Miniaturized lasers with tailored lasing modes are critical for integrated photonics, demanding their high-level integration and 3D or multi-dimensional designability. Here, we demonstrate the intracavity light field modulation by integrating micro-optics into Fabry-Pérot (FP) microcavities using two-photon-lithography. Synergistic modulations of the internal element geometry and cavity configuration provide adjustable and stable resonance control. The quality factor of focusing micro-optics integrated microcavity is up to ∼ 5.8 × 10 5 from ∼ 10 3 in plane-parallel FP microcavities, while decreasing lasing thresholds to ∼ 0.3–2.5 µJ·mm −2 . The microlaser with an intracavity axicon generates stable Bessel-Gaussian beam with a ∼ 150 µm non-diffraction distance. A 2D Hermite-Gaussian mode selector with indices up to 19 is implemented by off-axis pumping. As a proof of concept, the biomimetic all-optical displacement perception inspired by biologically hair sensilla reaches a sensitivity of up to −1.13 nm·µm −1 . Its deep-learning-driven recognition based on lasing mode images is explored to obtain an accuracy over 88.94%. This work may promise small lasers with freely designed compact configurations and improved performance for diverse integrated applications.

Although combined chemotherapy (Chemo), photothermal (PTT) and photodynamic (PDT) in cancer therapy has drawn significant attention due to its superior anticancer ability, the required high intensity of irradiation results in serious photo-toxicity to healthy neighboring cells, and thus limits its biomedical applications. Herein, we developed an ultralow-intensity near infrared (NIR) light synchronously activated collaborative Chemo/PTT/PDT nanoplatform. The nanoplatform is composed of a highly emissive upconversion (UC) core, chlorin e6 (Ce6) photosensitizer and the anticancer drug doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) co-loaded in a mesoporous silica (MS) shell, and polyethylene glycol-modified graphene (PGO) acts as both the photothermal reagent and smart switch for promoted drug release. Upon 808 nm NIR light exposure with ultralow intensity (0.25 W cm−2), which is below the maximum permissible exposure (MPE, 0.33 W cm−2) for skin, the mild hyperpyrexia of PGO induced both cancer cell irreversible death for PTT and greatly promoted drug release for enhanced Chemo. On the other hand, the upconverted 660 nm light from UC activated Ce6 to generate reactive oxygen species for PDT, while the upconverted 540 nm light from UC could be employed for visualizing the treatment process. The in vitro and in vivo anticancer experiments demonstrate that the ultralow-intensity NIR light synchronously activated Chemo/PTT/PDT nanoplatform exhibits remarkable therapeutic efficacy with minimal photodamage.

Surface-mediated gene delivery has attracted more and more attentions in biomedical research and applications because of its characteristics of low toxicity and localized delivery. Herein, a novel visible-light-regulated, surface-mediated gene-delivery platform is exhibited, arising from the photoinduced surface-charge accumulation on silicon. Silicon with a pn junction is used and tested subsequently for the behavior of surface-mediated gene delivery under visible-light illumination. It is found that positive-charge accumulation under light illumination changes the surface potential and then facilitates the delivery of gene-loaded carriers. As a result, the gene-expression efficiency shows a significant improvement from 6% to 28% under a 10 min visible-light illumination. Such improvement is ascribed to the increase in surface potential caused by light illumination, which promotes both the release of gene-loaded carriers and the cellular uptake. This work suggests that silicon with photovoltaic effect could offer a new strategy for surface-mediated, gene-delivery-related biomedical research and applications.

Molybdenum disulfides (MoS 2 ) has attracted much attention as an efficient catalyst for sterilization. However, the structures and preparation methods on the bactericidal effect of MoS 2 were not very clear currently. In this work, MoS 2 were prepared through three ways containing ultrasonic, hydrothermal, intercalation methods, and they possessed different morphologies and structures which was confirmed by XRD, Raman and UV–Vis characterizations. E. coli was inactivated to evaluate the photo-induced antibacterial properties of these MoS 2 under light (18 W) condition. Results showed that the sterilization rate of the MoS 2 prepared by ultrasonic (US-MoS 2 ), hydrothermal (HY-MoS 2 ), intercalation (IN-MoS 2 ) method can reach 33%, 62% and 99% after 180 min of exposure, respectively. In order to figure out the factors that affected the photo-induced antibacterial properties of MoS 2 , the morphologies, structures and photo-catalytic properties of MoS 2 prepared via different methods were compared systematically. Results showed that the IN-MoS 2 had higher metal phase content, better light responsiveness and smaller size than those of US-MoS 2 and HY-MoS 2 . Also, the IN-MoS 2 had the highest photo-induced antibacterial effect. The antibacterial mechanism was studied by capture agent experiment and ESR test, and the results showed that the main active substance in the photo-induced antibacterial process was electrons.

In this work, Ag nanoparticles as surface plasmon catalysts were prepared on polydopamine microspheres via in-situ reduction for catalytic 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol in the presence of sodium borohydride. The kinetics of catalytic reaction under light and dark conditions was compared. It was found that the reaction rate constant under light condition was increased by 53.6% due to the surface plasmon resonance effect. The transition state theory was used to reveal the enhanced mechanism of catalytic conversion of 4-nitrophenol under light condition. It is demonstrated that the light-excited high-energy electrons are responsible for the shift of the adsorbed reactants to the excited state with higher potential energy, lowering the apparent activation energy from 47.2 kJ/mol to 32.6 kJ/mol and thereby enhancing the conversion of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol. This study offers a deep insight into the contribution of surface plasmon resonance to catalytic conversion of 4-nitrophenol by surface plasmon catalysts.

The past decade has witnessed a significant development of droplet microfluidics for applications such as directed evolution and single-cell analysis. While the stability and manipulation of droplets are part of the prerequisites to further their applications, most of the currently available surfactants serve solely as stabilizers between the interfaces of water and oil. In this study, we present a novel type of photo-responsive fluorosurfactant based on fluorinated plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs). The demonstration by fluorinated gold–silica core–shell NPs (f-Au@SiO2) has been shown to be effective in stabilizing the water-in-fluorocarbon oil droplets. More importantly, the photothermal response enabled by the f-Au@SiO2 has been shown to be promising for the movement of droplets as well as the alteration of interfacial stability. The unique photo-responsiveness provided by the plasmonic NPs is expected to gear up the droplet microfluidics with an “active” surfactant for reconfigurable optical manipulation.

Light-induced cell detachment shows much potential in in vitro cell culture and calls for high-performance light-responsive films. In this study, a smooth and dense SiO2/TiO2 nanocomposite thin film with thickness of around 250 nm was first fabricated on H2O2 treated polystyrene (PS) substrate via a low-temperature sol–gel method. It was observed that the film could well-adhere on the PS surface and the bonding strength became increasingly high with the increase of SiO2 content. The peeling strength and shear strength reached 3.05 and 30.02 MPa, respectively. It was observed the surface of the film could transform into superhydrophilic upon 20 min illumination of ultraviolet with a wavelength of 365 nm (UV365). In cell culture, cells, i.e., NIH3T3 and MC3T3-E1 cells, cultured on SiO2/TiO2 nanocomposite film were easily detached after 10 min of UV365 illumination; the detachment rates reached 90.8% and 88.6%, respectively. Correspondingly, continuous cell sheets with good viability were also easily obtained through the same way. The present work shows that SiO2/TiO2 nanocomposite thin film could be easily prepared on polymeric surface at low temperature. The corresponding film exhibits excellent biocompatibility, high bonding strength, and good light responses. It could be a good candidate for the surface of cell culture utensils with light-induced cell detachment property.

Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) exists in both normal and pathological tissues. Spatiotemporal variations in ALP levels can reveal its potential physiological functions and changes that occur during pathological conditions. However, it is still challenging to exploit fluorescent probes that can measure ALP activity under good spatial and temporal resolutions. Herein, enzyme-instructed self-assembly (EISA) was used to construct a high-performing analytical tool (MN-pY) to probe ALP activity. MN-pY alone (free state) showed negligible fluorescence but presented an almost 13-fold increase in fluorescence intensity in the presence of ALP (assembly state). Mechanism study indicated the increase in fluorescence intensity was due to hydrogelation and formation of supramolecular fibrils, mainly consisting of dephosphorylated MN-Y. The dephosphorylation and further fibrillation of MN-pY could induce the formation of a “hydrophobic pocket”, leading to a further increase in fluorescence intensity. Moreover, MN-pY could selectively illuminate HeLa cells with a higher ALP expression but not LO2 cells with lower ALP levels, promising a potential application in cancer diagnosis.

Optoelectronic synapses that integrate and process light and electric signals simultaneously received giant attention for the development of artificial visual system. However, to mimic robust perception and processing ability of biological vision demands exceptional photoresponse and tunable plasticity of the optoelectronic synaptic units. Herein, we demonstrated a Methylammonium (MA) halide-doped perovskite artificial synapse. The introduction of MA halide additives into formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI 3 ) can effectively improve the film morphology and crystallinity , leading to a wider regulatory range of synaptic plasticity. The effect of light irradiation on shaping synaptic plasticity was revealed to realize important synaptic functions. With the assistance of light stimuli, high-order learning behaviors have been achieved, including dynamic logic operation and conditioned reflex. A higher pattern recognition accuracy (88.2%) of handwritten digits was achieved in simulation. Moreover, the correlation between light irradiation and the hybrid perovskite-based artificial synapse can be utilized to perceive environmental change and to tune information processing efficiency. These results provide a new strategy for constructing future artificial intelligent system.

High-quality photodetectors are essential for getting external information, especially those operating in the near-infrared range. These devices play a critical role in remote communication systems by effectively converting light into electronic signals effectively. The emerging copper-based chalcogenides have attracted attention for thin film solar cells and self-powered photodetectors. However, they can detect only certain wavelengths of infrared light because of their wide bandgaps. In this work, we prepared a hexahydroxy chalcogenide copper–cadmium-zinc–tin sulfur–selenium (CCZTS) absorber with a narrow bandgap of 0.87 eV. Then, we developed a self-powered CCZTS/cadmium sulfide (CdS) thin film photodetector. Furthermore, the manganese (Mn2+) dopant is incorporated into the CdS buffer layer to improve the heterojunction interface properties. As a result, the devices based on the CCZTS/CdS:Mn heterojunction exhibit high responsivity, reduced dark current, and a fast response speed in the wavelength range of 300–1550 nm. At 1319 nm, it has a responsivity of 0.96 A W–1, a detectivity of 3.79 × 1012 Jones. In addition, the resulting CCZTS-based photodetector is successfully integrated into an optical communication system as an optical signal receiver. Our results demonstrate that it has a significant potential for low-cost infrared photodetection and optical communications.

Ti 3+ self-doped TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 mesostructured nanosheets heterojunctions (Ti 3+ -TiO 2 /Meso-g-C 3 N 4 ) have been prepared via calcination-sonication assisted method using amino cyanamide as precursors, combined with a solid-state chemical reduction method. The Ti 3+ -TiO 2 /Meso-g-C 3 N 4 heterojunctions with narrow band gap of ∼2.21 eV possess relative high surface area of ∼73.8 m 2 g −1 , and large pore size of ∼10 nm. Remarkably, the Ti 3+ -TiO 2 /Meso-g-C 3 N 4 heterojunctions exhibit excellent visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity for degradating phenol in wastewaters. The photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of Ti 3+ -TiO 2 /Meso-g-C 3 N 4 heterojunctions rise to ∼290.2 μmol h −1 g −1 , which is about 4 and 14 times higher than that of the bare Meso-g-C 3 N 4 and TiO 2 , respectively. The enhanced photocatalytic activity may be ascribed to the synergetic effect of the mesoporous structure providing sufficient surface active sites, and Ti 3+ self-doping and the formed heterojunctions promoting the spatial separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs.

The photoreforming of lignocellulose is a novel method to produce clean and sustainable H2 energy. However, the catalytic systems usually show low activity under ultraviolet light; thus, this reaction is very limited at present. Visible light-responsive metal-free two-dimensional graphite-phased carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a good candidate for photocatalytic hydrogen production, but its activity is hindered by a bulky architecture. Although reported layered g-C3N4 modified with active functional groups prepared by the chemical exfoliation enhances the photocatalytic activity, it lost the intrinsic structure and thus is not conducive to understand the structure–activity relationship. Herein, we report an intrinsic monolayer g-C3N4 (∼0.32 nm thickness) prepared by nitrogen-protected ball milling in water, which shows good performance of photoreforming lignocellulose to H2 driven by visible light. The exciton binding energy of g-C3N4 was estimated from the temperature-dependent photoluminescence spectra, which is a key factor for subsequent charge separation and energy transfer. It is found that monolayer g-C3N4 with smaller exciton binding energy increases the free exciton concentrations and promotes the separation efficiency of charge carriers, thereby effectively improving its performance of photocatalytic reforming of lignocellulose, even the virgin lignocellulose and waste lignocellulose. This result could lead to more active catalysts to photoreform the raw biomass, making it possible to provide clean energy directly from locally unused biomass.
