2-Phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid (PBTCA) is an antiscalant that is widely used in reverse osmosis (RO) systems. Because of its high concentration in RO concentrate, eutrophication risk and anti-precipitation properties may affect subsequent treatments, therefore treatment strategies are needed to eliminate such substances. In this study, PBTCA was degraded by ozonation . The results show that PBTCA reacted with ozone molecules and hydroxyl radicals , with second-order rate constants of (0.12 ± 0.002) and (7.83 ± 1.51) × 10 8 L mol −1 s −1 , respectively. The phosphorus in PBTCA (P P ) was transformed into organic phosphorus except for PBTCA (P O ), and inorganic phosphorus (P I ); P O was further transformed into P I . The changes in the concentrations of these phosphorus forms were investigated by model simulation. Simulation showed that the rate of P P transformation into P O was 5.5 times higher than that into P I . PBTCA was ozonated much faster at alkaline pH than at acidic pH. This is ascribed to different amounts of ozone molecules and hydroxyl radicals, and their different reaction rates with PBTCA. Furthermore, anti-precipitation property was reduced during ozonation , as shown by the amounts and morphology changes of the precipitates. PBTCA concentration for 50% anti-precipitation (AP 50 ) did not change during ozonation, indicating that the transformation products generated during ozonation did not have anti-precipitation effects. Phosphorus in PBTCA was removed by ozonation–coagulation treatment. Total phosphorus and inorganic phosphorus were removed efficiently by using ferric chloride as a coagulant. The coagulants tended to bind with inorganic phosphorus to form flocs. Meanwhile, flocs were more easily to aggregate and precipitate as anti-precipitation effect was gradually removed, thus more phosphorus was removed. A combination of ozonation and coagulation removed PBTCA effectively and simultaneously reduced its anti-precipitation property and phosphorus.

The performance and mechanism of typical scaling inhibitors, i.e., 1-hydroxy ethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP) and 2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid (PBTCA), in inhibiting calcium carbonate scaling were investigated. Results of the static experiment at 30 °C and 80 °C revealed that at the optimal concentration, the scaling inhibition efficiency of PBTCA was superior to that of HEDP. Additionally, X-ray powder diffraction evaluation demonstrated that in comparison with HEDP, PBTCA inhibited the growth of the (1 0 4) crystal plane of calcite more evidently. Scanning electron microscopy analysis indicated that the addition of scaling inhibitors induced the crystal transformation of CaCO 3 from calcite to aragonite. Molecular dynamics simulation also confirmed that the interaction of PBTCA with the (1 0 4) crystal surface of calcite is more apparent than that of HEDP. This observation was a consequence of the PBTCA being more negatively charged, as determined via a quantum chemical calculation. The calculation further indicated that the spatial distance of PBTCA to the (1 0 4) face of calcite was less due to stronger chelating ability and better suitability of the structure. As a result, in the tested temperature range, PBTCA exhibited the more effective inhibitory effect against calcium carbonate scaling.

The high salinity and coexistence of scaling ions (Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , HCO 3 − ) in wastewater challenge the efficacy and durability of palladium (Pd)-mediated electrocatalytic hydrodechlorination (EHDC) reaction for chlorinated organic pollutant detoxification, due to the accompanying Cl − poisoning at Pd sites and scaling on electrode. In a concentrated NaCl solution (5.8 g L − 1 ) with Ca 2+ (80.0 mg L − 1 ), Mg 2+ (30.0 mg L − 1 ) and HCO 3 − (180.0 mg L − 1 ), the EHDC efficiency of Pd towards 2,4-dichlorophenol decreases significantly from 67.8% to 33.1% in 72.0 h of reaction, and the electrode is covered with layers of fluffy aragonite precipitate. Herein we demonstrate the inclusion of a commercial antiscalant 2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid (PBTC) can prevent both scale formation and Cl − poisoning, leading to an efficient and steady EHDC process. A mechanistic study reveals that the unique dual function of PBTC primarily originates from the bearing phosphonate and carboxyl groups. With the large affinity of these groups (especially the phosphonate group) for scaling cations and Pd, the PBTC can chelate and stabilize the scaling cations in water and replace Cl − at Pd surface. It can also release protons, and trigger the formation of more electron-deficient Pd δ+ species via PBTC-Pd binding, leading to an enhanced EHDC. This work provides effective solutions to the scaling/poisoning issues that commonly encountered in real wastewater and paves a solid road for EHDC application in pollution abatement.

The separation and recovery of uranium resources from nuclear waste solutions is important for achieving uranium reuse and environmental protection. In this study, a novel adsorbent, 2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid (PBTCA)-decorated chitosan-coated magnetic silica nanoparticles, was fabricated and applied to the highly selective adsorption of uranium from aqueous solution. Selective sorption in a multi-ion solution (pH 4.0) containing 14 coexisting cations resulted in CoFe 2 O 4 @SiO 2 @CS-PBTCA showing an excellent uranium adsorption capacity of up to 83.16 mg g −1 , which was much higher than that of ungrafted CoFe 2 O 4 @SiO 2 @CS (29.99 mg g −1 ). The adsorbent also exhibited higher acid resistance than uncoated silica adsorbent under pH 1.0 conditions, with CoFe 2 O 4 @SiO 2 @CS-PBTCA showing barely any iron and cobalt leaching, while CoFe 2 O 4 @CS-PBTCA showed iron and cobalt leaching amounts of 2.97 and 0.93 mg L −1 , respectively. The desorption experiment used 0.2 M PBTCA (pH 1.0) as eluent, with the results showing that uranium ions were readily and rapidly desorbed. Furthermore, CoFe 2 O 4 @SiO 2 @CS-PBTCA maintained outstanding stability and adsorption performance after five reuse cycles. The mechanism for U(VI) removal was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, with the results suggesting that the adsorbent binds to uranium mainly though oxygen atoms of carboxyl groups and phosphonic groups in PBTCA. This strategy shows strong potential for developing a variety of novel, highly active, acid resistance, and reusable immobilized functional magnetic materials for effective separation of uranium from a multi-ion solution.

A simple hydrothermal method was adopted to synthesize different inorganic-organic hybrid materials (Zr -x ), including zirconium ethylenediamine tetramethylene phosphine (Zr-EDTMP), 2-phosphobutane-1,2,4-zirconium tricarboxylate (Zr-PBTC), odium creatine phosphate zirconium phosphate (Zr-CP), and creatinol zirconium phosphate (Zr–COP). Various characterizations were utilized to explore the physical and chemical properties of materials. The applications of Zr -x in removing U(Ⅵ) were studied comprehensively. The effects of solution's pH value, contact time, initial concentration of U(Ⅵ), and temperature on adsorption were examined. Besides, the desorption, reusability, as well as adsorptive selectivity were investigated. The present study revealed that the U(Ⅵ) adsorption on Zr-EDTMP was in accordance with Sips isothermal model with the greatest adsorption capacity (317.4 mg/g) and the superior adsorptive selectivity for U(Ⅵ). Zr-EDTMP is a potentially high-efficient adsorbent for extracting U(Ⅵ) from radioactive wastewater .
