Oxide-derived Cu nanowire arrays were developed for electrochemical CO 2 reduction. • Cu nanowire arrays are capable of producing syngas with a wide range of H 2 /CO ratios. • The tunable selectivity of catalysts was attributed to the grain boundaries in Cu. Electrochemical reduction of CO 2 to value-added fuels and chemical feedstocks, such as syngas, stands as an appealing solution for energy and environmental sustainability. Currently, it suffers from a lack of catalysts with good activity and selectivity. Herein, we have synthesized a series of oxide-derived Cu nanowire arrays (NAs) as catalysts for electrochemical CO 2 reduction. Copper oxides NAs were first synthesized by thermal oxidation and then electrochemically reduced. By adjusting the annealing temperatures, the obtained Cu NAs are capable of reducing CO 2 and H 2 O to produce syngas with a wide range of H 2 /CO ratios (from 2.5:1 to 0.7:1) at a low overpotential. First-principles calculations confirmed that the enhancement of CO 2 reduction and suppression of hydrogen evolution were attributed to grain boundaries in the Cu NAs. This research demonstrates a promising strategy for the development of Cu-based catalysts in tunable syngas production. Download: Download high-res image (187KB) Download: Download full-size image

Ammonium perchlorate (AP), as a key component of solid propellants, exhibits inherent limitations in combustion efficiency due to its high thermal decomposition temperature and slow decomposition process. To address this, this study synthesized a copper-based metal-organic framework (Cu-BTC) catalyst via a simple solvothermal method. AP/Cu-BTC composites with varying loading levels (1–5 wt%) were prepared, and their effects on AP thermal decomposition, combustion behavior, and catalytic mechanisms were systematically investigated. Results indicate that Cu-BTC significantly enhances the decomposition performance of AP, with a 1% loading demonstrating optimal effects. At a heating rate of 10K/min, the peak temperature of AP's high-temperature decomposition decreased by 119.5°C, the apparent activation energy decreased by 94.4 kJ/mol (-39.8%), and the total heat release increased by 396.1 J/g (+85.7%). Combustion tests revealed that pure AP could not be directly ignited, whereas the addition of Cu-BTC enabled successful ignition. The combustion intensity and duration varied significantly with catalyst loading. Catalytic performance exhibits non-monotonic variation with loading levels, and excessive loading leads to a decline in efficiency due to mass-transfer blockage. The remarkable enhancement in AP performance stems from the synergistic interaction between Cu-BTC's rapid mass transfer capability (derived from its ultra-high specific surface area) and the catalytic function of its Cu²⁺ active sites (facilitating proton/electron transfer). This study offers a novel perspective on precisely regulating solid propellant combustion performance through catalyst structural design and loading optimization.

Nitrate (NO 3 - ), a prevalent pollutant in aquatic ecosystems, poses significant ecological and human health risks due to its excessive accumulation, which accelerates eutrophication. In this study, a novel bimetallic material (B-Fe/Cu) was synthesized via high-energy ball milling using micron-sized zero-valent iron (ZVI) and copper salts. When integrated with ultraviolet (UV) light, the UV/B-Fe/Cu system achieved complete conversion (100%) of 10 ppm NO 3 - -N within 120 minutes. Intriguingly, abundant Cu species were found to mediate the efficient redox cycling between Fe 3+ and Fe 2+ , and superoxide radicals (O 2 ·- ) facilitated the redox cycling between Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ and Cu 2+ /Cu + , while the localized micro-acidic microenvironment of B-Fe/Cu enabled the dynamic pH regulation during nitrate reduction. These triple functionalities ensured the full nitrate conversion in UV/B-Fe/Cu system without toxic NO 2 - byproduct formation across a wide pH range of 3.0-11.0. Furthermore, the UV/B-Fe/Cu system demonstrated exceptional operational stability and environmental robustness, retaining >90% reduction efficiency after four consecutive reuse cycles. These insights advance the rational design of iron-based materials for scalable and sustainable water purification technologies.

The excellent CO 2 adsorption capacity of 13X zeolite makes it a promising candidate for carbon capture, and its performance can be further improved by methods like metal incorporation. However, the definitive relationship between extra-framework unsaturated metal sites and CO 2 adsorption mechanisms remains poorly understood. In this work, a convenient strategy was developed to optimize the proportion of Cu 2+ species in CuX zeolites by adjusting the Cu loading and calcination temperature. Through dynamic and static adsorption measurements, the optimized sorbents 3CuX-450 (3 wt% Cu, calcined at 450 o C) exhibited significantly enhanced CO 2 uptake, adsorption rate, and adsorption heat. Comprehensive characterization, including XPS, H 2 -TPR, and DFT calculations, elucidated the evolution and the quantity of Cu 2+ species. The 3CuX-450 sorbent had relatively high CO 2 uptake, adsorption rate and adsorption heat. Meanwhile, it demonstrated excellent recyclability and maintains its performance for 10 successive adsorption-desorption cycles. This study deepens the understanding of mechanistic role of cations in FAU zeolites. The findings of this study can be applied to the rational design of optimized CO 2 active sites in zeolite-based sorbents.

LiBH 4 , a solid-state hydrogen storage material with ultra-high theoretical hydrogen capacity, is seriously hindered for the practical applications by its high thermodynamic stability and slow hydrogen desorption kinetics. Herein, the dehydrogenation properties of LiBH 4 are remarkably improved by confinement in the porous (Cu,Ni)/Cu 2 O heterostructure (np-(Cu,Ni)/Cu 2 O), which was achieved using a novel two-step method containing dealloying of Mg–Cu–Ni precursor alloy to form the porous (Cu,Ni) solid solution, followed by micro-oxidation under air conditions. Hydrogen release from the constructed LiBH 4 @np-(Cu,Ni)/Cu 2 O (1:2, mass ratio) system begins at approximately 80°C and ends before 380°C, with 12.5wt% of hydrogen desorbed. Moreover, the apparent dehydrogenation activation energy has been reduced to 44.2 kJ/mol. After rehydrogenation at 400°C under 8 MPa hydrogen pressure, the LiBH 4 @np-(Cu,Ni)/Cu 2 O (1:2, mass ratio) system can release 3.6wt% of hydrogen during the second dehydrogenation process. These findings show that the synergistic effect of confinement and heterostructure catalysis provided by the porous metal derivatives can greatly enhance the hydrogen storage properties of LiBH 4 .

High-load and high-dispersion strategies are an effective way to compensate for the inherent lack of activity of non-precious metals. However, high-load and high-dispersion catalysts are limited by the entropy increase principle and are not only difficult to prepare but also difficult to establish structure–performance relationships in heterogeneous catalytic systems. Here, we report Cu–Cux/MOF-200 catalysts for electrochemical acetylene selective hydrogenation (EASH) featuring high-load and high-dispersion synergistic Cu single atoms (SAs) and nanocluster sites (NCs). Experimental and theoretical calculations show the reactants H2O and C2H2 compete for adsorption at Cu NC/NP sites, while the efficient dual-site synergistic effect compensates for the difficulties in C2H2 activation and insufficient hydrogen ion supply under high current density. The electron-deficient Cu SAs weaken the energy barrier for H2O dissociation, while a linear relationship exists between particle size and valence state of Cu active sites for acetylene activation. Finally, the Cu–Cux/MOF-200 catalysts show no signs of deactivation after 51 h of long-term evaluation in an ethylene-rich atmosphere, achieving acetylene conversion exceeding 99.9% and ethylene selectivity exceeding 90%.

Cu/Zn-MOF nanozyme exhibits robust triple-enzyme activities. • It promotes healing by combining antibacterial, antioxidant, and pro-proliferative effects. • This work provides a strategy for designing multifunctional nanoenzyme platform for efficient wound therapy. The treatment of infected wounds is severely challenged by bacterial resistance and dysregulated healing processes. Herein, we report a bimetallic Cu/Zn-MOF nanozyme fabricated via a facile self-assembly strategy. The material exhibits robust triple-enzyme mimetic activity (superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and ascorbate peroxidase (APx)) enabling efficient reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging to alleviate oxidative stress and inflammation. In vitro, Cu/Zn-MOF demonstrated potent, broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, primarily associated with disruption of bacterial nucleotide metabolism and energy homeostasis, while also promoting fibroblast proliferation and migration. In an infectious wound model, Cu/Zn-MOF treatment significantly accelerated wound closure, enhanced collagen deposition, and facilitated orderly tissue regeneration, achieving a healing rate of 93.4% by day 12. This work presents a versatile nanozyme platform that intelligently orchestrates the sequential stages of wound healing, offering a promising multi-functional strategy for regenerative medicine.

Comprehensive Summary Nanostructured island-confined metal catalysts offer remarkable stability; however, it is challenge to balance the activity and selectivity in multi-step reactions owing to the limited electronic modifications for individual metal systems. Here, we develop a strategy by integrating “nano-island confinement” with “dilute alloying”, in which ~0.7 nm Pt 95 Cu 5 dilute alloy clusters are confined onto CeO ₓ nano-islands. As expected, this confinement not only suppresses metal migration and leaching, but also tailors the surface electronic structure via strong Pt-Cu coupling to regulate substrate adsorption and activation. Various characterizations reveal that the as-designed catalytic system maintains abundant active sites because of the nearly full exposure of Pt, and more importantly, downshifts the Pt d-band center through d-d hybridization within Pt-Cu dilute alloy. As a result, this configuration optimizes furfural adsorption behavior, and favors its planar adsorption instead of vertical one. DFT calculation further shows that planar-adsorption-driven hydrogenation remarkably enhances the reaction kinetics by reducing the barrier for FurCH₂O formation and accelerating proton-coupled electron transfer step. Compared with nano-island confined Pt catalyst, the confined Pt-Cu dilute alloy increases the TOF for furfural conversion from 849.3 to 1008.7 h –1 and for furfuryl alcohol from 383.9 to 657.7 h –1 , and demonstrates remarkable stability under demanding conditions (150 °C, 3 MPa H 2 ). These results demonstrate that the nano-islands confined dilute alloy strategy is promising for effectively maintaining metal stability and adjusting activity-selectivity balance.

CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol is severely constrained by thermodynamic equilibrium limitations and rapid catalyst deactivation at elevated temperatures. To address these challenges, a novel strategy integrating dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) non-thermal plasma (NTP) with Cu-Ce-Zr solid solution catalysts was adopted for low-temperature methanol synthesis. A series of Cu-Ce 1-x Zr x O 2 (x = 0.2–0.8) catalysts with varying Zr/Ce ratios were synthesized to systematically investigate the regulatory mechanism of lattice defects on the plasma-catalytic performance and the potential synergy between the plasma and catalyst. Characterization results revealed that an optimal Zr content (x = 0.6) maximized the surface oxygen vacancy concentration, generating abundant Ce 3+ -O v -Zr 4+ sites and stabilizing highly dispersed active Cu species. At near-ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure with optimal discharge parameters (30 kV, 9 kHz), the plasma-assisted Cu-Ce 0.4 Zr 0.6 O 2 system achieved CO 2 conversion of 20.5 % with methanol selectivity of 50.6 %, corresponding to methanol space–time yield of 148.4 mg·g cat -1 ·h −1 . A strong synergy was observed between the plasma and the Cu-Ce 0.4 Zr 0.6 O 2 catalyst. The plasma efficiently activated gas-phase molecules, while the catalyst regulated the hydrogenation pathway to promote CH 3 OH formation and suppress side reactions. Compared to the plasma-alone mode, the energy consumption for methanol production was reduced by 81.5 %, and the system exhibited excellent stability over 24 h of continuous operation. This work provides insights into the rational design of catalysts for application in NTP-catalytic systems.

Interfacial electronic coupling drives Cu-site-selective electron enrichment. • Electron-rich Cu centers facilitate rapid Cu 2+ /Cu + redox interconversion. • Regulated ROS evolution enables robust 1 O 2 -enriched Fenton catalysis. Efficient degradation of organic pollutants via Fenton-like catalysis remains a challenge due to the instability of the redox cycle under prolonged operation. Herein, we construct an interface-engineered FeCu layered double hydroxide/g-C 3 N 4 heterostructure (FeCu-LDH/g-C 3 N 4 ) to establish an internal electron-supply pathway for stabilizing Cu-centered redox cycling. Spectroscopic analyses, together with DFT calculations, support interface-induced electron redistribution, which favors electron depletion in the g-C 3 N 4 framework and preferential electron enrichment at Cu sites, promoting partial Cu 2+ reduction to Cu + , while Fe 3+ remains largely stable as a structural and electronic modulator. Benefiting from this site-selective electronic regulation, FeCu-LDH/g-C 3 N 4 exhibits markedly accelerated H 2 O 2 activation and achieves near-complete Rhodamine B degradation within 20 min, with a pseudo-first-order rate constant 4.6 times that of pristine FeCu-LDH. Active-site substitution confirms Cu as the primary redox center, while ROS quenching and electron paramagnetic resonance analyses identify 1 O 2 as the dominant oxidative species, accompanied by •OH and O 2 •- . The catalyst further shows robust recyclability, broad pH adaptability, and strong tolerance to humic substances and common ions. This work demonstrates a Cu-site-selective interfacial electron-regulation strategy for designing stable and efficient Fenton-like catalysts. Marine biofouling poses serious safety risks to offshore infrastructures and leads to substantial economic losses. Although hydrogels have shown significant promise in marine antifouling applications, developing antifouling hydrogels that simultaneously possess excellent mechanical strength and strong antifouling efficiency remains a major challenge. Herein, a high-performance antifouling hydrogel was constructed by incorporating hollow glass microspheres functionalized with a Cu(I) based metal-organic framework (Cu(I)-MOFs) into a poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PVA/PSBMA) double-network matrix. The as-developed Cu(I)-MOFs/hydrogel composite integrates excellent antifouling and mechanical properties, achieving protein and algal resistance of 99.8% and 99.9%, respectively, as well as a high antibacterial rate of 99.6%. Importantly, the composite reaches a compressive strength of 5.35 MPa, outperforming many existing antifouling hydrogels, and demonstrates low swelling with reliable performance in seawater. In a 100-day field test in a real marine environment, the fouling coverage of as-prepared hydrogel was as low as 0.12%. This work offers an effective and feasible strategy for preventing marine biofouling and also pioneers a new approach for hydrogel applications. The
electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR)
to produce multicarbon products represents a promising route
for sustainable carbon utilization. Copper-based catalysts are unique
in catalyzing C–C coupling, but the active Cu + species,
which favor ethylene formation, are prone to reduction during reaction.
In this work, we demonstrate that halogen doping, combined with a
nanoconfinement strategy, effectively stabilizes Cu + within
a nanoporous carbon matrix. Two model catalysts supported on porous
carbon spheres (Cu@C-1 derived from CuCl 2 and Cu@C-2 from
CuSO 4 ) were synthesized. After calcination, Cu@C-1 predominantly
comprises CuCl while Cu@C-2 mainly consists of Cu 2 O with
trace sulfur doping. They both have a similar average copper oxidation
state. During the CO 2 RR at −1.3 V versus the RHE,
the Cu@C-1 nanocatalyst achieves selective ethylene production with
a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 41.5% and a partial current density
of 110.7 mA cm –2 whereas the Cu@C-2 nanocatalyst
primarily generates methane (FE of 49.5% and partial current density
of 124.4 mA cm –2 ). In situ and postreaction characterizations
reveal that nanoscale confinement in Cu@C-1 maintains its CuCl phase
under the reaction conditions, which promotes the *COCHO intermediate
and facilitates C–C coupling toward ethylene. Conversely, Cu@C-2
nanoparticles are reduced to metallic Cu 0 , favoring the
methane pathway. This work highlights that tailoring the precursor
anion offers a precise level of control over the initial copper phase
and its dynamic state under electrolysis, thereby steering the CO 2 RR selectivity toward the desired products.
