An electrocatalyst prepared via a metal–polyphenol assembly strategy for efficient nitrate reduction

Jing Jiang,Xiaoli Jiang,Lin Zhao,Yagang Zhang

The electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) is promising for achieving the dual goals of sustainable ammonia production and wastewater remediation. Nevertheless, the highly selective ammonia (NH3) synthesis remains a formidable challenge, primarily attributed to the complex reaction pathway, instability of metal-based catalysts, and the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, we propose a novel electrocatalyst (TA–Fe/Co3O4) prepared via a metal–polyphenol assembly strategy integrating natural plant polyphenol (tannic acid, TA) and iron (Fe) molecular assembly. Active components are anchored and stably dispersed on TA, while Fe incorporation is conducive to accelerating reaction kinetics, synergistically enhancing the electrocatalytic efficiency of spinel Co3O4. The catalyst delivers a faradaic efficiency (FE) of up to 94.36% at −0.2 V vs. RHE and an exceptional NH3 yield rate of 206.50 μmol h−1 cm−2 (−0.5 V vs. RHE). This work presents a facile and economical route for designing efficient transition metal oxide catalysts for the reduction of nitrate to NH3.

Eco-friendly synthesis of ferric ion-polyphenol-graphene aerogel for solar steam generation

Xiaming Feng,Dawei Sun,Jinglei Yang

Graphene based photothermal materials show great promise in solar steam generation for seawater desalination and wastewater purification. However, the facile and green fabrication of efficient graphene aerogel light absorber remains a challenge. Here we demonstrate the eco-friendly preparation of tannic acid modified graphene as solar-to-thermal material through electrochemical exfoliation and subsequent sonication procedure. The as-prepared aerogel exhibits good photothermal effect and high solar-to-evaporation efficiency. By crosslinking with ferric ion, a more efficient ferric ion-polyphenol-graphene complex aerogel was developed to construct the high-performance solar vapor generation device. The defect-free structure of exfoliated graphene and ferric ion-polyphenol complex contributed to the high evaporation rate of 1.3 kg m −2  h −1 and energy efficiency of 86.3% under one sun illumination.

An unconventional nano-AIEgen originating from a natural plant polyphenol for multicolor bioimaging

Lei Lu,Mengyao Yang,Youngseo Kim,Tingting Zhang,Nahyun Kwon,Haidong Li,Sungnam Park,Juyoung Yoon

Biocompatible aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials from natural resources are of great interest for a variety of potential applications. Here, we report the unconventional AIE nature of the green tea polyphenol epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which is investigated by observing the disappearance and reoccurrence of fluorescence when EGCG is dissolved and recrystallized in aqueous solutions. The intermolecular through-space conjugation and structural rigidification induced by multiple intermolecular H-bonds play critical roles in the AIE phenomenon. This inspires the development of a multicolored, monodisperse, photostable, and non-toxic nano-AIE luminogen (nano-AIEgen), which is simply prepared by polyphenol-amine-based crosslinking in aqueous solutions, demonstrating great potential for living cell bioimaging. Our strategy to develop nano-AIEgens using AIE-active hydrophilic natural products—e.g., plant polyphenols, such as tannic acid, that exhibit similar AIE characteristics—can help push the boundary of the exploration of various novel, large-scale, biocompatible, water-soluble, and degradable AIE materials from natural resources.

Biomimic Conductive Hydrogel Based on Polyphenol-Modified Cellulose Nanocrystals for Flexible Mechano-sensors

Bin Yang,Longfei Jiang,Songteng Luo,Yuan Yao,Yuanyuan Cao,Yongsheng Li

Excellent mechanical properties and force–electric coupling are essential for flexible conductive hydrogels, enabling their applications in soft robotics, wearable sensors, and human–machine interfaces. However, such hydrogels often face a fundamental trade-off between mechanical strength and electrical sensitivity. Inspired by the “soft–hard” architecture strategy in biological mechanical tissues and mussel-inspired multimode interacting mechanisms, we report the fabrication of a composite conductive hydrogel with enhanced mechanical strength, fatigue resistance, universal surface adhesion, and highly sensitive mechano-sensing capabilities by incorporating tannic acid-modified cellulose nanocrystals (CNC@TA) into an interpenetrating polyacrylamide/poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(acrylic acid)/Al3+ multinetwork hydrogel matrix. The TA functionalization provides the CNCs with abundant cross-linking and interaction sites, enabling strong bonding with the surrounding matrix through physical entanglements, hydrogen bonding, π–π stacking, and coordination interactions. The hydrogel exhibits universal adhesion to various substrates and achieves well-performed mechanical property with elongation up to 765%, tensile strength around 83 kPa, and toughness around 276 kJ/m3. Simultaneously, the coordinated Al3+ ions provide the hydrogel with excellent ionic conductivity and a high strain sensitivity (gauge factor of up to 2.7). With superior mechanical properties and force–electric coupling performance, this hydrogel holds broad application potential in flexible electronics, human–machine interaction devices, and biomimetic materials.

Metal-polyphenol networks functionalized Mg2B2O5 whiskers for multifunctional intumescent flame-retardant polypropylene composites

Jiachen Zhu,Zi Wang,Hongfei He,Chuanshen Wang,Feng Zhao,Lu Liu,Donghai Zhu,Bicheng Lin,Keqing Zhou,Bin Yu

Polypropylene (PP) is a widely used commodity thermoplastic in electronics, automotive and new energy applications, yet its inherent flammability, severe melt dripping, toxic smoke emission and unsatisfactory functional compatibility greatly limit its use in high-performance engineering scenarios. Herein, a core-shell flame-retardant synergist (MB@TA-Ni) was fabricated by in-situ assembly of bio-based tannic acid-nickel (TA-Ni) nanoparticles on Mg 2 B 2 O 5 whiskers (MB), and incorporated into piperazine pyrophosphate (PAPP)-based intumescent flame-retardant PP to prepare high-performance multifunctional nanocomposites. With a total flame-retardant loading of 22 wt%, replacing only 1 wt% PAPP with MB@TA-Ni raised the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of the composite to 33.2%, achieved a UL-94 V-0 rating with full suppression of melt dripping, and reduced the peak heat release rate (PHRR), peak smoke production rate (PSPR) and peak CO production rate (PCOPR) by 72.4%, 84.7% and 70.0%, respectively, compared to neat PP. The fire performance index (FPI) was enhanced by 3.1 times and the fire growth index (FGI) decreased by 97.4%, indicating significantly mitigated fire hazards. Moreover, the composite exhibited an 89.0% increment in unnotched impact strength, realizing the simultaneous integration of exceptional flame retardancy, anti-dripping, smoke suppression and mechanical robustness. The underlying synergistic mechanism is elucidated, whereby MB@TA-Ni reinforces the intumescent char barrier and catalyzes char graphitization in the condensed phase, while PAPP quenches reactive free radicals to terminate combustion chain reactions in the gas phase. This work provides a facile yet efficient strategy for developing multifunctional fire-safe polyolefin composites, which hold great application promise in high fire-risk engineering fields.

Fe3+-Mediated Interfacial Polyphenol Coatings on Hair Fibers Using an Aronia melanocarpa Extract

Su Yan,Yinghui Gu,Yifei Kong,Yudi Xiang,Bohan Yang,Xiaomeng Su,Li Sheng,Kai Song

Aronia melanocarpacontains abundant phenolic compounds, including procyanidins, flavonols, flavan-3-ols, and phenolic acids, but its pronounced astringency limits its broader use in food applications. Catechol and other oxygen-donor motifs in plant phenolics are known to associate with Fe3+and can support metal–phenolic assembly. In this study, ultrasound-assisted cellulase–pectinase extraction was used to recover anA. melanocarpapolyphenol extract, which was subsequently combined with Fe3+to construct a plant-derived hair dye coating on keratin fibers. Under optimized extraction conditions, the total phenolic yield reached 82.315 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g dry fruit. A limited targeted LC–MS/MS panel was used to evaluate 12 selected non-anthocyanin phenolic analytes, including procyanidin dimers, a flavan-3-ol, flavonols, and phenolic acids; the contribution of the pH-sensitive anthocyanin fraction was not resolved. Among the tested metal ions, Fe3+produced the strongest chromogenic response. The optimized L-cysteine pretreatment–Fe3+mordanting–polyphenol dyeing sequence produced a ΔE* of 55.42. Adsorption experiments empirically described the uptake behavior of the polyphenol extract, whereas complementary surface, spectroscopic, elemental, diffraction, thermal, and wettability analyses were consistent with the presence of a relatively uniform Fe-containing polyphenol coating at the hair fiber interface. Neither the adsorption-model fits nor the individual characterization techniques uniquely resolved the underlying molecular mechanism. Preliminary HET-CAM, single-exposure dermal, and acute eye irritation assessments showed no obvious acute irritation under the tested conditions. An exploratory image-based analysis examined whether standardized hair tress photographs could approximate a predefined colorimetric score. Because only 30 independent original samples were available and no external validation was performed, this analysis was treated solely as a proof of concept. This laboratory proof-of-concept extends established Fe3+–polyphenol assembly chemistry to a compositionally complexA. melanocarpaextract for hair fiber coloration. Further work is required to clarify anthocyanin behavior, simplify the sequential protocol, and benchmark its performance against representative commercial hair dyes.

Gold-Polyphenol Nanoplatform for Lenvatinib Delivery and Photothermal Therapy in Hepatocellular Carcinoma Treatment

Xu Chen,Hongwei Tang,Mingxun Chen,Yujiang Ji,Wen-Zhi Guo

Lenvatinib serves as a crucial therapeutic agent for hepatocellular carcinoma; however, its clinical application is severely restricted by poor aqueous solubility, suboptimal bioavailability, and systemic adverse effects. To overcome these limitations, we developed a novel gold-polyphenol-based self-assembled nanoplatform (ALE) via a green, one-pot synthesis strategy integrating epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), lenvatinib, and gold ions. The resulting ALE nanoparticles exhibited uniform morphology, excellent physiological stability, and an exceptional photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE) of 51.2% under 808 nm laser irradiation. In vitro studies demonstrated that ALE-mediated photothermal therapy (PTT) significantly inhibited tumor cell proliferation by inducing apoptosis through the upregulation of heat shock proteins (HSP70/90) and caspase-3 activation. Notably, the treatment also triggered a potent pro-inflammatory response, evidenced by the increased secretion of TNF-α, IL-6, and TGF-β. In vivo, ALE served as an effective contrast agent for photoacoustic (PA) imaging, enabling precise tumor delineation. Furthermore, ALE-mediated PTT effectively alleviated tumor hypoxia and achieved complete tumor suppression in an H22 liver cancer xenograft model without causing systemic toxicity or organ damage. This study presents a robust, safe, and multifunctional nanoplatform that enhances the therapeutic efficacy of lenvatinib through synergistic photothermal ablation and tumor microenvironment modulation.

Polyphenol self-polymerized three-layer Janus membranes with unidirectional fluid transport and bioactivity

Xin Lan,Jiataiqi Li,Youqian Xu,Xingcen Liu

Uncontrolled exudate accumulation and bacterial colonization are two major obstacles to wound healing. Here we report a three-layer Janus fibrous membrane that integrates exudate management, broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging within a scalable, one-step fabrication platform. The membrane was constructed by electrospinning polycaprolactone (PCL) and PCL/gelatin layers, after which a polyphenol self-polymerizing coating was deposited on the bottom PCL face by immersion in alkaline Tris buffer. Six natural polyphenols—tannic acid (TA), catechol (CC), pyrogallol (PG), gallic acid (GA), hydroxytyrosol (HT), and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)—were screened under identical conditions. The coating converted the bottom face from hydrophobic (∼130°) to strongly hydrophilic (20–30°), generating a wettability gradient that drives spontaneous unidirectional fluid transport from the wound interface toward the outer barrier layer. Among the six chemistries evaluated, poly-TA and poly-EGCG coatings delivered the strongest overall performance: > 90% inhibition of both S. aureus and E. coli, DPPH and ABTS radical-scavenging efficiencies of ∼70% and ∼90%, respectively, and > 85% RAW 264.7 macrophage viability under H₂O₂-induced oxidative stress at 1 mg mL⁻¹ . Performance across all endpoints correlated positively with ortho-phenolic hydroxyl count, a structure–activity relationship consistently borne out by antibacterial, cell-free antioxidant, and intracellular ROS assays. These findings demonstrate that a single polyphenol immersion step can simultaneously confer asymmetric wettability and multifunctionality on electrospinning membranes, offering a practical and chemically versatile route toward next-generation wound dressings. Structure–activity analysis links this gradient of performance to the number and ortho-positioning of phenolic hydroxyls in each monomer. The strategy is mild, substrate-tolerant, and one-step, and offers a generalizable platform for multifunctional asymmetric wound dressings. Synergistic Calcium Phosphate–Polyphenol Reinforcement Enables Tough, Antibacterial, and Biocompatible PLA-Based Hydrogels

Chunying Si,Yueru Li,Haoyi Wang,Quanxing Zhang,Haodi Wu,Wei Jiang

Although extremely attractive for biomedicine, degradable hydrogels often suffer from poor mechanical properties and bacterial contamination. Herein, ultrafine calcium phosphate oligomers (CPOs, 9 wt.‰) and tannic acid (TA) were integrated into a poly(acrylamide-co-lactic acid) (PAMLA) hydrogel to construct a composite hydrogel PAMLA-CPO9/TA with a dynamic multinetwork architecture. In this sustainable and synergistic reinforcement strategy, CPOs serve as inorganic cross-linking nodes that enhance mechanical robustness and resistance to deformation, while TA introduces reversible hydrogen and coordination bonding, providing additional structural stabilization and bacterial antiadhesion properties. The resulting PAMLA-CPO9/TA hydrogel exhibited a tensile strength of 0.19 MPa at 398% elongation and a compressive strength of 2.81 MPa at 80% strain, representing a 4-fold enhancement in the mechanical response over pristine PAMLA. The relative bacterial adhesion of Escherichia coli on the PAMLA-CPO9/TA hydrogel was reduced by over 99% compared to PAMLA, demonstrating excellent biocompatibility by maintaining >92% HeLa cell viability. The synergistic inorganic–organic, calcium phosphate–polyphenol interactions enabled significantly improved mechanical properties and excellent bacterial-repelling and biocompatibility of the PAMLA-CPO9/TA hydrogel, holding a great potential for designing sustainable, multifunctional, and degradable materials for wound-dressing applications.

Antagonistic Polyphenol Interactions Underlie the α-Glucosidase Inhibitory Activity of Keemun Black Tea

Xiao-Lan Yu,Xizhe Zhu,Xinxin Lv,Jingming Ning,Haibo Yuan

The α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of Keemun black tea arises from complex interactions among its major polyphenols, which cannot be reliably predicted from the activities of isolated compounds. In this study, eight dominant polyphenols were investigated using a quantitative reconstruction–omission framework designed to reflect typical household tea brewing. The fully reconstructed system recovered approximately 72% of the inhibitory activity of the diluted native infusion, supporting the functional representativeness of the selected compounds. Systematic omission experiments revealed that antagonistic interactions, particularly among theaflavins, dominated the net inhibitory outcome, with removal of the most potent inhibitor, theaflavin-3,3′-digallate (TFDG), paradoxically increasing overall activity. Pairwise Combination Index analysis further demonstrated concentration-dependent biphasic interactions, exemplified by the epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG)–TFDG pair, while molecular docking suggested overlapping binding sites as a potential structural basis for competitive inhibition. Collectively, this work provides a system-level dissection of α-glucosidase inhibition in black tea. Although the reconstructed system does not fully capture all contributions, the proposed framework offers a generalizable strategy for investigating interaction-driven bioactivity in complex dietary matrices and for further mechanistic studies.

Polyphenol-Scaffolded Modular Assembly of Heterotypic Cell–Cell Assemblies for Potentiating Cancer Immunotherapy

Guidong Gong,Qimin Yin,Qinling Liu,Yajing Zhang,Jinyuan Liu,Mengyuan Dai,Jiawen Li,Xianglian He,Jiezhou Pan,Yunxiang He,Bo Wang,Jiyu Tong,Junling Guo

Cells existing in the form of clusters often exhibit distinct biological functions from their single-cell counterparts. However, the ability to modulate cell–cell interactions among multiple cell types through molecular scaffolds remains an ongoing challenge. Here, a supramolecular phenolic network on surfaces of live cells designed is engineered to act as modular scaffolds that promote intercellular interactions, presenting a universal platform for the construction of cell–cell assemblies (CCAs). Utilizing the inherent cell surface affinity of supramolecular phenolic network modules, a series of heterotypic CCAs is efficiently established by assembling five distinct microorganisms and five types of mammalian cells. A specific application of CCAs with the combination of L. casei and macrophages ( L. casei @Mφ) is highlighted for enhanced cancer immunotherapy. Upon intravenous administration, L. casei @Mφ allows the chemotactic Mφ to facilitate the accumulation of L. casei at the tumor. The accumulated L. casei enables the polarization of tumor-associated Mφ toward a pro-inflammatory phenotype, markedly improving the immunotherapeutic response, slowing tumor progression, and mitigating lung metastasis. This work demonstrates the potential of polyphenol-scaffolded modular assembly in manipulating cell–cell interactions to enhance multicellular cooperation, offering a general approach to controlling complex cellular behaviors.

Metal-polyphenol network coating for cardiovascular implants to prevent thrombosis and promote endothelialization

Yuhua Du,Xinyi Chen,Hang Chen,Biao Wang,Yan Gong,Xin Li,Jin Wang,Yuancong Zhao

Cardiovascular implants, such as stents, often face challenges including thrombosis, intimal hyperplasia, and delayed reendothelialization due to endothelial damage post-implantation. To address these issues, this study developed a multifunctional metal-polyphenol network (TEC-Cu) coating capable of in situ nitric oxide (NO) generation via glutathione peroxidase-like catalytic activity. The TEC-Cu coating was fabricated through a simple dip-coating process by chelating a tripodal Schiff base polyphenolic ligand (TEC) with copper ion (Cu²⁺). In vitro evaluations demonstrated that the coating achieved sustained NO release (1.13 ×10⁻¹⁰ mol·cm⁻²·min⁻¹), effectively inhibiting platelet adhesion/activation (about 80 % reduction) and prolonging activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT by 82.5 s). Additionally, TEC-Cu significantly enhanced endothelial cell proliferation while suppressing smooth muscle cell hyperplasia (about 50 % reduction), attributed to the synergistic effects of polyphenol-mediated bioactivity and NO-driven signaling. Surface characterization confirmed the successful coordination of Cu²⁺ with phenolic hydroxyl groups, forming a stable, hydrophilic interface. Hemocompatibility tests revealed negligible hemolysis (<5 %). These results highlight the TEC-Cu coating’s dual functionality in anticoagulation and endothelialization, offering a promising strategy for next-generation cardiovascular implants to mitigate thrombosis and restenosis.
