In this work, a novel core@double-shell three-layer structure adsorbent (Fe3O4@SiO2@Zn–TDPAT) [TDPAT = 2,4,6-tris(3,5-dicarboxyl phenylamino)-1,3,5-triazine] was prepared to remove congo red (CR) and methylene blue (MB). The as-obtained magnetic adsorbent Fe3O4@SiO2@Zn–TDPAT was characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectra, vibrating sample magnetometry, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The influencing adsorption parameters including adsorbent amounts, extraction time, pH, and ionic strength were investigated. Under the optimized conditions, the removal efficiencies of CR and MB reached 100 and 99%, respectively. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model were suitable to illustrate the adsorption processes of CR and MB. The thermodynamic values, including Gibbs free energy (ΔG°), enthalpy (ΔH°), and entropy (ΔS°), showed that the adsorption processes were spontaneous and endothermic in nature. Moreover, the obtained nanocomposite remained stable in different acid–alkaline solutions and exhibited good reusability after multiple cycles. All of the experimental results indicated that Fe3O4@SiO2@Zn–TDPAT could be a potential adsorbent to purify dye wastewater.

This study presents a novel method using a gold-inlaid iron-based nanoenzyme (Au@MIL-53(Fe)) to rapidly detect phoxim, a neurotoxic organophosphate pesticide, in animal feed. The porous structure of MIL-53(Fe) acts as small-molecular ionic isolation lattices (SMILES), creating a solid-matrix surface confinement induced fluorescence enhancement (SSCIFE) environment for gold nanoclusters (AuNCs), enabling stable fluorescence at 642 nm and 435 nm. Additionally, it catalyzes TMB oxidation by hydrogen peroxide for colorimetric detection. Ascorbic acid 2-phosphate (AAP) is hydrolyzed by acid phosphatase (ACP) to ascorbic acid (AA), altering fluorescence and color signals. Phoxim inhibits ACP, modulating these signals and restoring the TMB color shift. The detection limits are 1.10 ng/mL (fluorescence), 1.02 ng/mL (colorimetry), and 1.04 ng/mL (smartphone colorimetric platform), respectively. The recovery rate of this method in feed is 84% ~ 116%. It offers a rapid, sensitive, and reliable solution for pesticide monitoring and food safety assurance.

The novel Cu-based bimetal polycrystal@carbon (C-HK(Cu/M)) composites derived from metal (Ni, Zn and Co) in-situ substituted Cu-based HKUST-1 were successfully fabricated by partial reduction strategy and employed for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). Systematic characterization demonstrated that Ni showed stronger orbital hybridization with Cu than Zn and Co, thereby significantly improving the catalytic properties of the C-HK(Cu/Ni) composite. The presence of Ni in HKUST-1 efficiently inhibited the reduction of adjacent Cu clusters, leading to the generation of unique polycrystal NiO/Cu/CuO nanohybrids (2.4–8.0 nm) with high dispersion (Cu exposure reaching 88.5%). While, the MOF ligands were catalyzed by doping Ni into the conductive and porous carbons, and finally engineered interfacial synergistic catalysis for enhancing the kinetics and stability for the reduction of 4-NP. The porous support accelerated 4-NP diffusion and adsorption in the composite, and as a consequence, the surrounding polycrystal nanohybrids on conductive carbon were responsible for producing hydrogen reducing species for 4-NP reduction. Therefore, C-HK(Cu/Ni) exhibited ultrafast kinetics and turnover frequency (TOF) for 4-NP reduction, which were up to 179 and 14 times higher than parent C-HK(Cu), surpassing the current state-of-the-art noble metal catalysts. Moreover, the activity of C-HK(Cu/Ni) was evaluated for six consecutive runs with minimal loss, demonstrating the high reusability and practicability of the catalyst on an industrial scale.

In the manuscript, we developed a novel strategy to effectively improve the visible light absorption of Ti-based MOF by extending the conjugated degree of organic ligands in Ti-based MOFs. The freebased 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin (H 2 TCPP) as organic linkers was used to facilely synthesize Ti-based MOFs (Ti-TiTCPP MOFs). The structural, morphologic and optical properties of Ti-TiTCPP MOFs were investigated. Ti-TiTCPP MOFs was applied to photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B(RhB) and the photocatalytic degradation performances of Ti-TiTCPP MOFs were compared with that of NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) MOFs under mercury lamp , xenon lamp and daylight lamp irradiation, respectively. The results showed the photocatalytic degradation performances of Ti-TiTCPP MOFs are superior to that of NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti) MOFs in visible region. Furthermore, the photocatalytic degradation mechanism of Ti-TiTCPP MOFs was investigated in detail based on the electrochemical and photoelectrochemical results associated with previously reported photocatalytic degradation mechanisms of NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti). The possible electrochemical and photoelectrochemical reactions and the changes of Gibbs free energy were analyzed. The degradation possible pathways of RhB and the emerging main intermediate contaminants were carefully analyzed by HPLC-HRMS under the present different solution parameters. And then the photocatalytic system based on Ti-TiTCPP MOFs was successfully applied to deal with real industrial textile wastewaters.

Defective-rich and electron-rich mesoporous NH 2 -MIL-125(Ti)@ZnIn 2 S 4 /CdS hierarchical tandem heterojunctions were fabricated through two-step solvothermal and one-step hydrothermal strategies. The interface with electron enrichment can cause active interface reaction, fast transfer and separation of charge carriers and restrain the photocorrosion of CdS. ZnIn 2 S 4 , as a bridge to connect Ti-MOFs and CdS, favors the separation of charge carriers and forms tandem heterojunctions. The as-prepared photocatalyst has a relative large surface area of ∼877.0 m 2 g −1 and a narrow band gap of ∼1.84 eV, which could absorb visible light efficiently. Furthermore, it exhibits a high photocatalytic hydrogen generation rate which was increased to 2.367 mmol g −1 h −1 and the high photocatalytic degradation efficiency for 2,6-dichlorophen and 2,4,5-trichlorophenol which were 98.6% and 97.5%, respectively. Additionally, recycling text for several cycles indicates the high stability. This novel Ti-MOFs based core@shell hierarchical tandem heterojunctions may offer a new insight for fabricating high-performance heterojunctions for multi-channel charges transfer.

The efficiency and stability of the electrical activation of persulfate (PS) by transition metal-based cathode are controlled by the cycling of Fe(III)/Fe(II) and the mass transfer of PS. In this study, the mixed-valence MOFs catalyst (Fe II -MIL-53(Fe)) modified flow-through cathode was prepared for the first time. Fe II -MIL-53(Fe) was prepared by replacing part of the iron-oxygen network structure in MIL-53(Fe) with Fe(II), resulting in the formation of coordinated unsaturated iron centers (CUICs). The increase of the Fe(III) CUICs facilitated the conversion of Fe(III) to Fe(II). Furthermore, the cycling of Fe(III)/Fe(II) was further promoted by the electric field. Meanwhile, the hydrodynamic behavior of flow-through cathode was indicated by the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. The quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results showed that several reactive specie (SO 4 ·- , ·OH, O 2 ·- and 1 O 2 ) were produce. In summary, this work provided an effective strategy for the efficient and stable electrical activation of PDS.

A bifunctional catalyst with Ce-based metal–organic frameworks deposited on carbon encapsulated Fe 3 O 4 particles (Ce-MOFs/Fe 3 O 4 @C) was prepared for heterogeneous electro-Fenton (EF), which exhibited high H 2 O 2 generation efficiency (over 90% selectivity and 80.7% current efficiency), high sulfamethazine (SMT) removal with very low electric energy consumption (7.65 kWh kg −1 SMT), and wider pH suitability to alkaline environment (pH 9). The highest content of oxygen vacancies (O V ), Ce 3+ and Fe 2+ was simultaneously exhibited when the Fe/Ce ratio in precursor was 2:1. Interface-confined between Ce-MOFs and Fe 3 O 4 @C and presence of O V promoted the O 2 adsorption for oxygen reduction reaction and O 2 ∙- generation, and electron transfer between Fe and Ce. Meanwhile, the presence of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ and Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ simultaneously facilitated the sequential catalysis induced by H 2 O 2 to generate ∙ OH, and Ce 4+ could promote O 2 ∙- to generate 1 O 2 . This work provides new insight into the design and synthesis of Fe-based catalysts in EF with interface confinement and multi-layered reaction centers to improve the generation and the decomposition of H 2 O 2 at the same time at a low cathode potential.

In this work, a superhydrophobic magnetic photothermal flame-retardant polyurethane sponge (AH/Fe-MOF-P@Fe 3 O 4 @PA@PU) with efficient oil–water separation performance was prepared. After coating the polyurethane sponge with a phytic acid (PA) film, the new honeycomb-like “three-in-one” flame-retardant AH/Fe-MOF-P and magnetic nanoparticle Fe 3 O 4 were firmly bound to the sponge by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). AH/Fe-MOF-P@Fe 3 O 4 @PA@PU exhibited excellent superhydrophobicity (with a water contact angle of 155.3°), an oil–water separation efficiency of up to 99%, outstanding recyclability, and environmental stability. Utilizing its magnetic properties, it can be applied to special and complex oil spill treatments. The AH/Fe-MOF-P@Fe 3 O 4 @PA@PU composite exhibited exceptional photothermal properties and demonstrated highly efficient adsorption capabilities for high-viscosity crude oil. Furthermore, the modified sponge possessed remarkable flame-retardant properties, exhibiting the ability to self-extinguish within 2 s following ignition. The superhydrophobic magnetic flame-retardant polyurethane sponge has great potential as an effective oil spill remediation material.

Mix-ligands strategy is highly efficient for the rational construction of MOFs with particular structure motifs and high porosity, yet challenging and requiring matching in hierarchical coordination assembly and synergetic crystallization. The solvothermal reactions of 1,3,5-tris[4-carboxyphenyl]benzene (H 3 btb) and 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (H 2 bdc) with different 3d metal ions , generated highly porous mixed-ligands MOFs of [(CH 3 ) 2 NH 2 ] 2 [Mn 3 (btb) 2 (bdc)]·12DMF·3MeOH ( Mn-btb-bdc ) having anionic 3D frameworks constructed from linear [Mn 3 (COO) 8 ] nodes, [Co 4 (btb) 2 (bdc)(H 2 O) 3 ]·15DMF·7H 2 O ( Co-btb-bdc ) processing neutral frameworks constituted by linear [Co 3 (COO) 6 (H 2 O) 4 ] and paddle-wheel [Co 2 (COO) 4 (H 2 O) 2 ] nodes, as well as one single-ligand MOFs of [(CH 3 ) 2 NH 2 ][Cd(btb)(H 2 O)]·8DMF ( Cd-btb-2fold ) exhibiting 2-fold interpenetrated ths net frameworks due to the unsuccessful introduce of the coexisted bdc ligand. Two new topology net of 2,3,8-connected net with point symbol of (4 2 ·6) 2 (4 4 ·6 6 ·8 12 ·10 5 ·12)(6) and 2,3,4,6-connected net with Point Symbol of (4·8 2 ) 4 (4 2 ·8 11 ·10 2 ) 2 (8 4 ·12 2 )(8 2 ) were found for Mn-btb-bdc and Co-btb-bdc . All these three MOFs are highly porous with void fractions of 60.9%, 52.2% and 61.4%, stemming from 3D-penetrated, 3D-penetrated and 1D channels, respectively. Such structural differentiations are attributed to the diversified electronic structure and coordination preference of different 3d metal ions, as well as the solvent template and temperature effects. Two-steps gate-opening behaviour in gas sorption isotherms was found in the flexible Mn-btb-bdc MOFs.

We used a simple MOFs-assisted synthesis strategy based on the encapsulation and in-situ carburizing reaction of Cu-based metallic organic frameworks (NENU-5) to synthesize porous nano-octahedral materials, MoWN/MoWC@N C Ts (T = 700, 800, and 900). Together with the vapor deposition strategy, the volatile nitrogen species from the pyrolysis of dicyandiamide were captured by the nano-octahedral materials, and formed tungsten-molybdenum-based carbonitride nanocrystals encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon. The porous nano-octahedron has a unique heterostructure composed of Mo 2 N/MoC/W 2 N/WC. The representative MoWN/MoWC@N C 800 showed trifunctional electrocatalytic activity in oxygen reduction reaction/oxygen evolution reaction/hydrogen evolution reaction (ORR/OER/HER) in an alkaline medium (0.1 M KOH). The total oxygen electrode activity index ΔE = 0.795 V (vs. RHE) was found in OER/ORR, and the material also exhibits excellent HER performance. The minimum potential of −0.17 V (vs. RHE) was provided at a current density of −10 mA cm −2 . MoWN/MoWC@N C 800 showed excellent cycle stability and durability in ORR/OER/HER with the same electrolyte (0.1 M KOH). More importantly, MoWN/MoWC@N C 800 could be used to construct high-performance zinc-air batteries and sued for driving electrocatalytic water splitting in a self-powered manner. The successful preparation of the materials indicate that the synthetic strategy provides new reference ideas for developing functional materials with high catalytic properties for various applications.

A comparative study on the ortho-, meta-, and para-substituted pyridyl groups on the functional motifs of zirconium-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) for removing cobalt ions from aqueous solutions was performed. The maximum adsorption capacity of cobalt ions on the ortho-substituted MOF was estimated to be 100.0 mg g–1 at pH 8.0, which was much higher than those of meta- and para-substituted MOFs. The thermodynamic and kinetic experiments showed that the adsorption was a spontaneous, endothermic, and pseudo-second-order process. The modified MOFs were also demonstrated to have the outstanding regenerated ability by the reusability study. The adsorption mechanism probed by density functional theory calculations indicated that the ortho-substituted pyridine Schiff base can take cobalt ions from both [Co(H2O)6]2+ and [Co(CHES)·(H2O)4]+ to form the bidentate complex [CoLP2·(H2O)4]2+, whereas only monodentate complexes could be formed for the other two modified MOFs by substituting one water molecule of [Co·(H2O)6]2+, which were further confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. This work compares the removal performance of Co(II) from aqueous solutions by the ortho-, meta-, and para-substituted pyridine Schiff bases and provides a guiding route to design and synthesize effective functionalized MOFs for the removal of heavy metals and radionuclides.

Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are vital in renewable energy technologies, such as water splitting and fuel cells. Nevertheless, increasing efforts have been paid to develop non-precious metal catalysts as alternatives to noble metal catalysts for HER and ORR. However, how to rationally design and construct an advantageous catalyst is still challenging. Here, a novel cobalt-embedded in nitrogen-doped graphene aerogel (Co–N–GA) catalyst is firstly rationally designed and synthesized by employing a facile strategy of implementing the confined growth of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) within graphene aerogels (GAs). It is worth noting that the Co–N–GA exhibits hierarchical porosity involving micropores, mesopores and macropores, as well as a high surface area (466.6 m2 g−1). More importantly, benefiting from the synergetic effect of hierarchical porosity, high surface area, N-doped carbon and the inner Co metal, the catalyst Co–N–GA displays extraordinarily superior activity for both HER at various pH values and ORR along with better stability. Especially for HER, the onset overpotential, overpotentials@10, 100 mA cm−2 and Tafel slope on the catalyst Co–N–GA in 0.5 M H2SO4 are 0 mV, 46 mV, 183 mV and 33 mV dec−1, respectively. Most importantly, these values are much lower than those of almost all prepared noble-metal-free HER catalysts, indicating the excellent activity for HER of our as-prepared catalyst Co–N–GA. Herein, our strategy opens a new platform to construct a variety of hierarchically porous GA-based catalysts that serve as superior electrocatalysts in energy storage and conversion technologies.
