Low temperature NH3 selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR) technology is an efficient and economical strategy for cutting NOx emissions from power-generating equipment. In this study, a novel and highly efficient NH3-SCR catalyst, tourmaline-modified FeMnTiOx is presented, which was synthesized by a simple one-step sol–gel method. We found that the amount of tourmaline has an important impact on the catalytic performance of the modified FeMnTiOx-based catalysts, and the NOx conversion exceeded 80% from 160 to 380 °C with the addition of 5 wt % tourmaline. Compared with the pure FeMnTiOx, the catalytic efficiency at a temperature below 100 °C was increased by nearly 18.9%, and the operation temperature window was broadened significantly. The enhanced catalytic performance of the FeMnTiOx catalyst was mainly attributed to the small spherical nanoparticles structure around the tourmaline powders, resulting in the increased content of Mn3+, Mn4+, and chemical oxygen on the catalytic surface. These as-developed tourmaline-modified FeMnTiOx materials have been demonstrated to be promising as a new type highly efficient low temperature NH3-SCR catalyst.

The NH3-SCR activities and hydrothermal stabilities of fivexCu/MCM-22 zeolites with different Cu loadings (x= 2–10 wt%) prepared by incipient wetness impregnation method were systematically investigated. The physicochemical properties ofxCu/MCM-22 zeolites were analyzed by XRD, nitrogen physisorption, ICP-AES, SEM, NH3-TPD, UV-vis, H2-TPR and XPS experiments. The Cu species existing inxCu/MCM-22 are mainly isolated Cu2+, CuOxand unreducible copper species. The concentrations of both isolated Cu2+and CuOxspecies inxCu/MCM-22 increase with Cu contents, but the increment of CuOxspecies is more distinct, especially in high Cu loadings (>4 wt%). NH3-SCR experimental results demonstrated that the activity ofxCu/MCM-22 is sensitive to Cu content at low Cu loadings (≤4 wt%). When the Cu loading exceeds 4 wt%, the NH3-SCR activity ofxCu/MCM-22 is irrelevant to Cu content due to the severe pore blockage effects caused by aggregated CuOxspecies. Among the fivexCu/MCM-22 zeolites, 4Cu/MCM-22 with moderate Cu content has the best NH3-SCR performance, which displays higher than 80% NOxconversions in a wide temperature window (160–430 °C). Furthermore, the hydrothermal aging experiments (xCu/MCM-22 was treated at 750 °C for 10 h under 10% water vapor atmosphere) illustrated that all thexCu/MCM-22 zeolites exhibit high hydrothermal stability in NH3-SCR reactions.Keywords:Cu/MCM-22;NH3-SCR;Cu loading;hydrothermal aging

A ZSM-5 zeolite with a hierarchical pore structure was synthesized by the desilication-recrystallization method using tetraethyl ammonium hydroxide (TEAOH) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as the desilication and structure-directing agents, respectively. The MnOx/ZSM-5 catalyst was synthesized by the ethanol dispersion method and applied for the low-temperature selective catalytic reduction of NOxwith NH3. The results showed that NOxconversion of the hierarchical MnOx/ZSM-5 catalyst could reach 100% at about 120 °C and could be maintained in the temperature range of 120–240 °C with N2selectivity over 90%. Furthermore, the hierarchical MnOx/ZSM-5catalyst presented better SO2resistance performance than the traditional catalyst in the presence of 100 ppm SO2at 120 °C. XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, BET, NH3-TPD, and TG were applied to characterize the structural properties of the MnOx/ZSM-5 catalysts. These results showed that the MnOx/ZSM-5 catalyst had micropores (0.78 nm) and mesopores (3.2 nm) leading to a larger specific surface area, which improved the mass transfer of reactants and products while reducing the formation of sulfates. The better catalytic performance over hierarchical MnOx/ZSM-5 catalyst could be attributed to the higher concentration of Mn4+and chemisorbed oxygen species and higher surface acidity. The improved SO2resistance was related to the catalyst’s hierarchical pore structure. Keywords:hierarchical pore structure;MnOx/ZSM-5;NH3-SCR;SO2resistance

A series of ZSM-5 catalysts were synthesized using fly ash from power plants and red mud from aluminum production in different weight ratios. The ZSM-5 was subsequently coimpregnated with Co and Mn and tested for the low-temperature selective catalytic reduction of NOx by NH3 (NH3-SCR). These catalysts were characterized by XRD, N2-adsorption isotherms, SEM, XPS, and H2-TPR. Among all the prepared catalysts, 5 wt % Co 10 wt % Mn/ZSM-5 had shown the best catalytic activity, with 98.8% conversion of NOx and 90.7% selectivity toward N2 at 150 °C. This is comparable to the performance of a similar ZSM-5 catalyst prepared using chemical reagents. The high ratio of Mn4+/(Mn4+ + Mn3+ + Mn2+) in the catalyst improved the NOx conversion, whereas the moderate redox property imparted by Co3+ led to high N2 selectivity. This catalyst also showed strong resistance against poisoning in 100 ppm SO2 and 5% H2O. This work demonstrates that effective NOx removal treatment with high N2 selectivity and sufficient stability for either cement plants or incinerators can be achieved by using a porous catalyst/support material produced from industrial solid wastes.

The zeolite-based catalyst is a promising option for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of nitrogen oxides (NO x ) due to its low toxicity. However, the challenge lies in its low-temperature activity. This study developed a multi-component catalytic system consisting of Ce/Mn/Cu-loaded Beta zeolite to reduce NO x . With fixed contents of Cu and Mn, we investigated the NH 3 -SCR process and the mechanism of action of the rare-earth species (i.e., Ce) in the system. Upon optimization of the content of Ce, the Ce/Mn/Cu-loaded Beta zeolite demonstrated enhanced low-temperature activity compared to samples loaded with Cu or Cu/Mn in the temperature range of 150–250 °C. When Ce was loaded in an appropriate proportion, it regulated the oxidation state of Cu, optimizing active adsorption species for NO and strengthening the strength of Brønsted acid sites in the catalyst. These synergetic effects led to improved NH 3 -SCR catalytic performance. This study can contribute to a better understanding of multiple metal-loaded zeolites in the NH 3 -SCR process and inform future design of Beta-type catalysts.

The occurrence of NH 3 over-oxidation represents one intractable challenge for the effective application of NH 3 -SCR technology. Herein, a rational NO x activation strategy was innovatively proposed to counteract NH 3 over-oxidation during high temperature NH 3 -SCR. As a proof of concept, the hybrid catalyst of CeO 2 -ZSM-5 was explored. It was shown that the activity of CeO 2 in NH 3 -SCR was profoundly improved via physically mixing with ZSM-5, achieving more than 85 % NO at 500 °C, in sharp contrast to the negative NO conversion present for pristine CeO 2 . Comprehensive characterizations from NH 3 -TPD, NO-TPD and in situ DRIFTS verified the negligible modification of NH 3 oxidation but significant alteration of surface NO x . Due to the facile NO x activation, the reaction of NH 3 + NO x overwhelms that of NH 3 + O 2 , leading to the obtainment of excellent high temperature NH 3 -SCR performance. The novel strategy reported here is expected to provide valuable guidance for designing NH 3 -SCR catalysts with superior high temperature performance.

Chromium oxide nano-particles with an average diameter of 3 nm covered by amorphous carbon (CrOx/C) were successfully synthesized. The synthesized CrOx/C materials were used for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx by NH3 (NH3-SCR), which shows superb NH3-SCR activity and in particular, satisfactory regeneration ability in the presence of SO2 compared with Mn-based catalysts. The as-prepared catalysts were characterized by XRD, HRTEM, Raman, FTIR, BET, TPD, TPR, XPS and in situ FTIR techniques. The results indicated presence of certain amounts of unstable lattice oxygen exposed on the surface of CrOx nano-particles with an average size of 3 nm in the CrOx/C samples, which led to NO being conveniently oxidized to NO2. The formed NO2 participated in NH3-SCR activity, reacting with catalysts via a “fast NH3-SCR” pathway, which enhanced th NH3-SCR performance of the CrOx/C catalysts. Furthermore, the stable lattice of the CrOx species made the catalyst immune to the sulfation process, which was inferred to be the cause of its superior regeneration ability in the presence of SO2. This study provides a simple way to synthesize stable CrOx nano-particles with active oxygen, and sheds light on designing NH3-SCR catalysts with highly efficient low temperature activity, SO2 tolerance, and regeneration ability.

Mn-Co-based catalysts were loaded to ceramic filters element by impregnation for the coprocessing of dust and nitrogen oxide (NOx) in flue gas. The influence of the Mn/Co ratio and loading on the catalytic performance was investigated. The Mn-Co-based catalytic ceramic filter with a Mn/Co molar ratio of 2/1 can achieve 99% NO conversion by selective catalytic reduction of NOxwith NH3(NH3-SCR) in the temperature range of 100−180 °C, but its resistance to H2O was relatively poor. The filter element was modified by PTFE to improve the H2O resistance. After modification, the catalytic ceramic filter showed superior resistance to H2O and SO2at low temperatures (100–180 °C) and satisfactory self-cleaning performance.Keywords:NH3-SCR;catalytic ceramic filter;PTFE-modified;H2O resistance

Fe-BEA catalysts are active for the NH3-SCR of NO. For industrial application, a binder should be added to the Fe-BEA catalysts to make them tightly adhere to the monoliths. The addition of alumina and zirconia as binders to the Fe-BEA led to a different effect on NO conversion. The catalytic activity of the mixed samples was evaluated by the temperature programmed procedure in a flow-reactor system, and the mechanism was analyzed via SEM, BET, XRD and XPS. It was found that larger iron particles were formed by the migration of parent iron particles in the Fe-BEA catalyst with alumina. This led to the increase of Fe 3+ magnitude and iron cluster, enhancing the abilities of NO oxidation and storage. Accordingly, the SCR activity increased slightly in low temperature but decreased sharply in high temperature. For the Fe-BEA with zirconia sample, NO oxidation and storage abilities decreased due to the less iron clusters. The increase of Fe 3+ magnitude resulted in higher catalytic oxidation ability, which gave rise to little change in the SCR activity compared with the Fe-BEA.

SO2poisoning is a great challenge for the practical application of Mn-based catalysts in low-temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) reactions of NOxwith NH3. A series of Gadolinium (Gd)-modified MnOx/ZSM-5 catalysts were synthesized via a citric acid–ethanol dispersion method and evaluated by low-temperature NH3-SCR. Among them, the GdMn/Z-0.3 catalyst with the molar ratio of Gd/Mn of 0.3 presented the highest catalytic activity, in which a 100% NO conversion could be obtained in the temperature range of 120–240 °C. Furthermore, GdMn/Z-0.3 exhibited good SO2resistance compared with Mn/Z in the presence of 100 ppm SO2. The results of Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), temperature-programmed reduction of H2(H2-TPR) and temperature-programmed desorption of NH3(NH3-TPD) illustrated that such catalytic performance was mainly caused by large surface area, abundant Mn4+and surface chemisorbed oxygen species, strong reducibility and the suitable acidity of the catalyst. The in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra (DRIFTS) results revealed that the addition of Gd greatly inhibited the reaction between the SO2and MnOxactive sites to form bulk manganese sulfate, thus contributing to high SO2resistance. Moreover, in situ DRIFTS experiments also shed light on the mechanism of low-temperature SCR reactions over Mn/Z and GdMn/Z-0.3, which both followed the Langmuir–Hinshelwood (L–H) and Eley–Rideal (E–R) mechanism.Keywords:SO2poisoning;low temperature;NH3-SCR;in situ DRIFTS

Heavy metals (such as Zn and Pb) have a deactivation effect on the catalyst for selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH 3 . In this study, it was found that the modification of Mn/TiO 2 catalyst by Nb could greatly enhance its Zn resistance. From the characterization results of BET, XRD, H 2 -TPR, NH 3 -TPD, it may be concluded that the introduction of Nb into Mn/TiO 2 catalyst would lead to its lower crystallinity , more acid sites and higher concentrations of Mn 4 + and surface chemisorbed oxygen. The results of in situ DRIFT study reveal that the NH 3 -SCR reactions over Mn/TiO 2 and Mn-Nb/TiO 2 all obey both the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism and the Eley–Rideal mechanism, and the doping of Nb on Mn/TiO 2 catalyst could promote the adsorption of NH 3 and NOx species on it. All these features make a contribution to the high SCR activity and good Zn resistance of Mn-Nb/TiO 2 catalyst.

Synthesizing CHA-type zeolite via template-free interzeolite transformation has been considered as a green method, but the resultant zeolite exhibits low activity in the selective catalytic reduction of NOx by ammonia (NH3-SCR). Herein we report a highly active NH3-SCR catalyst (Cu-CHAUSY) derived from CHA-type zeolite (CHAUSY) that is synthesized via template-free interzeolite transformation from ultra-stable Y (USY). The ultra-high activity is attributed to the specific silicon and aluminum configurations in USY which are distinctly different from those in the conventionally used parent NaY, although they have similar SiO2/Al2O3 ratios. This characteristic endows CHAUSY with more single Al atoms in a six-membered ring, benefiting the self-reduction of [Cu(OH)]+ and the activation of O2 during the NH3-SCR reaction. Moreover, Cu-CHAUSY is demonstrated to outperform the two reference catalysts prepared from the aluminosilicate gel by conventional hydrothermal crystallization with the assistance of organic templates. Our work provides a new strategy for preparing highly active NH3-SCR catalysts.
