Single-mode personal thermal-moisture management fabrics cannot ensure the comfort and safety of the human body in high-temperature, high-humidity, and complex environments. Here, a tri-cooling cotton fabric (TCCF) that combines evaporation, convection, and heat storage with a converging pore array, Janus wetting structure and phase change microcapsule is demonstrated. Benefiting from its Janus wetting structure and converging pore array, the TCCF exhibits excellent unidirectional sweat-wicking performance (717 unidirectional transfer index) and rapid water vapor transmission (223.0 g/m 2 /h). The TCCF can lower the temperature by 4.5 °C through evaporation and convection compared with conventional cotton. Furthermore, the TCCF demonstrates excellent buffering capacity for sudden temperature changes. Evaporation, convection, and heat storage help cool the human body in complex environments.

We propose a moisture absorption and evaporation-enabled electricity generator (MAEG) inspired by the transpiration process of trees. The absorption layer of the MAEG is composed of a PSS@PVA hydrogel and a cotton fabric impregnated with lithium chloride (cotton@LiCl) to improve moisture absorption. The evaporation layer of the MAEG comprises a unidirectional moisture conduction Janus nanofiber membrane (UMCJ) that enhances water transportation and evaporation. Under ambient conditions, a single MAEG generates an open-circuit voltage ( V oc ) of 0.74 V and a short-circuit current ( I sc ) of 621.64 μA, maintaining a V oc of 0.75 V and an I sc of 61.54 μA after 50 days. The output performance of the MAEG exhibits minimal variation when bent from 0 to 180 o . A maximum power density of 18.72 μW/cm 2 is achieved with an external of 910 Ω. The scalability of the MAEG is impressive, with a series connection of 70 MAEGs yielding a V o c of 48.80 V, while a parallel connection of 70 units achieves an I sc of 45.77 mA. Notably, a series connection of three MAEGs can power an LED for over 5 days. Additionally, an array of 5 × 20, totaling 100 MAEGs, can directly charge a mobile phone without rectifier circuits or capacitors.

Silk fabric (SF) is a high-end textile frequently utilized in summer apparel. However, its ultraviolet absorption reduces the solar energy reflection, and the inherent hydrophilicity impedes effective sweat evaporation, thereby significantly compromising thermal-moisture comfort. Herein, we fabricated a multifunctional Janus SF with rapid heat dissipation, unidirectional moisture conduction and radiative cooling capabilities through a feasible two-step process. Briefly, hydrophilic Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles were covalently anchored on the outer side (A-side) of Janus SF, whereas a hydrophobic boron nitride (BN) nanosheet-doped layer was fabricated on the inner side (B-side) via polycondensation reaction. The optimized Janus SF demonstrated exceptional solar reflectivity (93.62 %) and infrared emissivity (92.08 %), alongside enhanced thermal conductivities (1.45 W/K/m in-plane and 0.182 W/K/m through-plane). Additionally, the wettability gradient between the hydrophilic A-side and hydrophobic B-side provided a robust driving force for moisture transport, endowing Janus SF with a distinguished unidirectional transportation index of 809.43 % and a satisfactory water evaporation rate of 88.49 g/(m 2 ·h), thereby ensuring prolonged thermal-moisture comfort. Notably, this Janus fabric displayed remarkable outdoor practical cooling effect (∼5.6 °C) compared to bare skin, accompanying with good biocompatibility and outstanding wearability. Overall, such durable, scalable and multifunctional Janus SF provides innovative inspiration for designing next-generation passive cooling fabrics.

Managing wound exudate, alleviating wound inflammation, and monitoring the healing process are the current focus of wound dressing research. However, the preparation of multifunctional dressings that simultaneously perform these functions remains a challenge. In this study, a pH-responsive Janus composite membrane with unidirectional moisture drainage and antioxidant properties is proposed for the wound healing process. This Janus composite membrane takes advantage of the difference in wettability between the hydrophilic polyacrylonitrile (PAN) layer and the hydrophobic polylactic acid (PLA) layer, which allows the fluid to be exported within 3 s and reduces the adhesion to the wound site. When the fibrous membrane was wetted, curcumin encapsulated in the fibers could be effectively released with a high antioxidant activity of 86.82 %. In response to pH changes during the wound healing process, the Janus composite membrane displays different colors under different conditions, which can be used to monitor wound healing. In addition, the biocompatibility of this Janus composite membrane increases the potential for its clinical use as a multifunctional wound dressing.

In cold climates, maintaining body temperature with conventional fabrics becomes increasingly challenging, while the negative impact of heavy clothing on outdoor work is becoming more pronounced, prompting the development of new lightweight insulating fabrics. Herein, a bilayer fabric MnOOH-NPs/polydopamine/cotton-Maillard reaction zein (MPC-MRZ) with reinforced full-spectrum sunlight absorption and asymmetric wettability is reported. With a thickness similar to cotton, MPC-MRZ exhibits superior insulation, unidirectional sweat transport, and UV resistance without relying on external energy. Both lab and outdoor tests demonstrate exceptional sensitivity and rapid photothermal conversion (∼83.7 % sunlight absorption), resulting in a notable 10.15 °C temperature compared with cotton. The Maillard reaction-induced cross-linking significantly boosts MRZ side hydrophobicity to 119.3°, leading to substantial asymmetric wetting (0° on MPC side) at heterogeneous interfaces. This enables rapid transportation of sweat to the external environment (3.83 s) without reverse penetration, and in conjunction with photothermal conversion, maintains surface dryness and wet comfort for sustained thermal insulation. Overall, this work aims at the comfort of human body, effectively combines thermal insulation and humidity control, which has a good application prospect in plateau areas.

Fabric-based wearable devices have gained significant attention as next-generation flexible electronics. However, traditional fabric sensors are limited by their dense woven structures, which hinder moisture-wicking and self-powered applications. There is an urgent need to develop more portable fabric sensors that combine efficient moisture-wicking with versatile sensing capabilities. In this work, a Janus-structured fabric sensor integrating moisture-wicking (unidirectional wetting) characteristics, superior ionic thermoelectric (i-TE) properties and strain sensing capabilities was developed. The Janus fabric sensor was fabricated through a two-step sequential modification process. First, a layer of conductive polypyrrole (PPy) was synthesized directly on the fabric surface through in situ polymerization. Second, asymmetric surface modification was achieved: an i-TE gel was spray-coated onto one side of the fabric, while 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate and poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate were applied to the opposite side to create a hydrophilic surface. The i-TE gel was prepared by incorporating 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide into fluorine-modified polyurethane. The Janus fabric sensor, with its asymmetric architecture, achieved effective moisture-wicking and liquid transport against gravity within 2 s. It exhibited sensitive motion-sensing performance with a gauge factor of 9.37 while simultaneously showing outstanding thermoelectric properties, characterized by a Seebeck coefficient of 4.84 mV K−1 and a power factor of 32.8 μW mK−2. These attributes enabled the monitoring of different human activity stages in a wearable self-powered mode. More significantly, the sensor's rapid response time of 0.2 s to flame exposure enabled common household textiles to serve as fire-warning systems. It holds a great promise as a platform for next-generation smart textiles.

Excessive energy consumption, especially space heating and cooling, is one of the major challenges facing mankind. Smart heat-moisture management textiles can effectively regulate heat-moisture comfort between the environment and skin, greatly reducing energy consumption; these results are in line with sustainable development goals. In this work, a skin-inspired adaptive heat-regulating fabric based on heat-responsive shape-memory ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer fibres and traditional cotton fabric is used. Furthermore, single-sided hydrophobic finishing is introduced to provide the fabric with unidirectional moisture transport. Owing to the shape memory effect, the smart fabric has an environment-adaptive and responsive dynamic structure in the form of a heat-induced gap opening and cool-induced gap closing. As a result, the heat conductivity of the smart textile can be switched from 0.086 to 0.089 W/m·K. Moreover, the air permeability and moisture evaporation can be regulated between 443.5 mm/s, 1761.81 g/(d·m 2 ) and 461.7 mm/s, 1963.8 g/(d·m 2 ), reversibly and repeatedly; the unidirectional moisture transport capacity with a unidirectional moisture index of 193.2 can also be regulated to synergistically improve the heat-moisture comfort, and the entire process results in zero carbon emission. Moreover, we demonstrate the application of the smart adaptive fabric in heat-moisture management fields, attaining a cooling effect of 4.35 °C and a breathability difference of 89.6 mm/s; these values correspond to more than 30% building cooling and heating energy savings, and these results are in line with the sustainable and zero-carbon trends. The shape memory adaptive heat-moisture management fabric will likely have broad prospects in smart thermoregulation textiles, wearable fields, electronic skin, outdoor, medical, military, and energy-saving fields. Moisture management materials, which can remove liquid unidirectionally, have excellent potential for long-term healthcare of bedridden patients because they can handle large amounts of body fluids caused by incontinence, sweating, etc. However, their lack of support, thermal management, and antibacterial properties limits their clinical application. Here, a three-dimensional thermoplastic polyurethane/warp-knitted spacer fabric/viscose fabric (TWVF) was designed and prepared by coating and needle-punching. TWVF had asymmetrical wettability and interpenetrating fiber pin arrays, which could quickly and unidirectionally drain body fluid away from the skin to keep the skin dry and clean. Meanwhile, the low thermal conductivity of TWVF prevented excessive cooling caused by heat loss of liquid transfer (body temperature was 4.7 °C higher than that with cotton textiles). TWVF exhibited excellent permeability, a low compression modulus (0.03 MPa), and a high compression strength (0.15 MPa), providing sufficient air exchange and suitable support for the body and reducing the risk of pressure injury. Moreover, the incorporated aloin endowed TWVF with excellent antibacterial rates against Staphylococcus aureus (99.61%) and Escherichia coli (98.16%), respectively. This multifunctional textile is simple to prepare and easy to industrialize, providing a reference for the development of functional healthcare materials.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is of great importance to protect people from respiratory pollutants such as fine dust and pathogenic microorganisms. Besides, the accumulated water vapor caused by breathing during long-term wearing PPE would bring discomfort to people. Herein, an antimicrobial polyurethane/polyacrylonitrile (PU/PAN) Janus membrane with unidirectional moisture management properties was fabricated using layer-by-layer electrospinning technology. As expected, unidirectional moisture transfer was achieved within 28 s, and the excellent filter efficiency of 99.20% against PM 1.0 and the bacteria retention capacity of 100% effectively purify the flowing air. In addition, the secondary infection can be avoided since the antimicrobial quaternary ammonium unit was chemically anchored to the Janus membrane. Therefore, the present PU/PAN Janus electrospun membrane as the part of PPE is supposed to improve the wearing comfort and meet the requirements of preventing contamination by bacteria, aerosols and other pollutants in air.

A superhydrophobic cotton fabric with unidirectional moisture transfer ability, antibacterial, and oil-water separation capabilities was fabricated by combining a simple coating method and oxygen plasma etching. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was employed to impart low surface energy to the cotton fabric, thereby endowing it with hydrophobic characteristics. The synthesized quaternized chitosan/TiO 2 /Ag (CTA) compound was subsequently applied onto the cotton fabric surface to introduce a desirable level of surface roughness, thus enhancing its hydrophobic properties and conferring excellent antibacterial efficacy. The cotton was subsequently treated by oxygen plasma to trigger asymmetrical wetting on both sides. The experimental findings reveal that the optimally treated cotton fabric exhibits hydrophobic properties on the bottom surface, with a water contact angle (WCA) reaching 162.8°, while the upper surface displays hydrophilic behavior, establishing a wetting gradient along the thickness direction. Notably, even under the influence of reverse gravity, water droplets are capable of transferring from the back to the top surface within 2 s, while preventing reverse penetration of liquid. Moreover, the synthesized compound CTA endows the cotton fabric with efficient and long-lasting antibacterial properties through two modes (contact and release sterilization modes) and three sterilization mechanisms (electrostatic interaction, plasma surface resonance effect, and reactive oxygen species). Remarkably, within a time frame of only 1 h, the modified cotton fabric is able to achieve a kill rate exceeding 99% against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus . Moreover, the aforementioned properties demonstrate outstanding durability against repeated washing, continuous abrasion, exposure to strong acid/base, and ultraviolet radiation. Additionally, this modified cotton fabric exhibits remarkable efficiency in terms of oil-water separation, effectively separating both light and heavy oil from water. It is worth noting that the preparation process is cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and free from fluorine.

Multifunctional knitted fabrics with Janus structure have been widely used for smart wearable textiles in the personal thermal management. Nevertheless, the existing intelligent textiles often lack efficient sweat management capacity and thermal comfort under many practical conditions. Herein, a Janus composite fabric (JPF) based on paper-yarn fabric was proposed, which integrated radiative cooling effects with unidirectional moisture-wicking performance through a combination of electrospinning and spray coating, utilizing cellulose-based materials and inorganic particles. The results showed that the JPF exhibited good solar reflectance at 88.6 %, and infrared emissivity at 94.7 %, and it confers excellent moisture-wicking and antigravity water transfer properties, water vapor transmission rate of 192 g −2 h −1 , water contact angle shifted to 0° within 2 s. Besides, the outdoor experiment reveals that the JPF have outstanding cooling properties, its temperature has dropped by 9.2 °C compared to ambient temperature. In addition, the tensile strength of the JPF compared with original paper-yarn fabric has been enhanced an increase of 8.46 %. This multifunctional textile integrates radiative cooling with moisture management, exhibiting new avenues for sustainable, energy-efficient, and intelligent textile design that significantly enhances human comfort in hot climates.

Integrating radiative cooling or solar heating into personal thermal management (PTM) textiles has attracted considerable interest. However, most current PTM textiles exhibit single functionality, limited biocompatibility and degradability, and the impact of intense perspiration is often ignored. Herein, a dual-mode polylactide-based PTM textile (DMTex) with asymmetric optical properties, wettability, and pore size distribution for efficient personal moisture and thermal management is designed via layered electrospinning. The unique optical structure and addition of functional particles endow the cooling side of DMTex with excellent solar reflectance (96.97%) and infrared emissivity (86.93%), whereas the heating side has 85.83% solar absorptance. Compared with white and black polylactic acid fabrics, DMTex achieves an additional cooling effect of 14.32 ℃ and a heating effect of 13.09 ℃ under 1100 W m −2 solar radiation. Moreover, the three-layer construction design endows DMTex with exceptional unidirectional moisture-wicking and anti-backflow performance. In addition, DMTex exhibits excellent wearability, biocompatibility, and degradability. Such a dual-mode and sustainable DMTex presents great potential for achieving efficient personal moisture and thermal comfort. Graphical
