Soluble Hydroxy-Containing Poly(benzoxazole-benzimidazole-imide)s for Membrane-Based H2/CO2 Separation

Fan Hu,Jinpeng Luo,Shichao Feng,Liangqiang Wei,Shinji Ando,Yinhua Wan,Yongbing Zhuang

Conventional polyimide (PI) membranes exhibit low H2/CO2 selectivity (≤3.1). To address this limitation, this study synthesized a novel diamine monomer, 5-amino-2-(4-hydroxy-3-aminobenzene)-benzoxazole (OH-BOA), specifically designed with benzoxazole and hydroxyl functionalities. Subsequently, OH-BOA and its structural counterpart 5-amino-2-(4-hydroxy-3-aminobenzene)-benzimidazole (OH-BIA) were copolymerized with pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) to yield four hydroxy-functionalized poly(benzoxazole-benzimidazole-imide)s (OH-CoPIs). These OH-CoPIs exhibited good solubility, robust mechanical properties (tensile strength ≥ 114.9 MPa), high glass transition temperatures (Tg > 400 °C), and low coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE ≤ 28.3 ppm/K). Notably, they achieved a significantly enhanced H2/CO2 selectivity of up to 12.2, surpassing the commercial Matrimid 5218 (3.1) by 4-fold. Systematic evaluation revealed that increasing benzoxazole content reduced the CTE while enhancing tensile strength, Young’s modulus, and H2/CO2 selectivity. The thermally rearranged membrane (TR-40CoPI-400, 400 °C) achieved high H2 permeability (26.00 Barrer) with optimal selectivity (7.6) and exceptional CO2 plasticization resistance. The synergistic integration of benzimidazole, benzoxazole, and hydroxyl groups enables high-performance PI membranes for H2/CO2 separation.

Highly efficient photocatalytic degradation of unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine with 001-TiO2/CeO2 S-scheme heterojunction

Yizhi Zeng,Xianghong Ren

Unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine is a high-energy liquid rocket fuel widely utilized in the aerospace field. Its highly toxic nature poses a significant threat to the ecosystem and human health, necessitating the urgent development of efficient and environmentally friendly treatment technologies. In this study, a (001) crystal facet-dominated 001-TiO 2 /CeO 2 S-scheme heterojunction was constructed via a solvent hydrothermal-photoassisted method. Under simulated solar light irradiation, the catalyst demonstrated a degradation efficiency of 98.4 % for high-concentration Unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine wastewater (100 mg/L) within 140 min, while effectively decomposing highly toxic intermediates with a mineralization rate reaching 84.5 %. This is attributed to the synergistic interaction between the crystal facet effect and the S-scheme heterojunction, which significantly enhances the spatial separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers. The intermediate products were identified using solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPME-GC–MS), revealing the possible degradation pathways of Unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine and elucidating the reaction mechanism. This study offers a viable approach for the efficient degradation of Unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine wastewater, offering significant reference value for advancing wastewater treatment in the aerospace industry.

N,S-Co-doping enhances tribological properties of solvent-free covalent carbon dot nanofluids

Baokai Zhang,Yanming Wang,Xian-Qiang Pei,Xiaoliang Zhang,Gai Zhao,Qihua Wang,Tingmei Wang

Solvent-free nanofluids have attracted increasing attention in tribological applications due to their distinctive load-bearing lubrication mechanisms, which arise from the synergistic interaction between its surrounding corona/canopy structures. In this study, a nanofluid was developed by incorporating N,S-co-doped carbon dots (N,S-CDs) and Jeffamine M2070 into polyimide (PI) matrix. This composite reduced the COF by 61 % (0.15 ± 0.01) and the wear rate by 95 % (3 ± 0.1643) × 10 −6 mm 3 /N·m compared to pure PI. N,S-CDs adsorbed onto friction surfaces via -NH 2 and -COOH groups, enhancing interfacial bonding and raising peak interface temperature by 126 K. This promoted PI fragment graphitization and robust tribofilms formation. M2070 further smoothed the interface by filling voids. The work proposes a “core-resin interface with casing” strategy for tribological materials in high-load, precision applications.

Heterogeneous S-NiFe2O4@NiSe2 nanospheres for the oxygen evolution reaction with long-term stability

Fangyuan Fan,Chunlin Teng,Rongjin Zhu,Lina Zhu,Lingfei Xu,Yeshuang Du

Electrochemical water-splitting is a potential “green” approach to produce a large amount of hydrogen. However, its half reaction, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), suffers sluggish dynamics and huge overpotential. This encumbers the energy conversion efficiency from electric energy to hydrogen energy, resulting in cost increases. Besides, rare metal catalysts such as RuO2 and IrO2 have high OER catalytic activity but they are low in reserve and expensive. Hence, exploration of highly efficient, stable and cheap transition metal-based electrocatalysts to speed up the OER rate is a rational approach. Herein, S-doped NiFe2O4@NiSe2 nanospheres supported on nickel foam were synthesized through a simple one-pot hydrothermal method. Thanks to the unique structure, large surface area, numerous active sites, incorporation of S-anion atoms and synergistic effect between different components, S-doped NiFe2O4@NiSe2 nanospheres showed extraordinarily efficient electrocatalytic activity towards the OER in alkaline medium. When the current density was 10 mA cm−2, the OER overpotential was 190 mV. Meanwhile, it exhibited excellent long-term stability and was maintained at 10 mA cm−2 for ≥94 h in a chronopotentiometry test.

N-S Co-Doped WC Nanoparticles Show High Catalytic Activity in Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Zhaobin Lu,Baoxin Wang,Shengtao Li,Feiyan Pan,Xuewei Zhu,Xiaofeng Wei

In the “dual carbon” objective, the preparation of non-precious metal catalysts with low cost and high activity is essential for the study of hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs). This study employed biomass pomelo peel powder as the carbon source and ammonium metatungstate (AMT) as the tungsten source and, through a facile one-step method in molten salt, fabricated a biomass carbon-based nanocatalyst featuring carbon flakes adorned with tungsten carbide (WC) nanoparticles. Dicyandiamide and cysteine were introduced as nitrogen and sulfur sources, respectively, to explore the impacts of N-S elemental doping on the structure, composition, and HER performance of the WC/C catalyst. The experimental results showed that N-S doping changed the electronic structure of WC and increased the electrochemically active surface area, resulting in a significant increase in the HER activity of WC/C@N-S catalysts. The WC/C@N-S catalyst was evaluated with hydrogen evolution performance in a 0.5 mol/L H2SO4solution. When the cathodic current density reached 10 mA/cm2, the overpotential was 158 mV, and the Tafel slope was 68 mV/dec, underscoring its excellent HER performance. The outcomes offer novel insights into the high-value utilization of agricultural biomass resources, and pave the way for the development of cost-effective, innovative hydrogen evolution catalysts.

Interfacial Engineering of S-Scheme WO3/In2S3 Heterojunction for Efficient Solar-Driven CO2 Photoreduction

Yameng Wang,Ao Xu,Jihui Lang,Bin Zuo,Zihan Yu,Keyu Cui,Xuefei Li,Kewei Zhang,Xin Li,Maobin Wei,Jian Cao

CO2photoreduction technology offers significant potential for addressing energy and environmental challenges, though its practical application is hindered by insufficient photo-absorption and rapid carrier recombination. Herein, we constructed the WO3/In2S3S-scheme heterojunction through hydrothermal assembly of two-dimensional WO3nanosheets and scale-like In2S3nanoflakes. Systematic characterization via XRD, XPS, SEM, and TEM verified the successful preparation of hierarchical nanostructures with optimized interfacial contact in the WO3/In2S3composites. UV-Vis DRS analysis showed that the photo-absorption range of the catalyst was significantly widened. Photoelectrochemical investigations (EIS, TPR, PL, and LSV) revealed enhanced carrier separation efficiency and reduced recombination kinetics in the heterojunction system. The optimized WO3/In2S3(WI-60) catalyst had a CO evolution efficiency of 55.14 μmol·g−1under the UV-Vis light, representing a 3.9-fold enhancement over the pure In2S3(14.08 μmol·g−1). Mechanistic studies through the XPS and band-structure analysis confirmed the establishment of an S-scheme carrier’ transfer pathway, which simultaneously preserved strong redox potentials and promoted the separation process of carriers. This research provides a validated strategy for developing efficient S-scheme photocatalytic systems for solar fuel generation.

Cuttlebone inspired “S”-grooved topological structures facilitate osteogenic differentiation through the Rap1-ERK pathway

Ying Sun,Yining Cai,Shanshan Xu,Ningning Zhai,Zirui Wang,Zongpu Qiu,Shuying Han,Yuanqing Wei,Rui Liu,Hao Wu

While the regulatory roles of biomaterial topology in bone regeneration are recognized, the specific osteogenic mechanisms driven by distinct morphological features, particularly without biochemical cues, remain poorly understood. This study aimed to independently elucidate the osteogenic potential and underlying mechanisms solely attributable to the distinctive “S”-grooved topology derived from cuttlebone. Inspired by cuttlebone, we successfully fabricated a biomimetic polycaprolactone (PCL) membranes sheet with “S”-grooved topology using liquid silicone mold replication combined with PCL recasting techniques. Comprehensive characterization (SEM, CLSM) confirmed precise replication of the native “S”-grooved morphology (width: 100 ± 30 μm, depth: 20 ± 6 μm). In vitro studies revealed that these grooves promoted directional adhesion and proliferation of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSCs) via contact guidance, as evidenced by cytoskeleton alignment. Furthermore, the “S”-grooved topology significantly enhanced osteogenic differentiation of mouse pre-osteoblasts (MC3T3-E1), demonstrated by increased alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and mineralized nodule formation. Mechanistic investigations using RT-qPCR, Western blot, and dimethyl labeling-based quantitative proteomics on rBMSCs identified key involvement of the Rap1-ERK signaling pathway. Specifically, the “S”-grooved topology upregulated Rap1 expression and enhanced ERK phosphorylation, leading to increased expression of osteogenic markers (e.g., Runx2, OPN). These findings demonstrate that the biomimetic “S”-grooved topology alone, through contact guidance and activation of the Rap1-ERK mechanotransduction pathway, significantly enhances osteogenic differentiation, providing a foundation for designing topologically optimized biomaterials for bone regeneration biomimetic PCL membranes sheet with the “S”-grooved topology.

S-scheme heterojunction fabricated from donor–acceptor COF-R/NVCN photocatalytic degradation of chlorophenols

Jinzhi Cao,Yilin Zhao,Meihui Chen,Zhiyi Zhao,Yuhan Xiong,Dingding Tang,Yan Zhou,Xiong Qin,Nanqi Ren,Hui Wang,Jie Ding

Visible light-driven degradation of chlorophenols using metal-free photocatalysts has attracted significant attention. Two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) exhibited high levels of visible-light activity. To address the challenges of insufficient redox capacity and recombination of photogenerated carriers of COFs, an S-scheme heterojunction is constructed from COFs with nitrogen vacancies modified graphitic carbon nitride (NVCN) to improve photocatalytic activity. Introducing electron donors (-OH and -C C) into COF could reduce the optical band gap and increase visible-light absorption. Meanwhile, they can form donor-acceptor (D-A) effects with nitrogen vacancies, thereby redistributing charge and enhancing the transfer rate of photogenerated electrons. Formation of S-scheme heterojunction effectively enhances the migration of photogenerated carriers and redox ability, the optimized heterojunction (COF-C C/NVCN) was able to degrade 98 % 4-chlorophenol within 90 min under visible light irradiation ( k  = 0.044 min –1 ), which was 10–12 times higher than COF-H/NVCN or NVCN. This study provides the great potential of D-A COF/NVCN-based S-scheme heterojunctions for environmental remediation.

Construction of BiOI/UiO-66(Ce/Fe) S-scheme heterojunction for enhancing photocatalytic activity

Rongrong Yu,Jingjing Wang,Xinyu Zhi,Danyi Yang,Yongqi Zhao,Guifeng Chen,Chengchun Tang,Yi Fang

With growing concerns about antibiotic contamination in water environments, developing efficient photocatalysts for tetracycline (TC) degradation has become imperative. In this study, a novel nanoflower-like BiOI/UiO-66(Ce/Fe) S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst was developed for efficient TC degradation under visible light. Experimental evaluations revealed that the optimized 0.05-Bi/U(Ce/Fe) sample achieved 99.5 % TC degradation efficiency, maintaining 88.8 % of its initial activity after four consecutive cycles. The superior photocatalytic activity arises from three synergistic mechanisms: Fe 3+ doping modulates the band structure to broaden visible-light absorption, while the synergistic effect of Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ and Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox pairs optimizes charge transport. The internal electric field at the BiOI/UiO-66(Ce/Fe) heterojunction enhances charge separation while maximizing the redox capacity of the photocatalyst. Radical capture experiments and LC-MS analysis confirmed ·O 2 − and ·OH as the dominant reactive radicals, with proposed possible degradation pathways. Thus, a new synergistic strategy for designing efficient photocatalysts is proposed in this work.

Cu2O/WO3 S-scheme heterojunctions for photocatalytic degradation of levofloxacin based on coordination activation

Qi Chen,Ling Hu,Yingzhang Shi,Cheng Liu,Yidong Hou,Jinhong Bi,Jimmy C. Yu,Ling Wu

Heterogeneous photocatalytic degradation of antibiotic involves the activation of antibiotic molecules and the photocatalytic oxidation process. However, the simultaneous improvement of these processes is still a challenge. Herein, S-scheme heterojunctions consisted of Cu 2 O nanocluster with defective WO 3 nanosheets were constructed for efficient photocatalytic degradation of levofloxacin (LVX). The typical CNS-5 composite (5 wt% Cu 2 O/WO 3 ) achieves an optimal LVX degradation efficiency of 97.9% within 80 min. The spatial charge separation and enhancement of redox capacity were realized by the formation of S-scheme heterojunction between Cu 2 O and WO 3 . Moreover, their interfacial interaction would lead to the loss of lattice oxygen and the generation of W 5+ sites. It is witnessed that the C–N of piperazine ring and C O of carboxylic acid in LVX are coordinated with W 5+ sites to build the electronic bridge to activate LVX, greatly promoting the further degradation. This work highlights the important role of selective coordination activation cooperated with S-type heterojunctions for the photocatalytic degradation and offers a new view to understand the degradation of antibiotics at molecular level.
