Novel BHMTP-Modified Hydroxyapatite for the Efficient Removal of Cu2+ and Zn2+ Ions from Water

Ying Li,Jin Cui,Guangwei Ji,Cuiyun Bai,Mingzhu Xia,Fenghe Wang,Fengyun Wang,Zhiren Zhao

This study developed a novel Bis(1,6-hexamethylenetriamine penta(methylenephosphonic acid)) (BHMTP)-modified hydroxyapatite (30BH-HAP) composite for efficient removal of heavy metal ions. The material was synthesized via coprecipitation and characterized by BET, FTIR, XRD, and SEM. BHMTP incorporation increased the specific surface area from 88.38 to 140.3 m2/g (a 58.7% enhancement) and total pore volume from 0.27 to 0.35 cm3/g. In separate batch adsorption experiments, the optimized 30BH-HAP exhibited exceptional adsorption capacities of 239.5 mg/g for Cu2+ and 268.3 mg/g for Zn2+ at pH 6.0, which are 6.12 and 5.38 times higher than commercial HAP, respectively, and surpass most previously reported adsorbents. Mechanistic studies combining Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, Independent Gradient Model (IGM), and Hirshfeld surface analysis revealed that BHMTP’s phosphonic acid groups form stable coordination complexes (P═O···M2+) with metal ions. The material maintained >80% regeneration efficiency after 5 cycles and demonstrated strong interference resistance (>84% capacity retention in the presence of 10 mM Ca2+). This work provides a sustainable strategy for heavy metal ion remediation through the functional reuse of industrial phosphonates, offering novelty in material design and application.

Intramolecular electronic modulation enabled high-capacity Zn2+/H+ co-insertion in benzoquinone-fused anhydride cathode

Yuhui Lv,Xinyu Gao,Binghui Guo,Xinyi Li,Chenhui Sun,Suhang Wang,Rongshi Jing,Jiaxin Chen,Liying Pu,Min Zhang,Yanyan Liu,Gang Wang,Yucheng Ren,Tiantian Gu

Organic materials have attracted considerable attention in rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) due to their sustainability and structural tunability. However, the electrochemical performance of existing organic electrodes is severely constrained by limited redox-active sites, high solubility and short conjugated backbones. Herein, a conjugated N-heterocyclic anhydride-based framework, benzoquinone-fused dianhydride (NTBQ), was constructed via solid-state condensation to enable highly reversible Zn 2+ /H + storage. The strategic integration of C=O groups triggers intramolecular electrostatic potential reconstruction and activates adjacent C=N sites, enabling fast and thermodynamically spontaneous multi-electron Zn 2+ /H + co-insertion. The rational structural design endows the NTBQ cathode with a remarkable initial discharge specific capacity of 434.6 mAh g −1 at 0.05 A g −1 and excellent rate capability. Moreover, the extended π-electron delocalization significantly strengthens intermolecular π-π interactions, enhancing the dissolution resistance of NTBQ in aqueous electrolytes and affording long-lasting cycling durability (88.1% retention after 10,000 cycles at 10 A g −1 ). Systematic mechanistic studies demonstrate that the superior electrochemical performance originates from the synergistic redox chemistry of C=O/C=N dual-active centers within the anhydride-based skeleton. These findings demonstrate that intramolecular electronic modulation can effectively evoke multi-electron redox activity, providing an effective avenue for designing high-performance organic cathodes toward advanced AZIBs. Structural optimization from NTPH to NTBQ via incorporation of additional C O groups induces intramolecular electrostatic potential redistribution, enhancing π-electron delocalization and activating adjacent C N sites. This creates synergistic C O/C N dual-redox centers for efficient multi-electron Zn 2+ /H + co-insertion. Download: Download high-res image (130KB) Download: Download full-size image

Synergistic Zn2+ Desolvation and Diffusion Acceleration for High-Performance Aqueous Zinc Batteries at Low Temperature

Yiwen Xiao,Hao Ruan,Chaoqiong Zhu,Jiaqi Li,Yue Zou,Benhe Zhong,Fang Wan,Xiao-Dong Guo

Aqueous zinc batteries (AZBs) suffer severe performance degradation at subzero temperatures due to sluggish Zn2+ desolvation kinetics, limited ions diffusion, and structural instability of conventional cathodes. Herein, phenylbutylamine (PBA) molecules are intercalated into layered V2O5 to construct VO-PBA with dual-functional mechanisms for low-temperature AZBs. The pre-intercalated PBA molecules act as structural pillars to expand the interlayer spacing, significantly enhancing Zn2+ diffusion kinetics. Simultaneously, VO-PBA facilitates the desolvation of [Zn(H2O)6]2+ by lowering the desolvation energy barrier, thereby mitigating excess H2O insertion. Density functional theory calculations further confirm smoother Zn2+ migration pathways and enhanced electronic conductivity in VO-PBA. Leveraging these synergistic effects, the VO-PBA cathode achieves exceptional low-temperature performance, delivering a high capacity of 201 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 and nearly no capacity fading over 1000 cycles at 1 A g−1 at −30 °C. This work provides a simple cathode optimization paradigm for low-temperature AZBs.

A highly sensitive turn-on fluorescent chemosensor for recognition of Zn2 + and Hg2 + and applications

Xu Tang,Juan Han,Yun Wang,Xu Bao,Liang Ni,Lei Wang,Longhua Li

A fluorescence probe has been designed and synthesized, and applied with a combined theoretical and experimental study. Research suggests that the probe can be used to sense Zn 2   + and Hg 2   + through selective turn-on fluorescence responses in the aqueous HEPES buffer (0.05M, pH   =   7.4). The limit of detection (LOD) were determined as 1.46   ×   10 −   7   M (Zn 2   + ) and 2.50   ×   10 −   7   M (Hg 2   + ). Moreover, based on DFT, the geometry optimizations of probe 1, [1-Hg 2   + ] complex and [1-Zn 2   + ] complex were carried out using the Gaussian 09 program, in which the B3LYP function was used. The electronic properties of free probe 1 and the metal complexes were studied based on the Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) analyses. The probe 1 has also been successfully applied to detection of Zn 2   + and Hg 2   + in living cells.

Mn2+-Based narrow-band green-emitting Cs3MnBr5 phosphor and the performance optimization by Zn2+ alloying

Binbin Su,Maxim S. Molokeev,Zhiguo Xia

To discover new narrow-band green-emitting phosphors is a challenge for backlighting light-emitting diodes (LEDs) used in liquid crystal displays (LCDs). The synthesis and optical properties of Cs3MnBr5 are demonstrated herein. The intrinsic Mn2+ luminescence without concentration quenching leads to intense green emission at 520 nm with narrow full width at half maximum of 42 nm and high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 49% under the excitation at 460 nm. When a small amount of Zn2+ is introduced into Cs3MnBr5, the luminescence intensity decreases slightly. However, the thermal stability of Cs3MnBr5 is improved from 82% to 87% with the intensity values at 423 K compared to that at 298 K. The white LED device fabricated using Cs3Mn0.96Zn0.04Br5 (green) and K2SiF6:Mn4+ (red) phosphors with a blue LED chip exhibit a high luminous efficiency (107.76 lm W−1) and wide color gamut (101% National Television System Committee standard (NTSC) in Commission Internationale de L’Eclairage (CIE) 1931 color space), demonstrating its potential application in wide color gamut LCD backlights.

An inorganic salt reinforced Zn2+-conducting solid-state electrolyte for ultra-stable Zn metal batteries

Qi Han,Xiaowei Chi,Yunzhao Liu,Liang Wang,Yuexiu Du,Yang Ren,Yu Liu

The rapid development of flexible and wearable electronics calls for advanced batteries with high safety, long cycling stability, and low cost. Aqueous Zn metal batteries (ZMBs) are some of the most promising candidates. The main challenges are the water-induced parasitic reactions (corrosion and passivation) and dendrite-driven battery failure in traditional liquid electrolytes. Developing new electrolyte systems is critical to overcoming these issues. Herein, an ultrastrong self-standing gelatin-based solid-state electrolyte (GSE) formed by strong hydrophobic interaction between gelatin molecule chains is first introduced for stable solid-state ZMBs. The GSEs prepared by a facile soaking strategy contain much less free water compared to conventional electrolyte systems and exhibit the highest fracture tensile strength of 2.78 MPa among the reported self-standing single-component solid-state electrolytes for ZMBs, which effectively inhibit the corrosion/passivation reaction and enable the Zn/Zn symmetric cells to stably cycle at hitherto the highest current density of 5 mA cm−2 with record high cumulative plating/stripping capacity. Meanwhile, the solid-state Zn/MnO2 full cell can deliver a high reversible specific capacity of 285 mA h g−1, superior cycling stability (90% capacity retention/500 cycles), and excellent safety under extreme working circumstances. The impressive performance sheds light on the design and applications of robust solid-state electrolytes for ZMBs.

Zn2+-responsive palladium nanoclusters synergistically manage Alzheimer’s disease through neuroprotection and inhibition of oxidative stress

Xiaoyu Yuan,Ran Tang,Zhi Jia,Yutong Chen,Jie Liu,Yanan Liu

The current focus on inhibiting β-Amyloid (Aβ) aggregation has shown great limitations for the management of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Multi-target strategies that synergistically exert neuroprotective effects and alleviate oxidative stress are effective strategies to modulate the AD microenvironment. Herein, a novel Zn 2+ -responsive nano-drug delivery platform (NWP) is developed using palladium nanoclusters (Pd NCs) as carriers, loaded with nerve growth factor (NGF), capped by supramolecular nanovalves containing carboxyl pillars[5]arenes (WP5) for the treatment of AD. Pd NCs have both OH elimination and catalase activities to alleviate oxidative stress. The larger specific surface area could significantly improve the loading capacity of NGF. The supramolecular nanovalve constructed by WP5 achieves precise targeting and controlled release of NGF with Zn 2+ responsiveness, thereby improving the utilization of loading drugs. In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrates that NWP effectively scavenges reactive oxygen species (ROS), protects neuronal cells from oxidative damage and modulates microglial polarization (the pro-inflammatory M1-phenotype microglial transition to the anti-inflammatory M2-phenotype), thus reducing the release of pro-inflammatory factors and alleviating neuroinflammation. Furthermore, intracerebral injection of NWP significantly ameliorates the learning and memory deficits of AD model mice. Overall, this Zn 2+ -responsive multi-target therapy provides a new option for AD.

Stimulating Zn2+ permselectivity for prominent zinc anode reversibility by designing a self-assembled artificial layer

Panpan Wang,Bin Sun,Xiaolin Wei,Liwen Yang,Hui Wu

Although zinc anodes are extensively adopted to meet aqueous energy storage, serious dendrite formation and side reaction resulting in inferior lifetime have hindered the application. In this work, a unique interfacial engineering is proposed by a self-assembled artificial layer tightly contact to the surface of zinc anode with Zn 2+ permselectivity. Such artificial layer via a facile hydrolysis consists of nano inorganic particles well dispersed in organic network. The screening for the bound water of Zn 2+ enables excellent anticorrosion during cycling and rest situation. Meanwhile, the modified zinc anode can reduce the Zn 2+ nucleation barrier for uniform distribution, which is beneficial to dendrite suppression. Consequently, the modified zinc anodes in both symmetric and full cells exhibit prominently electrochemical reversibility. Specifically, with a cycling area capacity of 3.0 mAh cm −2 at 1.0 mA cm −2 , the modified zinc anode can tolerate superior plating/stripping behavior over 1000 h. When it is coupled with vanadium pentoxide cathode, the performance advantage of the modified full-cell is still impressive and high-capacity retention of ∼84 % after 1200 cycles is achieved.

Preparation of Zn2+ doped NiCo2O4: Hole transport layer for high performance of perovskite solar cells

Dongfang Lv,Jingchuang Han,Zhaowu Li,Jie Xiong,Pingfan Du,Lixin Song

Inorganic hole transport materials (HTMs) play an important role for the stability and efficiency of planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Among the numerous inorganic HTMs, NiCo 2 O 4 with its excellent performance is the emerging candidate for hole transport layers (HTLs) and is attracting increasing attention. However, the low electrical conductivity and optical transmittance of NiCo 2 O 4 severely limit the device performance. Herein, the Zn 2+ was used to dope NiCo 2 O 4 to improve the electrical conductivity and optical transmittance of NiCo 2 O 4 . And the effects of the concentration of Zn 2+ on the morphology, structure and properties of NiCo 2 O 4 were investigated. The morphology and transparency of Zn x Ni 1-x Co 2 O 4 would not be affected when the concentration of Zn 2+ is below 0.1, but when it is up to 0.15 and 0.2, the morphology of NiCo 2 O 4 clustered together or showed a diamond-shaped block, and the optical transmittance also decreased significantly. Meanwhile, with the increase of doping amount, the conductivity and hole mobility are gradually increased. As a result, the optimal concentration of Zn 2+ is 0.1. Besides, the Zn 0.1 Ni 0.9 Co 2 O 4 possessed a significant improvement in hole extraction and better band alignment compared to the NiCo 2 O 4. And hence, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSCs fabricated in open air is up to 13.41% by using Zn 0.1 Ni 0.9 Co 2 O 4 . This work develops a potential strategy for developing highly efficient and stable PSCs, opens up a new horizon for the development of inorganic HTMs.

Zn2+ ions cross-linking sodium alginate encapsulated bacterial cellulose/ZnO composite film for antibacterial application

Song Baiqing,Zhang Tianyi,Yang Kaili,Tian Guangming,Dang Yunzhi,Ma Jianhua

To realize the biocompatibility, mechanical strength, and sustained antibacterial properties of medical materials, it is feasible to introduce antibacterial material components into biomass matrix to prepare medical materials. Herein, zinc oxide (ZnO) was in-situ synthesized in bacterial cellulose (BC) dispersion and filtered into a film, and the BC/ZnO composite film was further immersed in sodium alginate (Alg) solution to construct the second layer structure. The microstructure, mechanical strength, and antibacterial properties of the composite films were investigated systematically. The tensile strength of the BC/ZnO/CAlg sample was achieved at 16.5 ± 2.4 MPa, much higher than that of the Zn 2+ crosslinked CAlg film of 11.5 ± 1.2 MPa. The Zn 2+ cross-linked Alg in the outer layer and the BC/ZnO composite film in the inner layer combined to create a synergistic effect. This secondary structure design ensures good hydrophilicity and hygroscopicity of the material which enables the sustained-release migration of Zn 2+ from the inner layer to the outer layer. Finally, the BC/ZnO/CAlg composite film possesses excellent antibacterial performance against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. In addition, this work systematically expounds on the antibacterial and slow-release mechanism of secondary structure composite membranes. The results will provide a database and theoretical reference for applying BC/ZnO/CAlg composite membranes in the medical field.

Artificial bi-functional layers promoting Zn2+ desolvation and homogeneous deposition for reversible zinc metal anodes

Jiahao Chen,Miao He,Anjun Hu,Mengjiao Liu,Chuan Zhao,Bo Zhou,Runjing Li,Zhongfu Yan,Yu Pan,Yining Fan,Jing Liu,Liujun Cao,Jianping Long

Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZHSs) are drawing extensive attention because of their cost-effectiveness and diminished safety hazards. Nevertheless, large-scale application of ZHSs has been hindered by the severe side reactions and rampant dendrites growth on the surface of Zn metal anodes. Herein, we propose a three-dimensional organic–inorganic composite frame material as an artificial bi-functional layer coated on the zinc foil, featuring nitrogenous functional groups with zincophilicity (abbreviated as NCFM@Zn). The nitrogen (N) site's strong adsorption capacity and synergistic effect of the sub-nanopore size promote rapid desolvation of zinc ions and reduce side reactions, while also prolonging galvanized nucleation's Sand's time and allowing for even nucleation. Moreover, the uniform distribution of N on the layer results in homogeneous zinc ions flux and supports consistent zinc plating while inhibiting dendrites generation. As a result of this unique artificial bi-functional layer, symmetric Zn cells can survive 2500 h at 2.5 mA cm −2 . High-areal-capacity zinc||activated carbon hybrid supercapacitors also demonstrate 20,000 cycles at high Coulombic efficiency, thus highlighting the utter convenience and potential of this strategy for modifying rechargeable metal hybrid supercapacitor surfaces.

Effects of heavy metal ions Cu2+/Pb2+/Zn2+ on kinetic rate constants of struvite crystallization

Guangyuan Chen,Tong Zhou,Meng Zhang,Zhongxiang Ding,Zhikun Zhou,Yuanhui Ji,Haiying Tang,Changsong Wang

Struvite (MAP) crystallization technology is widely used to treat ammonia nitrogen in waste effluents of its simple operation and good removal efficiency. However, the presence of heavy metal ions in the waste effluents causes problems such as slow crystallization rate and small crystal size, limiting the recovery rate and economic value of the MAP. The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of concentrations of three heavy metal ions (Cu 2+ , Zn 2+ , and Pb 2+ ) on the crystal morphology, crystal size, average growth rate, and crystallization kinetics of MAP. A relationship was established between the kinetic rate constant K t calculated by the chemical gradient model and the concentrations of heavy metal ions. The results showed that low concentrations of heavy metal ions in the solution created pits on the MAP surface, and high level of heavy metal ions generated flocs on the MAP surface, which were composed of metal hydroxides, thus inhibiting crystal growth. The crystal size, average growth rate, MAP crystallization rate, and kinetic rate constant K t decreased with the increase in heavy metal ion concentration. Moreover, the K t demonstrated a linear relationship with the heavy metal concentration ln( C / C* ), which provided a reference for the optimization of the MAP crystallization process in the presence of heavy metal ions.
