Electro-oxidation using RuO 2 –IrO 2 /Ti plate anode and electrocoagulation using iron plate anode were widely applied to remove ammonia and phosphate in an aquatic environment, respectively. In this work, we designed magnetically bound ZVI microparticles on RuO 2 –IrO 2 /Ti plate as a composite electrode for the simultaneous removal of ammonia and phosphate from aqueous solution via combined EO and EC (EO/EC) processes. We present a series of experiments to study such simultaneous removal under an electric field via the EO/EC process. In the electrochemical unit, mZVI-RuO 2 -IrO 2 /Ti, mZVI-graphite, and RuO 2 –IrO 2 /Ti electrodes were used as anodes. The influence of applied voltage, initial pH, zero-valent iron dosage, reaction temperature, and organic compounds on the EO/EC process was also examined. Ammonia and phosphate could be completely removed at an applied voltage of 10 V, pH of 7, zero-valent iron dosage of 0.1 g, and reaction temperature of 35 °C using mZVI-RuO 2 -IrO 2 /Ti anode when influent ammonia and phosphate concentrations is 200 and 100 mg L −1 . Ammonia degradation was consistent with pseudo-zero-order kinetic model. The characterization was analyzed by scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Hence, the mZVI-RuO 2 -IrO 2 /Ti electrode can be used for efficient simultaneous removal of ammonia and phosphate.

Nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous hard carbon (NPC) that are capable of high N content, high specific surface area and high chemical stability has the potential to be a promising electrode material for energy storage application. Here we report a N-doped hierarchical porous hard carbon via a facile Ti-peroxy initiated in-situ polymerization of p -phenylenediamine. Ti-peroxy can also serve as a hard template to manipulate the formation of hierarchical porous. This nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous hard carbon has advantages of high N-content (7.2 at. %) and high surface area (1515 m 2 g −1 ), displaying a specific capacitance of 360 F g −1 and an extraordinary cycling stability above 98% after 30,000 cycles.

A bifunctional cake-like TiO2 was successfully synthesized via calcination of MIL-125(Ti) at a suitable temperature by a one-step method and was applied for As(III) removal by simultaneous photocatalytic oxidation and adsorption. The as-synthesized samples were characterized by XRD, TGA/DSC, SEM, TEM, N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, PL spectra, photocurrent, FTIR and XPS. The effects of calcination temperature on the specific surface areas of the samples, transformation of the TiO2 crystal phase and properties of As(III) removal were investigated. The results showed that higher calcination temperature resulting in a lower specific surface area and more transformations of the TiO2 crystal phase from anatase to rutile. The TiO2 calcined at 380 °C (MIL-125(Ti)-380 °C) exhibited excellent properties for As(III) removal, including photocatalytic oxidation of As(III) and simultaneous adsorption of the generated As(V). In addition, MIL-125(Ti)-380 °C could be reused at least four times without significant reduction in the photocatalytic oxidation and adsorption performances. The excellent photocatalytic oxidation and adsorption abilities of MIL-125(Ti)-380 °C can be attributed to the synergistic effects of strong photogenerated electron–hole separation and high specific surface area. The bifunctional cake-like TiO2 provides a wonderful strategy to remove As(III) completely from contaminated water using a single step.

Sb-doped SnO2 electrode was fabricated by the one-step pulse electro-codeposition method, and was modified through either cerium dioxide nanoparticle (nano-CeO2) or cerium ion doping. The results showed that the effects of nano-CeO2 doping and cerium ion doping are quite different. Nano-CeO2 doping shrinks the unit cell volume, improves the degree of crystallinity and refines crystalline grains, while cerium ion doping expands the volume and deteriorates the crystallinity. Nano-CeO2 doping mitigates the surface antimony enrichment and promotes the complete oxidation of antimony so that the majority of antimony oxidation states exist as the Sb5+ state, but cerium ion doping aggravates the enrichment and increases the Sb3+ content. Electrochemical phenol degradation showed that the Ti/Sb–SnO2–CeO2 electrode has a higher degradation efficiency and its kinetic rate constant is 1.46 times as much as that of Ti/Ce–Sb–SnO2. Besides, due to the compact active layer of Ti/Sb–SnO2–CeO2 protecting the titanium substrate from passivation, the accelerated service lifetime of Ti/Sb–SnO2–CeO2 is prolonged, which is 1.28 times as long as that of Ti/Ce–Sb–SnO2.

In this work, we demonstrate the first use of NiCoP nanosheet array on Ti mesh (NiCoP NA/Ti) as an efficient catalyst for hydrolysis of NaBH 4 in alkaline media . This catalyst shows a low activation energy of 52.68 kJ/mol for NaBH 4 hydrolysis meanwhile the hydrogen generation rate can achieve 3016.79 mL/min/g (NiCoP) at 303 K, outperforming most reported Co-based noble-metal-free catalysts and some noble-metal catalysts. Remarkably, the catalyst exhibits high recyclability , durability and controllability for on-demand hydrogen generation in alkaline NaBH 4.

Graphical Anodes go bimetallic : On cycling of as-prepared 3D CoTiO 3 nanofibers, during the first lithiation process, along with the formation of a Li 2 O matrix, Ti IV and Co II species were converted/reduced to Li x TiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) and metallic Co NPs, respectively, which suggested the electrochemical in situ formation of bimetallic transition-metal oxides (see figure). Bimetallic transition-metal oxides, which exhibit superior electrochemical properties compared with pristine single-metal oxides, have recently become a topic of significant research interest for applications in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, we report a simple and scalable electrospinning method to synthesize porous CoTiO 3 nanofibers as the precursor for nanostructured bimetallic transition-metal oxides formed electrochemically in situ. This strategy ensures uniform mixing and perfect contact between two constituent transition-metal oxides during the lithiation/delithiation process. Furthermore, CoTiO 3 nanofibers based on ultrafine CoTiO 3 nanocrystals are interconnected to form a nano/microstructured 3D network, which ensures the high stability of the in situ formed structure composed of bimetallic transition-metal oxides, and also fast ion/electron transfer and electrolyte penetration into the electrode. Electrochemical measurements revealed the excellent lithium storage (647 mAh g −1 at 0.1 Ag −1 ) and retention properties (600 mAh g −1 at 1 Ag −1 after 1200 cycles) of the CoO/TiO 2 electrode. Moreover, the electrochemical reaction mechanism was explored by using ex situ X-ray photoelectric spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry tests, which confirmed the two-phase reaction processes in the electrodes. These results clearly validate the potential of CoTiO 3 with a unique nano/microstructured morphology as the precursor for a bimetallic transition-metal oxide for use as the anode material for long-life LIBs.

Quantification of chromium in V–Cr–Ti ternary alloys, used as candidate structural materials for fusion reactors, is essential in view of its significant effect on the properties of these vanadium-based alloys. Various methods have already been used for the determination of chromium in common alloys, but most of these methods are based on complicated and expensive instruments or suffer from the serious matrix interference of vanadium. In this study, a simple, rapid and accurate spectrophotometric method was developed for the determination of chromium in V–Cr–Ti alloys without any prior separation and chromogenic agent. The alloy samples were dissolved in diluted sulphuric acid and concentrated nitric acid, and chromium was oxidized with persulphate in the presence of Ag(I) ions as a catalyst. After alkalization of the solution with sodium hydrate, greenish-yellow coloured chromate (CrO42−) ions were formed in the alkaline solution and had a maximum absorption peak at 374 nm. Beer's law was obeyed in the range of 0.15–12.0 μg mL−1 Cr(VI) at 374 nm and the molar absorptivity was 4.8 × 103 L mol−1 cm−1. All the variables were studied in order to optimize the analytical conditions. Vanadium and titanium seriously interfered with the determination of Cr(VI) and their interference can be eliminated by addition of ammonium tartrate. The proposed method is simple, fast, accurate and of low cost, and has been satisfactorily used for the determination of chromium in V–Cr–Ti alloys. The results are in good agreement with data given by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and the relative standard deviation is found to be lower than 0.4%.

In this work, the hybrid material NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti)@TpPa-NO 2 was synthesized by grafting an amino-functionalized titanium-based metal–organic framework (NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti)) with 2,4,6-tri(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine-nitro (TpPa-NO 2 ) moieties. The resulting composite material exhibited remarkable removal efficiency owing to the synergistic effects derived from the combination of the NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) and TpPa-NO 2 components. The material demonstrated excellent stability and recyclability, making it a promising candidate for the treatment of wastewater containing rhodamine-B (Rhd-B). Some characterization techniques were employed to elucidate the structural features and surface morphology of the hybrid material. The adsorption capacity of NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti)@TpPa-NO 2 for Rhd-B dye was evaluated, and the results revealed an exceptional removal efficiency of 99.96 % and a high adsorption capacity of 25.54 mg/g, highlighting the superior adsorption performance of the material. The adsorption process was found to follow Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetics, indicating that chemisorption is the predominant mechanism governing the uptake of Rhd-B dye onto NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti)@TpPa-NO 2 .

Lithium metal batteries have potentially high energy density, but severe uncontrolled lithium dendrites and unstable side reactions prevent large-scale applications. Serial three-dimensional porous poly (vinylidene fluoride) and copolymer membrane-based composite gel electrolytes are designed by introducing MIL-125 (Ti) and ethylene carbonate. Abundant lithium-ion transportation channels and homogeneous ion transport microregion are provided the new type porous fluoropolymer substrate. We also find that crystalline phase and dielectric properties of serial polymer membrane have significant impact on electrochemical performance for composite gel electrolytes. The mechanical and dielectric property of composite electrolyte enhanced by incorporating uniform and well distribution MIL-125 (Ti), which improve the electrolyte/electrode interface charge distribution and promote uniform lithium deposition, leading to lithium dendrite suppression. MIL-125 (Ti)/P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE) composite membrane shows the enhanced maximum strain of 181%, thermal stability (188°C) and corresponding composite gel electrolyte reflects higher ionic conductivity of 1.7 × 10 -3 S cm -1 and wider electrochemical window at room temperature than PVDF and PVDF-HFP composite electrolytes. Expectedly, quasi-solid state lithium metal battery of MIL-125 (Ti)/P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE) composite gel electrolyte exhibits higher discharge capacity (152.8 mAh g -1 ) at 240th cycle and 1 C, longer cycling life and better rate performance under large current density than PVDF and PVDF-HFP composite electrolytes.

Preparing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) film in situ on the surface of the Ti-6Al-4V (TC4) titanium alloy is challenging owing to the dense and stable surface TiO 2 passive film. In this study, titanium-doped zirconium-based MOFs (Zr(Ti)-MOFs) film was constructed in situ on the TC4 alloy in one step at a low temperature and atmospheric pressure, with ZrCl 4 as the source of Zr metal ions. ZrCl 4 attacked and dissolved the TiO 2 film to form Zr-O-Ti bonds on the surface of TC4 to provide nucleation sites for further reactions. At the same time, Zr 4+ and dissolved Ti 4+ combined in solution to form Ti containing Zr-O cluster nodes, which aggregated and grafted to the Zr-O-Ti bonds on the substrate surface, and reacted with organic ligands (terephthalic acid) to form Zr(Ti)-MOFs film. The Ti 4+ dissolved from the TC4 participate in the Zr-MOFs formation, thereby changing the high temperature and high-pressure conditions required for the traditional preparation of Zr-MOFs (UiO-66). The in situ preparation of Zr(Ti)-MOFs on TC4 was achieved at 80°C under atmospheric pressure conditions. This study elucidated the growth mechanism of Zr(Ti)-MOFs on the TC4 surface, providing a reference for the design and in-situ preparation of multifunctional MOFs on the TC4 titanium alloy.

Tetravalent metal phosphates (M(HPO4)2, M = Zr, Sn, and Ti) have robust layered structures with interlayer d spacings over 7.5 Å, but show poor electrical conductivity. On the other hand, single-atomic-layered reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets exhibit a high electrical conductivity. In this work, the combination of rGO and M(HPO4)2 is explored for their potential as anode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). Specifically, rGO/M(HPO4)2 composites are prepared, and their electrochemical performances are investigated systematically. In comparison with bare M(HPO4)2, the rGO/M(HPO4)2 composites exhibit larger specific capacity, higher rate capability, better cyclic stability, lower voltage for lithium ion insertion and extraction, and improved first Coulombic efficiency. We propose that the superior electrochemical performances of the composites are primarily contributed to the large interlayer space of M(HPO4)2 and the rGO sheets cladded on the surfaces of the layered M(HPO4)2. The attached rGO sheets bridge the layers together forming a network that is beneficial for the electron and ion diffusion within the composites, thus enhancing the discharge/charge rate capability of the composites. In addition, the attached rGO sheets provide extra anchoring sites for Li+; the specific capacity of the composites as anode materials is thus enhanced.

V–Ti magnetite tailings (VTMTs) contain various heavy metals , such as Fe, Mn, V, Co, and Ni. The groundwater pollution caused by the tailing metal release has become a local environmental concern. Although studies have demonstrated the influence of alternate flooding and drying cycles (FDCs) on metal form and mobility in minerals, little was known about whether FDCs affect the metal release of VTMTs and the transformation of released metals. This study investigated the metal release kinetics of VTMTs and the metal transformation under FDCs in the absence and presence of acid rain (sulfuric and nitric acids) and bio-secreted organic acids (acetic, oxalic, and citric acids). The results showed that FDCs promoted metal release whether or not acids were present. The maximum released concentrations of V, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni were as high as 78.63 mg L −1 ,1.47 mg L −1 , 67.96 μg L −1 , 1.34 mg L −1 , and 0.80 mg L −1 , respectively, under FDCs and citric acids . FDCs enhanced the tailing metal release by increasing the metal labile fraction proportion. However, the concentrations of released Fe, Mn, V, Co, and Ni all gradually decreased due to their (co-)precipitation. These precipitates conversely inhibited the subsequent mineral dissolution by covering the tailing surface. FDCs also enhanced the tailings’ porosities by 2.94%–9.94%. The mineral dissolution, expansion and shrinkage, and changes in tension destroyed the tailing microstructure during FDCs. This study demonstrated the low metal pollution risk of VTMTs under FDCs, either in acid rain or bio-secreted organic acids. However, the increase in tailing porosity should be seriously considered as it would affect the tailing pond safety.
