Regulation of sintering procedure on property of DLP-printing SiO2–Al2O3 ceramic: Key of cristobalite precipitation

Yansong Liu,Wenbo Li,Yongsheng Liu,Yu Pan,Yejie Cao,Xiang Zheng,Jian Chen,Yijiang Zeng

In this work, alumina was selected as the second phase reinforced fused quartz ceramics and SiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 composite ceramics were fabricated via digital light processing (DLP) 3D-printing. The effect of the sintering procedure on the mechanical and dielectric properties of SiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 composite ceramics were investigated in detail. The results show that the amount of cristobalite precipitation is the key factor affecting the properties of composite ceramics. The amount of cristobalite precipitation in composite ceramics could be controlled effectively by adjusting the heating rate, holding time, and sintering temperature. The sintering procedure is set as the heating rate of 4°C/min, sintering temperature of 1200°C, and holding time for 2 h, the flexural strength of SiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 composite ceramic is 47.13 MPa, dielectric constant ranges from 2.90 to 2.97, and the tangent of loss angle is less than 0.041. SiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 composite ceramics with high flexural strength and low dielectric constant were obtained by sintering procedure screening and optimization.

Synergistic enhancement of density and curing depth in DLP 3D printed MgO-Y2O3 coated Si3N4 ceramics

Minhao Shen,Renli Fu,Xinya Xu,Xuhai Liu,Kuang Sun,Wei Xu,Yanling Jiang,Zhe Zhao

The additive manufacturing technology based on digital light processing (DLP) has made it possible to construct silicon nitride (Si 3 N 4 ) ceramics with complex structures. However, due to the high ultraviolet light absorbance and low sintering activity of Si 3 N 4 powders, it is challenging to realize tightly layer bonded and dense Si 3 N 4 ceramics via the DLP technique. Herein, we proposed to coat the Si 3 N 4 particle surface with magnesium oxide and yttrium oxide (MgO-Y 2 O 3 ) layer through the co-precipitation method, in an attempt to achieve the dual purposes of increasing the curing depth and promoting densification. The MgO-Y 2 O 3 layer can not only reduce the refractive index difference between the Si 3 N 4 powder and the photosensitive resin to improve the curing depth, but also serve as the sintering assistance to generate the liquid phase and promote densification. When the coating content of MgO-Y 2 O 3 is 10   wt.%, the curing depth of the ceramic slurry can be increased to 107 μm, which is 33% higher than that of pristine powders. This strategy can provide a simple and effective method to construct advanced Si 3 N 4 ceramics via DLP 3D printing.

DLP printed β-tricalcium phosphate functionalized ceramic scaffolds promoted angiogenesis and osteogenesis in long bone defects

Gangyuan Bi,Lina Mo,Sa Liu,Xiupeng Zhong,Junzhong Yang,Zhongrun Yuan,Shenggui Chen,Li Ren

Nowadays, the repair of long bone defects remains a clinical challenge mainly due to poor oxygen and nutrients delivery. In this study, β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) porous ceramic scaffolds were prepared by digital light processing (DLP) and gradient sintering process. The functionalization of scaffolds was achieved by loading hyaluronic acid-dopamine (HA-DA) coating or sphingosine 1-phosphate/hyaluronic acid-dopamine (S1P/HA-DA) coating, which solved the problem of oxygen and nutrients delivery to a certain extent by promoting blood vessels growth. Cytocompatibility assay, qRT-PCR, Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) staining and quantitative analysis demonstrated that the S1P/HA-DA/TCP scaffolds significantly promoted the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of mouse bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (mBMSCs). Long bone defects (22 mm), rarely reported in previous studies, were constructed on the radius of rabbits. Animal experiments showed excellent early angiogenesis and bone repair in HA-DA/TCP and S1P/HA-DA/TCP groups. In particular, the S1P/HA-DA/TCP scaffolds enhanced bone regeneration and osseointegration. Overall, these functionalized scaffolds had an effective repair on long bone defects that would have great potential for clinical applications.

DLP-fabricated TPMS bionic gradient PEGDA/MgO/TA/HA scaffolds: antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and osteogenic properties

Shuaihang Wang,Jingbin Hao,Siyu Liu,Haiyu Liu,Ding Shen,Zhonghao Ji,Kai Chen

Due to their internal continuity and smooth surface geometry, three-period minimal surfaces (TPMS) have been widely applied in the structural design and fabrication of bone tissue engineering scaffolds. To achieve a biomimetic simulation of natural bone tissue structure and enhance the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of the implant site, this study innovatively proposes a biomimetic gradient TPMS scaffold with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory functions. First, based on the hierarchical structural characteristics of compact bone and cancellous bone in natural bone, four TPMS gradient structures were parametrically designed. These four structures were then subjected to comprehensive testing to identify the one with the optimal performance. Furthermore, to address the limitation of single-function traditional bone repair scaffolds, this study used polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) as the matrix and prepared a multifunctional composite slurry by incorporating nano-hydroxyapatite (HA), nano-magnesium oxide (MgO), and tannic acid (TA). A series of test results indicate that the I-WP scaffold exhibits the optimal combination of mechanical and permeability properties, while also demonstrating excellent in vitro osteogenic differentiation capacity and antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. In summary, the gradient-structured composite scaffold prepared in this study achieves an integrated structure that enhances mechanical properties, boosts osteogenic mineralization activity, and provides synergistic antibacterial and anti-inflammatory functions. It offers new insights for the structural design and functional optimization of bone tissue engineering scaffolds and holds promising application prospects.

All-natural ceramic composite bone scaffolds of whitlockite/wollastonite fibers: DLP additive manufacturing, microstructure, and performance

Wang Guo,Lei Zhao,Ping Li,Enyu Wang,Yuanheng Pang,Yanting Wei,Bowen Li,Yanjian Huang,Bin Liu,Shan Wang,Hui You,Yu Long

In this study, we introduced a novel approach by using natural calcium phosphate-based ceramic whitlockite as the matrix, natural silicon-based ceramic wollastonite fiber as the secondary phase, and desktop-level DLP 3D printing as the fabrication method to develop an all-natural ceramic porous bone scaffold with excellent mechanical, degradable, biomineralization, and cell responses. The results demonstrated that, at a solid loading of 75 wt% and a sintering temperature of 1000 °C, the compressive strength of the whitlockite porous scaffold reached 20.0 MPa. With the incorporation of wollastonite fiber, the compressive strength of the composite ceramic scaffold further increased to 31.0 MPa, achieving a top-tier level for desktop-level DLP-printed porous ceramic bone scaffolds. This mechanical enhancement effect was mainly attributed to the grain refinement effect of WF on whitlockite and the fiber reinforcement effect of WF. Additionally, the degradation rate of the composite ceramic scaffold increased with higher WF content, attributed to the rapid degradation rate of WF and the microstructural changes in the whitlockite matrix induced by WF doping. Furthermore, the biomineralization capability and cellular response of the composite ceramic scaffold were enhanced with WF doping, due to the improved degradation ability promoting the release of calcium, phosphate, and silicon ions. This study further validates the applicability of desktop-level DLP for fabricating ceramic bone scaffolds and provides evidence of the potential of all-natural ceramic whitlockite/WF as bone scaffold materials.

A One-Step, Cell-Ready Collagen Bioink Enabling DLP Bioprinting and Enhanced Healing of Diabetic Wounds

Caihong Fu,Guangyu Liu,Jing Wang,Yirui Fan,Guochen Wei,Jianxi Xiao

Collagen-based bioinks are highly desirable for regenerative biofabrication owing to their intrinsic bioactivity and native triple-helical structure; however, their application in light-based bioprinting is severely constrained by poor solubility, limited photocurability, and incompatibility with direct cell delivery under physiological conditions. Here, we report a one-step, cell-ready itaconylated collagen (CIA) bioink that enables visible-light digital light processing (DLP) bioprinting at neutral pH. CIA dissolves readily in aqueous media to form transparent precursor solutions suitable for rapid photo-crosslinking and high-fidelity fabrication. Compared with collagen methacrylate (CMA), CIA exhibits superior solubility, printability, and cytocompatibility while preserving collagen biofunctionality. CIA supports direct encapsulation of multiple cell types with high viability and enables fabrication of well-defined porous constructs. In a diabetic wound model, CIA hydrogels accelerated wound closure, reduced inflammation, enhanced angiogenesis, and promoted tissue remodeling. These findings establish CIA as a practical collagen bioink for cell-enabled DLP bioprinting and regenerative wound repair.

Magnetic field-assisted DLP of CIPs/resin composites: Mechanical properties, anisotropic magnetic performance and wear behavior

Pan Wu,Tianyu Yu,Guotai Li,Mingjun Chen

Fabrication of composites with anisotropic properties by additive manufacturing has drawn great attention in recent years. Magnetic-assisted digital light processing (DLP) of micron-scale carbonyl iron powders (CIPs)/resin composites (MACRCs) with tunable microstructure and magnetic properties can be used as smart sensors/actuators in soft robots , aerospace/automobile applications and drug delivery devices due to their complex geometries and fast activation response. However, anisotropic, wear and mechanical properties remain unclear for MACRCs. This work aims to investigate their microstructure-function-wear resistance relationship. Photosensitive resin and CIPs with a concentration up to 5 wt% were prepared to print samples with different anisotropic magnetic properties, using magnetic field-assisted techniques. The results show that addition of CIPs in resin can still maintain good printability, while the mechanical properties deteriorate slightly as the micro-size CIPs reduced the interface bonding strength . Anisotropic magnetic properties were studied using the magnetization tests. In addition, wear tests showed that the coefficient of friction of samples decreases from 0.4938 (pure resin) to 0.4066 (MACRCs with 5 wt% CIPs), indicating improved wear resistance by the addition of CIPs. This work demonstrated that tunable magnetic and mechanical properties can be achieved by manipulation anisotropy of the magnetic nanoparticles using external magnetic field .

3D bioprinting of high-performance hydrogel with in-situ birth of stem cell spheroids

Shunyao Zhu,Xueyuan Liao,Yue Xu,Nazi Zhou,Yingzi Pan,Jinlin Song,Taijing Zheng,Lin Zhang,Liyun Bai,Yu Wang,Xia Zhou,Maling Gou,Jie Tao,Rui Liu

Digital light processing (DLP)-based bioprinting technology holds immense promise for the advancement of hydrogel constructs in biomedical applications. However, creating high-performance hydrogel constructs with this method is still a challenge, as it requires balancing the physicochemical properties of the matrix while also retaining the cellular activity of the encapsulated cells. Herein, we propose a facile and practical strategy for the 3D bioprinting of high-performance hydrogel constructs through the in-situ birth of stem cell spheroids. The strategy is achieved by loading the cell/dextran microdroplets within gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) emulsion, where dextran functions as a decoy to capture and aggregate the cells for bioprinting while GelMA enables the mechanical support without losing the structural complexity and fidelity. Post-bioprinting, the leaching of dextran results in a smooth curved surface that promotes in-situ birth of spheroids within hydrogel constructs. This process significant enhances differentiation potential of encapsulated stem cells. As a proof-of-concept, we encapsulate dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) within hydrogel constructs, showcasing their regenerative capabilities in dentin and neovascular-like structures in vivo . The strategy in our study enables high-performance hydrogel tissue construct fabrication with DLP-based bioprinting, which is anticipated to pave a promising way for diverse biomedical applications.

DLP-printable GelMA-PVI-Zn hydrogels with high strength and osteoinductivity for critical-sized bone defect repair

Shengmiao Wang,Yang Song,Yupu Yang,Xiaohong Wang,Jing Lan,Zheqin Dong

Gelatin-based hydrogels are promising for bone tissue engineering due to their inherent biocompatibility and bioactivity, yet developing scaffolds that simultaneously achieve mechanical robustness, osteoinductivity, and structural precision remains a major challenge. Here, we report a high-strength GelMA-PVI-Zn hydrogel constructed through a double-crosslinked (DC) network of gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA), poly(1-vinylimidazole) (PVI), and Zinc ions. Dynamic PVI-Zn coordination bonds act as sacrificial interactions to dissipate energy, endowing the hydrogel with exceptional mechanical performance, including a tensile modulus of 11.72 ± 0.33 MPa (81.8-fold higher than single-network controls) and a fracture strength of 2.50 ± 0.12 MPa (44.0-fold increase). Importantly, the coordination network preserves the rapid photocrosslinking kinetics of GelMA, ensuring compatibility with digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing for the fabrication of complex, high-fidelity scaffolds. Moreover, sustained Zn 2+ release from the network promoted stem cell osteogenic differentiation in vitro and markedly enhanced bone regeneration in vivo. This work presents a robust and versatile hydrogel platform that integrates high mechanical strength, osteoinductivity, and printability, offering strong translational potential for the treatment of critical-sized bone defects.

A vitrified bond diamond grinding wheel prepared by DLP and grinding performance on single crystal silicon wafer

Jun-yong Zeng,Feng-lin Zhang,Pu Gao,Wei Yang,Xiao-yi Pan

In order to improve the cooling and chip accommodation ability of the wheel in grinding of silicon wafer, we proposed a novel vitrified bond diamond wheel with arrays of micro-channel (AMC) by an additive manufacturing methods based on digital light processing (DLP). The composition of DLP slurry was optimized by examine the rheological behavior and curing properties for resin system, solid loading, content of photoinitiator and diamond abrasive. Furthermore, the sintering temperature on mechanical properties of debinded segments was also investigated. Finally, the grinding performance of vitrified bond AMC wheel on single crystal silicon wafer was evaluated in comparison with a solid structured (SS) wheel based on DLP.A molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was also used to characterize the material removal of silicon wafer in the grinding process. The results indicate that the slurry composed of 24 wt % resin (70 wt % HDDA and 30 wt % PPTTA), 2 wt % TPO, 49 vol % solid loading and 25 vol% diamond abrasive show the sufficient fluidity and good curing performance. Under a sintering temperature of 560 °C, the grinding wheel segments can obtain a maximum flexural strength of 77 MPa with a Rockwell hardness of 75 HRB. In the grinding process, the AMC wheel produces a higher grinding ratio (49) and a lower surface roughness (Ra 0.059 μm) on silicon wafer in comparison with SS wheel. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations indicate that increasing the grinding speed decreases the grinding force but increases the grinding temperature. In contrast, increasing the grinding depth simultaneously increases both the grinding force and the grinding temperature. Furthermore, higher grinding speeds and small grinding depths (feed rates) help reduce grinding-wheel wear and improve the wear ratio under the combined effects of grinding force and temperature.

Interfacial evolution and strengthening mechanism in DLP 3D-Printed In718/SiBCN cermet composites via in-situ reaction

Yubei Zhang,Shan Li,Xiaodong Liu,Xin Li,Bingshan Liu,Tong Zhao,Weijian Han,Gong Wang

Metal-ceramic composites have emerged as a research hotspot due to their combined advantages of both ceramic and metallic properties. This study presents an innovative strategy for fabricating In718/SiBCN cermet composites via light-curing 3D printing and systematically investigates their mechanical properties, interfacial structure, and strengthening mechanisms. The results demonstrate that the composites exhibit outstanding performance, including a low density of 6.89 g/cm 3 , a high flexural strength of 751.68 MPa, and a specific strength of 109.10 MPa/g/cm 3 . Notably, chromium precipitates from the metal and undergoes a carburization reaction, forming Cr 23 C 6 in situ. This carbide exists as a precipitate phase within the metallic matrix, establishing a strong interfacial bond with the matrix. Nanoindentation measurements reveal that the average hardness and modulus of the composites reach 12.85 GPa and 216.23 GPa, respectively, which are significantly higher than those of monolithic SiBCN and In718. Finally, the fracture mechanisms indicate that cracks propagate along the secondary phase particles in a transgranular manner, promoting crack deflection and generating extensive microcracking. These mechanisms facilitate substantial energy dissipation, thereby markedly improving both the strength and toughness of the composites.

Regulation of interlayer structure and grain anisotropy in DLP 3D-printed alumina ceramics by the plasticizer PEG200

Kezhen Lu,Xiqing Xu,Haoqin Yang,Dandan Yan,Shiyuan Li,Yuanshuo Sun,Xin Li,Shuxin Niu

Achieving both high forming accuracy and high mechanical strength is a fundamental challenge in DLP-printed alumina ceramics, as solid loading has opposite effects on these two requirements. Plasticizer offers an effective technical solution to this challenge, but their regulatory effects on interlayer bonding and anisotropic grain growth in DLP-printed ceramics are rarely investigated systematically. In this study, PEG200 was used as the plasticizer to investigate its effects on the slurry properties, microstructure, and mechanical properties of DLP-printed alumina ceramics. Based on the optimal formulation, the influence of debinding atmosphere on the microstructure and properties was further investigated. The results showed that an appropriate 6 wt% PEG200 improved powder dispersion uniformity and significantly suppressed the interlayer stair-step effect. With PEG200 content from 0 to 6 wt%, the side surface roughness decreased from 10.601 μm to 5.590 μm, a reduction of 47.3%. Meanwhile, PEG200 promoted equiaxed grain growth, with the grain aspect ratio decreasing from 1.817 to 1.658 and circularity increasing from 0.820 to 0.848, which further improved the flexural strength by 39.4%, from 320.10 MPa to 446.33 MPa. After debinding in an argon atmosphere, the flexural strength further increased to 609.26 MPa, with a relative density of 99.16%. This study demonstrates that an appropriate amount of PEG200 achieves synergistic optimization from microstructure to macroscopic properties by improving interlayer structure and promoting equiaxed grain growth, providing an effective strategy for fabricating high-performance DLP 3D-printed alumina ceramics.
