Metal-organic-framework (MOF)-derived oxide is a promising gas-sensing material candidate because of its high surface area, porosity and structural diversity. Utilizing Aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition (AACVD), the fabrication of MOF-derived films performs characteristic morphology and controlled size, which greatly improve the gas-sensing performance. Herein, the heterojunction interface between SnO 2 nanorods and MOF-derived Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles was prepared by two step AACVD. Firstly, SnO 2 nanorods were directly grown on flat electrode. Subsequently, size-controlled MOF-derived Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles were coated on SnO 2 nanorods. The hydrogen sensors were developed based on the above sensing materials with different deposition time ( 0, 30, 40 and 50 min) to demonstrate gas-sensing performance. The Co 3 O 4 /SnO 2 -40 sensor exhibits a response value of 305 % to 100 ppm of H 2 at 310°C, which is 4.4 times of the SnO 2 sensor. Moreover, the Co 3 O 4 /SnO 2 -40 sensor retains a measurable response of 4 % even at an extremely low hydrogen concentration of 200 ppb. The superior sensing performance of this sensor can be attributed to the large surface area and the p-n heterojunction interface. Consequently, the construction of heterojunction via AACVD offers an approach for fabricating high performance hydrogen sensors.

Tin oxide (SnO2) and tin-based composites along with carbon have attracted significant interest as negative electrodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, tin-based composite electrodes have some critical drawbacks, such as high volume expansion, low capacity at high current density due to low ionic conductivity, and poor cycle stability. Moreover, complex preparation methods and high-cost carbon coating procedures are considered main challenges in the commercialization of tin-based electrodes for LIBs. In this study, we prepared a Sn/SnO2/C nano-composite structure by employing a low-cost hydrothermal method, where Sn nanoparticles were oxidized in glucose and carboxymethyl cellulose CMC was introduced into the solution. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope revealed the irregular structure of Sn nanoparticles and SnO2phases in the conductive carbon matrix. The as-prepared Sn/SnO2/C nano-composite showed high first-cycle reversible discharge capacity (2248 mAhg−1) at 100 mAg−1with a first coulombic efficiency of 70%, and also displayed 474.64 mAhg−1at the relatively high current density of about 500 mAg−1after 100 cycles. A low-cost Sn/SnO2/C nano-composite with significant electrochemical performance could be the next generation of high-performance negative electrodes for LIBs.

The composite photoanodes based on the ZnO/SnO 2 hierarchical structures with high photoelectricity properties have been successfully synthesized, and used in the CdS and CdSe quantum dots co-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs). In this experiment, the ZnO/SnO 2 nanoparticles (ZS-NP) and hierarchical nanosheets-based microflowers (ZS-MF) were prepared by the one-step hydrothermal route and the morphologies of the products were controlled by the solvent variation. An improved power conversion efficiency of 4.98% was achieved for the cell based on the ZS-MF composite photoanodes, which showed an increase of 21.8% compared to the ZS-NP photoanodes (4.09%). This result is mainly connected to the unique superiority of the three-dimensional hierarchical microflower nanostructures for light scattering and quantum dots loading, which is responsible for the increase of photocurrent values and eventual PCE.

SnO 2 was recently employed as an efficient electron-transport layer (ETL) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) and high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) have been reported. However, it is still challenging to fabricate SnO 2 thin films through facile solution-based synthesis at low temperature (<150 °C) to be compatible with the large scale module fabrication, especially for flexible devices. Here, we report a low temperature solution-based method for preparation of SnO 2 nanoparticles. Ultrasonic-assisted wet chemistry synthesis of ultrafine SnO 2 nanocrystals with particle size ranging from 2 to 5 nm was achieved by employing a SnCl 4 ⋅5 H 2 O solution in a mixed ethanol–water solution and with no annealing step. The crystallinity and microstructure of the SnO 2 nanoparticles were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), as well as selected area electron diffraction (SAED) analysis. The added water in ethanol and increased pH values were demonstrated as two key factors to successful fabrication of highly crystallized samples with high reproducability. An efficiency of 16.56 % was achieved for PSCs based on SnO 2 nanoparticles synthesized by ultrasonic-assisted wet chemistry. Graphical Sn made easy : Being easily manufactured at low temperatures makes perovskite solar cells (PSCs) attractive for use with flexible substrates and for future commercial deployment. An optimized ultrasonic-assisted preparation method is presented for SnO 2 nanoparticles, which is then used as the electron-transport layer in perovskite solar cells to achieve efficiencies comparable to PSCs with SnO 2 layers fabricated using traditional methods.

A novel ternary SnO 2 -Nb-C composite, which consists of SnO 2 nanoparticles and a fraction of Niobium (Nb) embedded in flake carbon, is synthesized by hydrothermal and ball milling method. To be used as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the SnO 2 -Nb-C composite is smoothly doped with n-type elements owing to the various valences of Nb , which enhances the electronic conductivity of the electrode, and effectively inhibits volume changes in SnO 2 during the cycle process, thus improving the electrode’s electrochemical performance. Therefore, at 0.2 A g −1 , the capacity is 956 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles, and the rate capacity is 1130.2 mAh g −1 . Furthermore, at 1.0 A g −1 , the specific discharge capacity is 1077.0 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles. According to the characterization results, the SnO 2 -Nb-C nanocomposite can be regarded as a potential anode material for LIBs.

SnO 2 is a promising LIB anode material due to its high theoretical capacity and eco-friendliness, but suffers from low conductivity and severe volume expansion. This work synthesizes TiO 2 /graphene@SnO 2 (TiO 2 /G@SnO 2 ) core-shell nanofibers via coaxial electrospinning and calcination to address these limitations. The study focuses on optimizing the Ti/Sn molar ratio, finding that a 1:1.5 ratio (GST−2) delivers superior electrochemical performance. The GST−2 anode exhibits an initial discharge capacity of 986.4 mA h g −1 , charge capacity of 677.7 mA h g −1 , and initial Coulombic efficiency of 68.7%. It maintains 556.8 mA h g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 , demonstrating exceptional cycling stability. Even at a high current density of 2.0 A g −1 , it retains 450.9 mA h g −1 , highlighting excellent rate capability. The optimized Ti/Sn ratio enhances structural stability without compromising overall capacity. These results confirm TiO 2 /G@SnO 2 core-shell nanofibers as a viable high-performance anode strategy for next-generation LIBs.

Porous tremella-like In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 microspheres possess abundant oxygen vacancies. • In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 heterojunction narrows bandgap and enhances interfacial charge transfer. • In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 sensor shows ultra-sensitive ppb-level NO 2 detection performance at RT. • Superior RT NO 2 sensing performance stems from n-n heterojunction synergistic effects. • An intelligent sensing device based on the In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 sensor was built. The growing demand for ultra-sensitive, power-efficient NO 2 sensors in wearable and portable electronics has driven intense research, yet achieving reliable ppb-level detection at room temperature (RT) remains a major unresolved challenge. The In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 sensor overcomes this limitation through multiple synergistic effects arising from n-n heterojunction construction. The In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 heterojunction features a hierarchically porous morphology with larger specific surface area, enriched oxygen species and reduced E g . The In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 sensor displays outstanding NO 2 sensing performance with a response of 2209.77 toward 4 ppm NO 2 at RT, which is 250.82 times greater than that of the pristine In 2 O 3 sensor (8.81). More remarkably, the sensor realized an ultra-low theoretical limit of detection of 0.03 ppb, while still retaining a high response of 59.52 exposed to 500 ppb NO 2 . Moreover, the sensor demonstrated fast response/recovery kinetics, excellent selectivity, long-term stability, and remarkable humidity resistance. The superior performance is attributed to the multiple synergistic effects on morphological reconfiguration, bandgap narrowing, oxygen species enrichment, and vacancy-dominated unconventional charge transfer. An intelligent sensing device based on the In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 sensor was built with an innovative humidity compensation-based alarm logic, effectively reducing false alarms caused by humidity. This work provides new insights for the rational design of high-performance RT NO 2 sensors for practical applications. Download: Download high-res image (212KB) Download: Download full-size image

In this work, SnO 2 was prepared by hydrothermal method and annealed at 550 °C. Through XRD characterization and BET measurement, it can be found that the addition of NH 4 F can guide the growth of the (110) crystal plane and the increase of the specific surface of SnO 2 . The results showed that the response of SnO 2 to n-butanol was increased from 190.46 to 354.11 after NH 4 F modification, and the detection limit was 2.82 ppb. The calculation of DFT adsorption energy provides direct and valid evidence for this. To further test whether the sensor can effectively distinguish for the homologs and isomers of n-butanol, the reciprocal of the lowest resistance is substituted for the magnitude of the response value in the response recovery curve. Moreover, the electron effect and steric hindrance effect can be reasonably explained for the response value of the target molecule.

It is important for metal oxides to continuously uphold applicable room–temperature gas sensing capability for hundreds of days for practical applications. In this study, an exploration has been conducted to maintain an extraordinary room–temperature hydrogen sensing capability for 1 wt% Pt–SnO 2 composite nanoceramics over a prolonged time in a practical way. Though as–prepared samples’ room–temperature responses to hydrogen weakened obviously with time, they were completely restored through mild heat treatments like 200 °C for 15 min using commercial Al 2 O 3 ceramic heating plates of 10 mm × 10 mm. With such ceramic heating plates to provide a periodic heat treatment of 200 °C for 15 min in every three days, a room-temperature response over 1000 to 1 % H 2 –20 % O 2 –N 2 has been continuously maintained for samples over 365 days. It is suggested that some heaters should be incorporated into future room–temperature metal oxide gas sensors, whose periodic heat treatment will be crucial to maintain room–temperature gas sensing capability at minimum energy consumption for the sensors over their lifespan of service.

Despite the promising attributes of graphitic carbon nitride (CN) in electrochemical luminescence (ECL), its practical application is hindered by inherent limitations, such as poor electron transport efficiency, insufficient catalytic active sites, and severe passivation under high potentials, which collectively compromise ECL intensity and stability. To address these challenges, this work proposes a synergistic electric field modulation strategy by constructing Sn2+-partially oxidized CN/SnO2-x (SCN) heterojunctions via a solvothermal method. The incorporation of Sn2+/Sn4+ redox pairs establishes continuous charge transfer pathway, enhancing coreactant (K2S2O8) utilization efficiency and prolonging carrier lifetimes, thereby achieving a nearly 3-fold increase in ECL efficiency. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the synergistic interaction between the external and built-in electric fields optimizes directional electron transfer from CN to SnO2-x, effectively suppressing interfacial passivation at high potentials (−1.8 V). Leveraging this mechanism, a dual-wavelength ECL biosensor was developed for the ultrasensitive detection of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), demonstrating high clinical applicability. This study not only provides strategy for modulating multipath charge transfer in heterojunction-based ECL systems but also opens avenues for designing advanced semiconductor hybrids with tailored electronic structures.

As the traditional anode material of lithium-ion batteries, tin dioxide (SnO 2 ) has the characteristics of a high theoretical capacity and stable crystal structure. However, the alloying/de-alloying reaction between tin and lithium ions causes volume expansion and continuously generates an SEI film, which causes the electrode to fall off the current collector and the capacity fade rapidly. Generally, a composite of carbon materials and SnO 2 can alleviate the expansion and pulverization phenomena. However, the microstructure of carbon materials is complex and changeable, which makes it difficult to definitively state the influence mechanism of the microstructure on the lithium storage performance of composite materials. Here, three kinds of lignin-based porous carbons (LPCs) with different microstructural characteristics, along with a high graphitization, high specific surface area and hierarchical porosity, are obtained by regulating the process of gas exfoliation and in situ activation. Furthermore, a series of LPC/SnO 2 composites are obtained by an ultrasonic dispersion and ball milling method. Electrochemical property results show that the hierarchical porous LPCs are more conducive to the dispersion/coating of SnO 2 nanoparticles and that the reversible specific capacity of the electrode material increases from 64 to 620 mA h g −1 , effectively mitigating the expansion and pulverization of SnO 2 during the lithium storage process.

The all-inorganic cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr3) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted considerable interest because of their outstanding environmental stability and low manufacturing cost. However, the state-of-the-art mesoscopic titanium dioxide (TiO2) electron-transporting layers (ETLs) always present low electron mobility, are destructive to perovskites under ultraviolet light illumination, as well as possess high sintering temperature. Nanostructured tin dioxide (SnO2) is a promising electron-transporting material for high-efficiency PSCs due to matching energy-level alignment with the perovskite layer, improved optical transparency, high electron mobility, excellent photostability, and low-temperature processing. Furthermore, rapid but poorly controlled perovskite crystallization makes it difficult to scale up planar PSCs for industrial applications. To address this issue, we adopt a dimensional SnO2 ETL to change the surface wettability for uniform perovskite coverage over large areas and the growth of large-sized CsPbBr3 grains, resulting in a maximum grain size of 1.65 μm. Moreover, the dimensional SnO2 ETL could increase the interfacial contact area between the CsPbBr3 layer and the ETL and enhance the electronic contact for efficient electron extraction to suppress or to eliminate the notorious hysteresis behavior. As expected, a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.51% with an almost hysteresis-free phenomenon is achieved through dimensionality control of SnO2 films attributed to the remarkably enhanced light harvesting, accelerated electron extraction, diminished defect density, and reduced charge recombination. Upon further interfacial modification with graphene quantum dots (GQDs), the PSC based on the two-dimensional SnO2 ETL achieves a champion PCE of 10.34% due to the improved energy-level alignment at the device interface. Moreover, the best all-inorganic CsPbBr3 PSC free of encapsulation retains 93% of initial efficiency over 10 days at 80% relative humidity. This work provides an effective dimensionality control strategy for optimized charge transportation and enlarged perovskite grain size to make stable and efficient all-inorganic CsPbBr3 PSCs.
