Study on the preparation and fretting behavior of bonded oriented MoS2 solid lubricant coating

Xiong Liangliang,Wu Mengxue,Fan Xiaoqiang,Zhu Minhao

The bonded MoS 2 solid lubricant coating is an effective measure to mitigate the fretting wear of AISI 1045 steel. In this work, the amino functionalized MoS 2 was protonated with acetic acid to make the MoS 2 positively charged. The directional arrangement of protonated MoS 2 in the coating was achieved by electrophoretic deposition under the electric field force. The bonded directionally aligned MoS 2 solid lubricant coating showed high adaptability to various loads and excellent lubrication performance under all three working conditions. At a load of 10 N, the friction coefficient and wear volume of the coating with 5 wt% protonated MoS 2 decreased by 20.0% and 37.2% compared to the pure epoxy coating, respectively, and by 0.07% and 16.8% than the randomly arranged MoS 2 sample, respectively. The remarkable lubricating properties of MoS 2 with directional alignment were attributed to its effective load-bearing and mechanical support, barrier effect on longitudinal extension of cracks, and the formation of a continuous and uniform transfer film.

Sc-Doped Sulfur Vacancy MoS2 Photocatalytic Nitrogen Reduction to Ammonia: Experimental and Theoretical Investigation

Lianyang Zhang,Zhiling Huang,Shengjie Xia

This paper combines defect engineering and metal doping to prepare transition metal Sc-doped molybdenum sulfide-containing sulfur vacancies (Sc@VS–MoS2), which is used for photocatalytic nitrogen reduction to synthesize ammonia (pNRR). The activity of Sc@VS–MoS2 for pNRR is as high as 124.26 μmol g–1 h–1, which is 6.16, 2.23, and 2.69 times for MoS2, VS-MoS2, and Sc@MoS2, respectively. This indicates that the combination of S vacancies and Sc doping can significantly improve the photocatalytic performance of MoS2 materials. Theoretical calculations show that the energy barrier UL of the potential determining step (PDS) is only −0.393 V, much lower than VS–MoS2, making Sc@VS–MoS2 exhibit excellent nitrogen reduction activity for ammonia synthesis. Computational results demonstrate that Sc@VS–MoS2 exhibits outstanding N2 adsorption and activation properties, with 0.533 e charge transfer to N2 that significantly reduces the free energy barrier for the first hydrogenation step. Moreover, its hydrogen adsorption free energy is substantially lower than that of VS-MoS2, effectively suppressing the competing hydrogen evolution reaction and enhancing N2 reduction selectivity. In situ infrared spectroscopy showed the formation of −N2Hy species on the catalyst surface, indicating that the enzyme pathway is the most likely reaction pathway, consistent with the calculated results.

Centimeter-scale heteroepitaxy of monolayer MoS2 on SiC yielding high-rectifying and photovoltaic heterojunction

Binbin Ding,Lihan Wang,Denghui Yan,Fengyu Du,Chenyu Wang,Xiaoyan Tang,Yuming Zhang,Lianbi Li,Haoran Mu,Qingwen Song

Heterojunctions based on transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and wide-bandgap semiconductors such as silicon carbide (SiC) offer significant opportunities for next-generation optoelectronic and power devices, leveraging the atomically thin, bandgap-tunable nature of TMDs and the thermal, electrical, and radiation robustness of SiC. However, achieving wafer-scale, orientation-controlled epitaxial growth of monolayer TMDs on SiC substrates remains challenging due to the large lattice mismatch and complex interface chemistry. Here, we demonstrate the epitaxial growth of 3 × 3 cm 2 monolayer (ML) –MoS 2 on 4H-SiC via chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Combined with structural characterizations and theoretical calculations, the Centimeter-scale ML-MoS 2 exhibits well-defined domain orientations of 0°, 30°, and 60° on the SiC surface. Owing to the low interfacial binding energy, the as-grown ML-MoS 2 can be readily transferred from the SiC substrate in a scalable, etch-free manner. While without any transfer process, the MoS 2 /SiC heterojunction exhibits a rectification ratio up to 10 7 and a pronounced photovoltaic effect under 340 nm and 532 nm laser illumination. These results offer insights into 2D/3D heteroepitaxy on wide-bandgap semiconductors and enable scalable integration of high-performance heterojunctions.

Yiqiu Wang,Zhuotong Yu,Yourong Wang,Junjie You,Chuanqing Du,Siqing Cheng

Tin oxide (SnO 2 ) as one of the most intensively investigated anode materials for LIBs is impeded for its commercial application due to the low electronic conductivity and huge volume change during the charge/discharge process which resulting in severe capacity fading and poor cycling ability. Herein, hybrid SnO 2 /MoS 2 @C nanocomposite was designed and synthesized hydrothermally using P123 as dispersant and glucose as the carbon source, and investigated electrochemically and comparatively. The results show that the hybrid SnO 2 /MoS 2 @C nanocomposite anode delivers reversible specific capacities of 1047.41, 985.06, 837.23, 687.37 and 545.96 mAh g −1 at current densities of 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, and 2 A g −1 , respectively and the discharge specific capacity still remains ca. 1047 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 , demonstrating an improved cycling stability and rate capability, which might be attributed to the unique hybrid architecture with synergistic effect on the reaction kinetics and charge transfer properties. This paves a way for developing advanced energy storage materials in in next-generation energy storage systems.

Developing Wearable Photothermal and Antibacterial Fabrics: In-Situ Polymerization of MoS2-Hybridized PET Fibers

Hongchuang Li,Zhou Sha,Yuheng Song,Jiahui Fan,Jiaxian Wei,Yuchi Fan,Xiang Fei,Meifang Zhu

The burgeoning field of smart textiles, particularly those with photothermal conversion capabilities, is driven by the escalating need for energy-efficient and versatile thermoregulation solutions across healthcare, energy, and personal protection applications. Despite the promising potential of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (e.g. MoS 2 ), their practical implementation has been hindered by challenges such as aggregation and the lack of a one-step continuous spinning process for the fabrication of high-performance photothermal fibers. This study addresses these gaps by employing in-situ polymerization to integrate MoS 2 with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polymer, yielding the PET/MoS 2 fibers and fabrics that exhibits excellent photothermal antibacterial properties. The uniform distribution of MoS 2 within the PET matrix not only improves the fiber's mechanical integrity but also significantly enhances its photothermal performance and antibacterial activity under photothermal conditions. The tensile strength of the fabric was observed to increase with the incorporation of MoS 2 up to an optimal loading amount. The photothermal performance was found to be exceptional under various light sources, with a direct correlation to the MoS 2 content. The antibacterial efficacy was notably robust, achieving a 95% reduction in both Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) under near-infrared irradiation. This study offers a scalable and efficient solution for advanced wearable thermal management, poised to redefine the future of personal comfort and healthcare technology.

Ultrathin 2D/2D MoS2/Bi2WO6 S-scheme heterojunction for boosting photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin

Qi Chen,Cheng Liu,Rui Liu,Yidong Hou,Jinhong Bi,Jimmy C. Yu,Ling Wu

A series of 2D/2D MoS 2 /Bi 2 WO 6 S-scheme heterojunctions consisting of ultrathin MoS 2 nanosheets (MS, 1.6 nm) and ultrathin Bi 2 WO 6 nanosheets (BWO, 1.5 nm) were developed for photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin. The samples with 5 % mass ratio of MS (5 %MS/BWO) exhibits the almost complete degradation of ciprofloxacin (≈100 %) under visible light. It is evidenced that the formation of S-scheme heterojunction with close interfacial interaction facilitates the photoinduced carrier separation and the generation of surface acid sites. The activation of ciprofloxacin molecules is realized through the coordinately interaction of C-N and C=O with the surface W sites. Moreover, the OVs in BWO side is a convenient pathway for activated of O 2 , embodying in the generation of •O 2 − and •OH under visible light over photocatalyst. Such an association of charge transfer mechanism with coordination activation shows the enhanced photocatalytic performance toward ciprofloxacin. This work provides a motivation which designs an S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst with the ability to activate the specific group in molecules to comprehend the degradation of antibiotics.

Ultrasound-induced rapid electron movement on ZnO/MoS2 heterojunction for high performance tumor therapy

Hailiang Zhang,Guoxia Liu,Guoliang Zhang,Nan Li,Ying Lu,Jianbo Song,Guannan Zhang

Conventional methods for treating tumors not only have limited therapeutic efficacy but also cause harm to patients, so there is an urgent need to develop a new therapeutic approach. Sonodynamic therapy (SDT), with its strong tissue penetration and few side effects, is considered to be an effective means of treating tumors. However, the reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by a single piezoelectric material is often limited and does not achieve a complete tumor cure. In this paper, a ZnO/MoS 2 heterojunction is synthesized by hydrothermal immobilization of MoS 2 on ZnO to enhance the effect of SDT. Meanwhile, due to the electron exchange between ZnO and MoS 2 , a layer of ZnS is formed between ZnO and MoS 2 . Under ultrasound (US) irradiation, the ZnO/MoS 2 heterojunction can effectively eliminate breast cancer cells within 10 min. This is mainly due to the better piezoelectric catalytic ability of ZnO/MoS 2 than pure ZnO. Electrochemical and Uv–vis tests show that the formation of heterojunction accelerates the separation of electrons and holes and inhibits carrier complexation, so that more oxygen substrates will react with electron-hole pairs to generate ROS. This work provides a novel idea to take the treatment of tumors by enhancing piezoelectric catalysis through the construction of heterojunction interfaces.

Polyurethane foam loaded MoS2 aerogel for efficient solar evaporation with excellent salt-rejection property

Miaomiao Ye,Xinze Ye,Xiaohong Zhou,Yueqian Yan,Tuqiao Zhang,Xiaowei Liu

To achieve salt-rejection and long-time operation of solar evaporators remains a challenge for seawater evaporation based on interfacial solar heating. In this work, a polyurethane foam loaded MoS 2 aerogel (denoted as PU-MoS 2 aerogel) was prepared using MoS 2 as the photothermal material, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the aerogel framework material and polyurethane (PU) foam as the support material. The as-prepared PU-MoS 2 aerogel possessed characteristics such as wide light absorption, developed pore structure, strong hydrophilicity and water absorption, good thermal insulation and high mechanical strength, which makes it has high water evaporation rate of 1.22 kg·m −2 ·h −1 under 1 sun illumination. It also exhibited an excellent salt-rejection property since the high concentrated brine at the surface of the PU-MoS 2 aerogel could be refluxed back to the underneath unevaporated seawater through the hydrophilic PVA and developed pore structure of PU foam. As a result, the PU-MoS 2 aerogel had high stability for long-time operation, the water evaporation rate kept unchanged even after 10 cycles of use. Finally, we demonstrated that inorganic salts and organic contaminants in condensed freshwater can be well reduced by the PU-MoS 2 aerogel.

Revolutionary Energy Harvesting: Gravity-Driven Piezocatalysts for Sustainable Hydrogen Production in MoS2@Mo2CTx Systems

Hsun-Yen Lin,Jyh Ming Wu

Hydrogen (H 2 ) is mainly produced using steam methane reforming, electrolysis, and gasification, which require external energy and special catalysts. A new catalyst by combining MoS 2 nanoflowers (NFs) with metal carbide/nitride nanosheets (Mo 2 CTx MXene) to create a nanosheet bending moment. The MoS 2 @Mo 2 CT x heterostructures achieve a production rate of 1164.8 µmol g −1 h −1 under an application of mechanical force, 4.01 and 3.06 times higher than Mo 2 CTx and MoS 2 alone, due to enhanced charge transfer from MoS 2 's piezoelectricity and Mo 2 CT x 's conductivity. This study introduces a pioneering methodology that harnesses gravitational energy as a continuous mechanical force, simulated using a peristaltic pump, to drive the piezocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), achieving a notable hydrogen production rate of 454.1 µmol g −1 over 24 hours and demonstrating a sustained capability for hydrogen generation. The theoretical calculation results validate the piezoelectric potential in water-flow-pressure triggered HER systems. The piezocatalytic HER system, assuming powered by the Hoover Dam, will produce 290.9 kmoles of hydrogen per ton daily, equivalent to utilizing 19 150 kWh of energy in the electrocatalytic system. The simulated gravity-driven water flow using MoS 2 @Mo 2 CT x piezocatalysts for H 2 generation demonstrates superior efficiency by eliminating common thermal energy conversion losses, marking a significant breakthrough in sustainable hydrogen production technologies.

Reduced graphene oxide supported Ni-doped MoS2 nanosheets with enhanced lithium-ion storage performance

Shiliang Zhang,Kaiyu Qi,Baoshuai Du,Gengzeng Zhu,Xiaoyan Liu,Bangwen Zhang

Rechargeable LIBs have been playing the dominant role in the market of consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and grid storage. At present, graphite, as a traditional anode material, cannot meet the requirements of high-energy-density LIBs due to its low theoretical specific capacity (372 mAh g −1 ). Here, we report Ni-MoS 2 /rGO composites synthesized by a ligand-assisted hydrothermal method, in which curled Ni-doped MoS 2 nanosheets (Ni-MoS 2 ) grown on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) had a loose thin-layered microstructure with high electrochemical activities, ensuring excellent lithium-ion storage performance of the composites. Benefitting from high electrochemical activities of the Ni-MoS 2 and high conductivity of the rGO, the Ni-MoS 2 /rGO composites exhibited high reversible capacitance and fast reaction kinetics. As a result, a high capacity of reversible lithium-ion storage up to 995 mAh g −1 (after 100 cycles) and a good rate capability were achieved by the Ni-MoS 2 /rGO composites.

Ultrasensitive chemical detection using amorphous MoS2 decorated NiS core–shell structures on nickel foam

Xu Hong-Quan,Meng Xiang-Dong,Li Bai-Zhi,Gao Ming

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a highly sensitive analytical technique extensively employed in bioanalysis, chemical sensing, and environmental monitoring. Transition metal sulfides, such as molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) and nickel sulfide (NiS), exhibit significant potential as SERS substrates, but their performance is often constrained by limited exposure of active sites and inefficient charge transfer, especially in complex sample matrices. In this study, we address these challenges by employing a hydrothermal strategy to synthesize amorphous MoS 2 nanoshells in an urchin-like MoS 2 -NiS core–shell structure grown on nickel foam (A-MoS 2 /NiS/NF). Further enhancement was realized via neodymium doping, yielding the x Nd-A-MoS 2 /NiS/NF. The optimized 0.015Nd-A-MoS 2 /NiS/NF substrate demonstrated a high enhancement factor (EF) of 1.56 × 10 9 for methylene blue (MB) and a detection limit as low as 10 –12  M. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that neodymium doping substantially increases the density of states (DOS) at the Fermi level, thereby enhancing charge transfer and amplifying the Raman signal. The 0.015Nd-A-MoS 2 /NiS/NF substrate also exhibited high sensitivity in detecting melamine in real milk samples, confirming its practical applicability. By effectively addressing the challenges of active site exposure and charge transfer in MoS 2 and NiS-based SERS substrates, this work significantly advances the practical application of transition metal sulfides in SERS. This development paves the way for the broader deployment of these materials in environmental and bioanalytical detection, presenting a promising strategy for improving the sensitivity and versatility of SERS-based sensors. Degradation of bisphenol a using peroxymonosulfate activated by WO3@MoS2/Ag hollow nanotubes photocatalyst

Ying Zeng,Na Guo,Xingjian Xu,Yong Yu,Quanying Wang,Na Wang,Xuerong Han,Hongwen Yu

WO 3 @MoS 2 /Ag (HW@MA) hollow tubes were successfully engineered to photodegrade bisphenol A (BPA) combined with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the first time. XRD, XPS, TEM and SEM were conducted. The HW@MA tubes present excellent photocatalytic performance on the removal of BPA. The intermediate products of BPA were investigated by GC-MS analysis and the degradation pathway was proposed. To explore the transferred mechanism of photoproduced carriers, the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technique was carried out. The results revealed that the superoxide radical ( O 2 − ), hydroxyl radical ( OH), sulfate radical ( SO 4 − ) were the main active radicals. Moreover, the formed schottky junctions enhanced the separation efficiency of photoinduced electron-hole pairs. Besides, the effect of the photocatalysts’ dosage, PMS concentration, pH of the initial solution and co-existing anions on the BPA degradation were investigated.
