Rationally-designed N, P- codoped carbon-supported Ru as efficient catalyst for alkaline hydrogen oxidation

Nan Li,Xiaomi Xie,Mimi Zhang,Sitao Fang,Zifu Du,Loujun Gao,Lei Lv,Jianzhang Zhou,Deyin Wu,Rui Li,Xuan Jian

Developing efficient, stable and CO-tolerant electrocatalysts for alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) is vital for hydrogen fuel cells. Herein, we report a phytic acid-modified polyaniline-derived N, P-codoped porous carbon supported ruthenium catalyst (Ru/PA-Ani) for alkaline HOR. The catalyst exhibits an outstanding anodic current density of 8.97 mA cm −2 at 50 mV overpotential over 10 times higher than Ru/Ani and much better than commercial Pt/C. Mechanistic study suggested that the phosphate groups of Ru/PA-Ani catalyst establish a stable complexation system with polyaniline, and the molecular orbital distribution features of its HOMO and LUMO afford molecular-level support for the valence state modulation of Ru 3+ Meanwhile, N, P co-doping optimizes active site dispersion and electronic structure, promoting OH* generation and charge transport. This work provides an effective strategy for high-performance HOR catalysts and guides the design of low cost, stable anode catalysts for alkaline fuel cells.

NH4PF6-induced P-doping and surface restructuring: Route to superior lithium storage performance of MXene

Yunhao Wu,Yizhan Gao,Jiaxuan Li,Zhen Wang,Zhigang Shao,Juan Zhang,Jianling Li

2D layered MXene, which holds multiple outstanding properties, like large specific surface area, abundant functional groups, and ultra-high electronic conductivity, have been an attractive anode material for lithium-ion energy storage. However, its practical application is greatly hindered by its limited capacity. Aiming at addressing this problem, this article innovatively proposes to mix NH 4 PF 6 with MXene for sintering, achieving P-doping between MXene layers and the transformation of Ti O and Ti-O-P functional groups. After 1700 cycles of 150 mA g −1 , the modified material still has a high specific capacity of over 250 mAh g −1 , and after 800 cycles of 1500 mA g −1 high current, it still has a capacity retention rate of over 100%. The in-situ XRD, XPS, DFT calculations and other methods have been used to demonstrate that the uniformly distributed phosphorus rich functional groups between MXene layers significantly expand the interlayer spacing, provide more active sites for lithium-ion storage, effectively promote Li + adsorption, and improve capacity and rate performance.

Surface localized p-n homojunctions in two-dimensional ultrathin titanium oxide with remarkable photocatalytic activity

Feihong Zeng,Fangyuan Zhao,Xinyu Su,Qiang Wang,Zhibo Liu,Chao Zhen,Yong Liu,Gang Liu,Wencai Ren,Gaorong Han,Zongping Chen

Constructing p-n homojunctions while confining them on the surface of two-dimensional (2D) photocatalyst is a highly promising way to promote charge separation and thus improve the photocatalytic performance, yet they have rarely been achieved thus far. Here, we prepare 2D titanium oxide nanosheets enriched with both n-type oxygen vacancies and p-type titanium vacancies that form surface localized p-n homojunctions. The built-in electric field of the homojunctions promotes the unidirectional movement and separation of photogenerated carriers. Moreover, the p-n homojunctions confined to the surface of the ultrathin nanosheet can interact directly with the reactants, which reduces the recombination probability of electron-hole pairs. As a result, these p-n homojunctions enable an outstanding photocatalytic activity for water decontamination which is 30 times higher than that of benchmark titanium oxide. These results provide new opportunities for design and engineering of defects of 2D photocatalysts, potentially driving technological breakthroughs for energy conversion and environmental remediation.

Charge Redistribution via d–p Hybridization in NiCoP Supported on Ni5P4 Boosts Alkaline Hydrogen Production

Junjie Hu,Yan Sang,Jingwei Xue,Rui Zhang,Lingmei Zhou,Ziqing Meng,Tianchen Ma,Lijuan Chen

Transition-metal phosphides (TMPs) are promising electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but their industrial-scale application is limited by sluggish water dissociation kinetics and insufficient active site exposure under alkaline conditions. Herein, we demonstrate orbital hybridization engineering in Ni5P4/NiCoP-1 heterostructures fabricated via controlled phosphorization and magnetically modulated electrodeposition (MME). COMSOL simulations, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the heterointerface activates covalent Ni/Co–P bonding through optimized d–p orbital hybridization, leading to favorable electron density redistribution and an upshifted d-band center (ΔE = 0.061 eV). These electronic modifications synergistically enhance OH– adsorption energetics and accelerate water dissociation kinetics. Simultaneously, the strengthened metal–phosphorus bonds endow exceptional corrosion resistance under chloride-rich seawater conditions. As a result, Ni5P4/NiCoP-1 achieves excellent HER performance, requiring ultralow overpotentials of 266 and 325 mV to achieve a current density of 1000 mA cm–2 in 1.0 M KOH and seawater at pH 14, respectively, while maintaining stable operation for 200 h. In a two-electrode electrolyzer, the system requires only 1.62 V to reach 100 mA cm–2 in urea-assisted alkaline seawater, surpassing most reported TMP-based catalysts. The practical applicability is further verified by successfully powering a hydrogen-powered prototype vehicle. This work not only provides mechanistic insights into interfacial electronic structure modulation via d–p orbital hybridization but also establishes MME as a universal approach for high-rate hydrogen production from alkaline freshwater and seawater.

Mitigation of P. gingivalis-exacerbated intestinal inflammation by paeoniflorin through alteration of the gut microbiota

Ru Qu,Ming Li,Ping Li,Ying Song,Biao Dong,Juan Liu,Xuan Mo,Zhenjiang Zech Xu,Xiaochang Huang

Porphyromonas gingivalis is a well-known periodontal pathogen that has also been linked to systemic diseases. In this study, our results revealed that P. gingivalis exacerbated inflammation, as indicated by weight loss, decreased colon length, and increased colonic tissue inflammation. Furthermore, P. gingivalis increased the population of Th17 cells in the spleen and upregulated the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in mice. Additionally, P. gingivalis aggravated the gut microbiota dysbiosis by reducing the beneficial bacteria like S24-7. In addition, we discovered that paeoniflorin, a widely recognized biologically active phytochemical, had the potential to mitigate the exacerbated inflammation caused by P. gingivalis. Specifically, paeoniflorin treatment rebalanced immune cell populations, reduced the levels of inflammatory cytokines, and reshaped the composition of the gut microbiota. In summary, our findings suggest that paeoniflorin holds promise as a potential therapeutic agent for alleviating the inflammatory effects induced by P. gingivalis.

Optimizing electrical properties correlated with SCLC mechanism in BiFeO3/P(VDF-TrFE) multilayer composite films

Dongxue Luo,Ronghua Qin,Minghang Song,Lingfang Xu,Tian Liang,Yalong Ge,Changping Yang

BiFeO 3 has profuse physical properties in multiferroics. However, significant leakage current constrains its utility in practical applications. In this paper, we synergistically embed BiFeO 3 nanoparticles in a ferroelectric crystal P(VDF-TrFE) base and use barrier layers to reduce the leakage current and promote the ferroelectric performance. Our finding indicate that the multilayer BiFeO 3 /P(VDF-TrFE) composite films equipped with barrier layers exhibit a leakage current below the magnitude of microampere level, a 99 % reduction compared to single-layer films. Additionally, the effective remnant ferroelectric polarization reaches 16 μC/cm 2 , a 66 % improvement. We combined the conductive mechanism analysis by fitting I - V curves and constructing energy band structures, uncovering that the essence of the optimization characteristics is related to a Space-Charge-Limited Conduction (SCLC) mechanism in the multilayer composite films. This research offers potential film solutions for a variety of electrical devices, supported by both experimental and theoretical perspectives.

Flower-like ZnFe2O4/BiOI type p-n heterojunction nanorods facilitating the efficient degradation of tetracycline

Hao Yang,Junbin Xie,Xiangyu Li,Zhao Liu,Guixiang Teng,Zhongli Zhao,Jie He,Chun Zhang

Given the accelerated pace of industrial development and the escalating issue of water pollution, the development of high-efficiency and energy-saving materials for the degradation of organic pollutants is imperative. Consequently, the development of heterojunction photocatalytic materials has emerged as one of the most promising strategies. In this study, n-type semiconductor ZnFe 2 O 4 nanorods and p-type semiconductor BiOI nanoflowers were utilized to construct a type p-n heterojunction ZnFe 2 O 4 /BiOI, exhibiting a significantly larger specific surface area of 38.72 m 2 /g, which is 4.6 times greater than that of ZnFe 2 O 4 (8.30 m 2 /g). The density functional theory calculations reveal that the formation of the heterojunction substantially improves the electron transport efficiency and markedly suppresses the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers, primarily due to the establishment of a p-n heterostructure. Moreover, the degradation efficiency of tetracycline achieved an impressive rate of 94.8 %. The degradation efficiency remained above 90 % following three photocatalytic reaction cycle tests.

Fe-Co dual-sites p-d orbital hybridization: Electronic restructuring for accelerated oxygen evolution kinetics

Hui Su,Furong Ye,Siyi Zhang,Changcun Han,Jipeng Dong,Zhixin Dai,Xinguo Ma,Lei Ge

The sluggish anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics remains a critical bottleneck for sustainable hydrogen production via water electrolysis. Guided by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, we engineered Fe-CoS 2 /Ni 3 S 4 dual-site catalysts where Co 3+ and Fe 3+ centers synergistically optimize p-d orbital hybridization to enhance OER kinetics. Operando analyses reveal Co 3+ as primary active sites facilitating rate-limiting OOH* → O 2 desorption with Gibbs free energy (ΔG) reduced by 0.94 eV, while Fe-induced electron delocalization lowers intermediate coupling barriers. Notably, the catalyst facilitates dynamic reconstruction, generating metastable Co 3+ species with optimized eg orbital occupancy (t 2 g 5 eg 1 configuration) and strengthened p-d hybridization via Fe-mediated charge transfer. This electronic synergy enables ultralow overpotentials of 156 mV (hydrogen evolution reaction HER) and 230 mV (OER) at 50 mA cm −2 , with a cell voltage of 1.48 V for overall water splitting at 10 mA cm −2 . The dual-site architecture simultaneously suppresses metal dissolution (<12 % after 20 h) while maintaining 89.2 % initial activity. This work establishes a dual-regulation strategy: atomic-level orbital engineering for OER intermediate optimization and dynamic surface reconstruction for HER-active phase stabilization, offering a paradigm for designing robust bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Durable flame-retardant cotton fabric modified by water-soluble C–N–P intumescent flame retardant

Yuanyu Ge,Zhenming Qi,Desheng Sha,Xiaosai Hu,Shiwen Liu

Intumescent flame retardant (IFR) is the new generation of environmentally friendly flame retardant. The improved water solubility of IFR enhances its application in cellulose-based textiles. A water-soluble carbon–nitrogen–phosphorus (C–N–P) ternary IFR (PTETP) was synthesized using cyanuric chloride (TCT), ethylene glycol (EG), and O-phosphoethanolamine (O-PEA) as starting materials. The burning performance of untreated and PTETP treated cotton fabrics was evaluated using vertical flammability test (VFT), limiting oxygen index (LOI), and cone calorimetry. The results indicate that with the increase of PTETP content, the flame retardant performance of cotton fabrics is gradually enhanced. The cotton fabric treated with 10 wt% PTETP shows no afterflame combustion, has a char length of 98 mm, and a LOI of 30.8%. Compared with pristine cotton fabric, the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release (THR) of the treated cotton fabric were reduced by 52.6% and 28.2%, respectively. Thermogravimetric (TG) shows that PTETP effectively improves the thermal stability and reduces the thermal decomposition temperature of cotton fabric, and even can increases the residual carbon rate by 20%. In addition, the employment of PTETP shows no harm on the tensile strength of cotton fabrics. After washing 20 times, LOI of flame-retardant cotton fabric still remained almost 26%.

Exceptional high temperature interface chemistry: A creation of P-Sn bonds and enhanced photoreduction ability

Shuo Wang,Guangshe Li,Taotao Huang,Chang Liu,Xinbo Li,Qian Zhang,Yongcun Zou,Liping Li

The interface of substances at high temperature is completely different from that at room temperature, which gives a chance to create some unprecedented physical and chemical properties. These interface-dominated properties can significantly improve the carrier transport kinetics. In this paper, we report on the synthesis of heterogeneous catalysts involving P doped g-C 3 N 4 and SnO 2 , providing a first example of using high temperature interfacial chemistry to create P-Sn bonds between thermo-soften two-dimensional substance and hard oxide. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data confirmed the presence of P-Sn bonds in the heterogeneous catalysts of P doped g-C 3 N 4 and SnO 2 during the rapid thermal quenching process. Owing to the promoted fast separation of photogenerated carriers, P-Sn bond enriched catalyst exhibits the best Cr(VI) photoreduction performance among the g-C 3 N 4 -based photocatalysts ever reported. Even at high Cr(VI) concentrations (at 500 ppm), this catalyst retains a high catalytic activity as well as good stability. High temperature interface chemistry produced by thermal quenching process will provide a universal methodology for constructing interfacial bonds and guiding the synthesis of new interfacial functional materials.

Magnetic mesoporous silica nanocarriers integrated aptamer-based colorimetric biosensor enables sensitive detection of P. aeruginosa

Kaidi Sun,Yan Zhang,Qingyin Zheng,Dan Qin,Peng Yan,Liyan Wang,Hao Chen,Lingxin Chen,Liyan Bi

P. aeruginosa , a highly adaptable and drug-resistant Gram-negative bacterium, poses a serious threat to public healthcare. We developed a magnetic mesoporous silica nanocarriers integrated aptamer-based colorimetric biosensor (MMNCS) for P. aeruginosa rapid and sensitive detection. In the biosensor, magnetic mesoporous silica nanoparticles served as carriers for the horseradish peroxidase (HRP), with aptamers acting as specific capture probes to target bacteria. In the presence of P. aeruginosa , the biosensor anchored onto the bacterial surface, leading to pore closure and suppression of TMB oxidation by HRP. The established colorimetric biosensor achieved remarkable performance in a broad range (10 to 10 5  CFU/mL), high sensitivity (limit of detection, 0.8 CFU/mL) and rapid assay time (15 min). Furthermore, the MMNCS platform was evaluated in tap water, artificial urine, artificial saliva and human serum samples, exhibiting good recoveries of 95.47% to 105.65% and a relative standard deviation between 0.93% and 4.17%. The approach provides a low-cost, sensitive and rapid platform for early screening detection of pathogenic bacteria.

Stimulative mineralization of p-fluoronitrobenzene in biocathode microbial electrolysis cell with an oxygen-limited environment

Dongsheng Shen,Xueqin Zhang,Huajun Feng,Kun Zhang,Kun Wang,Yuyang Long,Meizhen Wang,Yanfeng Wang

p -Fluoronitrobenzene ( p -FNB) is a toxic compound and tends to accumulate in the environment. p -FNB can be effectively removed and defluorinated in a single-chamber bioelectrochemical system (BES). To verify the suppositionally integrated reductive and oxidative metabolism mechanism in the BES, an oxygen-limited environment was used, with pure oxygen and nitrogen environments used as two controls. Under the oxygen-limited condition, the most excellent performance was achieved. The defluorination rate and mineralization efficiency were 0.0132   h −1 and 72.99   ±   5.68% after 96   h, with 75.4% of fluorine in the form of the fluoride ion. This resulted from the unique environment that allowed conventionally integrated reductive and oxidative catabolism. Moreover, the oxidation–reduction potential (ORP) had a significant effect on microbial communities, which was also an important reason for performance diversity. These results provide a new method for complete p -FNB treatment and a control strategy by ORP regulation for optimal system performance.
