Controlled assembly of one-dimensional MoO3@Au hybrid nanostructures as SERS substrates for sensitive melamine detection

Xiu Liang,Xiao-Juan Zhang,Ting-Ting You,Guang-Sheng Wang,Peng-Gang Yin,Lin Guo

A new, feasible, and highly efficient platform was developed using self-assembly of (3-aminopropyl) diethoxymethylsilane (ATES) to create metallic oxide-based noble metal nanoparticle hybrid materials. The ex situ approach for fabricating 1D MoO3-nanowires (MoO3-NWs) or ZnO-nanorods (ZnO-NRs) @Au-nanoparticles (Au-NPs) hybrid surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates not only provides a simple route for the decoration of noble metal nanoparticle on metallic oxide nanomaterials, but also realizes the controllable assembly/co-assembly of pre-synthesized nanoparticles with distinctively different sizes, compositions, shapes, and properties. Control over the self-assembly synthesis for morphology and SERS activity was demonstrated by several parameters: (i) coupling agent of ATES, (ii) ATES content, (iii) Au-NPs content, (iv) Au-NP sizes, and (v) other metallic oxide such as ZnO-NRs. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) method was employed to visualize the enhancement mechanism distribution of the hybrid substrate. Furthermore, the optimized MoO3-NW@Au-NPs SERS substrate manifests high SERS sensitivity to melamine with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.1 ppb (0.08 nM) and excellent uniformity (RSD = 9.26%). The LOD was much lower than the maximal residue limit (MRL) of 2.5 ppm in food prescribed by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Hydrothermal synthesis of gold polyhedral nanocrystals by varying surfactant concentration and their LSPR and SERS properties

Yanting Liu,Jun Zhou,Xiaocong Yuan,Tao Jiang,Lucia Petti,Lu Zhou,Pasquale Mormile

Several polyhedral gold nanocrystals (Au NCs) whose geometric morphology belongs to the Platonic solid and Archimedean solid groups are synthesized by modulating the cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) concentration in the designed hydrothermal processes. The mechanism of growth of these polyhedral Au NCs is revealed via crystallographic analyses, which suggest that their morphologies mainly depend on the diminishing of the surface energy of the specific facets in the CTAB-directive shape-control process. Furthermore, the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties of the as-prepared polyhedral Au NCs are numerically assessed using the finite element method (FEM). The calculations show that these polyhedral Au NCs exhibit geometry-dependence plasmonic properties: specifically, the enormous local field enhancements occur around their vertices and corners. The SERS spectra of 4-mercaptobenzoic acid molecules adsorbed on these polyhedral Au NCs display superior SERS activity with an enhancement factor of 105 to 106 at the excitation wavelength of 785 nm. Particularly, the truncated tetrahedron and bitetrahedron show higher SERS enhancement factors due to their LSPR being closer to the excitation wavelength of 785 nm. Thus, the facile surfactant-assisted synthesis offers the opportunity to design and optimize the shape-dependent SERS activity of polyhedral Au NCs with respect to possible applications in bio-sensing and imaging.

Integrated accurate extraction and fast detection of analyte: Capillarity-Based SERS substrate using in effluent monitoring

Chundong Liu,Fengcai Lei,Jia Li,Yisheng Wei,Zhen Li,Chao Zhang,Baoyuan Man,Jing Yu

In order to realize integration of directional extraction and Raman detection for analytes in effluent, a capillarity-based surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) structure of CuO@Ag nanocapillaries (NCs) has been designed and prepared in this paper. Benefitting from the capillaries formed inside the CuO@Ag NC, probe molecules can be spontaneously transferred and concentrated from the CuO@Ag NC bottom to the top. Further processed with infrared irradiation, the CuO@Ag NC changes from amphiphilic state to hydrophobic-oleophilic state, which can accurately extract molecules that dissolved in oil-phase liquid from the mixed oil/water solution. Numerical simulations by finite-difference time domain method illustrate theoretically that the CuO@Ag NC top is also the position where the strongest electric flied located in this structure, demonstrating the integration feasibility of high-efficient extraction, enrichment and detection in one structure. Experimentally, the enhancement factor and relative standard deviation for R6G molecule of this structure are 1.67 × 10 11 and 15.7% respectively, with other Raman properties also showing remarkable performance. In the simulated wastewater detection test, this structure realizes the fast recognition of trace Sudan I dyes (10 -7 M) in the mixed hexane/water solution composed of both target analyte Sudan I and interferent molecule rhodamine 6G, indicating its promising prospect using in effluent monitoring.

Peroxidase-like recyclable SERS probe for the detection and elimination of cationic dyes in pond water

Guohua Jiang,Zhuyuan Wang,Shenfei Zong,Kuo Yang,Kai Zhu,Yiping Cui

A peroxidase-like MOF coated magnetic surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) probe as Ni@Mil-100(Fe)@Ag nanowires (NMAs) was developed, which can detect multiple cationic dyes with a good recyclability and a high sensitivity. Specifically, Mil-100(Fe) with peroxidase-like activity was fabricated on the magnetic prickly Ni nanowires through layer-by-layer (LBL) method. With the presence of 10 mM H 2 O 2 , hydroxyl radical (•OH) produced by peroxidase-like catalytic reaction of Mil-100(Fe) layer can easily eliminate the pollution molecules within 1 min without any requirement for expensive equipment or complicated process. The magnetic NMAs can provide a rapid refreshment for at least 10 times. In addition, carboxyl-functionalized Mil-100(Fe) can not only increase the decoration efficiency of Tollens but also promote the selective enrichment of the cationic dyes, which endows the probe with a greatly improved sensitivity with a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 10 −10 M for crystal violet (CV). Following the erasure by H 2 O 2 , multiple cationic fishery drugs in pond water can be sequentially detected. Such a recyclable SERS probe holds a great potential in various applications as aquaculture, biomedicine and chemical analysis.

Anchored Plasmonic Nanoparticle Structures by In Situ Ultrafast Laser Reduction for Ultrasensitive and Highly Stable SERS

Junde Ji,Luchan Lin,Yifan Hu,Weiqing Wu,Xinde Zuo,Zhuguo Li

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is widely used in the ultrasensitive detection of chemicals in environmental and biological fields. In this work, anchored plasmonic nanoparticle (NP) structures on various substrates are fabricated by ultrafast laser-induced multiphoton reduction, and the bonding strength between the plasmonic NP and substrate is enhanced by plasmonic effect-enhanced interfacial energy deposition. Anchored Ag NPs with a diameter of 20.68 ± 8.68 nm and a gap of < 5 nm are achieved by precise energy modulation. The prepared substrates show ultralow detection limits (10–14 M for crystalline violet and 10–12 M for thiabendazole) with high stability, which can retain 78.1% and 65.9% of the initial Raman intensity even after 100-day ambient aging and 105 bending cycles. The uniformity of the Raman intensity and substrate reproducibility has relative standard deviations of 4.29% in the 100 × 100 μm2 range and 7.95% for 25 substrates. In addition, direct nanofabrication on fresh biological substrates (e.g., apples, plant leaves) with minimal thermal damage can also be allowed. The mechanical stability test shows that the Raman signal after water flow impinging for 120 min is still 56.9% of the initial state. This in situ ultrafast laser synthesis provides a substrate-independent approach to fabricate a robust SERS platform for environmental, biomedical, and food safety applications.

Defect and carrier engineering in Er-doped ZnSe enables synergistic electromagnetic and charge-transfer SERS enhancement

Jie Li,Yantao Lou,Ze Wang,V. Balasubramani,Xingchen Zhang,Jiaren Wu,Guodong Lin,Baofeng Zhang,Yuanjie Teng

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) enables sensitive molecular detection, yet conventional substrates often exhibit limited stability and poor reproducibility. Semiconductor substrates offer tunable electronic properties and structural robustness, but wide bandgaps and inefficient charge transfer often hinder their performance. Here, we present interface-engineered Er3+-doped ZnSe (Zn1−xErxSe) as a high-performance SERS platform. Controlled Er3+ incorporation, with an optimal doping of 6%, introduces defect states that enhance chemical (charge-transfer) mechanisms while increasing carrier density to strengthen the electromagnetic (plasmonic) response. Using methylene blue as a probe, the substrate achieves a detection limit of 3.24 × 10−8 M with excellent reproducibility. Density functional theory and Mott–Schottky analyses reveal that Er3+ doping reshapes the electronic band structure and enables efficient interfacial plasmon–charge coupling. The substrate also demonstrates potential for environmental sensing, achieving a low detection limit of 5.33 µg mL−1 for PET microplastics, thereby highlighting its suitability for trace-level pollutant monitoring. This work establishes rational interface and carrier engineering in semiconductors as a robust platform for high-performance SERS applications in analytical and environmental chemistry.

Plasmonic resonance coupling in a heterogeneous ML-MoS₂/Au nanoarray for ultrasensitive SERS-based glucose detection

Yingjiao Zhai,Junjie Yu,Xuanyu Chen,Fujun Liu

The urgent need for reliable blood glucose monitoring has driven the development of advanced sensing platforms such as surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). However, traditional SERS substrates are plagued by inconsistent hotspots and limited signal strength. We solved this problem by constructing a heterojunction substrate with a precisely designed gold nanoarray (Au NA) on a single-layer MoS 2 . Due to the structural characteristics of the substrate, a uniform plasma coupling network and efficient charge transfer channels have been constructed. The uniform intensity and charge transfer efficiency of LSPR were optimized through the design of the structure, and the enhancement mechanism was systematically studied physically. When functionalized with 4-MPBA, our sensor achieved an ultra sensitive glucose detection limit of 10 −12 M and long-term stability within 15 days, with relative enhancement factors of 6.29 and 13.98, respectively. It demonstrates excellent recognition ability for glucose molecules in anti-interference detection. This fully demonstrates the transformative potential of ordered nanoarray design in the field of biosensing.

Phosphoric Acid Induced Controllable Nanoparticle Aggregation for Ultrasensitive SERS Detection of Malondialdehyde in a Microfluidic Chip

Yu Lu,Siying Wan,Xin Ruan,Huijun Liang,Jingting Su,Zhuyuan Wang,Li Zhu

Malondialdehyde (MDA), one of the most important products of lipid peroxidation, has been widely accepted as a biomarker to indicate food rancidity as well as the progress of some human diseases. However, ready detection of MDA with ultra-high sensitivity remains a challenge. In this work, a microfluidic surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensing chip based on phosphoric acid induced nanoparticles aggregation was proposed for ultrasensitive MDA detection. The sensing chip was composed of an ultrafast microfluidic mixer, which efficiently transferred analytes to hot spots via the mixer assisted hot spots occupying (MAHSO) SERS strategy. Phosphoric acid, a reagent used in MDA detection, played the role of aggregator to induce aggregation of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs); meanwhile, as fast as a few milliseconds mixing time effectively prevented over-aggregation of Ag NPs. Therefore, this process generated a uniform and dense SERS substrate with analyte molecules located in hot spots. As a result, the MDA SERS sensing chip possessed a limit of detection (LOD) lower than 3.3 × 10−11M, high spot-to-spot uniformity with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 9.0% and an excellent batch-to-batch reproducibility with a RSD of 3.9%. This method also demonstrated excellent specificity and reliability in real sample detection with recoveries of 90.4–109.8% in spiked tests. Keywords:malondialdehyde;SERS sensing chip;microfluidic mixer;ultrasensitive detection;real samples

Chiral plasmonic Au–Ag core shell nanobipyramid for SERS enantiomeric discrimination of biologically relevant small molecules

Hongying Li,Jiale Zhang,Lingling Jiang,Ruo Yuan,Xia Yang

The identification of enantiomers is of great importance in chiral separations and medicinal chemistry . While Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a technique that provides vibrational fingerprints of analytes . The enantiomers identification relies on the SERS difference between left and right-handed circularly polarized light or additional selectors for indirect distinction. In this work, Au–Ag core shell nanobipyramid (L/ [email protected] BPs) were synthesized guiding by chiral encoder of L/D-cysteine. L/ [email protected] BPs produced plasmon-induced circular dichroism signals in the plasmon resonance absorption band , which can be tuned by modulation the amount of cysteine. Moreover, the chiral anisotropy factor of L/ [email protected] BPs at 532 nm can reach 5.11 × 10 −3 . Due to the selective resonance coupling between L/ [email protected] BPs and different enantiomers, L/ [email protected] BPs were further used as SERS substrates for efficient discrimination of biologically relevant small molecules . Chiral [email protected] BPs display the potential for chiral drug identification.

Ag NP-filter paper based SERS sensor coupled with multivariate analysis for rapid identification of bacteria

Rong Wang,Jiamin Luo

Rapid and accurate identification of bacteria is essential to ensure food safety and prevent pathogenic bacterial infection. In this study, a highly efficient method was established for accurately identifying bacterial species by applying Ag NP-filter paper based Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) analysis and Partial Least Squares-Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA) statistical methods. The flexible Ag NP filter paper substrate with high sensitivity and uniformity was prepared by a facile and low-cost silver mirror reaction at room temperature, which exhibited desirable SERS activity in bacteria detection. Furthermore, PLS-DA was successfully employed to distinguish SERS spectra from S. aureus CMCC 26003, E. faecalis ATCC29212 and L. monocytogenes ATCC 19115 with a sensitivity of 93.3–100%, specificity of 96.7–97%, and overall predicting accuracy of 95.8%. This exploratory study demonstrates that a Ag NP-filter paper based SERS sensor coupled with PLS-DA has great potential for rapid and effective detection and identification of bacteria.

Molecular–substrate interaction on dynamic SERS detection of butylated hydroxyanisole on a silver nano-tripod substrate

Zhenglin Liu,Qian Zhang,Xiao Zhong,Caiqin Han

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) relies heavily on a substrate for highly sensitive detection, which may have poor performance due to weak adsorption of molecules on the surface. The substrate–molecule interaction is a crucial factor in the SERS detection of weakly adsorbed molecules. Herein, we performed a dynamic SERS detection of butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) on a silver nano-tripod (AgNT) substrate and reported the instability detection process of BHA. The interaction of BHA molecules with the AgNT substrate was analyzed by the detected phenomena combined with molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) and SERS surface selection rules, and a dynamic adsorption model of BHA molecules was developed. The model postulates that the conversion of solution state for molecular adsorption orientation is the key to dynamic SERS detection. The signal acquisition time of BHA was extended from 1 min to 3 min by adjusting the detection solvent, which improved the practicality and operability of SERS detection. Combining surface adsorption analysis with the SERS process may provide a reference for the detection and analysis of other weakly adsorbed molecules.

SERS detection of negatively charged molecules by interface-induced self-assembly of PDDA modified Ag nanoparticles

Yuanjie Teng,Zhenni Wang,Weihao Huang,Yuanbin She

Some noble metal colloids with negative charges were mostly used as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates, that the Raman signals of negatively charged molecules are hard to be detected because of the electrostatic repulsion among them and the negatively charged metal nanoparticles . Herein, Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) with positive charges and its Ag nanofilm were prepared by poly dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride (PDDA) to realize the SERS detection of negatively charged molecules directly. The zeta potential and its particle sizes were characterized to select the optimum condition of PDDA. In addition, the morphology of positive Ag NPs and Ag nanofilm was characterized by UV–Vis spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy . The SERS effect of negatively charged thiamphenicol on positively charged Ag nanofilm was significantly enhanced at the optimum condition and its sensitivity was significantly improved compared with normal Ag nanofilm. The proposed novel positively charged Ag nanofilm can be further applied to detect other negatively charged molecules by SERS.
