Ultrasonic-assisted preparation of Fe-MOF with rich oxygen vacancies for efficient oxygen evolution

Yuqi Li,Yue Zhang,Zhiyuan Wang,Chengxu Zhang,Fanming Meng,Jianqiang Zhao,Xinpei Li,Jue Hu

Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) materials with unique properties have attracted much attention in various fields. However, the limited number of active sites and the time-consuming synthesis process hinder their widespread application. Herein, this work demonstrates the first preparation of highly efficient and stable MOF (Fe-MOF-U) catalysts with enhanced specific surface area , morphology and active sites, through ultrasonic-assisted solvothermal method for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysis . The results show that the crystal size of Fe-MOF-U decreases significantly, and the specific surface area and pore size increase. In addition, many oxygen vacancies are produced in the crystal, making the reaction intermediates easier to form and thus improving the catalyst's oxygen evolution performance. The overpotential of Fe-MOF-U catalyst at 10 mA cm −2 is 221 mV, which is lower than that of the conventional solvothermal synthesized Fe-MOF-S (237 mV). Furthermore, the turnover frequency of the Fe-MOF-U catalyst is 3.32 s −1 at the overpotential of 300 mV, which is 5 times higher than that of Fe-MOF-S (0.70 s −1 ). In situ Raman and methanol molecular probe tests indicate a weakened adsorption of *OH on the Fe-MOF-U surface. DFT calculations are consistent with the characterization results, both proving that the ultrasonic-assisted solvothermal method can generate specific oxygen vacancy (μ 3 -O defect) in Fe-MOF-U which improved OER performance. This study provides a new idea for the morphology controlling and defect introduction of MOF and a new approach for its application.

One-pot preparation of surface vulcanization Co-Fe bimetallic aerogel for efficient sulfadiazine degradation

Fengjiang Chen,Fan Yang,Hongchen Liu,Sai Che,Ge Zhang,Chong Xu,Yongfeng Li

A novel magnetic surface vulcanized cobalt-iron aerogel (CoFe-S MA) with a self-supporting, crosslinked bimetallic nanowire structure was fabricated via NaBH 4 -mediated gelation followed by in-situ vulcanization with Na 2 S solution, which showed efficient sulfadiazine (SDZ) degradation through peroxodisulfate (PDS) activation. The optimized CoFe-0.2S aerogels exhibited the best degradation performance (99.8%) for SDZ (10 mg/L, 100 mL) within 15 min, and the total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency reached 53%. The excellent degradation performance was attributed to the accelerated redox process and rapid formation of sulfate radical (SO 4 ·- ) caused by bimetal synergistic effect, as well as the sufficient exposed active sites provided by the self-supporting hierarchical porous structure of the aerogel. Compared with CoFe-MAs, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) demonstrated lower resistance and more rapid charge transfer of CoFe-S MAs, which was ascribed to the presence of delocalized electrons in iron sulfides layer. A high turnover frequency (TOF) of 4.0 L∙min −1 ∙g −1 was achieved due to that the reduction effect of S 2- on the surface promoted the regeneration of Fe and Co active species. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching experiments revealed the dominant reactive oxide species (ROS) to be SO 4 ·- , ‧OH, and Fe (Ⅳ). This work paves the way for the application of metal aerogels in the field of advanced oxidation process based on sulfate radical (AR-AOPs).

Mingxuan Fu,Guyang Ning,Jiaxian Liu,Qi Zhang,Yuena Sun,Xinyu Fan,Haiyang Wang,Haijun Lu,Yufan Zhang,Huan Wang

What is essential to solving energy scarcity problems is that develop the high activity, durable and non-noble metal-based dual-functional electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER). In this work, a series of core-shell structure M@Fe–Cu-GR nanocubes (NCs) are prepared. In the prepared process, the bimetallic FeCu prussian blue analogues (PBA) is used as precursor, transition metals ions Co 2+ and Ni 2+ are introduced into the FeCu-PBA using the exchange of potassium ions with other metal ions , and then the FeCu-PBA are successfully loaded on the graphene oxide (GO) employed the attraction of opposite charges between polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDDA) and GO. Electrochemical tests show that the Tafel slope of Co–Ni@Fe–Cu–GR NCs for HER and OER are 60 and 82 mV dec −1 , respectively, and Co–Ni@Fe–Cu–GR NCs shows excellent performance in long-term stability test.

Fe/S-Modified MIL-125 for Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation of Antibiotics: Performance and Mechanism

Shuai Wang,Peiyao Chen,Huanhuan Li,Yingning Wang,Xiongwei Liang,Changhao Yao,Yang Yang

Antibiotics have been extensively used in medicine and aquaculture, leading to severe environmental contamination. Among them, chlortetracycline (CTC) has attracted considerable attention due to its large consumption and high residual risk. MIL-125(Ti), as a representative titanium-based metal–organic framework, exhibits good structural stability and tunability; however, its intrinsically weak visible-light response and rapid charge recombination limit further photocatalytic applications. To improve its photocatalytic performance, MIL-125 was first synthesized via a hydrothermal method, and then Fe and S species were introduced through a combination of in situ coprecipitation and mild sulfuration, yielding an Fe/S-modified MIL-125 photocatalyst. The introduction of Na2S induced defect sites and coordinatively unsaturated centers on the MIL-125 surface, while the cooperative participation of Fe species further regulated the surface electronic structure and active-site distribution, thereby enhancing visible-light absorption and interfacial charge transfer. Under AM 1.5 irradiation, the optimized Fe/S-MIL-125 achieved a CTC degradation efficiency of 98.6% within 120 min at an initial concentration of 40 mg L−1. In addition, the material exhibited broad applicability toward multiple antibiotics, with degradation efficiencies exceeding 87% for ciprofloxacin (CIP) and clindamycin (CLI). Cycling tests demonstrated that the catalyst retained high activity after five successive runs, indicating excellent stability. Radical scavenging experiments and ESR analyses revealed that superoxide radicals (·O2−) were the dominant reactive species. Overall, the Fe/S-modified strategy significantly enhanced the photocatalytic performance of MIL-125 through defect engineering and interfacial charge regulation, offering a promising approach for the design of MOF-based materials for antibiotic removal.

Synergistic toluene degradation by Co/Fe foam monolithic catalyst coupled with floating electrode plasma

Zhengyan Liu,Xiaoli Su,Jie Li,Nan Jiang,Muhammad Imran,Yunxia Chen

A plasma-catalytic system coupled with floating electrode discharge with metal foam-supported catalysts was developed for efficient toluene degradation. The influences of different transition metal oxides (Co, Mn, Ce) loaded onto Fe foam (FF) substrates on the crystal structure, surface morphology and catalytic performance were systematically investigated. Catalysts were symmetrically placed on both sides of the floating electrode. Among the investigated metal oxides, Co was found to form a uniformly distributed CoFe 2 O 4 surface layer on the FF substrate, while Mn and Ce were heterogeneously dispersed as MnO 2 and CeO 2 , respectively. All metal-loaded catalysts enhanced the discharge power of the reactor, attributed to surface charge accumulation on metal oxides. The Co/FF catalyst exhibited the highest toluene degradation efficiency, CO 2 selectivity and O 3 decomposition capability. This plasma-Co/FF system significantly reduced the O 3 concentration from 112 ppm (plasma alone) to 26.2 ppm at a specific input energy (SIE) of 232 J/L. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that Co sites in CoFe 2 O 4 possess a lower O 3 adsorption energy and higher charge density potential to a higher oxygen vacancy formation tendency, promoting O 3 activation. This study provides an understanding of the mechanistic basis for the rational design of efficient plasma-catalytic systems for toluene removal.

Application in biological motion monitoring: Novel PVA/PAANa/PDMC/PTh@Fe-BDA conductive hydrogel

Jie Song,Youming Chang,Yu Zhang,Lijun Chen,Lei Li,Yidan Li

Aiming at the problems of limited conductivity and poor stability of traditional ionic hydrogels, this study prepared polythiophene composite (PTh@Fe-BDA) as a conductive filler, and then designed poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) network, sodium poly(acrylic acid) (PAANa), and poly([2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride) (PDMC) polyelectrolyte network to construct dual network (DN) gels by introducing conductive fillers into the polymer matrix. When PTh@Fe-BDA was added in the amount of 0.9 g, the tensile strength of the conductive hydrogel was 0.825 MPa, the toughness was 0.0039 MJ/m 3 , and the electrical conductivity was 1155.556 mS/m. The hydrogel exhibited good adhesion and recovery after cycling tests. PVA/PAANa/PDMC/PTh@Fe-BDA conductive hydrogel strain sensing can respond to mechanical stimuli and generate accurate, stable and recoverable electrical signals, and can be used as a flexible wearable device for multiple monitoring strains and subtle movements in different body parts, and can also be used as a capacitive pen to fluently write and draw on the screen of a cell phone or tablet computer. This new multifunctional conductive hydrogel has a wide range of application prospects in electronic skin, motion monitoring and human–computer interaction.

The varied magnetic polarons and related photoluminescence behaviors of layer PA2CdCl4: Fe(III) structures

Chaowei Huang,Qilin Wei,Shuaigang Ge,Xiaodong Shen,Kaihuang Huang,Bingsuo Zou

Ferromagnetic polaron (FMP) coupling and antiferromagnetic polaron (AMP) coupling have been extensively studied in zero-dimensional and three-dimensional structures. However, studying their electronic structures and photophysical processes in layer structures still faces significant challenges. In this work, we synthesized minor and rich Fe ion-doped PA2CdCl4 layer structures by slow-cooling crystallization and adjusting the Fe ion concentration. In minor Fe ion-doped PA2CdCl4, the Fe–Fe ion pair easily replaces the Cd–Cd pairs in the corner-sharing octahedra layer to form a FMP and promote a red emission (618 nm) from localized exciton-magnetic polarons (LEMPs). In the rich Fe ion doping, AMPs can be easily formed when Fe ions obtain electrons from NH2 and convert into a low-spin state, coexisting with FMPs. The increasing number of AMPs promote the formation of a new Fe-aniline charge-transfer band; the co-work of AMPs and the Fe-aniline charge-transfer band result in a blue emission (466 nm). The result of the magnetic field-dependent photoluminescence (PL) measurement indicates that the population, energy and the spin direction of AMPs and FMPs can have a direct impact on the luminescence behavior of Fe ion-doped PA2CdCl4 layered structures. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation result indicates that Fe–Fe pairs under ferromagnetic (FM) coupling interact via dx2–y2 and dz2 orbitals. Fe–Fe pairs under antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling on the dxy and dz2 orbitals. This work provides new insights into the varied magnetic polarons of layer structures and their effect on PL behavior.

Structural regulation and coupled electrical-magnetic properties of biomass-derived Fe-incorporated carbon aerogels

Xu Yihua,Huang Linghai,Hu Dinggen,Ke Yu,Li Hongyan,Yang Jun,Fu Bingqing,Zhao Huifang,Sha Lizheng,Sun Minnan,Yuan Tianzhong

To develop biomass‑derived magnetic conductive carbon aerogels toward energy storage and electromagnetic shielding applications, magnetic conductive carbon aerogels were rationally fabricated using chitosan (CS) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as raw biomass precursors via Fe 3+ coordination cross-linking, directional freeze-drying and high-temperature carbonization strategies. The effects of precursor ratio on the microscopic morphology and electrical conductivity of as-prepared aerogels were systematically explored. The results indicated that the optimized CS/CMC-50%-C aerogel possessed a large specific surface area of 458.9 m 2 ·g −1 , well-developed hierarchical porous architecture and superior graphitization degree. During high-temperature pyrolysis, in situ generated Fe 3 O 4 nanocrystals together with formed Fe–C bonds successfully endowed the aerogel with favorable magnetic behavior and simultaneously reinforced the interconnection of internal conductive networks. Benefiting from the above structural and compositional merits, the resultant aerogel achieved low resistivity of 0.454 Ω·cm and maintained stable electrical conductivity and integral structural integrity after ten consecutive charge–discharge cycles. This work provided a promising route to prepare lightweight magnetic conductive biomass aerogels. Graphical abstract High-porosity precursor aerogels were prepared from Fe 3+ cross-linked biomass via directional freezing, and the subsequent carbonization yielded magnetic carbon aerogels with 3D porous structure and excellent electrical conductivity stability.

Electrodeposition-induced Fe-coordinated gradient dual-network hydrogel electrolyte for carbon-based symmetric supercapacitors

Junke Cai,Xujing Zhang,Xinmei Li,Jiahao Ma,Lirong Wei,Yutong Chen

Electrodeposition enabled a Fe-coordinated gradient hydrogel electrolyte. • Fe migration regulated the spatial distribution of coordination crosslinks. • Amide-related covalent linkages and Fe–O coordination formed a dual network. • The gradient dual network balanced mechanical stability and ion transport. • The AC//AC device retained 90.67% capacitance after 10,000 cycles. Hydrogel electrolytes for quasi-solid-state carbon-based supercapacitors need to balance structural stability, ion transport, and electrode/electrolyte interfacial compatibility, which often constrain each other. Here, we developed a carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS)–sodium l -aspartate (AspNa)–Fe gradient dual-network hydrogel electrolyte through an electric-field-induced electrodeposition strategy. In this system, CMCS/AspNa formed a hydrophilic polymer framework; 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC·HCl, hereafter abbreviated as EDC) promoted the formation of amide-related covalent linkages, providing stable skeletal support; and Fe–O coordination was introduced through the in situ release of Fe species from a sacrificial Fe anode. During electrodeposition, electric-field-driven migration coupled with concentration diffusion produced a non-uniform Fe distribution, leading to a spatially heterogeneous coordination/covalent dual network within the hydrogel. FTIR, XPS, and SEM/EDS analyses revealed amide-related covalent linkages, Fe–O coordination, and a gradient Fe distribution, supporting the formation of the gradient dual-network structure. Among the samples with different EDC contents, the hydrogel prepared with 2.0% (w/v) EDC showed a suitable balance between compressive stability and ion transport. The AC//AC symmetric supercapacitor assembled with this hydrogel electrolyte delivered a device-level specific capacitance of 22.81 F g⁻¹ at 0.5 A g⁻¹ and retained over 90% of its initial capacitance after 10,000 cycles at 1 A g⁻¹, with a Coulombic efficiency close to 100%. These results highlight the role of the electrodeposition-induced gradient coordination/covalent network in coupling mechanical support, ion transport, and interfacial stability in quasi-solid-state carbon-based supercapacitors. Bifunctional Ionophores for Cuproptosis Activation: Dual Targeting of Copper and Fe–S Protein Homeostasis

Yang Liuxin,Cheng Yiyu,Qin Si,Jiang Jun,Zhong Shiyi,Bi Xinyue,Xu Jiali,Wang Kai,Qiu Shuang,Li Xiang

Cellular resilience to therapy often arises from adaptive mechanisms that safeguard iron–sulfur (Fe–S) proteins. Here, we present a rational strategy to overcome such resilience by integrating two synergistic vulnerabilities, copper toxicity and Fe–S cluster homeostasis, into a single molecular scaffold. Inspired by a bacterial sulfur mobilization (SUF) inhibitor, we hybridized its core structure with a copper-transporting 8-hydroxyquinoline moiety to generate HDQ , HDQ-S , HDQ-Ph , and HDQ-Me . They coordinate copper via hydroxyquinoline and efficiently transport copper into cancer cells, with HDQ-Me achieving an efficacy comparable to that of the clinical copper ionophore elesclomol ( ES ). Strikingly, HDQ alone suppresses Fe–S proteins across multiple functions, including respiration, iron homeostasis, and DNA replication. HDQ -mediated copper loading triggers cuproptosis hallmarks, DNA damage, and ATP collapse, generating a synergistic lethality. This work establishes HDQs as bifunctional tools that cotarget copper and Fe–S protein homeostasis, validating a convergent therapeutic strategy against resilient cells.

Fe-Bi Diatomic Sites with Interactive Regulation for Enhancing Oxygen Reduction Activity and Selectivity

Pengxiang Zhang,Yumeng Wu,Shuling Liu,Xiaofeng Zhang,Xianji Guo,Xianli Wu,Yanyan Liu,Baojun Li

Rational design of heteronuclear dual‑atom catalysts with strong electronic coupling and spatial complementarity for highly selective 4e– oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) remains a significant challenge in electrocatalysis. Herein, a catalyst, Fe–Bi diatomic structures anchored in a cellulose-derived activated carbon matrix (FeBiDA@CC), was obtained for ORR, in which the Fe and Bi atoms exerted a synergistic effect through strong electronic coupling. Bi modulates Fe's spin and electronic structure, while Fe promotes Bi electron polarization and activation of outer shell electrons. The Fe–Bi spatial distance in the dual metal sites geometrically matches O2 bond length, optimizing modes of adsorption and activation to facilitate the preferred 4e– ORR pathway and improve catalytic stability. FeBiDA@CC exhibits a half-wave potential of 0.93 V, an electron transfer number of 3.92–4.00, and a current loss of only 7.2% after 100 h for ORR. Liquid and flexible zinc-air batteries based on FeBiDA@CC as a cathode catalyst demonstrate outstanding peak power densities of 200.5 and 96.6 mW cm–2, respectively, alongside excellent long-term cycling stabilities of 10,800 and 438 cycles, respectively. This work offers a novel perspective for electronic structural regulation and design of p-block element-based catalysts, opening new possibilities for the design of catalysts in the energy storage field.

An advanced Fe/Ti substituted tunnel-type cathodes for high-performance sodium-ion batteries

Rui Huang,Shaohua Luo,Qi Sun,Lixiong Qian,Shengxue Yan

Although lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) offer high energy density and long cycle life, their large-scale application is hindered by the scarcity and high cost of lithium resources. sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have emerged as a promising alternative for large-scale energy storage due to the abundance and low cost of sodium. However, the development of high-performance SIBs is impeded by structural instability in cathode materials, primarily caused by the relatively large ionic radius of Na + , which induces lattice strain and phase transitions during cycling. In this work, a Fe/Ti co-doped tunnel-type sodium manganese oxide cathode material, Na 0.55 Mn 0.9 Fe 0.05 Ti 0.05 O 2 (NaMO55-FT5), was successfully synthesized via a high-temperature solid-state method. The structural evolution and electrochemical behavior of the material were systematically investigated. It was found that synergistic Fe/Ti doping effectively expanded Na + interlayer spacing, mitigated Jahn-Teller distortion through Mn 3+ stabilization, and disrupted Na + /vacancy ordering, thereby enhancing both Na content and structural integrity. As a result, the NaMO55-FT5 material delivered an initial discharge capacity of 98.5 mAh g −1 at 0.5C, retains 72.0% of its capacity after 300 cycles, and maintained a reversible capacity of 55.2 mAh g −1 at a high rate of 5C, demonstrating outstanding cycling stability and superior rate capability. This study presented a rational design strategy based on dual-metal co-doping for developing high-sodium-content, structurally robust tunnel-type cathode materials, offering valuable insights for advancing the practical deployment of SIBs in grid-scale energy storage applications.
