In this paper, the bilayer polymer-dispersed liquid crystals possessing a PDLC-PVA-PDLC structure were prepared by integrating two monolayer PDLCs. The effect of the polymer mesh size on the electro–optical properties of a bilayer PDLC was investigated by comparing the micro-morphology and electro–optical curves under different polymerization conditions. In addition, the impact of doping MoO2nanoparticles with surface modification on the comprehensive performance of the bilayer PDLC was further researched. The contrast ratio of the bilayer PDLC prepared under the optimal conditions was improved by more than 90% and still maintained excellent progressive driving performance. Therefore, the development of a bilayer PDLC with optimal electro-optical properties will significantly enhance the technological prospects for the application of PDLC-based devices in smart windows, displays, and flexible devices.

While pseudocapacitive electrodes have potential to store more energy than electrical double-layer capacitive electrodes, their rate capability is often limited by the sluggish kinetics of the Faradaic reactions or poor electronic and ionic conductivity. Unlike most transition-metal oxides, MoO2 is a very promising material for fast energy storage, attributed to its unusually high electronic and ionic conductivity; the one-dimensional tunnel is ideally suited for fast ionic transport. Here we report our findings in preparation and characterization of ultrathin MoO2 sheets with oriented tunnels as a pseudocapacitive electrode for fast charge storage/release. A composite electrode consisting of MoO2 and 5 wt % GO demonstrates a capacity of 1097 C g–1 at 2 mV s–1 and 390 C g–1 at 1000 mV s–1 while maintaining ∼80% of the initial capacity after 10,000 cycles at 50 mV s–1, due to minimal change in structural features of the MoO2 during charge/discharge, except a small volume change (∼14%), as revealed from operando Raman spectroscopy, X-ray analyses, and density functional theory calculations. Further, the volume change during cycling is highly reversible, implying high structural stability and long cycling life.

Molybdenum dioxide (MoO2) has attracted many interests due to its unique properties and potential applications. Here, we report the synthesis of high quality MoO2@MoS2 nanorods on c-sapphire substrates through an atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) approach. Optical microscopy (OM), cross-sectional scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), and (grazing incidence) X-ray diffraction ((GI)XRD) measurements reveal that these MoO2 nanorods exhibit epitaxial growth behaviors on c-sapphire substrates with the orientation relationship of MoO2(100)∥sapphire(0001) and MoO2 ⟨001⟩ aligned well with sapphire ⟨101̅0⟩. Raman spectroscopy/imaging, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and GIXRD results disclose that such MoO2 nanorods are wrapped by MoS2 (MoO2@MoS2). Devices based on transferred individual MoO2@MoS2 nanorods show a resistivity of ∼1.65 × 10–4 Ω·cm, comfirming that such nanorods possess higher crystalline degree. Our findings will be helpful for the applications of MoO2@MoS2 in the fields of nanoelectronic devices.

Electrically driven red emission from MoS2–MoO2–MoO3 (MS-MO) hybrid-based metal–semiconductor–metal (MSM) devices is reported for the first time. MoO3 belts with high crystal quality and sufficient size are synthesized by thermal deposition. A layer of MS-MO hybrid is then produced on the belt surface to form MoO3/MS-MO core–shell by sulfurization. The devices exhibit unique electrical properties, a nonlinear I–V curve, and electric hysteresis characteristics at high applied biases (>2.4 V), where MS-MO hybrids act as electron transport channels. The electroluminescent current of the device increases to a set current limit over time when a constant bias is applied. The novel characteristics of the device are attributed to the space charge limited conduction (SCLC) mechanism occurring in MS-MO hybrids. The strong light emission is from recombination of excitons within the MoS2 phase. This work develops a simple and effective method to drive MoS2 to emit light on a large scale without using monolayer MoS2 and vertical p–n junctions, indicating great potential for future 2D optoelectronics and photonics applications.

Identifying the crystallographic orientations and understanding the growth mechanism of MoO 2 nanocrystals are important for device applications. Here, we investigate the effect of precursor concentrations in chemical vapor deposition on the orientation of MoO 2 nanoflakes with respect to the substrate surface. X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, (tilted) scanning electron microscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, and angle-resolved polarized Raman spectroscopy were used to determine the crystal orientations of the nanoflakes and their epitaxial relationship with c- sapphire substrates: lying-down MoO 2 nanoflakes for MoO 2 (0 1 0)∥sapphire(0001) and MoO 2 <0 0 1>//sapphire< 1 1 ¯ 00 >, and standing-up ones for MoO 2 (1 0 0)∥sapphire(0001) and MoO 2 <0 0 1>∥sapphire< 1 1 ¯ 00 >. Tentative atomic epitaxial models are proposed to explain the orientation and alignment. The investigations also demonstrated that angle-resolved polarized Raman spectroscopy is a quick and nondestructive method to identify the crystallographic orientations of nanoflakes.

In this study, MoO 2 was reduced by an unmixed carbon reduction method. Effects of reduction temperature, reduction time and distance between carbon and MoO 2 on the phase composition of reduction products were investigated. Results show that the phase change during the reduction process are MoO 2 →Mo 2 C→Mo with the increase of temperature. The reduced product is Mo 2 C when reduction temperature is 1000 °C and 1050 °C. Pure Mo can be obtained when the reduction temperature increases to 1100 °C. The reduced product changed from nearly spherical Mo particles with fine molybdenum dioxide particles attached on surface to polyhedron Mo particles with smooth surface when the distance between carbon and MoO 2 decreases from 10 mm to 1 mm. The reaction showed a similar change with the changes of the reaction time. The difference is that there will be residual Mo 2 C in reduced product when reduction time was 1 h. This method of carbon reduction can provide low carbon concentration by controlling the carbon distance to avoid the existence of molybdenum carbide in the product of molybdenum preparation.

As important ingredients in lithium-ion battery, the Coulombic efficiency and power density greatly impact the electrochemical performances. Although recent literatures have reported nano-porous materials to enhance the specific capacities, intrinsic drawbacks such as poor initial Coulombic efficiency and low volumetric capacity could not be avoided. Herein, we propose a strategy to prepare carbon supported MoO 2 spheres used for lithium-ion battery with high volumetric capacity density. A high initial Coulombic efficiency of 76.5% is obtained due to limited solid electrolyte interface film formed on the exposed surface. Meantime, the sample with an optimal carbon content and a proper structural strength reveals a higher reversible capacity of 956 mA h g −1 than the theoretical capacity of crystalline MoO 2 (838 mA h g −1 ) and a high capacity retention ratio of 96.4% after 100 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 . And an effective compaction capacity density (under 5 MPa) of 670 mA h cm −3 of the spheres proves its potential value in practical applications.

Monolayer MoS 2 is an emerging two-dimensional semiconductor with wide-ranging potential applications in novel optoelectronic devices and catalysis. Here, we report the growth of drop-like monolayer MoS 2 /MoO 2 granular films on SiO 2 /Si substrate by chemical vapor deposition method. The as-synthesized films were systematically characterized by various means of optical microscopy, X-ray/ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic/kelvin force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman and photoluminescence techniques. The combined results of atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy clearly present novel drop-like granulars and domain boundaries, ascribed to lower growth temperature. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy results complemented by Raman and X-ray diffraction results confirm the formation of MoS 2 /MoO 2 granular films. The ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy, along with kelvin force microscopy, reveals a different nature of surface potential of drop-like MoS 2 granular films compared with crystalline MoS 2 , owing to electron transfer from MoS 2 to MoO 2 and drop-like structure. Our study broadens the scope of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides research and reveals the distinct physical properties of drop-like monolayer MoS 2 granular films.

Developing efficient and durable nonprecious cathodes for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is crucial for industrial alkaline water electrolysis (AWE). NiMo-based materials are among the highly active nonprecious HER electrocatalysts at present and are expected to replace noble-metal catalysts. However, their practical application is hindered by the performance degradation under the industrial operating conditions, especially fluctuating conditions imposed by an intermittent renewable power supply. This study systematically carried out a series of experiments and elucidated the degradation mechanisms of the NiMo-based cathode (Ni4Mo-MoO2) during intermittent AWE. First, the dissolved oxygen that inevitably diffuses from the anode to the cathode chemically corrodes the NiMo catalyst in concentrated alkaline electrolyte at high temperature, thus reducing active sites and leaching critical components, notably Mo. Simultaneously, the reverse current generated during start–stop operations induces anodic polarization of the NiMo cathode, accelerating its degradation through electrochemical oxidation. Moreover, driven by external gas–liquid flow scouring and internal stress from redox-induced phase transformation, the catalyst layer separates from the substrate, leading to serious mechanical detachment. These factors collectively cause severe degradation in the activity of the NiMo cathode. This work provides important guidelines for developing next-generation nonprecious metal cathodes with lasting stability.

Given the exorbitant cost and rarity of platinum (Pt), the rational design of Pt-based electrocatalysts enabling economical and efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysis remains a major bottleneck for widespread application. A facile hydrothermal strategy was employed in this work to successfully synthesize Pt nanoparticles loaded onto MoO 3 /MoO 2 heterojunction. The Pt MoO 3 /MoO 2 – 6 (denoting a hydrothermal reaction time of 6 h) catalyst demonstrates outstanding HER performance, achieving low overpotentials of 25 mV in acidic and 30 mV in alkaline medium at 10 mA cm⁻ 2 . DFT calculations reveal that the metal-support interaction between Pt and MoO x reduces the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption during the HER process, thereby accelerating the reaction kinetics of HER. Theoretical and experimental analysis indicate that the interaction between Pt and MoO 3 /MoO 2 heterojunction enhances charge transfer between Pt MoO 3 /MoO 2 and hydrogen atoms by modifying the electronic structure, optimizing hydrogen adsorption and ultimately boosting electrocatalytic HER activity. The current investigation offers an effective, facile method for the deliberate construction of high catalytic activity noble metal decorated on MoO x -based catalysts for wide pH ranges. Memristors are key to brain-inspired neuromorphic computing, controllable modulation of volatile and non-volatile resistive switching characteristics is crucial for expanding their multi-functional applications. Herein, an Ag/CZTS-MoO 2 /Mo memristor is proposed, which exhibits bias-modulated transition between volatile and non-volatile resistive switching. Volatile switching behavior is observed at low bias (≤1.0 V), while stable non-volatile switching emerges at elevated biases (≥1.4 V) with an On/Off ratio of ∼10 3 . Moreover, the set voltage decreases from −0.70 V to −0.46 V as the bias voltage rises, accompanied by improved switching uniformity and stability. This phenomenon originates from the formation of more robust conductive filaments within the resistive switching layer under large applied bias. These findings demonstrate an effective strategy to modulate volatile and non-volatile switching based on CZTS, and highlight the great potential of CZTS for multifunctional memory and neuromorphic applications.

Ru nanoparticles supported on amorphous/crystalline MoO 2 were developed for alkaline HER. • The catalyst exhibits low overpotential and small Tafel slope, indicating fast reaction kinetics. • Interfacial interaction between Ru and MoO 2 promotes water dissociation and hydrogen evolution. • Excellent activity and durability are achieved, outperforming commercial Pt/C. Developing low-cost, readily accessible, and superior-performance electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is essential for realizing a green and low-carbon energy future. Herein, we report a straightforward synthesis of Ru nanoparticles anchored on an oxygen-vacancy-rich amorphous/crystalline MoO 2 heterostructure support (Ru/ac-MoO 2 @NC). Theoretical calculations in conjunction with experimental investigations reveal that, in Ru/MoO 2 , heterointerfacial electronic structure modulation arising from the amorphization of MoO 2 can effectively promote H 2 O adsorption, reduce the kinetic barrier of water dissociation, and regulate hydrogen adsorption/desorption behavior, thereby significantly enhancing the intrinsic kinetics of the HER. The as-fabricated catalyst demonstrates outstanding HER activity in 1 M KOH, requiring an ultralow overpotential of merely 13 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm –2 , along with a low Tafel slope of 12 mV dec –1 , thereby surpassing the performance of the Pt/C. Furthermore, an integrated green hydrogen production device powered by solar energy and dry-cell batteries is demonstrated, highlighting the practical applicability of the developed catalyst. This research establishes a promising paradigm for the rational engineering of robust HER electrocatalysts, paving the way for scalable and sustainable hydrogen generation. The heterointerfacial interaction between Ru nanoparticles and crystalline/amorphous MoO 2 optimizes interfacial electronic redistribution, accelerating water dissociation and hydrogen adsorption/desorption kinetics, thereby enabling outstanding alkaline HER performance.
