Lu-doped LaFeO 3 nanoparticles are synthesized via a sol-gel method. • 7%Lu-LFO exhibits excellent sensitivity, stability and selectivity to acetone. • 7%Lu-LFO maintains remarkable acetone sensitivity at high relative humidity. • The greater charge transfer enhanced the adsorption of acetone on Lu-LFO. The design of highly sensitive metal oxide-based acetone sensors is of crucial importance for non-invasive diagnosis of diabetes. Herein, we report La 0.93 Lu 0.07 FeO 3 as high acetone sensing materials. The La 0.93 Lu 0.07 FeO 3 based sensor demonstrates a high response value of 82.1 toward 40 ppm acetone at 140°C and a low detection limit (200 ppb), along with good selectivity and long-term stability. Furthermore, La 0.93 Lu 0.07 FeO 3 maintains sufficient acetone sensing performance under high humidity (85% RH), allowing for accurate identification of diabetic patients versus healthy individuals in simulated human exhaled breath tests. Theoretical calculations reveal the importance of interfacial charge transfer between acetone molecule and Lu-LaFeO 3 surface to the acetone sensitivity. Acetone exhibits the greatest charge transfer and thus the strongest adsorption interaction on Lu-LaFeO 3 surface, which promotes gas molecule capture efficiency in acetone detection and accounts for the high sensing performance. This work presents a high-sensitivity acetone sensing material for non-invasive diabetic diagnosis and provides valuable insights for the rational design of high-performance perovskite-based sensors. Download: Download high-res image (153KB) Download: Download full-size image The La 0.93 Lu 0.07 FeO 3 sensor exhibits excellent acetone sensitivity and selectivity, enabling reliable detection even under high-humidity conditions. Mechanistic investigations revealed that Lu doping promotes interfacial charge transfer between the material and acetone molecules, which serves as the key driver for the enhanced gas-sensing performance.

Resistive random access memory (RRAM) is widely recognized as a highly promising competitor for next-generation mainstream memory solutions. Rare earth perovskite oxides can meet the requirements of RRAM for high reliability of storage media, adjustable resistive switching, low power consumption, and high compatibility with CMOS processes. This study systematically explored the conduction mechanism of electrospun LaFeO 3 nanofibers by regulating electrode materials to enhance their potential application in the next-generation RRAM devices. The surface of LaFeO 3 nanofibers was relatively smooth and the diameter was approximately 460 nm. The XPS results revealed the existence of La 3+ , Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ and oxygen vacancies in LaFeO 3 . The conduction mechanism of LaFeO 3 as a switching medium in RRAM devices were analyzed by density functional theory (DFT). The results showed that LaFeO 3 exhibited favorable electrical conductivity due to the strong hybridization of Fe 3d-O 2p orbitals, and oxygen vacancies played a key role in the formation of conductive filaments. Among Ag/LaFeO 3 /Ag, Ag/LaFeO 3 /Pt and Pt/LaFeO 3 /Pt devices, the Ag/LaFeO 3 /Pt device possessed the best performance due to electrode optimization. The energy barrier of the Ag/LaFeO 3 /Pt device was relatively low which enabled the favorable resistive switching performance with both a moderate operating voltage and a relatively high on/off ratio. These findings indicated that the low energy barrier and efficient resistive switching characteristics of LaFeO 3 nanofibers induced by oxygen vacancies/Ag ions provided an important theoretical support for the development of low power and high-performance RRAM devices.

Given the potential risks of metabolic toxicity and organ damage associated with ethylene glycol vapor exposure, the implementation of effective monitoring is essential. In this study, LaFeO 3 -SnO 2 composites with varying mass ratios were synthesized via a hydrothermal-water bath method and subsequently evaluated for ethylene glycol sensing properties. Experimental results indicate that the LaFeO 3 :SnO 2 composite with a mass ratio of 1:2 shows the best sensing performance toward ethylene glycol among all samples. At 145 °C, it achieves a response of 89.522–100 ppm ethylene glycol, which is 435.4 % and 3137.7 % higher than the responses of pure SnO 2 and LaFeO 3 , respectively. Moreover, the operating temperature is 90 °C lower than that of pure LaFeO 3 . Meanwhile, the sensor exhibited great selectivity, repeatability and long-term stability. The improved performance could be attributed to the unique morphology of the LaFeO 3 -SnO 2 composite and the formation of a p-n heterojunction, which facilitated enhanced charge transfer and provided more active sites for ethylene glycol adsorption. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to theoretically confirm the enhancing effect of the heterojunction on the sensing performance. This work is expected to provide new insights and serve as a valuable reference for the application of LaFeO 3 -SnO 2 gas sensors in the detection of ethylene glycol.

Ni-loaded perovskite catalysts are one of the most promising catalytic materials for industrial applications and have received a great deal of attention in the field of steam reforming of biomass tar into hydrogen (H2). In this study, the Ni-LaFeO3 catalysts with different Ni coordination states were comparatively analyzed in terms of toluene steam-reforming performances. A significant correlation was found between support Ni (NiSup) ratio and H2 yield, with a NiSup ratio of 64.68% corresponding to the highest hydrogen yield of 171.35 mmol of H2/g of toluene (conversion rate of 93.88%). In-situ DRIFTS experiments and DFT calculations demonstrated that NiSup could promote the adsorption of toluene and the desorption of −COO*─a key intermediate of the rate-determining step─thereby enhancing catalytic activity and hydrogen yield. This finding confirms the effect of the Ni coordination state on catalytic activity and provides an important pathway for Ni-based perovskite catalyst design to support biomass-derived hydrogen production.

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is a highly flammable fuel widely used for cooking, heating and transportation, making real-time leak detection essential for preventing fire, explosion, and suffocation hazards. In this study, a room-temperature no-core fiber (NCF) sensor coated with CoFe 1.96 La 0.04 O 4 /LaFeO 3 heterostructures was developed for LPG detection. The heterostructures were characterized using XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, TEM, XPS, PL spectroscopy, and UV–vis spectroscopy. Experimental results showed that La incorporation and heterostructure formation refined the particles size, improved surface accessibility, and modulated the electronic structure and band gap, thereby enhancing LPG adsorption, carrier redistribution, and the refractive-index response of the sensing film. Among the investigated compositions, the 1:1 CoFe 1.96 La 0.04 O 4 /LaFeO 3 heterostructure exhibited the best performance, achieving a sensitivity of −2.87 pm/ppm, a response/recovery time of 36/69 s, and a limit of detection of 39.7 ppm, together with excellent selectivity and stability. The effects of temperature and relative humidity were also quantified and compensated to improve detection accuracy. These results demonstrate that the proposed sensor is a promising, low-cost platform for LPG leak detection in domestic and industrial applications.

The safety issues caused by the leakage of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) electrolyte have attracted growing attention. Due to the volatile, flammable, and explosive nature, even minor electrolyte leakage can lead to serious safety risks. Real-time detection of dimethyl carbonate (DMC), a primary electrolyte component, is essential for preventing LIB-related accidents. This study presents a gas sensor based on Sr-doped LaFeO 3 hollow microspheres for DMC detection. Sr doping introduces additional oxygen vacancies, leading to a significant enhancement in sensor performance. The LaFeO 3 -Sr-5 sensor with a Sr doping concentration of 5 at% exhibited the best performance, including a high response value (∼53.9–1 ppm DMC), excellent sensitivity (obvious response to 10 ppb DMC), outstanding selectivity, and good stability at an operating temperature of 110℃. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that the adsorption capacity of DMC on the surface of LaFeO 3 material was significantly increased after Sr 2 + doping. In simulated LIB electrolyte leakage scenarios, the sensor shows rapid and distinct responses, demonstrating its potential for practical application in battery safety monitoring.

Synthesizing value-added solar fuels represents a promising solution to address energy and environmental issues. Its efficiency is determined by the performance of photocatalysts, and the main challenges lie in achieving efficient interfacial charge transfer and utilization, which are highly related to the assembly of cocatalysts. Herein, we design La 3+ -defect LaFeO 3 nanofibers with a higher specific surface area to achieve highly dispersed loading of Ag nanoparticles through a one-step coaxial electrospinning technique. Characterizations and theoretical calculations revealed that La 3+ defects favor the anchoring of Ag nanoparticles and the formation of a Schottky junction, thereby facilitating the interfacial charge separation and transfer. Additionally, this synergistic engineering efficiently boosts CO 2 adsorption/activation and strengthens the proton affinity, preferentially driving the multi-electron reduction. Owing to these benefits, the optimized nanofibrous Ag/La 0.9 FeO 3 sample exhibits promising photothermal catalytic performance, yielding CH 3 OH of 7.12 μmol·g -1 ·h -1 , which is 2.8-fold over pristine LaFeO 3 , along with good stability and selectivity. This work highlights the effect of interfacial construction on developing advanced photocatalysts.

Creating adsorbents that exhibit high selectivity towards pollutants, can be readily regenerated, and maintain high stability, remains a crucial challenge in water treatment technology. Herein, we present a magnetically and chemically recoverable absorbent based on Ti and Co co-substituted LaFeO 3 (La 0.9 Fe 0.55 Ti 0.3 Co 0.15 O 3 , LFTCO) with significantly enhanced adsorption properties. Notably, LFTCO exhibits a methyl blue adsorption capacity (q max ) of 2131 mg/g, setting a new record among perovskite oxides, due to the increased surface oxygen vacancy with the dual doping strategy. The selected dual-dopant consists of Fenton active Co and spin-state interactive Ti, which allows creating more oxygen vacancy and simultaneously facilitating pragmatic regeneration of the adsorbent. The new LFTCO exhibits significantly enhanced ferromagnetism (M = 7.27 emu/g), enabling rapid magnetic separation from water and subsequent Fenton-based regeneration step. We also reveal that the anchored configuration of SO 3 -defect site, through density functional theory (DFT) calculation, as the most favorable site for the adsorption process. These findings provide a pathway to creating high-performance adsorbents and shed light on the mechanistic understanding of LFTCO's enhanced adsorption properties.

LaFeO 3 is introduced as an ideal protective coating layer with excellent conductivity to enhance LiNi 0.5 Co 0.2 Mn 0.3 O 2 (NCM523) cathode material for use at higher operating voltage (especially 4.6 V). Various material characterization methods are employed to characterize the structural and morphological characteristics of the pristine and modified samples, including x-ray diffraction analysis, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The electrode with 2 wt.% LaFeO 3 coating showed capacity retention of 80% at current density of 1 C after 200 charge/discharge cycles at 25°C, compared with 63% for the pristine electrode. Cyclic voltammogram results indicated that the LaFeO 3 coating reduced the cell polarization during extended cycling. The results therefore show that LaFeO 3 has potential for coating of NCM523 for use even at high voltage.

In this study, the perovskite-type oxide LaFeO 3 is treated by electroless Ni deposition with different reaction time and the electrochemical properties of the resulting material are investigated as the anode for MH-Ni batteries. XRD, SEM, and TEM measurements reveal a uniform deposition of crystalline nickel on the oxide surface and a clear increase in the amount of Ni coating with the deposition time. The electrochemical analysis shows that the electroless deposition can significantly improve the maximum discharge capacity of the battery. Furthermore, the coated electrodes exhibit excellent activation performance and superior cyclic stability. With the increase in the reaction temperature, improvements in the discharge ability, exchange current density, and diffusing coefficient of hydrogen are also observed.

Accurate on-site monitoring of the humidity in the flue gas from coal combustion is crucial for ensuring the accuracy of particulate matter (PM) measurements and improving the energy efficiency of power generation systems. However, developing humidity sensors with both high sensitivity and high selectivity remains a significant challenge, mainly due to the harsh working environment in the flue (high temperature and corrosiveness) and the significant cross-sensitivity caused by the similar electrolysis voltages of H 2 O and CO 2 . To address this issue, a series of amperometric sensors based on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) were fabricated, which employed La 1−x Sr x FeO 3 (x = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8) perovskite sensing electrodes, and the influence of Sr 2+ doping on the humidity sensing performance was systematically studied. The results showed that the lightly doped La 0.8 Sr 0.2 FeO 3 electrode exhibited the best performance, with a sensitivity of up to 70.4 µA/vol%, and could also effectively resist carbon dioxide interference. Moreover, the sensor demonstrated excellent repeatability and long-term stability in high-temperature and high-humidity environments. This research provides a promising material design and sensing strategy for on-site humidity monitoring in complex industrial flue gas environments.

Birefringence, arising from the low-symmetry structure in orthorhombic LaFeO3, limits the observation and utilization of magneto-optical effects. In this study, the pure-phase perovskite-typed La1−xCexFe1−xTixO3/SiO2thin films were successfully fabricated via radio-frequency magnetron sputtering, where the co-doping of Ce3+and Ti4+ions effectively induced a structure transition from orthorhombic to a highly symmetric cubic phase, eliminating birefringence effect and thus reducing optical transmission loss. At the same time, the doped Ce3+ions also effectively enhanced the magnetic and magneto-optical effects of the system due to their strong spin coupling effect and superexchange interaction with Fe3+ions. The results show that the cubic-phase La0.5Ce0.5Fe0.5Ti0.5O3/SiO2thin film exhibits excellent magnetic and magneto-optical performance. Their saturation magnetization reaches 180 emu/cm3with an in-plane easy magnetic axis. And their magnetic circular dichroic ellipticity |ψF| reaches 3054 degrees/cm.
