LiBH4 (lithium borohydride) is a promising high capacity hydrogen storage material but suffering from its high dehydrogenation temperature and poor reversibility. To solve this problem, surface-modified AlN (aluminum nitride) was prepared by the alcoholysis process of LiBH4 and composited with LiBH4. By controlling the temperature of the drying process, it can tune the sorts and quantities of the functional groups on AlN. The de/rehydrogenation of LiBH4 is greatly improved by compositing it with surface-modified AlN because oxygen atoms in functional groups promote the decomposition of intermediates of LiBH4 and Hδ+ (positive hydrogen atom) reacting with Hδ− (negative hydrogen atom) in LiBH4. Besides, AlN provides the pathway of H and Li atoms to improve the kinetics of the de/rehydrogenation of LiBH4. Freeze-dried AlN containing O–H and C–H groups shows the best catalytic effect on the hydrogen storage reaction of LiBH4. The optimized composite could release a stable capacity of more than 6.1 wt % after cycling, which has potential applications in high-temperature environment hydrogen storage.

The development of laser-driven color converters with exceptional thermal stability and high luminous quality is critical to advancing lighting technologies. In this study, we successfully synthesized the AlN-La 3 Si 6 N 11 : Ce 3+ (AlN-LSN:Ce) phosphor-in-glass film (PiGF) composite by incorporating micron-sized AlN particles, which not only enhances heat dissipation but also acts as effective scattering centers to modulate the luminescent spot. Specifically, the presence of micron-sized AlN particles creates thermally conductive channels that effectively mitigate laser-induced heat accumulation, enabling the optimized AlN-LSN:Ce PiGF to withstand a laser power density of up to 20 W/mm 2 and achieve a maximum luminous flux of 1406 lm, which is 33.3% higher than that of the AlN-free LSN:Ce PiGF (15 W/mm 2 ). Meanwhile, the role of AlN particles as scattering centers influencing the luminescent spot size of LSN:Ce PiGF is confirmed, and the optimal AlN content is determined. Additionally, an AlN-LSN:Ce PiGF@sapphire@CaAlSiN 3 :Eu 2+ (CASN:Eu) PiGF sandwich structure-based lighting was fabricated, yielding warm white light emission with a color rendering index of 87.9, luminous efficiency of 109 lm/W, CIE coordinates of (0.35, 0.30), and a correlated color temperature of 4672 K. The proposed composite may contribute to the development of high-performance laser-driven color converters, which simultaneously address the critical requirements for efficient thermal management and precise luminous spot control.

To evaluate the oxidation behavior of AlN ceramics prepared using a pressureless sintering method, aluminum nitride bulk samples were annealed at temperatures ranging from 900 °C to 1300 °C for 1–5 h under an air atmosphere. The phase composition, microstructure and weight change of the oxidized samples were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis-mass spectrometry (TGA-MS), respectively. The results showed that certain of the gaseous oxidation products of AlN ceramics were nitrogen oxides (NO x ). The oxidation reaction started at approximately 800 °C to 900 °C. The thermal conductivity and flexural strength of AlN ceramics were enhanced slightly after the heat treatment in the 900–1100 °C temperature range. The entire surface of the AlN block was covered with a thin, compact alumina layer after oxidizing at 1100 °C for 3 h, which may enhance the metal adhesion to the AlN surface in a metallization process. At 1200 °C and higher, the AlN ceramics oxide layer became rough, porous, and cracked, leading to a sharp drop in the flexural strength and thermal conductivity of the AlN ceramics.

In this study, high-performance aluminum nitride (AlN) samples were prepared by gelcasting based on a low-toxicity monomer and organic solvents . We prepared a 50 vol% solid content AlN suspension with a solvent ratio of 3:1, 6 wt% N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA) and 0.15 wt% Polyethyleneimine (PEI); after degassing, low viscosity and high stability were observed. It was proven that the AlN green bodies exhibited a bending strength of 18.68 MPa, which met the requirements for machining. An optimum debinding process was developed and the TG-DSC curves showed that the AlN green bodies were heated at 1 °C/min from 450 to 800 °C. The relative density, apparent porosity , bending strength, and thermal conductivity of the AlN sintered bodies prepared by non-aqueous gelcasting were 98.5%, 0.22%, 310 MPa, and 159 W m −1 K −1 respectively, representing optimum conditions. The uniform miscrostructure of the sintered bodies was observed by SEM images.

Ferroelectrics enable active thermal management via electric-field switching, but low thermal conductivity and switching ratio limit practical use. Our work demonstrate domain engineering in high-entropy PZT ceramics by AlN compositing via two-step sintering. AlN addition refines the matrix grain size, induces lattice strain, and forms pyrochlore phase at high contents. PFM reveals reduced domain wall density and enlarged domains due to interfacial defect-induced internal bias field.Electrically, P r decreases, while E c and T c exhibit non-monotonic evolution-reflecting a transition from domain wall pinning to leakage and internal field regimes.Thermally, enhanced thermal conductivity competes with reduced switching ratio; a critical composition (x = 0.06) where maximized interfacial phonon scattering yields a localized improvement in thermal switching efficiency. AlN incorporation enables synergistic control of ferroelectric stability and thermal transport through grain refinement, internal field, and domain restructuring. Our work provides fundamental insights into the domain-electrothermal coupling in ferroelectric composites.

The AlN/Cu composite substrate is promising for power electronic packaging. However, the large coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) mismatch among AlN, Cu, and AgCuTi fillers generates high residual stresses, undermining joint reliability. We design AgCuTi/FeZr 2 fillers to lower the CTE of the brazed seam in AlN/Cu joints. Results show that FeZr 2 doping improves joint performance, raising the shear strength to 124.0 MPa at 5 wt.% (≈83% above the undoped joint) and enhancing thermal-shock resistance. Turner-model calculations and finite-element analysis indicate that FeZr 2 lowers the CTE of the composite filler and thus reduces the interfacial residual stress. Microstructure reveals that excessive FeZr 2 results in pronounced thinning and local discontinuity of the TiN reaction layer by reducing the availability of active titanium ([Ti]) involved in the interfacial reaction. These findings demonstrate that AgCuTi/FeZr 2 fillers provide an effective route to low-stress, high-reliability AlN/Cu brazed substrates when the FeZr 2 content is kept at an appropriate level.

AlN metallization substrates hold broad application potential in the field of electronic packaging due to their high thermal conductivity and unique electrical insulation properties. The present work reports a method for preparing Ag coatings by directly pressing and sintering micro-Ag particles on the AlN surface in air without additional brazing fillers or pre-treatment. The in-situ formation of the Ag-containing Al 2 O 3 interlayer (~200 nm) is critical for the interfacial bonding at the AlN/Ag interface. The diffusion of Ag particles into Al 2 O 3 not only enhances the interfacial adhesion of the Ag layer but also improves thermal conductivity. Notably, AlN/Ag exhibits a high bonding strength of 67.6 MPa with an excellent thermal conductivity of 178.7 W·m -1 ·K -1 at 950°C. The Ag layer demonstrates superior surface hardness and electrical conductivity at 900°C due to its high density and low grain boundary density.

The influence of adding carbon powder/graphene on the microstructure, thermal and electrical properties of AlN ceramic were studied. Carbon powder/graphene was beneficial for removing oxygen impurities in AlN samples and purifying grain boundaries. Thermal conductivities of samples with added carbon powder or graphene increased to 194.6 W/(m·K) and 235.9 W/(m·K), respectively. Graphene phase residues appeared in the samples with added graphene, that owned higher thermal conductivity. Meanwhile some electronic defects were introduced, reducing the resistivity of the sample and altering the defect mechanism. Impedance spectroscopy and dielectric temperature spectroscopy revealed the changes in the defect mechanism in the sample. And the AlN sample with 0.25 wt% graphene added had higher electrical conductivity, dielectric constant and dielectric loss than the AlN sample with 0.25 wt% carbon powder added. Therefore, appropriately adding carbon material could enhance the thermal conductivity of AlN ceramics. When added graphene, thermal conductivity was significantly enhanced and the electrical properties were also synergistically regulated.

Si 3 N 4 whiskers and nanocarbon powder were added to AlN–Y 2 O 3 –YF 3 ceramics, and the microstructure, thermal conductivity and flexural strength of the samples were studied. Instead of working as one-dimensional reinforcement in AlN ceramics, the Si 3 N 4 whiskers formed a β-Sialon phase that significantly strengthened the grain boundaries, thereby increasing the flexural strength of AlN sample. The added carbon powder formed a transition layer at the grain boundaries and further strengthened them. The fracture mode of the samples changed from intergranular to transgranular, and their flexural strength was increased. Moreover, carbon powder reduced the concentration of aluminum vacancy and improved the thermal conductivity of the samples. Therefore, the flexural strength and thermal conductivity of AlN ceramics with carbon powder and Si 3 N 4 whisker additives were synergistically increased to 366.4 ± 16.4 MPa and 203.5 ± 3.16 W m −1 K −1 , respectively.

Immersion tests of AlN in LiF-LiCl-LiBr-Li salt have been performed at 500 °C to study the corrosion behaviour of AlN. The results show that AlN initially corroded at a higher rate (2⋅10 −5 mg/(mm 2 ⋅h)) during 0−50 h than during 50−300 h (6⋅10 -6 mg/(mm 2 ⋅h)) because the formation of an alumina corrosion layer protected the AlN from further corrosion. The addition of metallic Li at low concentrations (<0.1 wt. %) to the molten salt inhibited the corrosion of AlN by preferentially depleting oxygen impurities, while Li at high concentrations (>0.1 wt. %) accelerated corrosion by reacting with YAG in AlN.

This study tackles thermal management challenges in high-power electronics by developing trimethoxy-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with tailored branched architectures (TTMOS series) as surface treatment agents (STAs) for AlN/Al 2 O 3 hybrid fillers. We systematically optimized filler size distribution, STA structure, and matrix viscosity to enhance thermal interface material (TIM) performance. Critical findings reveal that a hybrid filler mass ratio of 120 μm AlN: 3 μm Al 2 O 3 : 0.5 μm Al 2 O 3 = 8:4:2 (87 vol% loading) delivers exceptional thermal conductivity ( λ = 9.74 W m −1 K −1 ), low thermal resistance ( θ = 2.86 K cm 2 W −1 ), balanced penetrability (54.6/0.1 mm), and oil resistance ( R 16h = 1.50). Branched STAs, such as TTMOS-T1, significantly outperform linear analogues by enhancing interfacial compatibility, suppressing particle agglomeration (validated via SEM/XPS), and reducing oil seepage ( R 16h = 1.45 vs. 1.77 for TTMOS-I), while maintaining a high thermal conductivity ( λ = 9.79 W m −1 K −1 ). A 100 mPa s Me-PDMS matrix further ensures post-thermal cycling stability, with λ increasing from 9.13 to 9.26 W m −1 K −1 . Practical validation demonstrates that TTMOS-T1-modified grease reduces the surface temperature of a 30 W HB-LED chip by 10 °C versus commercial TIMs, highlighting its real-world efficacy.

Periodontitis involves bacterial infection, inflammation, and bone loss, requiring multifaceted treatment. Here, we developed a multifunctional carbon dot nanomaterial (ASA-ALN-CDs) from aspirin and alendronate sodium via one-step microwave-assisted synthesis. ASA-ALN-CDs showed potent antibacterial and antibiofilm activity against P. gingivalis and F. nucleatum, high bone-targeting ability, and good cytocompatibility. The material suppressed LPS-induced IL-1β and IL-6 expression and promoted osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells under inflammatory conditions. In a rat periodontitis model, local administration of ASA-ALN-CDs reduced alveolar bone loss and inflammation. Mechanistically, ASA-ALN-CDs inhibited the HIF-1α signaling pathway and downregulated LDHA and VEGF. Collectively, ASA-ALN-CDs represent a promising bone-targeting nanoplatform integrating antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and pro-osteogenic functions for periodontitis therapy.
