Pd-Doping-Induced Oxygen Vacancies in One-Dimensional Tungsten Oxide Nanowires for Enhanced Acetone Gas Sensing

Ping Li,Ziwei Zhang,Zhihua Zhuang,Jinhan Guo,Zhongying Fang,Shemsu Ligani Fereja,Wei Chen

Metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) with different nanostructures have been widely used as gas sensing materials due to the tunable interface structures and properties. However, further improvement of the sensing sensitivity and selectivity is still challenging in this area. Constructing appropriate heterogeneous interface structures and oxygen vacancies is one of the important strategies to tune the sensing properties of MOS. In the present study, interfacial heterostructures in PdxW18O49 nanowires (PdxW18O49 NWs) were fabricated and manipulated by doping different Pd contents through a simple hydrothermal process. Relevant characterization proved that the structure and composition of the one-dimensional (1D) nanomaterial can be effectively changed by Pd doping. It was found that the oxygen vacancy concentration increases first with the increase of Pd content, and when the Pd content increases to 7.18% (Pd7.18%W18O49 NWs), the oxygen vacancy content reaches the maximum (52.5%). If the Pd content continues to increase, the oxygen vacancy ratio decreases. The gas sensing investigations illustrated that the PdxW18O49 NWs exhibited enhanced sensing properties than pure W18O49 NWs toward acetone. Among the as-prepared catalysts, the Pd7.18%W18O49 NWs showed the best sensing response and the fastest response-recovery speeds (5 and 10 s, respectively) at a working temperature of 175 °C. In addition, this 1D nanostructure with fabricated heterostructures also delivers a good sensing selectivity and a wide detection range from 100 ppb to 300 ppm, with maintaining excellent performance in the presence of high concentrations of ethanol and carbon dioxide. The excellent gas sensing behavior could be attributed to the generated oxygen vacancies and the heterostructures upon Pd doping. This study offers a novel strategy for the design of high-performance gas sensors for ppb-level acetone sensing.

A Hierarchical-Structured Impeller with Engineered Pd Nanoparticles Catalyzing Suzuki Coupling Reactions for High-Purity Biphenyl

Xueyan Sun,Shaofeng Li,Jinzhe Cao,Yuchao Wang,Wenbo Yang,Lijing Zhang,Yijin Liu,Jieshan Qiu,Shengyang Tao

Suzuki cross-coupling reactions catalyzed by palladium are authoritative protocols in fine-chemical synthesis. Mass transfer and catalyst activity are both significant factors affecting the reaction efficiency in heterogeneous reactions. Although the holistic catalysts hold great promise in heterogeneous reactions due to the enhanced mass transport and convenient recycling, the unsatisfied catalytic activity has impeded further large-scale applications. In addition, another pronounced barrier is the product separation in the intricate system. Here, the catalytic production and separation of biphenyl (purity of 99.7%) were achieved by integrating the Suzuki cross-coupling reactions and the crystallization separation for the first time. A hierarchical-structured impeller with Pd nanoparticles (NPs) loaded on the Ni(OH)2 nanosheets was prepared to catalyze the Suzuki reactions for bromobenzene, which exhibits a high turnover frequency (TOF) value of 25,976 h–1 and a yield of 99.5%. The X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) analysis has unveiled that the electron transfer between the Pd NPs and Ni(OH)2 accounts for the greatly enhanced catalytic activity. The findings inspire new insights toward rational engineering of highly efficient holistic catalysts for Suzuki reaction, and the innovative integrated technology offers an avenue for the separation and collection of products.

Dandelion-like Pd/Cu nanozyme with multi-enzyme activities: A colorimetric sensor array for PFAS discrimination

Hui-ting Hu,Xiao-mei Li,Wen-cai Jiang,Chen Ni,Yu-yang He,Guo-qi Zhang,Hao Yu,Zhi-Bo Hou

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were a class of hazardous contaminants known for their high environmental persistence and toxicity. Due to their strong polarity, wide variety, and broad distribution, a rapid, accurate, and on-site detection method was urgently needed for future screening and emergency response. Herein, a dandelion-like Pd/Cu nanozyme with triple enzyme-like activities (oxidase-like, peroxidase-like, and laccase-like) was synthesized by one-step hydrothermal method. Different PFAS species inhibited these three enzyme-like activities to varying extents. By quantifying absorbance changes, distinct fingerprint patterns were constructed, and a three-channel colorimetric sensor array was developed. This array exhibited high selectivity and robust anti-interference capability for discriminating seven PFAS species. The LDA score plot revealed distinct clustering of different PFAS classes and complex mixtures, indicating clear separability among their fingerprints. The developed nanozyme sensor array was successfully applied to the detection of PFAS in environmental water (river, lake, and tap water). This work provided a novel strategy for selective and reliable detection of PFAS in complex environmental matrices.

Ultrafast and ppb‑level acetoin detection using Pd‑loaded Cd2GeO4 chemiresistive sensors for food spoilage evaluation

Xudong Liang,Yuchen Duan,Xiangyu Li,Fujia Zhao,Yunwei Li,Yiming Jian,Lei Shi,Jiayu Li,Guo-Dong Li

Detection of 3-hydroxy-2-butanone (acetoin), a characteristic volatile metabolite of Listeria monocytogenes (LM) , represents a promising non-invasive strategy for monitoring contamination levels of foodborne pathogens in food. However, current sensing materials suffer from poor selectivity and insufficient sensitivity at trace concentrations. Herein, a series of Pd-loaded Cd 2 GeO 4 (Pd/CGO) chemiresistive gas sensors that achieves highly selective and sensitive acetoin detection was reported. Among them, the 0.5 wt% Pd/CGO-based sensor exhibits a high response, with an ultrafast response time and a detection limit as low as 10 ppb. The sensor also demonstrates excellent selectivity over common interfering gases, good reproducibility, and robust long-term stability. Mechanistic investigations combining O 2 -TPD, XPS, and DFT calculations reveal that Pd loading not only increases the proportion of chemisorbed oxygen species on the CGO surface, which enhances the overall sensing response, but also serves as new active sites. This work demonstrates that rational Pd modification combined with dual-site engineering offers a promising paradigm for designing high-performance metal oxide gas sensors for pathogen biomarker detection in food.

Ascorbic-acid-assisted hydrothermal synthesis of Pd-decorated WSe2 nanoflowers for high-performance NO2 gas sensing

Peicheng Han,Yunbo Shi,Canda Zheng,Bolun Tang,Qiaohua Feng

Green hydrothermal synthesis of flower-like WSe 2 using biodegradable ascorbic acid as the reducing agent. • Vacuum sintering at 450 ∘ ∘ C improved the crystallinity, surface activity, and charge transport of WSe 2 enhancing NO 2 sensing. • Optimal 3% Pd decoration enabled catalytic/interfacial sensitization, achieving a response of 2.26 toward 16 ppm NO 2 with good selectivity and stability. Although WSe 2 has shown great potential for NO 2 sensing, its development remains challenging because conventional hydrothermal synthesis often relies on hazardous reducing agents such as NaBH 4 and N 2 H 4 ⋅ 4⋅ H 2 O, which may cause rapid H 2 release, toxicity, and environmentally harmful byproducts. In addition, the sensing performance of WSe 2 is often limited by insufficient active sites and inefficient charge transfer. Herein, flower-like WSe 2 nanostructures were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal route using benign, biodegradable, eco-friendly, and cost-effective C 6 H 8 O 6 as the reducing agent. The obtained WSe 2 was vacuum-sintered at the optimized temperature of 450 ∘ ∘ C and further decorated with Pd nanoparticles to enhance NO 2 sensing performance. The optimized 3% Pd-WSe 2 -450 ∘ ∘ C sensor exhibited a response ( R a / R g Ra/Rg ) of 2.26 toward 16 ppm NO 2 at an operating temperature of 114 ∘ ∘ C, with response and recovery times of 20 and 190 s, respectively. The enhanced sensing performance is attributed to the synergistic effects of Pd decoration, improved crystallinity, abundant surface oxygen species, and efficient interfacial charge modulation. This work demonstrates a Pd-modified WSe 2 -based NO 2 gas sensor, where green synthesis, vacuum sintering, and interfacial Pd engineering synergistically enhance the sensing performance. A Pt/Pd-Decorated SnO2-Based Electronic Nose for High-Precision Breath Analysis in Diagnosing SIBO

Xinxin He,Ping Guo,Yinhua Hu,Xuyang An,Shuai Liang,Tiezhu Liu,Tong Zhang,Guohua Cai,Yanjie Chu,Jia Zhang

Exhaled human breath contains disease-related biomarkers, enabling non-invasive medical diagnostics. Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is traditionally diagnosed through hydrogen measurement, a method that offers limited specificity and sensitivity. Herein, we introduce a simplified Pt/Pd-SnO2 electronic composed of using only two sensing materials to achieve multi-gas detection. By simultaneously monitoring H2, CO, ethanol, and acetone, the system provides a more informative diagnostic profile than conventional single-marker tests. Furthermore, the electronic nose employs dual operating temperatures (135 and 190 °C) to enhance gas discrimination. Machine learning-assisted signal processing further optimizes the system’s ability to differentiate gases, enabling more accurate detection in clinical settings. It achieves a 93% classification accuracy and a mean squared error of 0.78 for gas concentration estimation. Importantly, the system was validated using real clinical breath samples collected after lactulose ingestion, where SIBO patients exhibited markedly elevated responses (7.62−18.77) compared to healthy individuals (2.45−4.91). This clinically validated, multi-gas platform offers improved accuracy and practical potential for SIBO diagnosis.

Catalytic-electronic coupling in Pd-decorated V2O5 nanoflowers enables low-temperature and low-power hydrogen sensing

Sirui Li,Hanwen Chi,Denghui Huang,Luqman Ali Khan,Kaixin Wang,Zicheng Zheng,Jianing Mao,Yunna Guo,Liqiang Zhang,Zhizhen Ye,Liping Zhu,Jie Jiang

Pd-decorated V 2 O 5 nanoflowers enable enhanced H2 response and detectable room-temperature sensing. • DRIFTS and DFT reveal catalytic-electronic coupling that promotes H2 dissociation, spillover, and charge transfer. • MEMS-integrated sensors achieve ultralow power consumption of 7.2 mW for portable H2 safety detection. Reliable hydrogen detection under high concentrations and low power consumption is crucial for ensuring safety in industrial environments. Here, we report Pd-decorated V 2 O 5 nanoflowers synthesized via a hydrothermal-impregnation route that achieve a high response of 13.43 to 2000 ppm H 2 at 75 °C—nearly six times that of pristine V 2 O 5 (2.32 at 200 °C)—along with excellent repeatability, selectivity, humidity tolerance, and long-term stability. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) measurements reveal the formation of Pd H and V 4+  = O species even at room temperature and density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations indicate enhanced charge transfer and reduced adsorption energy at the Pd/V 2 O 5 interface. These findings confirm a strong catalytic-electronic coupling effect, in which Pd catalyzes hydrogen dissociation and spillover, while interfacial electron redistribution and vacancy-mediated activation dramatically lower the reaction barrier. This synergistic coupling enables sensitive hydrogen sensing at significantly reduced temperatures. Integration of the Pd/V 2 O 5 layer into a Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) platform yields an ultralow power consumption of 7.2 mW, demonstrating promising potential for miniaturized, energy-efficient hydrogen-sensing technologies.

Multimodal imaging-guided NIR-II photo-gas nanoplatform amplifies PD-1 blockade for synergistic TNBC therapy

Linlin Song,Meixu Chen,Huiling Wang,Xin Wang,Tianyue Xu,Heqing Zhang,Shuwen Ran,Liwen Huang,Yingying Ma,Zhihui Liu,Zihan Xu,Yujie Zhao,Zichang Liu,Yong Luo,Xiujun Yu,Yulan Peng,Hubing Shi,Jing Jing,Xiujing He

Rationale Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) remains one of the most aggressive subtypes due to its poor immunogenicity and resistance to systemic therapies. Methods Here, we report a multifunctional NIR-II light-triggered theranostic nanoplatform, termed LQPO, that integrates liposome, Ti 3 C 2 quantum dots (QDs), perfluorohexane (PFH), and ozone to enable multimodal imaging-guided photo-gas synergistic therapy. The QDs, embedded within the liposomal bilayer, act as highly efficient NIR-II photothermal transducers, while the PFH core serves as a liquid-gas phase-change medium capable of dissolving and releasing ozone under localized heating. Results Upon NIR-II irradiation, LQPO produced strong photothermal and photoacoustic signals for real-time photoacoustic (PA) and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) imaging, accompanied by vaporization of the PFH core and burst release of ozone. This spatiotemporally coordinated cascade induced potent oxidative stress and hyperthermia, synergistically driving GSDME-dependent pyroptosis and immunogenic cell death (ICD). The resulting “in situ vaccination” effect remodeled the tumor immune microenvironment and primed tumors for PD-1 blockade therapy. In vivo , NIR-II-activated LQPO achieved efficient tumor accumulation, strong PA/CEUS imaging contrast, and pronounced inhibition of both primary and abscopal tumors when combined with αPD-1 therapy. No significant systemic toxicity was observed, confirming its favorable biosafety. Conclusions Overall, this study establishes a single-laser-activated nanoplatform that unifies real-time multimodal imaging and photo-gas synergistic therapy, and converts localized treatment into a systemic antitumor immune response upon integration with checkpoint inhibition.

Tunning Pd local environments for catalytic oxidation of light VOCs and CO: influence of Ce addition

Weiwei Yang,Tengbin He,Weijie Huang,Yan Zhang,Wenpo Shan,Taicheng An

The geometric interplay in heterogeneous catalysis plays a crucial role in determining the catalytic performance. Based on the stronger affinity of Pd for ceria (CeO 2 ) than for titanium oxide (TiO 2 ) found in this work, we strategically engineered distinct Pd local environments by controlling the architecture of CeO x on TiO 2 through adjusting Ce content. At low Ce content, Pd preferentially assembles onto CeO x islands that are interspersed on TiO 2 ; while at high Ce content, Pd predominantly anchors onto the extensive CeO x surface. The former structure, enriched with CeO x -TiO 2 interface, exhibits superior capability in C-H bond cleavage and O 2 activation, leading to outstanding performance in the oxidation of carbon-containing gases such as light volatile organic compounds (VOCs; e.g., ethane and ethylene) and carbon monoxide (CO). In contrast, the structure dominated by continuous CeO 2 networks shows markedly lower activity. Combined analyses indicate that Pd 2+ species act as the primary active sites, and the consistent activity trend across differently Ce-modified catalysts in VOCs and CO oxidation can be explained by shared mechanistic steps, particularly through common CO and bicarbonate species intermediates. This work provides fundamental insight into the relationship between interfacial geometry and catalytic function.

Interfacial engineering of Pd/In2O3 regulates Pd0/oxygen vacancy balance for efficient CO2 hydrogenation to formate

Yinying Shu,Songqi Li,Yuquan Li,Cheng Zheng,Xiaogang Yang,Yahui Cai,Zhengying Wu,Jundie Hu,Jiafu Qu

Interfacial engineering enables Pd 0 /oxygen vacancy balance in Pd/In 2 O 3 . • Hollow In 2 O 3 nanotubes moderate Pd-In 2 O 3 metal-support interaction. • Pd/h-In 2 O 3 achieves 8020 mmol FA mol Pd −1  h −1 for formate production. • Pd 0 retention and defect accessibility jointly govern formate formation. The catalytic performance of oxide-supported Pd catalysts in CO 2 hydrogenation is highly dependent on the interfacial cooperation between metallic Pd 0 sites and defect-containing oxide domains. However, how to regulate this metal-oxide interfacial balance to simultaneously promote H 2 activation and CO 2 -derived intermediate conversion remains insufficiently understood. Herein, we develop an interfacial engineering strategy to regulate the balance between metallic Pd 0 sites and oxygen vacancies (Ov) in Pd/In 2 O 3 catalysts through morphology-dependent metal-support interaction (MSI). Structural analyses reveal that hollow In 2 O 3 nanotubes (h-In 2 O 3 ) effectively moderate Pd-In 2 O 3 interactions, preserve a higher fraction of metallic Pd 0 , and maintain accessible defect-associated oxide domains, thereby establishing a more favorable interfacial configuration than compact counterparts. Consequently, Pd/h-In 2 O 3 delivers the highest formate production rate of 8178 ± 145 mmol FA mol Pd −1  h −1 at 60 °C and 2 MPa, representing a sixfold enhancement over rod-like Pd/In 2 O 3 (Pd/r-In 2 O 3 ), together with excellent stability. These findings highlight that the coordinated regulation of metallic-site preservation and defect accessibility is critical for constructing efficient metal-oxide interfaces for CO 2 hydrogenation to formate. Interfacial engineering optimizes the Pd 0 /Ov balance in Pd/In 2 O 3 by moderating metal-support interaction, enabling high formate productivity (8178 ± 145 mmol FA mol Pd −1  h −1 ) in CO 2 hydrogenation. Zeolite Y-Encapsulated Pd Single Atoms and Clusters: Unlocking Stepwise Synergy for Low-Temperature Propane Oxidation

Tianyao He,Yuzhen Zhang,Gan Li,Xiang Tu,Fengqing Zhuo,Jian Ji,Fengbo Yu,Guobo Li,Wenming Liu,Lu Wei,Jiguang Deng,Weili Dai,Honggen Peng

We report the rational design and precise construction of Y zeolite-encapsulated Pd catalysts featuring coexisting single atoms and clusters (Pd1+n@Y) that enable the efficient and low-temperature total oxidation of propane. Fine tuning of Pd loading and synthesis conditions in a PVP-assisted one-pot hydrothermal approach affords controllable confinement of dual active sites (isolated Pd single atoms and clusters). Catalytic evaluations reveal that Pd1+n@Y exhibits a T90 of only 265 °C, significantly outperforming the single-site counterparts (Pd1@Y and Pdn@Y). Combining density functional theory (DFT) calculations with in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) studies elucidates a stepwise synergistic mechanism wherein Pd single atoms preferentially activate the C–H bond in propane to form alkyl intermediates, while Pd clusters facilitate O2 activation and C–C bond cleavage to complete oxidation. This work establishes a robust “single atom–cluster” synergistic paradigm for designing advanced catalysts for the abatement of light alkanes.

Interfacial Modification of Pd/ZrO2 Catalyst by Atomic-Layer In2O3 for Enhanced CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol

Xing Yan,Dongren Cai,Jiachang Li,Chuanlong Ran,Kok Bing Tan,Ahmad Zuhairi Abdullah,Sajid Ali,Yingfeng Chen,Guowu Zhan

Abstract Although Pd/ZrO2 represents a highly promising catalyst for CO2 hydrogenation, it still faces challenges such as low methanol selectivity and intense competing side reactions. In this study, we precisely constructed an In2O3 interfacial layer between Pd and ZrO2 by atomic layer deposition (denoted as Pd/xIn2O3/ZrO2, where x represents the number of atomic layer deposition cycles) and systematically investigated the role of this interlayer in modulating the catalyst microstructure, reaction pathways, and methanol selectivity. Catalytic performance evaluation results reveal that under reaction conditions of 320 °C and 3 MPa, the Pd/10In2O3/ZrO2 catalyst exhibits the best performance for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol, whereby the methanol selectivity was significantly enhanced from 6.6% to 76.6%, and the methanol space-time yield increased by approximately 6 times (2.40 vs. 13.37 gMeOH·gPd–1·h–1) when compared to pristine Pd/ZrO2 catalyst. Multifaceted characterization and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy demonstrate that the introduction of In2O3 substantially strengthens CO2 adsorption and activation, promotes further hydrogenation of the key CO* intermediate, and establishes a dual-path synergistic mechanism involving both formate and CO-hydrogenation routes, thereby effectively suppressing the formation of the byproduct CO. Collectively, this work demonstrates that catalyst interface engineering via atomic layer deposition provides an effective strategy for tuning the reaction network and optimizing methanol selectivity in catalytic CO2 hydrogenation systems.
