Shape-controlled synthesis of Cu-Ni nanocrystals

Dongfang Wu,Qingqing Tan,Lichong Hu

A highly selective morphology formation of Cu-Ni bimetallic nanocrystals is developed with a solvothermal method, using poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) as capping agent and aniline as reducing agent in benzyl alcohol. It is shown that temperature is crucial to the controlled synthesis of nanocrystals, and that Cu-Ni nanoparticles evolve from hexagonal nanoplates to nanowires with increasing the concentration of pyrrolidone unit. The synthetic Cu-Ni hexagonal nanoplates and nanowires are well dispersed and have high crystallinity , purity, uniformity of shape and size, and face-centered cubic lattice structure. Furthermore, a mechanism of the formation of Cu-Ni nanocrystals is proposed, and the functions of capping agent, reducing agent, solvent, etc. are discussed. It is also found that both nanoplates and nanowires show better catalytic activities in o -xylene combustion than the conventional catalyst. Especially, the Cu-Ni nanowire catalyst exhibits the most excellent catalytic performance due to the formation of durian-like surface structure.

Coupling Photothermal Effect into Efficient Photocatalytic H2 Production by Using a Plate-like Cu@Ni Core-shell Cocatalyst

Xinyang Guo,Fei Xue,Shikai Xu,Shaohua Shen,Hongwen Huang,Maochang Liu

Graphical How do you wave ? In this work, we realized the coupling of localized photothermal effect into a cocatalytic material by developing a unique core-shell Cu@Ni nanoplate cocatalyst for efficient photocatalytic H 2 production from water. Specifically, Cu nanoplate could induce localized hot spots on Ni nanoparticles via a visible-light-driven surface plasma resonance effect. As a result, photogenerated electrons transferred from g-C 3 N 4 to Ni, could be elevated to a more energetic state, leading to a substantially improved photocatalytic activity. The general moderate reaction condition in solar photocatalytic hydrogen production (i. e., near ambient pressure, room temperature) makes interfacial mass and energy transfer extremely slow, even by employing a cocatalytic material (usually in the form of noble metal nanoparticles or their counterparts). Herein, by fabricating well-defined Cu@Ni core-shell nanoplate cocatalyst and further incorporating it with a g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst, we demonstrate that interfacial processes could be significantly improved by coupling localized photothermal effect into a cocatalyst. Specifically, Cu nanoplate can induce localized strong hot spots on Ni nanoparticles via a visible-light-driven surface plasma resonance effect. As a result, photogenerated electrons transferred from g-C 3 N 4 to Ni, could be elevated to a more energetic state, leading to a substantially improved photocatalytic activity toward H 2 evolution from water. The highest hydrogen generation rate reaches 55 μmol h −1 g −1 , 110 times of that pristine g-C 3 N 4 . This work indicates that photoelectric and photothermal effects can be effectively coupled by integrating metal hetero-nanoparticles.

Novel porous nitrogen-doped carbon composite with CNTs/Cu-Ni as high-performance supercapacitor electrode

Xuesong Shan,Keru Song,Siyu Huang,Jianwen Wang,Fengyue Shi,Dongyu Zhao

The annealing approach is usually used to synthesize carbon-based materials. We use polystyrene (PS) microspheres as a template to composite with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) loaded by Cu-Ni ions. After One-step high-temperature treatment, the PS microspheres disappear, and the composite materials become a three-dimensional porous structure. At the meantime, the Cu-Ni ions are reduced and attached to the material (CNTs/Cu-Ni/CP (CMP)). Then, the CMP material is coated with Polyaniline (PANI). The two-step high-temperature treatment accomplishes the Nitrogen-doped process of the material (CNTs/Cu-Ni/CP@CPANI (CMPN)). Electrochemical analysis indicates that materials have a high specific capacitance value (356F/g at 0.5 A/g). After 10,000 cycles of charging and discharging, the capacitance retention rate is 92.57 %. The assembled symmetrical supercapacitor possesses outstanding energy and power density (11.92 Wh kg −1 at 700.73 W kg −1 ).

Degradation of phenol by Cu-Ni bimetallic-doped sludge biochar as a fenton-like catalyst: Mechanistic study and practical application

Zhe Liu,Qi Liu,Xuhua Zhang,BingRui Shi,Dandan Qin,Jiaxuan Wang,Aining Zhang,Yongjun Liu

In this study, the sewage sludge was converted into sludge biochar (SBC) and doped with Cu-Ni bimetal to synthesize a novel composite catalyst (Cu-Ni@SBC) for the activation of H 2 O 2 for phenol degradation. Characterization results showed that the Cu-Ni bimetal was successfully doped into the SBC and led to the formation of a porous structure with abundant cavities, resulting in a larger specific surface area and higher adsorbed oxygen content. Mechanism analysis revealed a valence state conversion cycle between Cu 0 -Cu(II), Ni(III)-Ni(II) and Cu-Ni which made Cu-Ni@SBC have higher electron transfer performance. Response surface methodology was applied to determine the optimal preparation and reaction conditions, under which the Fenton-like system composed of Cu-Ni@SBC and H 2 O 2 removed 100 % of phenol and mineralized 69.1 % of TOC from simulated wastewater. In addition, the experimental results showed that the Cu-Ni@SBC material had a relatively wide pH adaptation range (4–8), and the removal efficiency of phenol could reach 76.4 % after 5 cycles of experiments, and the catalytic inhibition rates of the two common coexisting anions, HCO 3 – and Cl - , were 17.1 % and 0 %, respectively. The results of practical application revealed that the phenol removal efficiency reached 90.44 % and the pollutant mineralization rate could reach 58.5 % within 90 min, which proved that the catalyst was suitable for the advanced degradation of organic matter in coal chemical wastewater. Therefore, Cu-Ni@SBC can be considered as a promising Fenton-like catalyst, and the process method is also of some guiding significance for the treatment of coal chemical wastewater.

L-Lysine derived fabrication of Cu@Ni core–satellite nanoassemblies as efficient non-Pt catalysts for the methanol oxidation reaction

Anzhou Yang,Qiuzi Huang,Ziqi Wei,Zehan Yu,Meifeng Cui,Wu Lei,Yawen Tang,Xiaoyu Qiu

Designing cost-effective, highly active, and durable noble-metal-free electrocatalysts as alternative electrode materials for the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) is of significant importance for practical applications. Herein, we report a facile one-pot synthetic route to construct Cu@Ni core–satellite nanoassemblies (CS-NAs) with the assistance of eco-friendly L-lysine, which involves the spontaneous process of preferential formation of the Cu core followed by self-assembly growth of Ni satellites. The selection of the Cu core is beneficial for enhancing the charge transfer and tuning the electronic structure of Ni satellites, as well as serving as a self-skeleton to enhance the structural stability for catalysis. Meanwhile, the tiny Ni satellites could be fully exposed, which not only produce a larger number of valid active sites, but also provide a short electron and ion transport distance. As a result, the Cu@Ni CS-NAs are qualified as superior and durable electrocatalysts for the MOR, affording 29.6 mA cm−2 at 1.6 V with long-term chronoamperometric stability.

A multifunctional core–shell nanoreactor with unique features of sintering resistance for high-performance ethanol steam reforming reaction

Rong Dai,Ziliang Zheng,Kai Shi,Xu Wu,Xia An,Xianmei Xie

Ethanol steam reforming (ESR) has drawn great attention for sustainable H 2 production. Design active and sinter resistant nanocatalysts are critical issues for ESR reaction. Herein, a core–shell structured Pt-Cu@Ni-SiO 2 nanocomposite for ESR reaction has been synthesized via a one-pot facile encapsulation strategy, which is featured by highly active and sintering resistance for ESR reaction. Structural and morphological characterizations revealed that each Pt-Cu@Ni-SiO 2 nanocomposite contained a 3 nm Pt-Cu core and multiple Ni nanoparticles with diameters of around 3 nm anchored on the SiO 2 shell. The Pt-Cu@Ni-SiO 2 nanoreactor exhibited higher ethanol conversion (99.99%) and H 2 selectivity (70.32%) and an excellent stability with no loss of activity after 50 h of reaction at 450 °C. The advantages were originated from the ultra-small size of metal nanoparticles and the unique core–shell structure provides a great opportunity to give full play to the catalytic activity of active sites thus guaranteed excellent catalytic activity. Compared with the supported Pt-Cu@Ni-SiO 2 catalyst, the Pt-Cu@Ni-SiO 2 nanoreactor exhibit good stability and sintering resistance due to the encapsulation of the metal nanoparticles and the enhanced metal-support interaction. Thus, it is supposed that this type of catalyst opens a new strategy for the design of the ESR catalyst.

Fabrication of Cu-Ni Alloy Microcomponents using Localized Electrochemical Deposition

Wenzheng Wu,Xiaojie Tang,Jing Wang,Chenghan Zhao

With the rapid development of electronics, additive manufacturing of complex three-dimensional microscale metal and alloy structures has emerged as one of the future directions for advanced technologies. In this study, a localized electrochemical deposition technique was developed which enables the fabrication of microscale three-dimensional metal structures in an ambient environment. Notably, we investigated the effects of voltage, initial electrode gap, and electrolyte composition on the deposition of Cu-Ni alloy. Furthermore, we successfully fabricated Cu-Ni equiatomic micro-columns, providing possibilities for the micro/nanoscale fabrication of commercial K-Monel copper. Finally, based on these foundations, we successfully shaped overhanging structures with various angles as well as an "H" structure using a rotating cathode substrate, demonstrating their potential in the fabrication of Cu-Ni alloy micro components.

Printed Flexible Heaters-Based Thermotherapy Platform for Multiduty Thermal Management

Qun Liu,Bin Tian,Chengsheng Luo,Jing Liang,Wei Wu

Printed flexible heaters (FHs) with excellent heating performance and thermal stability are quite desirable for the development of portable thermotherapy platform. Herein, the facile screen-printing technology is used to fabricate the highly oxidation-resistant Cu @ Ni rose-stem nanowires (RSNWs) - based low-cost scalable FHs. The Cu @ Ni RSNWs possess low sheet resistance of 1.9 Ω sq −1 after low temperature sintering (90 °C). The FHs not only exhibit great oxidation resistance (almost no change at 180 °C for 30 min), but also maintain the great conductivity (Δ R / R 0 < 0.3) even after being exposed to ambient atmosphere for 60 days. Furthermore, the FHs exhibit great heating performance with the saturation temperature of 172.8 °C under 6 V, and can keep stable heating cycles for 5500 s under both parameters of the stepwise-rising voltage from 2 to 6 V and consistent load-on voltage of 6 V. In addition, the heaters array can greatly shorten the time of raising the temperature of the blood bag from 5 to 20 °C. The outstanding heating performance of the FHs provides great chances for portable variable-area flexible heating platform in the field of multiduty thermal management.

Efficient Cu–Ni/W20O58 Catalysts for Hydrogenation of Nitriles to Secondary Amines

Jia-qi Bai,Mei Ma,Huangfei Liu,Zhangkai Qian,Durui Liu,Yuncai Zhao,Yijing Gao,Jingshuai Chen,Mengdie Cai,Song Sun

The hydrogenation of nitriles is an environmentally friendly and atom-economical route to prepare high-value amines; however, it is still a challenge to control selectivity because of the occurrence of hydrogenation, self-coupling, and hydrogenolysis reactions during the hydrogenation process. It is highly desirable to develop efficient non-noble-metal catalysts for the hydrogenation of nitriles to secondary amines, although several noble metal catalysts have been reported. Herein, we successfully prepared a Cu–Ni/W20O58 catalyst and found that the Cu4.4–Ni0.6/W20O58 catalyst showed a 92.3% yield with initial TOFs of 270.0 h–1 at 373 K and 3 MPa H2 for the hydrogenation of benzonitrile (BN) to dibenzylamine (DBA), which was much superior to that of the monometallic Cu4.4/W20O58 and Ni0.6/W20O58 catalysts. Moreover, the Cu4.4–Ni0.6/W20O58 catalyst could be reused at least 4 times and was effective for the hydrogenation of various nitriles with superior selectivity to secondary amines. Furthermore, the reaction mechanism of BN hydrogenation for the Cu–Ni alloy of Cu4.4–Ni0.6/W20O58 was proposed on the basis of spectroscopic studies such as XRD, TPR, TEM, XAFS, and XPS, kinetic studies such as the effect of BN concentration and H2 pressure, the isotopic effect of hydrogen, and the effect of the reaction temperature and DFT calculations. The rate-determining step was the hydrogenation of benzylidenamine (BI) to the half-hydrogenated intermediate by one H atom over the Cu4.4–Ni0.6/W20O58 catalyst. The Ni–W20O58 interface was responsible for the adsorption and activation of BN, and the electron-rich Cu acted as the site for H2 dissociation; the synergistic effect of Cu and Ni led to the superior catalytic performance of the Cu4.4–Ni0.6/W20O58 catalyst.

Catalytic refining lignin into toluene over atomically dispersed Cu/Ni dual sites

Zhao Xin,Li Changzhi,Wen Jie,Qiang Qian,Shen Zirong,Yu Haipeng,Zhou Xin,Yue Fengxia,Fang Ruiqi,Li Yingwei,Zhang Tao

Lignin refining still suffers from great challenges of selective depolymerization and cleavage of stubborn C‒C linkages. Here, a robust atomically dispersed Cu/Ni-SA@HNC catalyst is fabricated for super-selective hydrogenolysis of lignin and model compounds via an unusual “preferential C α –C β bond cleavage in β-O-4 linkages” pathway, affording toluene in yield up to 75.7% from β-O-4 model compounds, and up to 33.7 ± 1.6 wt% (nine parallel experiments) from poplar lignin. The catalyst exhibits high stability, and the scale-up potential is demonstrated by the high space-time yield of toluene (33.7 g·g cat −1 ·h −1 ) in continuous flow reaction of β-O-4 model compound. The origin of the extraordinary selectivity towards C α –C β bond cleavage rather than C‒O bond cleavage in β-O-4 model compounds is uncovered. This work conquers the major challenges in lignin valorization by using non-noble dual-metal single-atom catalyst, not only showcasing the application perspective of atomically dispersed catalysts in biopolymer refinery, but also providing a cost-efficient, petroleum independent solution to valuable commodity chemicals.

Zhiqiang Xu,Xianhua He,Mingwei Liang,Lijuan Sun,Di Li,Kenan Xie,Li Liao

Catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) over high-performance non-noble metal catalysts is attracting intensive attention. Herein, we report a graphene supported Cu@Ni bimetallic nanowires catalyst by a facile liquid phase reduction method with the assistance of an external magnetic field. The morphology and structure of the composite are studied by SEM, TEM and XPS. The vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) is used to analyze its magnetic properties . Owing to the synergistic effect of graphene and bimetallic nanowires, the catalyst shows superior catalytic performance and excellent stability. The results of catalysis exhibit an extraordinary rate constant (1.16 min −1 ) and activity factor (5.81 min −1  mg −1 ) at room temperature, which are much higher than a majority of non-noble metal catalysts, even noble metal catalysts. Also, compared with noble metal catalyst, the novel catalyst possesses ferromagnetism , which facilitates the separation of catalyst and reaction system, and guarantees recyclability. Moreover, a possible synergistic catalytic mechanism based on the fact that electron transfer between copper-nickel nanowires and graphene has been proposed. It is believed that the novel catalyst has a great importance for the application of nanowires in the field of catalysis.

Cu@Ni/MoO3 core-shell catalyst for high efficiency methanolysis of hydrazine borane

Yunfeng Lei,Huilin Liu,Shunxiang Wang,Fu Ze Ho,Wen Da Oh,Yong Foo Wong,Yongjin Zou,Yong Shen Chua

Hydrazine borane (N 2 H 4 BH 3 ) has been recognized as an attractive hydrogen storage material owing to its high hydrogen capacity of 15.4 wt%. However, the methanolysis of N 2 H 4 BH 3 remains a challenge, as only BH 3 moiety of N 2 H 4 BH 3 can be utilized to produce H 2 . In the present work, we reported an efficient Cu@Ni/MoO 3 core–shell catalyst that is capable of fully utilizing the H atoms on both BH 3 and N 2 H 4 moieties of N 2 H 4 BH 3 via methanolysis, releasing 5.5 equivalents of gas at 50 °C. This study represents the most efficient catalyst for methanolysis of N 2 H 4 BH 3 reported to date. The improved catalytic activity of Cu@Ni/MoO 3 catalyst may be attributed to the collective improvement on the catalyst, which includes increased specific surface area of the catalyst, formation of an electron deficient Cu@Ni catalyst surface induced by MoO 3 and favorable reacting environment involving KOH as a catalyst promoter. The development of low-cost and highly efficient catalysts may encourage the application of N 2 H 4 BH 3 as a promising hydrogen storage material.
