 nanofibers were then immersed in an aqueous solution of AgNO 3 to adsorb and reduce Ag ions, resulting in the formation of Ag NPs with an average diameter of approximately 15 nm, uniformly dispersed on the nanofiber surface. The resulting short PVA/PEI@Fe 3 O 4 /Ag nanofibers exhibit excellent catalytic activity for the reduction of 4-NP, achieving a high conversion rate of 97.0 %. Furthermore, they demonstrated remarkable recyclability, maintaining high catalytic activity throughout six consecutive cycles. The short magnetic nanofibers proposed in this study are anticipated to facilitate the practical application of electrospun nanofibers in the catalytic removal of pollutants.

MOF UiO-66 Membranes for Pervaporation Prepared by Secondary Growth Using Zr(n-OPr)4

Shenyi Tang,Chenglian Luo,Zhi Wang,Xinlei Liu

A defect-free and stable metal–organic framework (MOF) membrane is a promising candidate for the separation of methanol/methyl tertiary butyl ether (MeOH/MTBE) mixtures. In this work, a structural-integrity and low-thickness (∼400 nm) UiO-66 membrane was fabricated by regulating the metal ion/ligand molar ratio in the synthesis solution and optimizing the preparation process using the secondary growth method with safer and more environment-friendly Zr(n-OPr)4 metal source. Based on the effective pore size and inherent amphiphilic structure of UiO-66, the membrane exhibits exceptional pervaporation (PV) performance. For the separation of MeOH/MTBE (5:95 wt/wt %) mixtures, the membrane displays an outstanding separation performance with an average separation factor of 2.23 × 104 and an average total flux of 3.61 kg·m–2·h–1 at 40 °C, which is superior to most membranes reported for the PV separation of MeOH/MTBE mixtures. In addition, a 72 h PV process was used to further confirm the structural stability of the membrane.

Morphology-controlled synthesis of CoSn(OH)6 nanocrystallines for enhanced photocatalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol

Zhang Enlei,Chen Jiaojiao,Xu Rui,Song Xiaowen,Zhang Bengui,Wang Guosheng

In this work, the different shaped CoSn(OH) 6 nanocrystallines were prepared by hydrothermal method. The morphology, microstructure, and composition of the prepared nanocrystallines were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and other methods. The optical properties of CoSn(OH) 6 nanocrystallines with different morphologies were analyzed using UV–vis DRS. With the reduction of 4-nitrophenol as a model reaction, the photocatalytic performance of CoSn(OH) 6 nanocrystallines with the different morphologies was investigated. The results show that the CoSn(OH) 6 nanorings significantly improved the photocatalytic reduction 4-nitrophenol performance. The conversion rate of 4-nitrophenol reached 94% within 6 min. Finally, a potential mechanism for the photocatalytic process of CoSn(OH) 6 nanorings is discussed.

Optimizing the window layer for achieving over 10% efficient Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 solar cells

Yu He,Chenxi Zhao,Zecheng Lu,Ning Guo,Hongmei Luan,Yanchun Yang,Ruijian Liu,Chengjun Zhu

Indium tin oxide (ITO) and intrinsic ZnO (i-ZnO) are usually used as the window layer of Cu 2 ZnSn(S,Se) 4 (CZTSSe) solar cells within a typical structure. The optoelectronic properties of the window layer play a crucial role in determining the efficiency of solar cells. In this work, two types of CZTSSe solar cells with and without i-ZnO layers were fabricated using dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and dimethylformamide (DMF) as solvents, respectively. The impact of the window layer on the performance of CZTSSe solar cells was investigated. The results suggest that the device without i-ZnO still exhibits a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) compared to conventional bilayer i-ZnO/ITO structures. By removing i-ZnO and optimizing the thickness of ITO, the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of DMSO and DMF-based CZTSSe solar cells has been up to 10.17% and 10.27%, respectively, with an increase in open-circuit voltage (V OC ) of 15 mV (in DMSO system) and 10 mV (in DMF system), as well as an enhancement in fill factor (FF) by ∼5 percentage points. These performance improvements are mainly attributed to the reduction of series resistance (R s ) of the window layer due to the removal of i-ZnO layer. Further analysis shows that the generation and collection of photon-generated carriers in CZTSSe solar cells can be affected by the optimized window layer due to optical interference effects and its resistance. Our research may provide insights for the preparation of high efficient CZTSSe solar cells with new structures of the i-ZnO free window layer.

Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) deficiency impedes Toxoplasma gondii excreted-secreted antigens (ESA)-induced abortion

Caiqun Huang

Introduction T oxoplasma gondii is an opportunistic intracellular parasite that is a major pathogenic factor in miscarriage, especially when it occurs early in pregnancy. We have previously demonstrated that the regulation of forkhead box transcription factor (Foxp3) is associated with abortion in early pregnancy caused by excretory-secretory antigen (ESA) of strain China 1. We aimed to reveal the underlying mechanism of miscarriage caused by ESA. Methods A TLR4 −/− pregnant mouse model was successfully constructed. Pregnant mice at gestational day 5 (G5) were injected with ESA. All animals were sacrificed on G13, pregnancy outcomes were observed, and abortion rates were calculated. Placental status observed by Hematoxylin-eosin staining; gene expression was measured by IHC; flow cytometry analysis was used to determine the number and function of regulatory T cells. In EL4 cells, real-time PCR and Western blot were used to evaluate gene expression and cytokines assay. Results In vivo studies revealed that ESA injection caused 83% abortion in pregnant mice but only 35% abortion in TLR4−/− pregnant mice. In addition, ESA attenuated the number and function of regulatory T cells, further suppressed Foxp3, FOXO1 levels, and upregulated CD127 expression. TLR4 −/− mice partially reversed this inhibitory effect on regulatory T cells. Furthermore, in vitro studies revealed that ESA inhibited TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway expression and that TLR4 agonists significantly restored the ESA-induced decrease in Foxp3. Discussion These findings suggest that ESA suppresses Foxp3 expression by blocking TLR4/NF-κB signaling, resulting in miscarriage. More importantly, the results indicated that miscarriage caused by ESA is TLR4 dependent.

SUR1-TRPM4 Regulates Aquaporin-4 Subcellular Localization by Astrocytic Endfeet Calcium Signals Following Status Epilepticus

Tingting Yang,Zhenzhou Lin,Mingjia Yu,Yongchuan Li,Jiancong Chen,Yuanchi Liu,Kaibin Huang,Suyue Pan

Status epilepticus (SE) is a severe condition that results in uncontrollable cerebral edema and cognitive dysfunction. Recent studies suggest that the localization of aquaporin-4 (AQP4) in astrocytic endfeet plays a crucial role in regulating blood–brain water transport and cell volume control, particularly along perivascular pathways. However, the signaling mechanisms underlying AQP4 localization remain poorly understood. In this study, we utilized the genetically encoded fluorescent calcium (Ca 2+ ) indicator GCaMp6f to investigate Ca 2+ signals in astrocytic somata, processes, and endfeet during SE induction and observed enhanced Ca 2+ signals in both the somata and perivascular endfeet of astrocytes. We employed genetic knockout of TRPM4 ( Trpm4 −/− ) and glibenclamide treatment to explore the role of sulfonylurea receptor 1 transient receptor potential melastatin-4 (SUR1-TRPM4) channel in these Ca 2+ responses. Both approaches significantly suppressed the Ca 2+ signals in the astrocytic endfeet and reduced perivascular expression of the Ca 2+ -related signaling pathway sensor calmodulin (CaM). Furthermore, we found that AQP4 localization was no longer confined to the domains of astrocytic endfeet following SE. Inhibition of SUR1-TRPM4 through pharmacological blockade or gene deletion restored the subcellular localization of AQP4, reduced cerebral edema, and improved cognitive outcomes post-SE. Our findings suggest that SUR1-TRPM4 plays a pivotal role in regulating astrocytic Ca 2+ signals and mediating the aberrant expression and subcellular localization of astrocytic AQP4 along perivascular pathways. Together, these findings demonstrate a novel molecular mechanism underscoring SUR1-TRPM4 therapy in the treatment of SE characterized by dysregulated Ca 2+ signaling in astrocytic endfeet.

Microneedle Patches Coloaded with 4-MSK and C. Reinhardtii Alleviate Melanin Deposition Through Multipathway Synergy

Min Zhou,Ruru Xiong,Xuanxuan Wang,Huishuang Li,Lijuan Wang,Guixia Ling,Peng Zhang

Hyperpigmentation (HP) is mainly triggered by ultraviolet irradiation or local inflammation, and the free radicals generated by these two factors are the core inducers of various skin diseases. This study proposes a multipathway and highly efficient treatment strategy for melanin deposition. A microneedle (MN) system based on hydrolyzed collagen (HC) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was designed to precisely deliver Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (C. reinhardtii) and potassium 4-MSK (C.r&4-MSK-MN) to skin tissues. C. reinhardtii contains unique antioxidant components such as arsenoproteins, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), and algal polysaccharides, which distinguish it from other microalgae like Chlorella. In vitro free radical scavenging experiments show that at a concentration of 1 × 109 cells/mL, C. reinhardtii exhibits scavenging rates of 89.26%, 101.44%, and 103.57% against DPPH·, ABTS·+, and ·OH radicals, respectively. In addition, potassium 4-methoxysalicylate (4-MSK) can inhibit tyrosinase activity and promote skin metabolism. Therefore, C.r&4-MSK-MN has the following advantages: on one hand, C.r&4-MSK-MN successfully breaks through the skin barrier, directly delivering C. reinhardtii cells to the target site to scavenge free radicals and reduce the stimuli for melanin production. On the other hand, 4-MSK inhibits tyrosinase activity to reduce melanin synthesis and, at the same time, promotes skin metabolism to reduce melanin deposition on the skin surface, achieving multipathway reduction of melanin deposition. Experimental results showed that in animal models, C.r&4-MSK-MN significantly reduces the epidermal thickness of rats and substantially decreases melanin production. This research outcome not only provides a new strategy for the treatment of melanin deposition but also confirms that microalgae have potential application prospects in the fields of skin care (such as whitening and antiaging) and cosmeceuticals.

Dual emission and efficient energy transfer in (4-BTP)2ZnBr4:Mn2+ for enhanced optical properties

Chenbo Xu,Jianing Zhang,Yuexiao Pan,Yangyang Liu,Xiaoyun Yang,Hongping Xiao,Jun Zou

The quest for advanced luminescent materials with high quantum yields and excellent stability is essential for the development of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). In this context, we present a novel zero-dimensional (0D) organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides (OIHMHs), (4-BTP) 2 ZnBr 4 :Mn 2+ , which exhibits dual emission characteristics. The material achieves a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 87.6 % under 365 nm excitation, indicating its high radiative efficiency. Furthermore, it demonstrates remarkable water resistance, maintaining its photoluminescence (PL) performance after two months of immersion in water, and excellent thermal stability up to 325 °C. Importantly, the successful incorporation of Mn 2+ ions into the (4-BTP) 2 ZnBr 4 matrix allows for tunable emission from blue-violet to green, depending on the excitation wavelength and Mn 2+ concentration. A stable white light emission in LED with a color rendering index (CRI) of 88 and correlated color temperature (CCT) of 6757 K has been obtained with the phosphor (4-BTP) 2 ZnBr 4 :Mn 2+ . This work contributes to the fundamental understanding of energy transfer mechanisms in hybrid materials.

Waste biomass-supported FeCo bimetallic MOF for the removal of 4-nitrophenol via peroxymonosulfate activation

Yulong Luo,Kerun Li,Wei Liu

The Advanced Oxidation Process (AOPs) has garnered significant attention as an efficient and promising technology for wastewater treatment in the field of environmental remediation. Currently, the exploration of highly effective catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation remains a focal point of scientific research, with increasing emphasis placed on the reuse of waste materials. In line with this objective, this study reports the synthesis of a Fe Co bimetallic metal-organic framework (MOF)-sponge composite (FCS) via an in-situ growth method using discarded natural sponge as a support material. Subsequently, the carbonized derivative (FCSC), obtained through high-temperature carbonization, was employed as a catalyst for PMS activation. The resulting catalyst demonstrated remarkable efficiency in removing 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) from aqueous solutions. Utilizing waste natural sponge as a support not only facilitates resource recovery but also enables the uniform distribution of MOF particles within its inherent three-dimensional porous structure. This feature enhances the contact between the catalyst and pollutants, thereby improving catalytic performance. Moreover, diatomic active sites exhibit significantly higher degradation efficiency toward 4-NP compared to the monometallic configurations. This enhanced performance can be attributed to the more rapid generation of free radicals by diatomic structures during PMS activation, which accelerates electron transfer between metal centers and adjacent oxygen atoms. This work offers novel insights into the development of efficient strategies for the removal of organic contaminants.

Flotation separation scheelite from calcite by using a novel depressant of Poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate)

Jiali Chen,Peng Gao,Jie Liu,Yimin Zhu

Scheelite and calcite was firstly separated by new depressant Poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) with NaOL system. The recovery of scheelite was 87.18 % and the recovery of calcite was 5.57 % in single flotation experiments, the recovery and grade of WO 3 was 70.53 % and 61.08 % respectively in artificial mixed ore flotation under the optimal conditions of 10 mg/L NaOL, 10 mg/L PSS and pH of 8. Contact angle measurements, atomic force microscope (AFM) analysis, zeta potential analysis, fourier transforming infrared spectra (FT-IR) analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis were performed to uncover the reaction mechanism. The results showed that PSS could not adsorbed on scheelite by chemical reaction, and PSS had no impact on the further adsorption of NaOL onto the scheelite surface. Therefore, scheelite could still keep a high recovery with PSS. However, PSS could be strongly adsorbed on calcite by chemisorption between the Ca site of calcite and O site of PSS, which increased the hydrophilia of calcite and imped the further adsorption of NaOL. Therefore, it could selectively depress the flotation of calcite.

Sub-4 nanometer porous membrane enables highly efficient electrodialytic fractionation of dyes and inorganic salts

Lin Jiuyang,Yu Zijian,Chen Tianci,Huang Junming,Chen Lianxin,Li Jiangjing,Li Xuewei,Huang Xiaolei,Luo Jianquan,Ang Elisa Yun Mei,Toh William,Wang Peng Cheng,Ng Teng Yong,Seo Dong Han,Zhao Shuaifei,Zhong Kuo,Xie Ming,Ye Wenyuan,Van der Bruggen Bart,Wan Yinhua

During the synthesis of dyes, desalination of high-salinity dye-containing waste liquor is a critical premise for high-quality, clean dye production. Conventional membrane processes, such as electrodialysis, nanofiltration and ultrafiltration, are inevitably subjected to serious membrane fouling, deteriorating the dye/salt fractionation efficacy. Integrating the technical merits of electrodialysis and pressure-driven membrane separation, we devise an electro-driven filtration process using a tight ultrafiltration membrane as alternative to conventional anion exchange membrane for rapid anion transfer, in view of dye desalination and purification. By employing a sub-4 nanometer tight ultrafiltration membrane as anion conducting membrane, the electro-driven filtration process achieves 98.15% desalination efficiency and 99.66% dye recovery for one-step fractionation of reactive dye and NaCl salt, markedly outperforming the system using commercial anion exchange membranes. Notably, the electro-driven filtration system displays a consistently high and stable fractionation performance for dyes and salts with unprecedentedly low membrane fouling through an eight-cycle continuous operation. Our results demonstrate that the electro-driven filtration process using nanoporous membranes as high-performance anion conducting membranes shows a critical potential in fractionation of organic dyes and inorganic salts, unlocking the proof of concept of nanoporous membranes in electro-driven application.

4-Ethylacetophenone from Potato Plants Repels Phthorimaea operculella and Inhibits Oviposition: A Sustainable Management Strategy

Xinyu Ma,Junjie Yan,Guangyuan Su,Fathiya M Khamis,Athanase Hategekiman,Yulin Gao

The potato tuber moth ( Phthorimaea operculella ) is a destructive pest that infests potato crops by boring into and eating the tubers. Although chemical pesticides are frequently employed to manage these moths, their efficacy is inconsistent and they can cause environmental damage. In this study, we investigated a natural alternative by examining specific volatiles emitted by potato plants that may repel the moths and inhibit oviposition. We identified five plant-based compounds, one of which, 4-ethylacetophenone, exhibited strong repellent effects against the moths at all tested concentrations and significantly reduced egg-laying behavior. This finding suggests that 4-ethylacetophenone could serve as an eco-friendly way to protect potato crops from P. operculella , providing a safer alternative to conventional pest control strategies. The potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller), is an important pest of potato crops capable of boring into and consuming the potato tubers. Although chemical insecticides are employed to control P. operculella populations, their efficacy is frequently limited, raising environmental concerns. Host plant volatiles are important allelochemicals that can be exploited for the management of pests. In our previous studies, we identified five volatile organic compounds (3-ethylacetophenone, 4-ethylacetophenone, geranylacetone, ethylbenzene, and 4-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pentanone) as allelochemicals potentially influencing the oviposition behavior of P. operculella . Using electroantennography (EAG) and behavioral assays, we found that 4-ethylacetophenone significantly repelled P. operculella at all tested concentrations (1 μg, 10 μg, and 100 μg; p < 0.05), while 3-ethylacetophenone showed no significant effects ( p > 0.05). Finally, the effect of 4-ethylacetophenone on preventing P. operculella from laying eggs was determined by an oviposition selection experiment. Our findings indicate that 4-ethylacetophenone derived from potato plants not only repels P. operculella and prevents egg-laying but also has the potential to reduce the number of eggs, making it a promising green alternative for controlling this pest.
