All-inorganic perovskite quantum dots (QDs) (CsPbX 3 , X = Cl, Br, I) have shown great promise in optoelectronic applications but are severely hindered by their poor environmental stability and photoluminescence (PL) quenching. In this work, we report a novel approach for enhancing both stability and optical performance by insitu growth of CsPbBr 3 QDs within a borosilicate glass matrix, assisted by SrF 2 and Sm 2 O 3 codoping. The introduction of F − ions from SrF 2 modifies the glass network structure, promoting uniform nucleation and growth of QDs. Simultaneously, Sm 3+ doping, through partial incorporation into the CsPbBr 3 QD lattice, passivates surface defects and induces lattice contraction, which enhances quantum confinement effects. At the optimal Sm 3+ concentration of 1 mol%, the PL intensity increases by 332.8%, the photoluminescence quantum yield rises from 22.01% to 37.5%, and the fluorescence lifetime extends from 95.05 to 127.69 ns. The glass encapsulation provides long-term air and water stability, outperforming conventional ligand-capped QDs. Moreover, the developed materials were successfully applied in high-brightness green and white light-emitting diodes, achieving wide color gamut coverage (up to 129.4% NTSC), and demonstrated strong potential in forensic fingerprint visualization. These results provide a new pathway for developing stable, multifunctional perovskite-based optoelectronic materials. Graphical This study demonstrates a dual strategy of F − /Sm³ + codoping and glass encapsulation to significantly enhance the luminescence performance and stability of CsPbBr 3 quantum dots. Optimal Sm³ + doping (1 mol%) yields a 332.8% increase in photoluminescence intensity, improves quantum efficiency from 22% to 37.5%, and extends fluorescence lifetime to 127.69 ns. The glass matrix provides exceptional environmental stability, retaining 78.65% initial luminescence after 50 days in air. Resulting light-emitting diode devices achieve a wide color gamut covering 129.4% of the NTSC standard.

Trivalent rare earth ions samarium and europium ions were doped into the prepared Gd 2 MgTiO 6 host crystal structure by high temperature solid phase method. XRD patterns show that the synthesized materials belong to the monoclinic structure with space group P 21 / n . Using UV-visible spectroscopy, the band gaps can be calculated to be 4.18, 4.15 and 3.84 eV for host, Sm 3+ and Eu 3+ -doped samples, respectively. For Sm-doped sample excited with 407 nm, the PL spectrum shows three prominent peaks at 565 nm, 603 nm and 649 nm, which are attributed to the transitions of 4 G → 5 / 2 6 H 5/2 , 4 G → 5 / 2 6 H 7/2 and 4 G → 5 / 2 6 H 9/2 , respectively. The 591 nm and 615 nm emissions of Eu 3+ doping correspond to the transitions from 5 D 0 to 7 F 1 and 7 F 2 , respectively. The optimal concentrations are 0.03 mol and 0.09 mol for Sm 3+ and Eu 3+ doping, respectively. The prepared samples can be used in the field of LEDs thanks to lower color temperature CCT=1700∼2200 K and higher color purity >97%.

A series of new phosphors, Sm 3+ -doped InGaZnO 4 (IGZO:Sm 3+ ), was synthesized using a high-temperature solid-state reaction method. The structures of IGZO:Sm 3+ samples belong to the R \(\overline{3 }\) m space group (No. 166). The excitation spectrum of IGZO:Sm 3+ showed an optimal excitation wavelength at 468 nm. Four distinct peaks were observed in the emission spectrum, with the most prominent peak appearing at 612 nm, corresponding to the 4 G 5/2 – 6 H 7/2 radiative transition of Sm 3+ ions. For effective optical performance, different doping levels were tested, and it was found that the composition IGZO:2 mol% Sm 3+ is the optimal one. The concentration quenching effect is caused by nearest neighbor ion interactions. In the temperature range of 300 to 480 K, the IGZO:Sm 3+ phosphor showed excellent thermal stability which is verified through luminous intensity behavior and the changes in Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates. The activation energy ( E a ) for IGZO:Sm 3+ was calculated to be 0.40 eV. Through powder dusting method, latent fingerprint (LFP) information can be deciphered at Level I–III feature. The optical properties, thermal stability and potential application in latent fingerprint development of IGZO:Sm 3 ⁺ were systematically investigated, which provides a new choice of materials and research ideas in related fields.

The advancement of double perovskite oxide phosphors has expanded their applications, encompassing white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to optical thermometry and scintillation detection. We have synthesized novel Ca 2 LuTaO 6 phosphors characterized by double perovskite structures by employing the high-temperature solid-state reaction technique. Upon excitation with 312 nm UV light, these undoped phosphors emit a broad blue light centered at 424 nm. We thoroughly investigated the origin of this blue emission using computational and experimental methods. The Ca 2 LuTaO 6 phosphors were further doped with Dy 3+ or Dy 3+ and Sm 3+ ions, which results in a broadband tunable-color emission covering the entire visible region (400–700 nm). Under 354 nm excitation, the single doped Ca 2 LuTaO 6 :Dy 3+ exhibits two emission bands due to the 4 F 9/2 → 6 H 15/2 (blue) and 4 F 9/2 → 6 H 13/2 (yellow) transitions of Dy 3+ . The single doped Ca 2 LuTaO 6 :Sm 3+ generates a red emission (603 nm) when excited at 407 nm from 4 G 5/2 to 6 H 7/2 transition. The optimized Ca 2 LuTaO 6 :0.05Dy 3+ and Ca 2 LuTaO 6 : 0.05Dy 3+ /0.04Sm 3+ phosphors show excellent thermal stability. Even at a temperature of 150 °C, i.e. typical temperature of the working LED electronics, the luminescence intensity for the single-doped sample with Dy 3+ maintains 82 % of its initial value. On the other hand, at the same temperature conditions, for the phosphors co-doped with Dy 3+ and Sm 3+ , the intensity remains at 90 % of Dy 3+ peaks with a slight chromaticity shift. A study of the electroluminescent performance of the Ca 2 LuTaO 6 :0.05Sm 3+ and Ca 2 LuTaO 6 :0.05Dy 3+ /0.04Sm 3+ phosphors were conducted using 365 nm LED chips to investigate their applications in white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). The results confirm that Ca 2 LuTaO 6 :Dy 3+ /Sm 3+ phosphors have great potential for general illumination purposes, as the single-phase light sources.

A series of SrMoO 4 :Sm 3+ ,Tb 3+ ,Na + phosphors was synthesized using a high-temperature solid-state reaction method in air. On excitation at 290 nm, SrMoO 4 :Sm 3+ ,Tb 3+ phosphor emitted light that varied systematically from green to reddish-orange on changing the Sm 3+ and Tb 3+ ion concentrations. The emission intensities of SrMoO 4 :Sm 3+ and SrMoO 4 :Sm 3+ ,Tb 3+ phosphors were increased two to four times due to charge compensation when Na + was added as a charge compensator. The luminescence mechanism and energy transfer could be explained using energy-level diagrams of the MoO 4 2– group, Sm 3+ and Tb 3+ ions. SrMoO 4 :Sm 3+ ,Tb 3+ ,Na + could be used as reddish-orange phosphor in white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on an ~ 405 nm near-UV LED chip. This research is helpful in adjusting and improving the luminescence properties of other phosphors. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The uniform 1D nano-rods of RE 3+ doped Ln 7 O 6 F 9 ( Ln = Y and Lu; RE = Pr, Sm and Eu) were synthesized through a facile two-step hydrothermal method without extra fluorine source followed by post-heat treatment. The phase formation, morphologies, as well as photoluminescence properties of the materials were investigated. The precursor composition was determined to be Ln (OH) 1.69 F 1.31 using the Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FT-IR), thermal gravimetric and differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC). The average lengths of Y 7 O 6 F 9 and Lu 7 O 6 F 9 were about 6.8 and 7.9 μm, respectively, with the average width of about 650 nm. It was interesting that the tip of the nano-rods exhibits a straight line and divergent umbrella shaped bifurcation for Y 7 O 6 F 9 and Lu 7 O 6 F 9 , respectively. Upon ultraviolet excitation, Pr 3+ , Sm 3+ and Eu 3+ ions in Ln 7 O 6 F 9 showed blue, orange and red emissions originating from their characteristic f-f transitions. In addition, the 4 f 1 5 d 1 → 4 f 2 band emissions (340–450 nm) as well as typical 4 f 2 → 4 f 2 line emissions (450–700 nm) of Pr 3+ were observed in Pr 3+ -doped Ln 7 O 6 F 9 . For Sm 3+ -doped Ln 7 O 6 F 9 , only the typical f - f transitions of Sm 3+ were observed with the absence of charge transfer (CT) band. However, the broad excitation bands at 255 nm attributing to the charge transfer transition of Eu 3+ (i.e. O 2− → Eu 3+ CT) were observed in Eu 3+ -doped Ln 7 O 6 F 9 .

Inorganic photochromic materials, exhibiting great potential for optical switcher and erasable optical recording, have attracted more and more attention due to their robust fatigue resistance and excellent stability. However, the optical switching contrast of downshifting emission-based photochromic materials is still inferior. To address this issue, in this work we report a Sm 3+ -doped perovskite oxide (BaZrO 3 ) photochromic material with good fatigue resistance. With the combination of red emission and photochromism properties, optical switching with the highest contrast value of 90.05% for the downshifting emission-based photochromic material till now is achieved. The good reproducibility is demonstrated. The mechanisms of photoluminescence , photochromism and optical switching are discussed in detail. Finally, as a proof-of-concept, the implementation of erasable optical recording is also realized through the fabrication of photochromic discs and flexible films using the as-obtained BaZrO 3 : Sm 3+ .

The exploration of stable/efficient phosphor for n -UV chip pumped white light-emitting diodes ( w LEDs) remains an arduous task. Herein, a novel series of color tunable Eu 2+ /Tb 3+ /Sm 3+ tridoped Sc-based cyclosilicate phosphors (KBaScSi 3 O 9 : Eu 2+ /Tb 3+ /Sm 3+ ) have successfully designed and obtained via facile solid-state reaction based on comprehensive consideration of rigidly structural network of host, weak electron-phonon coupling strength and spectral adjustability of codopants via energy transfer (ET). The crystallographic occupancies of Eu, Tb and Sm primary in Ba/K, Ba and Ba sites in the monoclinic host, respectively were determined on the basis of the Rietveld refinements and crystal chemistry rules. The photoluminescence (PL) properties were systematically investigated in conjunction with structural analyses, implying that the ‘warm’ white light with excellent thermal stability is stemmed from combination of optimized blue (Eu 2+ ), green (Tb 3+ ) and red (Sm 3+ ) emissions via Eu → Tb → Sm ET strategy. Interestingly, Tb ions play both roles of green light luminescent center and ET bridge to achieve cascade ET for connecting Eu/Sm ion pairs because of the adverse metal-metal charge transfer (MMCT) effect (Eu 2+ + Sm 3+ → Eu 3+ + Sm 2+ ). Furthermore, the phosphor-converted w LEDs (pc- w LEDs), by encapsulating the optimal KBS: 4 %Eu/4 %Tb/6 %Sm with commercial n -UV LED chip, show high thermal stability with satisfactory electroluminescence (EL) performances. These results indicate the KBS: Eu/Tb/Sm phosphors are potential candidates for application in high power n -UV pumped pc- w LEDs.

A series of CaNb 2 O 6 : x Sm 3+ (0 ≤

≤ 10 mol%) and CaNb 2 O 6 : Sm 3+ , Na + /B 3+ phosphors were synthesized by the solid-state reaction method in air. Their crystal structures and luminescence properties were investigated and analysed, respectively. Host CaNb 2 O 6 emitted blue light with excitation 270 nm. CaNb 2 O 6 : x Sm 3+ phosphors showed a systematically varied hue from blue to white by changing Sm 3+ ion concentration from 0 to 10 mol% with excitation of 270 nm and their chromaticity coordinates were the regions from (0.1665, 0.1767) to (0.2484, 0.2260). Luminescence properties of CaNb 2 O 6 : Sm 3+ phosphor were tuned and improved significantly by codoping B 3+ or Na + ions. Energy transfer between Nb \(_{\mathbf {2}}\textit {O}_{\mathbf {6}}^{\boldsymbol {2-}}\) group and Sm 3+ ion was observed and analysed via luminescence properties. The luminous mechanism was explained by energy level scheme and energy transfer process in CaNb 2 O 6 : Sm 3+ phosphor. The strong excitation band peaking at ∼ 407 nm indicated that the CaNb 2 O 6 : Sm 3+ , Na + /B 3+ phosphor has a potential application in white light-emitting diodes based on near-UV LED chip.

A series of Sm 3+ -doped CaGdAlO 4 (CGA) phosphors were successfully synthesized via a high-temperature solid-state method. The crystal structure and luminescent properties of the samples were characterized by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and fluorescence spectrometry, with Rietveld refinement confirming a tetragonal crystal structure (consistent with observed XRD patterns). The CGA:0.02Sm 3+ phosphor can be efficiently excited by blue-violet light (408 nm), emitting intense orange-red luminescence. The optimal Sm 3+ doping concentration is 2 mol % (maximum luminous intensity), and the concentration quenching mechanism is attributed to dipole-dipole interactions. The optimal sample exhibits excellent thermal stability in the range of 298–523 K, with an activation energy of 0.11 eV. When used as a red component in white LED (w-LED) devices, CGA:0.02Sm 3+ delivers outstanding performance: a high color rendering index (Ra = 91.2) and CIE chromaticity coordinates of (0.3148, 0.3488), indicating its potential as an orange-red phosphor for lighting and display applications. Additionally, first-principles calculations based on density-functional theory (DFT) were performed to investigate the electronic structures and density of states of pure CGA and Sm 3+ -doped CGA.

Lead-free double perovskites (LFDPs) have attracted substantial research interest owing to their unique photoluminescence characteristics, low toxicity, and structural versatility. However, achieving efficient single-lattice white-light emission remains a formidable challenge due to the intrinsic difficulty of spectral tuning and the trade-off between luminescence efficiency and color quality in single-host systems. To address this issue, we developed a triple-doped rare-earth double perovskite system Cs 2 NaScCl 6 : Sb 3+ , Tb 3+ , Sm 3+ . Through a competitive energy transfer design, we achieved fine control over energy migration from Sb 3+ to Tb 3+ and Sm 3+ , enabling precise spectral modulation simply by adjusting the dopant concentrations. Steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy clearly identified three energy transfer routes: Sb 3+ → Tb 3+ , Sb 3+ → Sm 3+ , and Tb 3+ → Sm 3+ , which collectively contribute to the tunable white-light emission. The optimized material exhibits outstanding thermal stability, retaining 88.1% of its initial emission intensity at 473 K. The Cs 2 NaScCl 6 : 1%Sb 3+ , 40%Tb 3+ , 8%Sm 3+ single crystal achieves a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 40.90%. When fabricated into WLED devices, this phosphor delivers a color rendering index (CRI) of 85.1, a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 4278 K, and near-ideal CIE coordinates of (0.336, 0.306). Collectively, this work not only presents a high-performance single-host white-light emitter for solid-state lighting applications, but also offers a viable energy transfer design strategy for rare-earth-activated LFDPs, thereby advancing the development of eco-friendly perovskite materials for white-light-emitting devices.

To develop novel luminescent materials for optical thermometry, a series of La 2 MgSnO 6 :Mn 4+ , M (M=Bi 3+ , Sm 3+ ) phosphors were prepared by the solid-state method. Upon UV excitation, the La 2 MgSnO 6 : Mn 4+ sample demonstrates strong red emission originating from the 2 E g → 4 A 2g transition of Mn 4+ . By co-doping with Bi 3+ or Sm 3+ , it becomes possible to achieve tunable emission in La 2 MgSnO 6 phosphors. Due to the different thermal quenching behavior between the Mn 4+ and Bi 3+ or Sm 3+ , a high-sensitivity thermometric was developed using the fluorescence intensity ratio mode. The maximum sensitivity was obtained to 1.5%K -1 at 473K. The emission spectra of La 2 MgSnO 6 : Mn 4+ , M (M=Bi 3+ , Sm 3+ ) phosphor significantly coincide with the absorption spectra of plant pigments in the blue and red regions. These findings indicate that the as-prepared La 2 MgSnO 6 : Mn 4+ , M (M=Bi 3+ , Sm 3+ ) phosphors are promising candidate materials for plant cultivation and high-temperature optical thermometry.
