The traditional utilization of coal fuels is primarily through direct combustion to generate electricity, with low efficiency and significant carbon dioxide emissions conflicting with the goal of carbon neutrality. Here, for the first time, we proposed a novel electrochemical system to achieve the tri-generation of hydrogen, power, and methane from coal-based fuels, with CO 2 emission efficiency reduced in tail gas, enabled by protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) combined with water gasification of coal and CO 2 methanation. As demonstrated, the system firstly achieved an enhanced hydrogen production rate of up to 34.8 μmol min −1 g −1 from the syngas produced by coal gasification. Sequentially, the system achieved an excellent peak power density of 868 mW cm −2 at 600 °C in the PCFCs fueled by the syngas, enhanced by a catalytic functional layer (CFL, NiMn@YSZ). In addition, the system is able to produce methane at 6.3 mL min −1 during in-situ CO 2 methanation at 500 °C with a current density of 110 mA cm −2 . This work introduces a new electrochemical strategy for efficiently utilizing coal to generate electricity and value-added chemicals.

Cathode materials greatly govern the performance of protonic ceramics fuel cells (PCFCs), and development of suitable cathodes for PCFCs now becomes important. In this study, the traditional proton conductor BaZrO 3 is tailored with Sr and Fe elements, aiming to design proper cathodes for PCFCs. The structural, electronic, and catalytic effects of dual-element doping on BaZrO 3 -based materials are systemically investigated. Experimental and computational analyses reveal that a 75 % iron doping concentration (BaZr 0 · 25 Fe 0 · 75 O 3 ) markedly enhances oxygen vacancy concentration, reduces proton migration barriers, and elevates electrical conductivity. Notably, moderate strontium doping (50 %) synergistically improves performance, whereas excessive doping (75 %) induces adverse effects on oxygen vacancy concentration, proton migration, and electrical conductivity. The optimized Ba 0 · 5 Sr 0 · 5 Zr 0 · 25 Fe 0 · 75 O 3 cathode achieves a peak power density of 945 mW cm -2 at 700 °C. These findings elucidate the interplay between dopant elements, doping concentrations, and material properties related to electrochemical performance, offering actionable strategies for designing high-performance PCFC cathodes.

Oxygen reduction and proton conduction originated from hydration are two key steps in the cathode process of protonic ceramic fuel cells. In this work, Pr 6 O 11 is impregnated into a cobalt-free BaCe 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ cathode, resulting in an improved activity of lattice oxygen and a moderate enhancement of the electrical conductivity, both of which are beneficial for charge transfer, the rate-determining step of oxygen reduction process at the cathode. The polarization resistance of bare BaCe 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ cathode for oxygen reduction is 0.115 Ω cm 2 at 700 °C, which is reduced significantly to 0.039 Ω cm 2 with the addition of 30 wt% Pr 6 O 11 . Besides, the hydration ability of the cathode is also improved with Pr 6 O 11 , and thus the combination of proton and oxygen is facilitated. A single cell with 30 wt% Pr 6 O 11 -70 wt% BaCe 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ composite cathode exhibits the highest maximum power density of 1406 mW cm −2 at 700 °C. The composite cathode also shows a good stability.

The sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode is a key step in protonic ceramic fuel cells. In this work, Pr 1.7 Sr 0.3 Ni 0.7 Cu 0.3 O 4+δ cathode with a Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) structure is modified with the doping of Ba, and BaPrO 3-δ nanoparticles are formed on the surface of the cathode. The addition of Ba improves the oxygen vacancy concentration and the electrical conductivity of the cathode, and the cathode with the nominal composition of Pr 1.7 Ba 0.15 Sr 0.3 Ni 0.7 Cu 0.3 O 4+δ shows the highest activity for the ORR process. The cathode shows the lowest polarization resistance of 0.055 Ω cm 2 at 700 °C. The hydration ability of the cathode is also enhanced with Ba. The maximum power density of a protonic ceramic fuel cell with Pr 1.7 Sr 0.3 Ni 0.7 Cu 0.3 O 4+δ cathode increases from 877 to 1262 mW cm −2 at 700 °C after the doping of Ba in the cathode. The cell also shows a promising durability.

Two BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.2 O 3-δ (BZCY) powders prepared by solid-state reaction (BZCY(sr)) and sol-gel (BZCY(sg)) methods and three NiO powders (two commercial NiO with large (NiO(L)) and small (NiO(S)) particles and one prepared by solution-infiltration method (NiO(I)) are used to study the effect of the particle sizes of BZCY powder and NiO sintering aid on the sinterability and conductivity of sintered BZCY electrolytes for protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs). The BZCY and NiO powders are examined by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The microstructures of the six BZCY-NiO mixtures sintered at 1500 °C in air for 6 h, named as sr-L, sr-S, sr-I, sg-L, sg-S, and sg-I, are characterized by SEM to compare their pore morphology and grain size , and their conductivities from 550 to 800 °C in a 5 vol% H 2 –N 2 atmosphere are measured using the four-probe and impedance spectroscopy methods, respectively. The results show that sr-L and sg-L are not fully dense with large pores, most of them are at the grain boundaries; sr-S and sg-S have a much denser microstructure; sr-I and sg-I have the highest density with fine pores. The average grain size , the conductivity, and the grain-boundary resistance follow the orders of sr-L (8.16 μm) ≈ sg-L (8.53 μm) < sr-S (10.59 μm) ≈ sg-I (10.65 μm) < sg-S (14.07 μm) < sg-I (26.08 μm), sr-L < sg-L < sr-S < sg-S ≈ sr-I < sg-I, and sr-L > sg-L > sr-S > sg-S ≈ sr-I > sg-I, respectively. The above results indicate that both the density and grain size affect the conductivity critically, and sg-I with the small-particle BZCY and fine and uniformly distributed NiO sintering aid has the highest sintered density and the biggest grains (fewest grain boundaries) and in turn the highest conductivity (0.039 S cm −1 at 800 °C). A cell with the sg-I electrolyte demonstrates electrochemical performance 1.8 times higher than that with the sr-L electrolyte.

Ammonia-fueled protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) are emerging as promising alternatives to H 2 -fueled PCFCs, offering advantages such as higher energy density and enhanced safety. However, their widespread application is impeded by challenges, including insufficient catalytic activity towards ammonia and limited stability of the anode structure. Herein, we report a rational design for Ni 97 Co 3 -BaCe 0.7 Zr 0.1 Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3− δ (BCZYYb) cermet anodes, aimed at enhancing both catalytic activity and durability for ammonia utilization. The cell featuring the Ni 97 Co 3 -BCZYYb anode leverage the synergistic interaction between Ni and Co to enhance ammonia adsorption and nitrogen desorption, resulting in a remarkable 67.8 % increase in power density when operating with NH 3 at 600 °C. Notably, upon switching the fuel from H 2 to NH 3 , this achieves an unprecedented power retention of 87.2 % at 700 °C, representing one of the highest values recorded for ammonia-fueled PCFCs, while most ammonia-fueled cells exhibit power retention in the range of only 60–80 %. Furthermore, the cell with Ni 97 Co 3 -BCZYYb cermet anode demonstrates exceptional durability, stable operation over 30 h at 650 °C under NH 3 with no degradation observed. This longevity is attributed to the excellent sintering resistance of the NiCo alloy, highlighting the potential of the Ni 97 Co 3 -BCZYYb cermet anode for long-term applications. This work provides an effective strategy for designing highly active and durable anodes for ammonia-fueled PCFCs.

An anode-supported tubular protonic ceramic fuel cell with BaCe 0.7 Zr 0.1 Y 0.2 O 3-δ electrolyte is fabricated using dip-coating technique. Electrochemical performances of the cell are tested at temperatures from 600 to 200 °C, utilizing humidified H 2 (3 vol% H 2 O) as fuel and ambient air as oxidant. With an effective area of 2.3 cm 2 , the cell yields a peak power density of 465 mW cm −2 at 600 °C and 118 mW cm −2 at 450 °C. Even when the temperature is as low as 200 °C, there is still an output power of 3 mW. Stability of the cell under 600 °C is tested by operating the cell at a constant voltage of 0.7 V. The test lasts for 30 h during which the operating power density decreases rapidly in the first 10 h, then tend to be stable at 300 mW cm −2 .

Samarium oxide (Sm 2 O 3 ), a rare earth sesquioxide, shows that a great potential in proton-conducting fuel cells. However, the stability of Sm 2 O 3 based cell remains a challenge. Herein we reported a facile method for enhancing the stability via the incorporation of sodium content into Sm 2 O 3 . This study discloses that the existence of sodium induces phase transition of Sm 2 O 3 from monoclinic to cubic phase beneficial for fast proton transportation. Further mechanism investigation reveals that the cubic phase structure of Sm 2 O 3 is stabilized resulting from substitution of sodium. Compared with commercial Sm 2 O 3 (CSM), the fuel cell employing Na–Sm 2 O 3 (NSM) as electrolyte delivers an improved peak power density of 570 mW cm −2 and the extended stability over 100 h under 130 mWcm −2 at 520 °C. In this study, NSM is successfully developed as a stable electrolyte material for proton conduct fuel cells, expanding its application in electrochemical devices.

Rational design of the electrode microstructure is an important strategy to improve the performance of solid oxide fuel cells. Electrospinning is an effective approach for the production of electrode materials with a nanofiber microstructure, which provides straight and continuous pathways for ionic and electronic conduction. In this study, the self-assembled La0.7Sr0.3Fe0.9Ni0.1O3−δ (LSFN)–Ce0.8Sm0.2O2−δ (SDC) composite with a hollow nanofiber structure is synthesized as the cathode material of protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) through a coaxial electrospinning process. LSFN and SDC are both distributed uniformly in the composite cathode. Compared with composite cathodes prepared through electrospinning with solid and core–shell nanofiber structures, the hollow-fiber LSFN–SDC cathode shows a higher specific surface area and provides more channels for gas diffusion, both of which are beneficial for the oxygen reduction reaction. The LSFN–SDC composite cathode with the hollow fiber structure exhibits the lowest polarization resistance of 0.035 Ω cm2 at 700 °C. A PCFC with that cathode shows a maximum power density of 1598 mW cm–2 and a promising short-term stability at 700 °C.

The development of symmetrical solid oxide fuel cells with identical cathode and anode is beneficial for thermal matching and reducing the cost. Herein, proton-conducting electrolyte and novel high catalytic activity electrode material for symmetrical solid oxide fuel cells are proposed. Ni-doping at the B-site of (Sr0.8Ce0.2)0.95FeO3−δ(SCF) indicates reduced cell edge lengths, cell volume, and a more porous honeycomb structure. The B-site elements in oxide tend to have a high oxidation state via Ni-doping. Simple doping modification in SCF causes better thermal matching between the electrode and electrolyte and form more oxygen vacancies at the operating temperature. At the anode side, Ni-doping improves the stability of the symmetric electrode in reducing the atmosphere. The polarization resistance of symmetrical cells for new electrode material is half of the original both in oxidation and reduction atmosphere, which indicates boosted electrochemical performance for the cathode and anode. At the same time, Ni-doping reduces the impedance activation energy of the anode reaction in symmetric cells. The output performance of the cell is 210.4 mW·cm−2at 750 °C and the thickness of the electrolyte is 400 μm, achieving a highly efficient symmetrical electrode in proton ceramic fuel cells. The new finding of materials provides a novel high efficiency symmetrical electrode and proposes guidance for the improvement of solid oxide fuel cells at a reduced temperature.

Achieving both high catalytic performance and low thermal expansion coefficient poses a challenge for the cathode materials in protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs). Most efforts are directed towards reducing the thermal expansion coefficient of Co-based materials, where often accompanies sacrifices in performance. In this article, bits of Co and Ni elements was dopped in BaPrO 3 material to adjust the electronical and proton transport ability. Triple-conducting oxide BaPr 1-x M x O 3-δ (M = Co/Ni, x = 0.1 and 0.2) was prepared as potential cathode for protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs). The crystal structure, conductivity, proton uptake, proton transport, and electrochemical performance of were characterized in detail by experiment and first-principles calculations. BaPrO 3 , BaPr 0.9 Co 0.1 O 3-δ, and BaPr 0.8 Co 0.1 Ni 0.1 O 3-δ (BPCN) material present n-type conductive behavior while BaPr 0.9 Ni 0.1 O 3-δ material present p-type conductive behavior at high temperature. Among them, BPCN material presents the best performance for the highest electron and proton transport ability. The single cell with single BPCN material as cathode showed good performance with a peak power density of 1.42 W cm −2 and polarization resistance of only 0.07 Ω cm 2 at 700 °C, and there was no significant degradation within 100 h. The performance of Pr-based material is comparable to that of most Co and Fe-based materials, which gave a guide for the development of novel cathodes for PCFCs.

Self-assembled La 0.7 Sr 0.3 Fe 0.9 Ni 0.1 O 3-δ -Ce 0.8 Sm 0.2 O 1.9-δ (LSFN-SDC) composite cathode with a three-dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) structure is synthesized using poly(methyl methacrylate) as the template for protonic ceramic fuel cells . The LSFN and SDC phases both distribute uniformly in the cathode. The SDC phase reduces the thickness of the walls of the 3DOM structure and thus hinders the bulk conduction of electrons. SDC also decreases the specific surface area and the surface oxygen reactivity of the cathode, leading to the suppression of the adsorption and dissociation of O 2 . However, the SDC phase provides the conduction pathway for oxygen ions and enlarges three phase boundary consequently, which facilitates the charge transfer steps. The thickness of the walls and the specific surface area of the composite cathode are both increased with the rise of the concentration of the nitrate precursor solution, resulting in the acceleration of the cathode process. Nevertheless, an excessive precursor concentration leads to the destroy of the 3DOM structure. The 3DOM composite cathode exhibits the lowest R p of 0.039 Ω cm 2 , and a single cell with that cathode shows maximum power density of 1484 mW cm −2 at 700 °C. The cell exhibits a short-term stability of 120 h at 700 °C without noticeable degradation.
