A comparative structural and combustion study of Al-MO/PVDF (MO=ZnO & ZnFe2O4) thermites synthesised by electrospraying and mechanical mixing

Zhong-xuan Han,Hao Liu,Zhan-jun Yang,Yi-fan Guo,Shu-na Zhao,Mi Li,Lin Jiang,Andrei Rotaru

Aluminised thermites show strong potential for energy-intensive applications, but ensuring stable nanoscale dispersion and optimising combustion performance is challenging. This study prepared Al–MO/PVDF thermites (MO = ZnO, ZnFe₂O₄) by electrospraying and mechanical mixing to compare how particle morphology and compositional uniformity affect reactivity. Electrosprayed samples formed near-spherical, submicron particles with homogeneous distributions of reactants, whereas mechanically mixed samples aggregated into larger, irregular clusters. Differential scanning calorimetry revealed sharper, staged exothermic peaks in the electrosprayed thermites, indicating enhanced reactant contact, while the mechanically mixed thermites produced broad, overlapping exotherms. X-ray diffraction showed partial amorphisation and core-shell formation under rapid solvent evaporation. Laser ignition tests demonstrated faster ignition, higher flame temperatures, and more intense combustion in electrosprayed formulations, particularly Al–ZnFe₂O₄/PVDF, which exhibited a secondary heat release (micro-explosion). Electrospray-assisted fabrication improved homogeneity and promoted rapid, high-temperature reactions for enhanced combustion performance.

Cross-Linked Mixed-Matrix Membranes Incorporating PVDF, Ionic Liquid, and Augmented ZIF-L Embedded Fillers for Efficient CO2/N2 Separation

Mian Zhu,Chao Lyu,Bin Wang,Zhenhui Yu,Jingxian Liu

This study aimed to develop an effective CO2/N2 selective separation membrane for the capture of CO2 from air or flue gas. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) was chosen as the organic substrate for the preparation of mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs). To enhance the CO2 mass transfer rate, an ionic liquid (IL) with high CO2 solubility was introduced through direct material blending, while a leaf-like zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-L) was functionalized with silane coupling agents as the inorganic filler. Subsequently, the prepared PVDF-IL@ZIF MMMs were tested for the CO2 separation performance and mechanical properties. The results revealed that IL loading could significantly enhance the separation performance of MMMs for CO2/N2 separation, and the AZL-incorporated IL loading MMM (PPAZL) exhibited the optimal gas separation performance, with 24.5% CO2/N2 selectivity at 2 bar transmembrane pressure. Notably, AZL also demonstrated superior interfacial compatibility with PVDF compared to both ZIF-8 and pristine ZIF-L, which facilitated the maximization of IL loading in the MMM, achieving more than 10% higher IL capacity than ZIF-8-filled counterparts while stabilizing IL immobilization within the membrane matrix.

Preparation of β-CD/CS blended modified PVDF composite membrane and its separation performance in treating printing and dyeing wastewater

Jiaxuan Wang,Jun Pan,Han Wu

This study aims to develop PVDF composite membranes with excellent comprehensive performance by hydrophilic modification of PVDF membranes. Specifically, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was used as a porogen and dispersing agent, while β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and chitosan (CS) served as hydrophilic modification agents. A novel β-CD/CS/PVDF composite membrane was prepared using a blending phase transformation method. This membrane exhibits excellent hydrophilicity, underwater superoleophobicity, mechanical strength, self-cleaning ability, antibacterial performance, high separation performance, and biocompatibility. The experimental results indicate that the modified membrane with the optimal ratio (MF-β/C-2/3) achieved a pure water flux of 721.79 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , an underwater oil contact angle exceeding 140°. The membrane exhibited exceptional retention and separation capabilities for various concentrations of MB, MG, RB, MO, Pb 2+ , and Cr 6+ . It achieved a separation efficiency exceeding 99% for both oil-water mixtures and oil-water emulsions, and also demonstrated excellent separation performance when treating simulated wastewater containing multiple pollutants. In addition, ten cycles of separation experiments were conducted for organic dyes, heavy metal ions, oil-water mixtures, oil-water emulsions and simulated wastewater respectively. The results showed that after ten cycles of reuse, the modified membrane retained good separation efficiency and water flux, demonstrating exceptional separation stability. Research has shown that PVDF composite membranes have a promising prospect in the treatment of printing and dyeing wastewater. They can simplify the process flow, reduce costs, efficiently intercept pollutants, increase operational stability, and improve treatment efficiency. They have important practical significance in promoting the resource utilization of printing and dyeing wastewater.

Preparation of High-Performance BTO/PVDF Piezoelectric Pressure Sensors Based on Soybean Rhizobacteria Mimicry Using Electrostatic Spinning-Thermal Pressing Method

Limei Zhang,Yi Jiang,Hao Gu,Zhengyang Ji,Junlai Jiang,Yanling Cao,Jinyu Gao,Bo Jiang

As an ideal flexible polymer piezoelectric material, PVDF material has a broad application prospect in pressure sensing, health monitoring, and so forth. However, traditional PVDF-based sensors usually suffer from problems such as low open-circuit voltage and slow deformation recovery. In this paper, inspired by the beaded structure of soybean rhizobial fungus, we used the strategy of combining electrostatic spinning and hot-pressing technology to construct a BTO/PVDF piezoelectric film. Specifically, PVDF is used as the substrate and doped with BTO particles to prepare a beaded internal structure. Then, hot pressing was performed to enhance the β-crystalline phase ratio of PVDF to increase the piezoelectric performance of the device. The sensors prepared by this method possess a high sensitivity of 25.23 mV/kPa in the 0–5 kPa range. The fast response time is 86 ms, and the recovery time is 57 ms, maintaining high cycling stability above 92% under loading and unloading for more than 10,000 cycles. Finite element numerical simulation analysis confirms that the BTO/PVDF piezoelectric thin films prepared by this process have excellent sensing performance. Integrating the device with a data acquisition and processing module can easily detect various life activities of the human body, which has great potential in flexible electronic skin, motion acquisition, and so on.

Development of multifunctional and freestanding PVDF/SMA/CuS membranes with antibacterial, oil-water separation and dye degradation for wastewater treatment

weiwei he,Dan Xu

Industrial wastewater is characterized by the complex coexistence of multiphase contaminants, including waste oil, persistent organic dyes, and other refractory pollutants. The efficient separation and degradation of such wastewater have become the key challenges that urgently need to be broken through in the field of environmental functional materials. In response to this demand, Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/Styrene-co-maleic anhydride (SMA)/Copper sulfide (CuS) composite membranes, integrating antibacterial activity, oil-water separation, and dye degradation functionalities, were fabricated via novel non-solvent induced phase inversion and in-situ deposition techniques. The PVDF/SMA/CuS membranes exhibited a bacteriostatic efficiency of 99%. For oil-water separation, their efficiency for typical oil-in-water emulsions exceeded 98.4%, remaining above 90% after five consecutive recycling cycles, demonstrating excellent operational stability. Under visible light irradiation, the PVDF/SMA/CuS membrane achieved complete degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) and Methyl Orange (MO) solutions within 9 minutes, and Cochineal (Ponceau 4R) solution within 6 minutes, via a photo-Fenton-like reaction. Notably, the membrane retained a dye degradation efficiency above 94% after five cyclic runs, confirming its long-term catalytic durability. As a result, this membrane can treat dye wastewater and oily wastewater efficiently and quickly. This study presents a readily implementable wastewater treatment technology with excellent anti-fouling performance and high efficiency, highlighting its substantial practical application prospects in environmental remediation.

Structural Regulation and Performance Enhancement of PVDF–HFP-Based Quasi-Solid-State Electrolytes via Nano-Barium Titanate Doping and Photocuring

Feng Xiaojun,Pang Dazhi,Yao Mingxuan,Jiang Kunpeng,Zhu Guisheng,Liu Wenping,Zhao Yunyun,Xu Huarui

Safety concerns regarding traditional lithium-ion batteries have garnered widespread attention, and solid-state batteries, with their superior safety and energy density, have emerged as the primary direction for the development of next-generation rechargeable batteries. Among various solid-state electrolytes, PVDF–HFP-based polymer solid-state electrolytes have garnered significant attention owing to their good flexibility, excellent processability, and mechanical strength. However, their low room-temperature ionic conductivity limits their practical application. To address this, this study adopts a composite quasi-solid-state electrolyte approach by introducing nano-BaTiO 3 into the PVDF–HFP-based quasi-solid-state electrolyte system and employs UV light curing technology for rapid fabrication. This approach not only enhances the electrolyte’s ionic conductivity but also strengthens its mechanical strength. Experimental results indicate that the introduced nano-barium titanate may restrict the movement of polymer chains, producing a synergistic effect with the cross-linked network formed by UV curing. This enables the electrolyte to achieve an ionic conductivity of 7.01 × 10 −4  S cm −1 at room temperature. At a current density of 0.2 mA cm −2 , the system can operate stably for 2200 h. At a 0.2 C rate, the battery exhibited a capacity retention of 93.55% after 120 cycles. This study provides a feasible approach for the preparation of safe and highly stable quasi-solid-state electrolytes.

Inkjet printing of dopamine followed by UV light irradiation to modify mussel-inspired PVDF membrane for efficient oil-water separation

Renjie Li,Jinyan Li,Linhua Rao,Hongjun Lin,Liguo Shen,Yanchao Xu,Jianrong Chen,Bao-Qiang Liao

Mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) modification of membrane is an effective alternative for improving permeation flux and anti-fouling performance. Meanwhile, efficient method for oil-water emulsions separation is still highly desired. However, problems, such as time-consuming process and low utilization ratio of expensive raw material, have always been stumbling block to application of this strategy. In this study, inkjet printing of dopamine (DA) followed by UV light irradiation to modify mussel-inspired polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane was proposed. Accordingly, PVDF membrane was inkjet printed by alternately using DA inks and alkaline tris (hydroxymethyl) aminomethane (Tris) ink. The resultant membrane was then subjected to photopolymerization under UV irradiation to form a PDA layer. Successful formation of PDA layer on membrane surface was verified by series of physical and chemical methods . The optimized membrane (DA 80-60 /PVDF) exhibited superior oil/water separation performance with 1.5 times permeate flux higher than that of the pristine PVDF membrane and above 99% oil rejection rate. Meanwhile, the modified membranes showed satisfactory stability in aqueous solution with wide pH range (pH 2.0–7.0). The novel membrane modification method proposed in this study is facile, cost-saving and environment-friendly, serving as a competitive candidate for fabrication of efficient membranes for oil-water emulsion separation.

Ionic-conductive poly (vinylidene fluoride) polymer as a versatile binder to stabilize high-voltage LiCoO2 cathode materials

Wang Yikui,Tao Jianming,Wang Jiangjie,Chen Shaoyang,Yang Yanmin,Lin Yingbin

Serious structural irreversibility and interfacial side reactions pose major challenges for the stable operation of LiCoO 2 cathodes at high voltages. Herein, we report a polymer-based solid electrolyte (SLP) composed succinonitrile, LiTFSI and PVDF as a binder to address these issues. The SLP binder exhibits superior performance compared to traditional PVDF and PVDF binders with LiTFSI, with higher ionic conductivity (8.46 × 10 − 5 S cm − 1 at 30 ℃), lower activation energy of 0.38 eV and excellent adhesion. Even with just 3% SLP binder, LiCoO 2 cathode operating at a cutoff voltage of 4.6 V and loaded with ~ 6.0 mg cm − 2 active material demonstrates improved rate capability at higher compaction densities, delivering a discharge specific capacity of 146.5 mAh g − 1 after 100 cycles at 0.5 C-rate. The SLP binder not only enhances Li + conduction but also facilitates the formation of a stable cathode-electrolyte interphase, thus reducing the Li + diffusion barrier and interface polarization, and enhancing battery’s performance at low temperature. Furthermore, the SPL binder’s high compatibility and elasticity with the electrolyte mitigate irreversible structural changes and volume expansion in LiCoO 2 during cycling, leading to better preservation of the layered structure and lower internal stress for stable cycling under high temperatures. This strategy provides a novel interface protection idea for electroceramic cathode materials and may facilitate commercial development.

Fabrication of hydrophobic ZIFs based composite membrane with high CO2 absorption performance

Xu Li,Qin Yu,Liu Liying,Xiao Juntian,Ding Zhongwei

The membrane contactor has been considered an effective device to capture CO 2 , but its performance is limited by membrane wetting phenomena. In this work, the ZIF-8/ZIF-L (zeolitic imidazolate framework) based composite membrane with excellent hydrophobic stability and CO 2 permeability was successfully fabricated by coating the dense layer on the porous PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) substrate. The dense layer was developed by evenly incorporating ZIF-8 nanocrystals and ZIF-L nanosheets into the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer. The as-prepared membrane possessed competitive hydrophobicity with a water contact angle (WCA) of 131.8°. And after a ten-day immersion test in CO 2 absorbent, the WCA only declined by 9.8%, exhibiting excellent hydrophobic stability. Besides, the CO 2 permeability of the composite membrane was 61.8×10 −8 ·mol·m −2 ·s −1 ·Pa −1 with an ideal CO 2 /N 2 separation factor of ∺20, which was effectively improved in comparison with the control membrane. In the CO 2 absorption experiment, the prepared membrane achieved the competitive CO 2 flux of 3.02×10 −3 ·mol·m −2 ·s −1 when the liquid velocity was 0.25 m·s −1 and displayed robust long-term operating stability. Finally, the AC impedance technique was applied to continuously monitor the wetting state of composite membranes, which further investigated their anti-wetting ability.

Synergistic photo-electro-piezo effects in a polypyrrole/MnO2-PVDF nanofiber membrane for higher energy efficiency of hybrid solar evaporation systems

Muhammad Sultan Irshad,Wancheng Qin,Naila Arshad,Naveed Mushtaq,Muhammad Zeeshan,Xiaochao Fan,Tianxiang Zhou,Yi E,Irshad Hussain,Tao Mei,Yajun Qi,Van-Duong Dao,Nang Xuan Ho,Xianbao Wang

Energy harvesting technologies are gaining attention because of their potential to generate power from ambient sources like light and mechanical motion. The development of advanced electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) flexible films with dual functionality (photothermal-piezoelectric effect) has become a prominent area of research, focusing on optimizing their hydrophilicity. Herein, electrospun MnO 2 nanosheets/PVDF flexible films are sequentially fabricated to transform the dielectric and ferroelectric properties, which result in an open-circuit voltage of 20 V and a short-circuit current of 0.10 μA under repeated mechanical force of 10 N at 2 Hz. Wearable films demonstrated the ability to harvest the biomechanical energy of human movements, such as finger and joint tapping, as well as wearable shoe soles that harvest energy from walking and running. More importantly, the impregnation of polypyrrole over MnO 2 /PVDF films (MnPVDF@PPy) and post-hydrophilic modification achieved an enhanced evaporation rate of 1.85 kg m −2 h −1 and waste heat recovery into open-circuit voltage of 135 mV and a short-circuit current of 33 mA under one sun irradiation. The unique interplay between photo-piezo-electro mechanisms ensures efficient energy flow, robustness, and adaptability in dynamic environments by addressing critical challenges such as water scarcity and intelligent sensing with a single, multifunctional platform.

Porous Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3@PMMA/PVDF-HFP composite solid electrolyte with tunable PMMA ratio: Constructing efficient ion channels and stable interface

Xinze Wu,Hu Wang,Jiangchao Chen,Pengfei Pang,Haiping Li,Kunpeng Jiang,Yunyun Zhao,Wenping Liu,Guisheng Zhu,Huarui Xu

Dendrite growth and interfacial instability in conventional liquid electrolytes limit the practical application of lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Composite solid electrolytes (CSEs) offer a promising alternative, yet challenges remain in achieving high ionic conductivity and low interfacial resistance. In this study, a series of sponge-like porous Li 1.3 Al 0.3 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 @PMMA/PVDF-HFP CSE membranes (LPPH1:x) were fabricated via phase separation-solution casting. A multistage ion transport channel was constructed through the synergistic combination of the polymer matrix, inorganic fillers, and liquid electrolytes. The incorporation of PMMA suppressed the crystallization of PVDF-HFP, while the ester groups in PMMA facilitated Li salt dissociation through coordination with Li + . LPPH1:3 exhibited optimal comprehensive performance: a high ionic conductivity of 2.75 × 10 −3  S·cm −1 at room temperature, a Li + transference number of 0.62, and an electrochemical stability window of 4.9 V. Moreover, the symmetric cell demonstrated stable cycling for over 2000 h at 0.2 mA·cm −2 . The LiFePO 4 full cell retained 96.4% capacity after 200 cycles at 0.5C. Post-cycling characterization confirmed that LPPH1:3 suppressed lithium dendrite growth and maintained a stable interfacial structure. This work provides an innovative material design strategy and theoretical foundation for developing high-performance solid-state LMBs.

Simultaneous improvement in dielectric constant and breakdown strength of PVDF composites containing BaTiO3@Ag nanofillers towards high-performance energy storage dielectrics

Yue Zhao,Zhaotian Ba,Yu Long,Yuanyi Kang,Tao Zhang,Meng Xin,Guohua Fan,Chuncheng Hao

The performance contradiction between dielectric constant and breakdown strength restricted the significant improvement in energy storage density of common dielectrics. In this work, the ternary BaTiO 3 @Ag/PVDF composites were prepared, in which the fibrous BaTiO 3 fillers were prepared by electrospinning and further modified with silver (Ag) nanoparticles via silver mirror reaction. Dielectric performance of the composites was effectively improved by the hybrid fillers owing to the synergies of the increased polarizations and the Coulomb blockade effect. Dielectric constant and breakdown strength of the composites with only 0.2 wt% filling content reached 14.8 and 421.7 MV/m, which were respectively increased 124.4% and 135.9% compared to that of the pristine PVDF. And the maximum energy storage density was increased to 4.5 J/cm 3 with the ultra-low content of fillers. This work broke the inherent contradictions in single-layer composites and provided novel attempts for dielectric modulation of dielectrics.
