Traditionally, phosphors are developed by doping activators on standard crystallographic sites of selected inorganic hosts, thus enabling the prediction of their luminescence with some empirical models or theoretical calculations. Here, we propose the idea of interstitial site engineering as a totally different way to design phosphors with promising properties. In detail, a red-emitting phosphor La3Si6N11:Ce3+,Al3+ was developed by engineering the interstitial Ce3+ site, which produces an unusual red emission band (λem = 600–665 nm) under blue light excitation. The origin of this red emission was assigned from the first-principle calculation to the Ce3+ ion occupying the [Si8N8] void in the c∼1/2 layer of which the calculated transition energies matching with experiment within 0.1 eV. Such an interstitial Ce3+ site was created as a charge compensator for the aliovalent substitution of Si4+ by Al3+ ions. The red-enhanced La3Si6N11:Ce3+,Al3+ phosphor showed great potentials for improving the optical quality (i.e., color temperature and color rendition) of laser-driven white light. This work indicates that the interstitial site engineering is an efficient way for generating new luminescence centers and opens up an avenue for designing phosphors with appealing properties.

Inorganic fluorescent glass films have been widely considered in the field of high power laser lighting because of their excellent comprehensive properties as fluorescent conversion materials. Herein, we adjust the optimum sintering temperature to prepare a series of La3Si6N11:Ce3+ phosphor-in-glass films (LSN PiFs) with excellent optical properties on a single sapphire structure. The prepared LSN PiF has ultrahigh internal quantum efficiency (IQE) (98%) and excellent thermal stability. The thermal conductivity at room temperature can reach 9.8 Wm–1 K–1. When the temperature is 100 °C, the fluorescence intensity can still be maintained. The LSN:Ce phosphor particles did not react with the glass matrix and retained the original luminescence properties. Moreover, by further adjusting the concentration and thickness of LSN PiF, the luminous flux and luminous efficiency of LSN PiF under optimal conditions can reach 1071.73 and 207.58 lmW–1 under the excitation of 460 nm, which is the optimal result reported so far. In addition, the color rendering index (CRI) and low color temperature (CCT) are 64.05 and 5612.6 K, respectively, and the color coordinates are all close to the white light region. All the results show that LSN PiF has great application prospects in the high quality and high brightness laser lighting field.

As an inorganic color conversion material, phosphor-in-glass film (PiF) has received extensive attention in the sphere of laser-driven white lighting due to its excellent integrated performance. The yellow-emitting phosphor La 3 Si 6 N 11 :Ce has excellent thermal stability and wide emission band, which makes it more competitive than Y 3 Al 5 O 12 :Ce in laser-driven white lighting. Herein, we embedded La 3 Si 6 N 11 :Ce phosphor powder in a silicate glass matrix (SiO 2 –B 2 O 3 –CaO–Na 2 O) and sintered it on a sapphire substrate. In the silica-rich glass system, the network structure of silica-oxygen tetrahedral glass is more rigid and the thermal erosion of the phosphor by the silica-based glass is less, which makes the phosphor maintain better performance after low-temperature co-sintering. The quantum efficiency in the optimized LSN phosphor-in-glass film (LSN PiF) is up to 81 %, and the thermal conductivity is 10.2 Wm −1 K −1 , showing good thermal stability. Impressively, the LSN PiF produces a bright near-white light (0.3323,0.346) at a blue laser of 5.6 W, with corresponding luminous efficiency up to 195 lm/W. Moreover, LSN PiF can maintain about 80 % of the initial luminous intensity after continuous lighting for 24 h at the incident power of 3.5 W. These outstanding properties can advance the development of LSN phosphors in high power laser lighting applications.

The key to developing laser-driven solid-state lighting lies in high-performance color converters, which must be thermally robust under the high-power density excitation of a laser. Phosphor-in-glass (PiG) films are considered as a kind of promising color converter for laser lighting, but the poor thermal dissipation of the glass matrix will cause large thermal quenching of the PiG films and hence low luminous flux of lighting sources. In this work, Al2O3 particles, acting as a heat transfer medium, are introduced into the La3Si6N11:Ce3+ (LSN:Ce3+) PiG film to form a composite color converter for realizing high-brightness laser lighting. By optimizing the ratio of glass frits to Al2O3 as well as the film thickness, the Al2O3–LSN:Ce3+ composite PiG film shows a luminance saturation threshold of 23.08 W mm−2, which is 26.3% higher than that of the Al2O3-free LSN:Ce3+ PiG film (18.27 W mm−2). The luminous flux of the composite PiG film under blue laser excitation is improved by 51.4% and reaches 3120 lm, and the luminous flux of the laser-driven white light can reach up to 2886 lm. It indicates that the Al2O3–LSN:Ce3+ composite PiG film would be an interesting color converter for producing high-brightness laser-driven white light.

The development of laser-driven color converters with exceptional thermal stability and high luminous quality is critical to advancing lighting technologies. In this study, we successfully synthesized the AlN-La 3 Si 6 N 11 : Ce 3+ (AlN-LSN:Ce) phosphor-in-glass film (PiGF) composite by incorporating micron-sized AlN particles, which not only enhances heat dissipation but also acts as effective scattering centers to modulate the luminescent spot. Specifically, the presence of micron-sized AlN particles creates thermally conductive channels that effectively mitigate laser-induced heat accumulation, enabling the optimized AlN-LSN:Ce PiGF to withstand a laser power density of up to 20 W/mm 2 and achieve a maximum luminous flux of 1406 lm, which is 33.3% higher than that of the AlN-free LSN:Ce PiGF (15 W/mm 2 ). Meanwhile, the role of AlN particles as scattering centers influencing the luminescent spot size of LSN:Ce PiGF is confirmed, and the optimal AlN content is determined. Additionally, an AlN-LSN:Ce PiGF@sapphire@CaAlSiN 3 :Eu 2+ (CASN:Eu) PiGF sandwich structure-based lighting was fabricated, yielding warm white light emission with a color rendering index of 87.9, luminous efficiency of 109 lm/W, CIE coordinates of (0.35, 0.30), and a correlated color temperature of 4672 K. The proposed composite may contribute to the development of high-performance laser-driven color converters, which simultaneously address the critical requirements for efficient thermal management and precise luminous spot control.

Ce3+-doped nitride phosphors are promising color converters in laser-driven lighting and display technologies, but they suffer from serious loss in luminescence efficiency caused by the interfacial reaction between phosphor powders and glass powders during the fabrication of phosphor-in-glass bulks or films. In this work, the oxygen-free organic–inorganic hybrid glass (OIHG) Zn(Im)3(HbIm) (ZIF-62) was used instead of the traditional oxide glass to prepare an La3Si6N11:Ce3+ (LSN) phosphor converter by cofiring LSN with the ZIF-62 glass. The LSN phosphor-in-ZIF-62 glass converter well maintains the internal quantum efficiency of the original phosphor powders, showing a luminescence loss of only ∼1%. The sandwich-structured LSN-in-ZIF-62 glass converter, constructed by cofiring it with sapphire substrates, enables the generation of white lighting with a maximum luminous flux of 872.2 lm and a luminous efficacy of 291 lm W−1 when pumped by a blue laser diode at a powder density of 5.99 W mm−2. The use of the oxygen-free ZIF-62 glass provides a viable method to design nitride phosphor-based color converters for low-power laser-driven lighting, high-power LED lighting or projection applications.

Color converter is a key luminescent material in the laser-driven solid state lighting, which must bear high-density excitation and serious thermal attack from the incident laser. Here, a thermally robust yellow-emitting La 3 Si 6 N 11 :Ce-in-glass (LSN:Ce-PiG) film for laser lighting is reported by co-firing the LSN:Ce and glass powders on a thermally conductive sapphire substrate. No detectable interfacial reaction occurs between the LSN:Ce particle and glass matrix, enabling the film to fully inherit the original thermal robustness and high quantum efficiency. The optical performance of LSN:Ce-PiG-converted white laser light has been effectively optimized by changing the phosphor-to-glass (PtG) ratio and the film thickness. The highest light conversion efficiency is respectively achieved at PtG = 2:3 and the thickness of 70 µm, and the saturation threshold is found to decrease with either a higher PtG ratio or a thicker film. The optimized LSN:Ce-PiG film (P2G3-50) can withstand a maximum laser power density of 12.91 W mm −2 and produce a cool white light with a high luminous flux of 1076 lm (luminance of 773 Mcd m −2 ), a luminous efficiency of 166.05 lm W −1 , a color rendering index of 70. These results make the LSN:Ce-PiG film a considerably promising color converter for laser lighting.
