Physicochemical properties and cytocompatibility of radiation-resistant and anti-washout calcium phosphate cement by introducing artemisia sphaerocephala krasch gum

Chenyu Tang,Teliang Lu,Haishan Shi,Jiandong Ye

The anti-washout ability of calcium phosphate cement (CPC) determines the effectiveness of CPC in clinical application. The γ-ray irradiation method often used in the sterilization process of CPC products is easy to degrade some commonly polymer anti-washout agent, which greatly reduces its anti-washout performance. Artemisia sphaerocephala Krasch gum (ASKG) has the potential of radiation resistance and anti-washout, but no one has considered its performance as anti-washout agent of CPC and mechanism of radiation resistance and anti-washout so far. In this study, we report the effect of γ-ray on ASKG and the effectiveness of ASKG for enhancing of radiation resistance and anti-washout ability of CPC, the physical, chemical properties and in vitro cell behaviors of ASKG-CPCs were also investigated. The results showed that addition of ASKG before and after irradiation could significantly enhanced the anti-washout performance of CPC, which is differ from conventional anti-washout agents. Meanwhile, ASKG-CPCs had an excellent injectable property and biocompatibility, and low content of irradiated ASKG could promote bone differentiation well. We anticipate that the radiation-resistant and anti-washout ASKG-CPCs have potential application prospect in orthopaedic surgery.

Enhanced mechanical properties and anti-washout of calcium phosphate cement/montmorillonite composite bone-cement for bone-repair applications

Min Wei,Yufei Tang,Lei Chen,Bo Zhang,Shitong Zhang,Kang Zhao,Zixiang Wu

Calcium phosphate cement (CPC) has received extensive attention as a filler for heteromorphic bone defects owing to its excellent biocompatibility, self-curing property, and degradability. However, the low strength and poor anti-washout properties still restrict the use of CPC in the clinical application. In this study, montmorillonite (MMT) was introduced into CPC to prepare CPC/MMT composite bone-cement. The compressive strength of the composite cement was synergistically enhanced by increasing intermolecular bonding and the impeding crack propagation . Owing to its unique lamellar structure , viscosity, and hydrophilicity, CPC bound to MMT via the bridging effect of water molecules and the electrostatic interaction between MMT and Ca 2+ . When subjected to an applied load, crack propagation was further hindered by MMT pull-out, load transfer, crack deflection, crack branching, and crack bridging, which consuming more fracture energy, significantly improving the compressive strength of the cement strength. At 50 wt% MMT addition, the compressive strength of the composite bone cement (CPC+50%MMT) was 48.5 MPa, which is 227.04% higher than that of CPC alone (14.83 MPa). Surprisingly, the anti-washout ability of CPC was significantly improved, as indicated by the decrease in the mass loss of the composite bone cement from 71.25 to 6.48%, overcoming the trade-off between strength and anti-washout properties. The final setting time was shortened from 22 to 11.37 min, and the injectability exceeded 90%. In addition, the composite bone cement demonstrated outstanding cell adhesion and proliferation abilities, making it a promising material for bone-repair therapy.

Fast-setting and anti-washout tricalcium silicate/disodium hydrogen phosphate composite cement for dental application

Meng Wu,Bailong Tao,Tao Wang,Yue Zhang,Wenchao Wei,Chunyu Wang

Although Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) has been widely used in endodontic treatments and gained great clinical success, development of fast-setting tricalcium silicate (TCS)-based cements with good anti-washout performance remains a huge challenge. Hence, this study was aimed at engineering a novel TCS-based endodontic material to meet abovementioned requirements via introduction of disodium hydrogen phosphate (Na 2 HPO 4 ) as the hydration accelerator. The setting time, flowability , mechanical strength and anti-washout property of the composite cements were evaluated. Furthermore, bioinert ZrO 2 was used as radiopacifier and the effects of ZrO 2 content on the radiopacity, physicochemical properties, apatite-formation ability, pH, antibacterial activity, cement-dentin interface and cell cytocompatibility of radiopaque composite cements with an optimal component were also investigated. The results showed that the setting time of cement pastes notably shortened from 169 to 33 min with adjusting the amount of Na 2 HPO 4 from 0 to 30 wt%, whereas flowability and compressive strength of cements exhibited a decreasing trend. Meanwhile, cement pastes displayed good anti-washout performance because of acceleratory effect of Na 2 HPO 4 on hydration process of TCS and formation of additional binding phase. Furthermore, the radiopacity of hybrid cements obviously enhanced with the addition of ZrO 2 while a little increase in setting time was observed, and washout resistance of composite pastes was slightly reduced with the increase in ZrO 2 amount. The radiopaque composite pastes could induce apatite deposition on their surfaces and showed good marginal adaptation at cement-dentin interface. Additionally, the addition of ZrO 2 content had no significant influences on alkaline formation ability, antibacterial activity, and cell cytocompatibility of cement pastes. Our results indicated that TCS/Na 2 HPO 4 /ZrO 2 cement exhibited a great potential to be used as a novel dental material and might be a promising candidate for endodontic treatments.

A novel anti-washout curing solution of calcium phosphate cement prepared via irradiation polymerization

Chenyu Tang,Zhaohui Dang,Teliang Lu,Jiandong Ye

The anti-washout ability of calcium phosphate cement (CPC) determines its effectiveness in clinical application. In the current research, the common method for improving the anti-washout ability of CPC is to add anti-washout polymer agents. Sodium polyacrylate powder is an excellent anti-washout agent but when bonded with CPC it basically degrades the anti-washout performance of CPC after γ-ray irradiation, and is widely used in the sterilization process of CPC products. Therefore, we propose a method for the preparation of a sodium polyacrylate solution through irradiation polymerization as curing solution for CPC. This method first uses γ-ray irradiation sterilization to improve the anti-washout ability of CPC directly. It not only avoids the adverse effects of γ-rays on anti-washout agents, but also the CPC blended using this sodium polyacrylate solution had good biological properties and injectability. It provides a new method for promoting the anti-washout properties of calcium phosphate cement, which is of great significance for expanding the clinical application of CPC.

Improvement of anti-washout property of calcium phosphate cement by addition of konjac glucomannan and guar gum

Qian Guowen,Li Xingmei,He Fupo,Ye Jiandong

The inferior anti-washout property of injectable calcium phosphate cement (CPC) limits its wider application in clinic. In this study, the improvement of anti-washout performance of CPC by addition of konjac glucomannan or guar gum, which was dissolved in the CPC liquid, was first studied. The influence of KGM/GG blend with different mass ratios on the anti-washout property, compressive strength and in vitro cytocompatibility of CPC was estimated. The results revealed that small amount of KGM or GG could obviously enhance the anti-washout property of CPC. Moreover, the washout resistance efficiency of KGM/GG blend was better than KGM or GG alone. The addition of KGM/GG blend slightly shortened the final setting time of CPC. Although the introduction of KGM/GG blend reduced the compressive strength of CPC, the compressive strength still reached or surpassed that of human cancellous bone. The best KGM/GG mass ratio was 5:5, which was most efficient at not only reducing CPC disintegration, but also increasing compressive strength. The addition of KGM/GG blend obviously promoted the cells proliferation on the CPC. In short, the CPC modified by KGM/GG blend exhibited excellent anti-washout property, appropriate setting time, adequate compressive strength, and good cytocompatibility, and has the potential to be used in bone defect repair. The addition of KGM/GG blend significantly improved the anti-washout property of CPC. The best KGM/GG mass ratio was 5:5, which was most efficient in reducing the CPC disintegration.

Improving the anti-washout property of calcium phosphate cement by introducing konjac glucomannan/κ-carrageenan blend

Guowen Qian,Xingmei Li,Fupo He,Jiandong Ye

Anti-washout calcium phosphate cement (CPC) was prepared by dissolving water-soluble konjac glucomannan (KGM) and κ-carrageenan (KC) blend in the cement liquid. The anti-washout property, setting time, compressive strength and in vitro cytocompatibility of the CPC modified with KGM/KC blend were evaluated. The results indicated that the CPC pastes modified with KGM/KC blend exhibited excellent anti-washout property. The addition of KGM/KC blend shortened the setting time and increased the injectability of CPC. Although the introduction of KGM/KC blend reduced the compressive strength of CPC, the compressive strength still surpassed that of human cancellous bone. The optimal KGM/KC mass ratio was 2:8, with which the modified cement exhibited the most efficient washout resistance and the highest compressive strength. The introduction of KGM/KC blend obviously promoted the proliferation of mouse bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells. This anti-washout CPC modified by KGM/KC blend with excellent in vitro cytocompatibility will have good prospects for application in bone defect repair.

Preparation and characterization of calcium phosphate cement with enhanced tissue adhesion for bone defect repair

Weibin Zhong,Lin Sun,Tao Yu,Changren Zhou

Anti-washout and tissue adhesion properties are essential for the clinical application of injectable bone materials. In this study, we prepared calcium phosphate cement (CPC) with anti-washout and tissue adhesion properties and attempted to build covalent bonds between CPC and the amino groups in bone tissue under a self-regulating pH system in the CPC (acidic to basic). The results of push-out tests demonstrated that a significant enhancement (from 6.42 ± 0.76 N to 61.5 ± 4.09 N) in tissue adhesion was obtained with the addition of 6% (w/w) oxidized sodium alginate (OSA) in CPC. The FTIR, XRD , anti-washout test, XPS, pH test, and SEM results suggested that the synergistic effect of OSA-citric acid (CA) led to the formation of a three-dimensional gel network structure in the CPC, and the Schiff base reaction between aldehyde and amino groups induced adhesion between CPC and the bone tissue. Further, the addition of less OSA had no significant negative effect on the hydration properties of CPC. Our work aims to promote the development of injectable bone material in clinical applications.

Controlled release of herbicides through glyphosate intercalated layered double hydroxides and enhancement of anti-scouring ability via poly-l-aspartic acid and chitosan modification

Fanping Kong,Qian Zhang,Yuan Xie,Jiyue Ding,Hui Zhao,Zihan Zhang,Zequn Ma,Hailin Cong,Zilin Meng

Nanocarrier preparations could effectively improve the utilization rate of pesticides, and reduce pesticide loss. In this study, glyphosate (GLY)-loaded Mg Al layered double hydroxide (GLY@LDH) was synthesized via an in-situ method. Subsequently, GLY@LDH composite samples were prepared using a layer-by-layer self-assembly approach and modified with poly-L-aspartic acid (PASP) and chitosan (CS). XRD, FT-IR, SEM, and Zeta potential characterization confirmed that GLY was successfully loaded in the interlayer of LDHs and PASP/CS were successfully encapsulated on the surface of the composite sample. The release effect in different ionic solutions and soils was studied and analyzed. The release behavior conforms to the Ritger-Peppas kinetic model, and the release mechanism was ion exchange, which was further explored by means of XRD, SEM, and molecular simulation. The results of the anti-scouring experiment and contact angle measurement indicated that the layered self-assembly material enhanced the washing resistance of the material. The practical application effect of the sample was verified through a pot experiment. This study provides new insights into the simple preparation of pesticide-controlled release formulations that reduce leaching losses.

Premixed tricalcium silicate/sodium phosphate dibasic cements for root canal filling

Meng Wu,Tao Wang,Yue Zhang

Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) showed good clinical outcomes for many endodontic diseases. However, poor handling characteristics and anti-washout ability of MTA largely limit its widespread applications. In this study, a premixed tricalcium silicate (TCS)/sodium phosphate dibasic (SPD) cement was developed to overcome the aforementioned disadvantages of MTA. The hardening mechanism of TCS/SPD premixed pastes was studied. The influences of SPD on washout resistance, injectability, flowablity, setting time and compressive strength of the premixed TCS pastes were investigated. Considering required radiopacity, ZrO 2 was incorporated, and radiopacity, anti-washout characteristics, bioactivity and sealability of radiopaque cements were studied. The results revealed that addition of SPD changed the phase compositions and morphologies of hydration products of cements. The anti-washout performance of TCS/SPD premixed cements was greatly enhanced due to improved cohesion of pastes. Additionally, TCS/SPD premixed pastes had good injectability and flowability . The setting time and compressive strength displayed a decreasing trend after adding SPD. The radiopacity of cements significantly increased from 1.54 to 3.64 mm Al with increasing ZrO 2 content from 0 to 30 wt%, and the radiopaque premixed pastes showed good apatite formation-ability and sealing property. These results indicated that radiopaque TCS/SPD premixed cements could be a novel promising dental cement .

Preparation, characterization and in vitro cell performance of anti-washout calcium phosphate cement modified by sodium polyacrylate

Xingmei Li,Fupo He,Jiandong Ye

The anti-washout ability of calcium phosphate cement (CPC) is essential for its application in massive hemorrhage regions. However, the undesirable anti-washout property of CPC inhibits its broader application. This study reports the effectiveness of sodium polyacrylate (PAAS) in the enhancement of anti-washout ability of CPC. The washout resistance, injectability, rheological property, setting time, compressive strength, phase, microstructure, and in vitro cell behaviors of the modified CPC were evaluated. The results showed that PAAS significantly enhanced the anti-washout property and injectability of the cement paste. Meanwhile, PAAS hardly affected the precipitation of hydroxyapatite (HAp), setting time, and microstructure. A low content of PAAS slightly reduced the compressive strength of CPC, but the compressive strength of CPC gradually increased with increasing PAAS content. The in vitro cell assessments demonstrated that all the samples were biocompatible and mouse bone mesenchymal stem cells (mBMSCs) well adhered, spread, and proliferated on the samples. This anti-washout CPC modified by PAAS has potential application prospects in orthopedic surgery.

Development and characterization of underwater-cast ultra-high-performance geopolymer concrete

Mingzheng Zhu,Sizhe Xue,Jixiang Zhu,Muhammad Riaz Ahmad,Jian-Guo Dai

Geopolymer concrete has emerged as a promising eco-friendly alternative to conventional cementitious materials, particularly for sustainable underwater engineering applications. However, its inherent brittleness limits its broader use in such environments. To address this challenge, this study developed and evaluated an innovative underwater ultra-high-performance geopolymer concrete (U-UHPGC). The effects of varying water-to-precursor (w/p) ratios (0.33, 0.30, and 0.27) and two fly ash (FA) to ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) ratios (5:5 and 2:8) on the anti-washout resistance, rheological behavior, mechanical performance, and microstructural characteristics of U-UHPGC were systematically investigated. The results revealed that lower w/p ratios and higher GGBFS contents significantly enhanced the yield stress and plastic viscosity of the paste, thereby improving its resistance to washout in underwater conditions. Furthermore, the optimized mix design achieved compressive and flexural strengths of up to 81.84 MPa and 12.83 MPa, respectively, alongside excellent flexural deformation capacity. Microstructural analysis demonstrated that reduced w/p ratios and increased GGBFS content led to a denser matrix, promoting stronger interfacial bonding between polypropylene fibers and the matrix. This enhanced bonding allowed the fibers to effectively bridge and arrest cracks. As a key environmental advantage, the U-UHPGC formulation embodies a substantial reduction approximately 40 % in both energy demand and carbon footprint over traditional U-UHPC. These findings contribute valuable insights for the advancement of high-performance geopolymer concretes tailored for durable and sustainable marine infrastructure.

Resolving rheological dilemma in non-dispersible underwater concrete: Conflict between fluidity and anti-washout

Zhaoyang Sun,Bin Xu,Zixuan Yang,Ming Sun,Xiangping Xian,Binmeng Chen

The washout resistance of non-dispersible underwater concrete (NWC) is typically improved at the cost of a significant loss of flowability, which poses challenges in construction processes such as pumping and placing. Herein, we demonstrate a novel strategy to balance washout resistance and fluidity of UWC via in-situ copolymerization of sodium acrylate (SA) and acrylamide (AM), where the copolymers formed at different monomer ratios exhibit different roles due to their inherent properties. Results reveal that, before microstructural `disruption, copolymers with higher charge density preferentially adsorb onto cement particle surfaces, reinforcing the flocculated structure through the bridging effect. After predominant microstructural breakdown, copolymers with longer chain thicken the interstitial solution through chain association and entanglement, potentially forming a dynamic network with cement particles and reducing flowability. The dynamic yield stress of S7A3 remains below 150 Pa at 30 min, indicating favorable flowability during placement. In contrast, its static yield stress exceeds 600 Pa at 60 min, corresponding to a washout loss of only ∼1 %, thereby demonstrating a well-balanced performance between high fluidity and markedly enhanced washout resistance. Our work proposes a novel strategy for designing UWC tailored to practical application scenarios with a balance between washout resistance and fluidity and sheds light on the understanding of mechanisms underlying the rheological manipulation via in-situ copolymerization.
