Human prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA), a tumor marker in prostate cancer encoded by the FOLH1 gene, is a type II transmembrane zinc metallopeptidase that is most highly expressed in the nervous system, prostate, kidney, and small intestine. The enzyme is also known as glutamate carboxypeptidase II (GCPII), folate hydrolase 1, folypoly-gamma-glutamate carboxypeptidase (FGCP), and N-acetylated-alpha-linked acidic dipeptidase I (NAALADase I). In the brain, PSMA hydrolyzes the neurotransmitter N-acetyl-Asp-Glu to produce glutamate, another neurotransmitter. Inhibition of brain PSMA activity is considered to be a promising approach for the treatment of neurological disorders associated with glutamate excitotoxicity, such as stroke, chronic pain, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Intestinal PSMA hydrolyzes folylpoly-gamma -glutamates, facilitating the uptake of folate.
Post-translational: The first two amino acids at the N-terminus of isoform PSMA' appear to be cleaved by limited proteolysis. The N-terminus is blocked.

Recombinant Human PSMA/FOLH1 Protein (rp176298) - ELISA Immobilized Recombinant Human PSMA/FOLH1 Protein (rp176298) at 1.0 μg/mL can bind Recombinant PSMA Antibody (Ab123637) with the EC₅₀ of 7.9 ng/mL.
Recombinant Human PSMA/FOLH1 Protein (rp176298) - SDS-PAGE 3 μg/lane of Recombinant Human PSMA/FOLH1 Protein was resolved with SDS-PAGE under reducing (R) and non-reducing (N) conditions and visualized by Coomassie® Blue staining, showing a band at 91.7 kDa under reducing conditions and 90.8 & 107.6 kDa under non-reducing conditions. PSMA/FOLH1 contains multiple glycosylation sites, and the heterogeneity of glycosylation modifications may result in the protein exhibiting multiple closely migrating bands on a gel (Uniprot: Q04609).
