Cholesterol is an important lipid compound found in a variety of foods, and its level in human blood is closely related to human health. Therefore, development of rapid and accurate POCT (point-of-care testing) methods for cholesterol detection is crucial for assessing food quality and early diagnosis of diseases, in particular, in a resource-limited environment. In this study, a smartphone-assisted colorimetric biosensor is constructed based on platinum,phosphorus-codoped carbon nitride (PtCNP 2 ) for the rapid detection of cholesterol. Phosphorus-doped carbon nitride is prepared by thermal annealing of urea and NH 4 PF 6 , into which platinum is atomically dispersed by thermal refluxing. The obtained PtCNP 2 exhibits an excellent peroxidase-like activity under physiological pH, whereby colorless o -phenylenediamine (OPD) is oxidized to colored 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), which can be produced during the oxidation of cholesterol by cholesterol oxidase. A smartphone-assisted visual sensing system is then constructed based on the color recognition software, and rapid on-site detection of cholesterol is achieved by reading the RGB values. Meanwhile, the generated DAP shows an apparent fluorescence signal and can realize highly sensitive detection of cholesterol by the change of the fluorescence signal intensity. Such a cholesterol sensor exhibits a wide linear detection range of 0.5–600 μg mL −1 and a low detection limit of 59 ng mL −1 . The practicality of the sensor is successfully demonstrated in the rapid detection of cholesterol in serum and food.

Transition metals (TMs) are widely employed to improve poor intrinsic activity of biochar for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation towards water purification. However, the mechanistic effects of TMs on carbon substrates requires further understanding. Herein, we constructed TM-modified C-Ni and C-Ni-Co catalysts via simple pyrolysis of rice husk precursor, optimizing carbonaceous morphologic and electronic structures. The Co-Ni-Co (0.013 min −1 ) exhibited over 10 times higher performance than pristine biochar for iohexol (IOH) removal. Systemic spectroscopic and electrochemical measurements indicate that embedded Ni increases graphitization degree facilitating IOH adsorption by π-π conjugated attraction. And, the anchored Co enhances work function promoting electron extraction for selective generation of 1 O 2 . The interfacial d-p orbital hybridization increases the acidic degree on biochar for PMS adsorption, accelerating electron exchange for PMS activation. Our work attempts to study the complex interaction between carbon and metal sites by orbital hybridization to design efficient PMS activators for Fenton-like decontamination.

As a typical toxic substance in environmental water, phenolic pollutants, represented by p -nitrophenol, pose a great threat to the ecological environment. In this study, using WCl 6 and oxalic acid as raw materials, a novel p -nitrophenol (PNP) sensor fabricated by tungsten phosphide (WP) nano-particles, has been successfully designed and constructed, which expanded the application of WP nano-materials in the field of electroanalysis. The successful synthesis of WP has been confirmed by a series of characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The electrochemical experiments were all carried out in phosphate buffer solution with the pH of 6.5. The WP nano-particles can electrocatalytically oxidize PNP to produce a current for the detection of PNP. The reaction sites of PNP are predicted by Gaussian 09 and Multiwfn. Prominent performance has been recorded for PNP sensor, attaining a wide linear range from 10.00 to 6500.00 μM, a low detection limit of 1.59 μM with the reliable selectivity, repeatability, and stability. Gratifyingly, the prepared sensor could satisfy the requirements of PNP determination in actual environmental water, such as tap water and rainwater.

Comprehensive Summary Photocatalytic aerobic oxidative desulfurization (PAODS) is a sustainable alternative technology to traditional, energy-intensive fuel desulfurization methods. Nonetheless, its advancement is hindered by the notable challenge of inadequate electron-hole separation efficiency within the existing catalytic systems. Herein, a Janus 2D/2D heterostructure composed of Co 3 O 4 and CoMoO 4 is reported for the PAODS of thiophenic sulfides. Through a combination of detailed experimental characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we elucidate the formation of a type II p-n heterojunction in the catalyst, significantly enhancing electron-hole separation through electric field force and reducing the possibility of electron-hole recombination due to the spatial separation of redox centres. The photocatalyst exhibits exceptional activity and demonstrates an impressive performance of 10.4 mmol·g –1 ·h –1 in the oxidation of dibenzothiophene (DBT). Moreover, the photocatalyst demonstrates profound desulfurization capabilities in real diesel, reinforcing its promising prospects for industrial application. These discoveries provide invaluable insights, both scientifically and practically, towards the development of advanced photocatalysts for PAODS processes.

Rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs) rely on the development of high-performance bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts to facilitate efficient oxygen reduction/evolution reactions (ORR/OER). Single-atom catalysts (SACs), characterized by their precisely defined active sites, have great potential for applications in ZABs. However, the design and architecture of atomic site electrocatalysts with both high activity and durability present significant challenges, owing to their spatial confinement and electronic states. In this study, a strategy is proposed to fabricate structurally uniform dual single-atom electrocatalyst (denoted as P-FeCo/NC) consisting of P-bridging Fe and Co bimetal atom (i.e., Fe-P-Co) decorated on N, P-co-doped carbon framework as an efficient and durable bifunctional electrocatalyst for ZABs. Experimental investigations and theoretical calculations reveal that the Fe-P-Co bridge-coupling structure enables a facile adsorption/desorption of oxygen intermediates and low activation barrier. The resultant P-FeCo/NC exhibits ultralow overpotential of 340 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for OER and high half-wave potential of 0.95 V for ORR. In addition, the application of P-FeCo/NC in rechargeable ZABs demonstrates enhanced performance with maximum power density of 115 mW cm −2 and long cyclic stability, which surpass Pt/C and RuO 2 catalysts. This study provides valuable insights into the design and mechanism of atomically dispersed catalysts for energy conversion applications.

Metal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have garnered much attention in recent years. Despite the remarkable advancements in PSCs utilizing traditional metal electrodes, challenges such as stability concerns and elevated costs have necessitated the exploration of innovative electrode designs to facilitate industrial commercialization. Herein, a physically and chemically stable molybdenum (Mo) electrode is developed to fundamentally tackle the instability factors introduced by electrodes. The combined spatially resolved element analyses and theoretical study demonstrate the high diffusion barrier of Mo ions within the device. Structural and morphology characterization also reveals the negligible plastic deformation and halide-metal reaction during aging when Mo is in contact with perovskite (PVSK). The electrode/underlayer junction is further stabilized by a thin seed layer of titanium (Ti) to improve Mo film's uniformity and adhesion. Based on a corresponding p–i–n PSCs (ITO/PTAA/PVSK/C 60 /SnO 2 /ITO/Ti/Mo), the champion sample could deliver an efficiency of 22.25%, which is among the highest value for PSCs based on Mo electrodes. Meanwhile, the device shows negligible performance decay after 2000 h operation, and retains 91% of the initial value after 1300 h at 50–60 °C. In summary, the multilayer Mo electrode opens an effective avenue to all-round stable electrode design in high-performance PSCs.

Cells have greatly inspired advancements in chemical processes, including leveraging the idea of cascade catalysis to drive thermodynamically unfavorable reactions and mimicking the compartmentalized architecture to design novel nanostructures. Here, a single-particle cascade catalysis promoted gas sensing platform is inspired to be designed (denoted as CoSnO 3 @mCeO 2 ) by positionally assembling n-type mesoporous CeO 2 catalytic shell on p-type CoSnO 3 gas sensitive core. Uniform CoSn(OH) 6 @mCe(OH) x core–shell particles with tailored mesostructures, tunable large mesopores, and adjustable shell thicknesses are first constructed. After thermal treatment, CoSnO 3 @mCeO 2 particles are obtained, which serve as cascade catalysis enhanced sensitive layer for fabricating gas sensors with independent catalytic and sensing control. As a proof-of-concept, the CoSnO 3 @mCeO 2 gas sensors exhibit nearly three times higher acetone sensitivity ( R g /R a = 26.81–50 ppm) than individual CoSnO 3 sensors with an ultralow limit of detection of 5.22 ppb. The enhanced sensitivity is achieved through a tandem catalytic reforming-oxidation sensing procedure, which begins with the primary catalytic reforming of acetone to acetic acid in the mCeO 2 shell, followed by the secondary sensing reaction of acetic acid in the CoSnO 3 core. The design concept of cascade catalysis promotes gas sensor can serve as a paradigm for developing single-particle functional nanodevices for various applications.

Zintl-phase thermoelectrics with CaAl 2 Si 2 -type structures exhibit desirable “phonon-glass electron-crystal” behavior. However, the development of environmentally friendly p-type counterparts remains challenging. While n-type Mg 3 Sb 2 -based compounds have achieved high figures of merit ( zT > 2.0), their integration with non-Zintl systems is hindered by thermal and chemical mismatches. Moreover, many existing p-type Zintl compounds rely on toxic (Cd, Pb) or scarce (Yb, Ge) elements, restricting their scalability and sustainability. Here, we report a scalable, rare-earth- and toxicity-free p-type Zintl compound, Ca 0.5 Mg 1.297 Ag 0.003 Zn 1.2 Sb 2 , developed via targeted Mg-site substitution. First-principles calculations reveal that Ca substitution at Mg1 sites induces beneficial electronic structure modifications, including bandgap widening, valence band sharpening, and an indirect-to-direct bandgap transition, collectively enhancing carrier mobility (50 cm 2 ·V -1 ·s -1 ) and strengthening carrier-phonon scattering at elevated temperature. Simultaneously, trace Ag doping at Mg2 sites precisely tunes the carrier concentration by nearly one order of magnitude, achieving improved electrical conductivity while maintaining ultralow thermal conductivity. As a result, the optimized compound achieves a peak zT of 0.81 at 773 K and an average zT of 0.50 over 300–773 K. These results demonstrate a chemically stable, sustainable, and high-performing Zintl platform, offering a promising strategy for advancing eco-friendly thermoelectric technologies.

Poly (p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) nanofiber films are promising candidates for next-generation electronics due to their superior thermal stability, mechanical strength, and heat dissipation capability. However, fabricating high-quality PBO nanofiber film remains challenging due to its inherent poor solubility and infusibility. Current sol–gel methods for fabricating PBO nanofiber films suffer from the tedious operation, environmental risk, and potential structural defects, thereby limiting their performance and applications. A hierarchical assembly strategy is demonstrated to optimize the fabrication and aggregation structure of PBO nanofiber films through proton-acceptor solvents such as H 2 O. By controlling nanofiber aggregation and enhancing molecular alignment via external force-assisted crystallization, high-performance PBO nanofiber films are achieved with exceptional properties: great in-plane thermal conductivity (25.85 W·m −1 ·K −1 ), outstanding tensile strength (189.98 MPa), and remarkable thermal stability (T 5% ≈ 517 °C). Remarkably, assembling PBO nanofibers (PBONFs) in high concentration into PBO wet films takes just a few minutes, drastically enhancing preparation efficiency. When applied as flexible printed circuit board substrates, PBO nanofiber films effectively homogenize temperature fields, suppressing local hotspots and reducing surface temperatures by 16.7 °C. This strategy offers a scalable solution for manufacturing high-performance PBO nanofiber films, demonstrating significant potential for advanced thermal management in next-generation electronics.

The mixed phosphate Na₄Fe₃(PO₄)₂(P₂O₇) (NFPP) via synergistic coordination of mixed [PO₄]/[P₂O₇] anion groups achieves a flat voltage plateau at 3.2 V (vs. Na + /Na) and a theoretical specific capacity of 129 mAh g −1 , but its practical application is still limited by its inherent low electronic conductivity. Through structural integration of polyanion-type cathode materials, this study innovatively designed and constructed hierarchical Na₄Fe₃(PO₄)₂(P₂O₇)@C mesoporous microspheres (NFPP@CMMS). The NFPP nanocrystals uniformly embedded in a three-dimensional interconnected meso porous carbon matrix (pore size distribution: 2–5 nm). Such hierarchical meso/micro-nano architectures provided expansive ion-exchange interfaces, accelerating Na + de/intercalation kinetics while enhancing electronic conductivity and mitigating structural collapse during cycling. Consequently, the NFPP@CMMS delivers exceptional reversible discharge capacity (121 mAh g −1 at 0.1C), outstanding rate capability (72 mAh g −1 at 50C), and superior cycling stability (90.70 % capacity retention after 3500 cycles at 5C). This triple-synergy strategy—combining nano-confinement effects, interconnected mesoporous channels, and carbon-encapsulated network—provides a novel pathway for developing practical sodium-ion battery cathodes.

The advancement of PMS (peroxymonosulfate)-activating platforms with high activity and wide adaptability carries substantial significance in wastewater remediation. Employing dual-phase modification via phosphorization and H₂-Ar etching, we fabricate multi-component active centers (sulfides/phosphides) to achieve enhanced activity and extended degradation capability toward diverse pollutants. To evaluate practical applicability, key process parameters, including catalyst dosage, PMS concentration, and TC (tetracycline) concentration, were optimized. Concurrently, the effects of common interfering ions, pH variations, and different water matrices (river water and seawater) on TC degradation were investigated. Results demonstrate that the catalytic system achieves 100 % TC removal at 20 mg L −1 TC and 94.5 % removal at 30 mg L −1 TC. The system maintained high degradation efficiency with minimal impact from interfering ions and diverse water sources, demonstrating robust environmental adaptability. Additionally, it exhibits efficient degradation performance across a wide range of contaminant species. ESR (electron spin resonance spectroscopy) analysis coupled with quenching experiments verified that ·OH, SO₄· − , and 1 O₂ mediate organic pollutant degradation, wherein singlet oxygen ( 1 O₂) plays a dominant role.
